Abstract:We report on a male platypus ( Ornithorhynchus anatinus ) who was tagged in November 2000 at the age of 1 year and recaptured in September 2023, when nearly 24 years old, in a small creek system in Melbourne's southeastern suburbs. By comparison, a female platypus recently reached the age of 30 years in captivity, though with signs of ageing that may have precluded her survival if she were living in the wild. Ten other captive individuals have lived to an age of more than 20 years in recent decades.

Abstract:The present study describes the post-hatching development of the external features of the platypus. Specimens range in age from the day of hatching through to 6 months old, and provide the first comprehensive view of the developmental sequence of these features. Various features, those specific to the platypus, those specific to monotremes and those shared with marsupials and eutherians, are described. Features specific to the platypus, including the bill and webbing of the forefeet, are seen to develop precociously. Many features show similarities to marsupials, although marsupials show differential development both in timing and in morphology. The developmental progression is related to the age, in days, although the exact age of the specimens is unclear, and relies on ages given to the specimens at the time of collection, sometimes as long as 70 years ago. Despite this, the progression of development of these features suggests that the ageing given is relatively accurate.

Abstract:The platypus is a challenging species to survey and monitor. We investigated the use of time-lapse cameras to detect platypus activity in a Tasmanian creek by deploying three camera models diurnally at a single site over 6 months, and deploying one model both nocturnally and diurnally at two sites over 12 months. Variation in camera attributes and settings (camera view angle, length of time-lapse intervals) contributed to a 10-fold difference in the mean number of platypus images recorded in a given behavioural sequence (or 'event') and an approximately 50% difference in median event duration among the three models. Results also varied between sites and at diel and bimonthly time scales due to pool topography, day length (affecting site illumination) and likely temporal differences in platypus activity and population size. However, even the least-effective camera model reliably captured ≥1 platypus image within the first 24 h of deployment at the two study sites throughout the year. Time-lapse cameras are a suitable tool to assess platypus occurrence and measure activity, as long as appropriate equipment is selected for the intended purpose and sources of spatial and temporal variation are carefully considered when designing studies and interpreting results.

Abstract:The platypus ( Ornithorhynchus anatinus ) is a semi-aquatic monotreme that occupies a high trophic position in the freshwater ecosystems of eastern mainland Australia and Tasmania. Platypuses are continuously exposed to anthropogenic contaminants including perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS). This study examined PFOS concentrations in the livers of deceased platypuses (eight wild; one captive) that were opportunistically collected across NSW over a two- and a half-year period. There was a large variation in PFOS concentrations, ranging from < 1 μg/kg to 1200 μg/kg. This study presents the first report of PFOS contamination in platypuses, revealing their PFOS levels are broadly similar to those found in river otters ( Lutra canadensis ) and lower than those in American mink ( Mustela vison), both which occupy similar ecological niches in freshwater systems. This study raises concerns about the impact of PFOS on platypus health.

Abstract:Fyke nets are the preferred type of equipment used for platypus ( Ornithorhynchus anatinus ) live-trapping surveys in shallow watercourses. However, numerous factors other than abundance may affect the frequency of platypus captures, including when, where and how nets are set, stream discharge and entry into nets by rakali ( Hydromys chrysogaster ), which create exit holes that are then also available to a platypus. A threefold difference in the mean monthly frequency of platypus captures in fyke nets is also evident across the year. To limit net evasion, it makes sense to reduce net visibility and minimise opportunities for animals to squeeze under, climb over or walk around nets. Time-lapse cameras can also be deployed at fyke-netting sites to estimate how many individuals evade capture. To protect platypus welfare and the welfare of non-target species held in fyke nets, it is important to ensure that captured animals have access to air, to check nets frequently throughout the time they are set and to release bycatch when first encountered. Fyke-netting studies typically generate sparse platypus population data, so care is needed when selecting and interpreting platypus abundance metrics generated through mark–recapture modelling or use of indices.

Abstract:The platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus) is an amphibious, egg-laying mammal of high conservation value that is found only in Australia. The