Abstract:By using curvature estimates, we prove that a complete non-compact hypersurface M with constant mean curvature and finiteL n -norm curvature in R n+1 must be minimal, so that M is a hyperplane if it is strongly stable. This is a generalization of the result on stable complete minimal hypersurfaces of R n+1. Moreover, complete strongly stable hypersurfaces with constant mean curvature and finite L 1-norm curvature in R n+1 are considered.

Abstract:By using the interior curvature estimate and Gromov's compactness theorem, we prove that a stable complete minimal hypersurface in R n +1 with finite total scalar curvature must be a hyperplane. This extends the result obtained by P. Bérard in Remarques sur l'équation de J. Simons, Pitman Monographs Surveys Pure Appl. Math. , vol. 52, 1991, pp. 47-57.

Abstract:Let M be an n-dimensional oriented compact submanifold with parallel mean curvature in the unit sphere $S^{n+p}$. Denote by H and S the mean curvature and the squared length of the second fundamental form of M, respectively. We obtain a classification theorem of M if it satisfies $S+\lambda _2\le \alpha (n,H)$, where $\lambda _{2}$ is the second largest eigenvalue of the fundamental matrix and $\alpha (n,H)$ is defined as in Theorem B.

Abstract:Let M be an n-dimensional closed hypersurface with constant mean curvature and constant scalar curvature in a unit sphere. Denote by H and S the mean curvature and the squared length of the second fundamental form. We prove that if a(n, H) <= S <= alpha( n, H)+ CnH2, where n >= 4 and H not equal 0, then S = alpha( n, H) and M is a Clifford torus Sn-1(r(1)) x S-1(r(2)). Here alpha(n, H) = n + n(3)/2(n -1) H-2 - n(n - 2)/2(n - 1) root n(2)H(4) + 4(n - 1) H-2, and C-n is a positive constant explicitly depending on n. The emphasis is that our gap theorem imposes no restriction on the range of mean curvature. Moreover, we obtain gap theorems for complete hypersurfaces with constant mean curvature and constant scalar curvature in space forms.

Abstract:Given a positive function F on S n which satisfies a convexity condition, we define the r-th anisotropic mean curvature function H F for hypersurfaces in R n+1 which is a generalization of the usual r-th mean curvature function. Let X : M ! R n+1 be an n-dimensional closed hypersurface with H F r+1 =constant, for some r with 0 � rn 1, which is a critical point for a variational problem. We show that X(M) is stable if and only if X(M) is the Wulff shape.

Abstract:We study the weak stability index of an immersion ϕ: M → Sn+1 (1) ⊂ Rn+2 of an n-dimensional compact Riemannian manifold. We prove that the weak stability index of a compact hypersurface M with constant scalar curvature in Sn+1 (1), which is not totally umbilical, is greater than or equal to n + 2 if the mean curvature H1 and H3 are constant, and that the equality holds if and only if M is $\smash{S^m(c)\times S^{n-m}(\sqrt{1-c^2})}$. As an application, we show that the weak stability index of an n-dimensional compact hypersurface with constant scalar curvature in Sn+1 (1), which is neither totally umbilical nor a Clifford hypersurface, is greater than or equal to 2n + 4 if the mean curvature H1 and H3 are constant.

Abstract:We study constant mean curvature 1/2 surfaces in H2xR that admit a compactification of the mean curvature operator. We show that a particular family of complete entire graphs over H2 admits a structure of infinite dimensional manifold with local control on the behaviors at infinity. These graphs also appear to have a half-space property and we deduce a uniqueness result at infinity. Deforming non degenerate constant mean curvature 1/2 annuli, we provide a large class of (non rotational) examples and construct (possibly embedded) annuli without axis, i.e. with two vertical, asymptotically rotational, non aligned ends.

If |ϕ| 2 − ( n − 2)√ n ( n − 1)| H ||ϕ| + n (2 n − 1)( H 2 + c ) ≥ 0, then M does not admit nonconstant bounded harmonic functions with finite Dirichlet integral. In particular, if N has bounded geometry and c + H 2 > 0, then M must have only one end.

Abstract:Static equilibrium configurations of continua supported by surface tension are given by constant mean curvature (CMC) surfaces which are critical points of a variational problem to extremize the area while keeping the volume fixed. CMC surfaces are used as mathematical models of a variety of continua, such as tiny liquid drops, stars, and nuclei, to play important roles in both mathematics and physics. Therefore, the geometry of CMC surfaces and their properties such as stability are of special importance in differential geometry and in a variety of physical sciences. In this paper we examine the stability of CMC hypersurfaces in arbitrary dimensions, possibly having boundaries on two parallel hyperplanes, by investigating the second variation of the area. We determine the stability of non-uniform liquid bridges or unduloids for the first time in all dimensions and all parameter (the ratio of the neck radius to bulge radius) regimes. The analysis is assisted by numerical computations.

Abstract:Surfaces with constant mean curvature (CMC) are critical points of the area with volume constraint. They serve as a mathematical model of surfaces of soap bubbles and tiny liquid drops. CMC surfaces are said to be stable if the second variation of the area is nonnegative for all volume-preserving variations satisfying the given boundary condition. In this paper, we examine the stability of CMC hypersurfaces in general Euclidean space possibly having boundaries on two parallel hyperplanes. We reveal the stability of equilibrium hypersurfaces without self-intersection for the first time in all dimensions. The analysis is assisted by numerical computations.

Abstract:In this paper, we study hypersurfaces of H-2 x H-2. We first classify the hypersurfaces with constant principal curvatures and constant product angle functions. Then we classify homogeneous hypersurfaces and isoparametric hypersurfaces, respectively. Finally, we classify the hypersurfaces with at most two distinct constant principal curvatures, as well as those with three distinct constant principal curvatures under some additional conditions.

Abstract:The totally umbilical and non-totally geodesic hypersurfaces in the (n + 1)-dimensional spheres are characterized as the only hypersurfaces with weak stability index 0. In our 2010 paper we proved that the weak stability index of a compact hypersurface M with constant scalar curvature n(n − 1)r, r> 1, in an (n + 1)-dimensional sphere Sn + 1(1), which is not a totally umbilical hypersurface, is greater than or equal to n + 2 if the mean curvature H and H3 are constant. In this paper, we prove the same results, without the assumption that H3 is constant. In fact, we show that the weak stability index of a compact hypersurface M with constant scalar curvature n(n − 1)r, r> 1, in Sn + 1(1), which is not a totally umbilical hypersurface, is greater than or equal to n + 2 if the mean curvature H is constant.

Abstract:Let $x:{\bf M}^m\rightarrow {\bf S}^{m+1}$ be a hypersurface in the (m+1)-dimensional unit sphere S m+1 without umbilics. Four basic invariants of x under the Möbius transformation group in S m+1 are a Riemannian metric g called Möbius metric, a 1-form Φ called Möbius form, a symmetric (0,2) tensor A called Blaschke tensor and symmetric (0,2) tensor B called Möbius second fundamental form. In this paper, we prove the following classification theorem: let $x:{\bf M}^m\rightarrow {\bf S}^{m+1}$ be a hypersurface, which satisfies (i) Φ≡0, (ii) A+λg+μB≡0 for some functions λ and μ, then λ and μ must be constant, and x is Möbius equivalent to either (i) a hypersurface with constant mean curvature and scalar curvature in S m+1 ; or (ii) the pre-image of a stereographic projection of a hypersurface with constant mean curvature and scalar curvature in the Euclidean space R m+1 ; or (iii) the image of the standard conformal map of a hypersurface with constant mean curvature and scalar curvature in the (m+1)-dimensional hyperbolic space H m+1 . This result shows that one can use Möbius differential geometry to unify the three different classes of hypersurface with constant mean curvature and scalar curvature in S m+1 , R m+1 and H m+1 .
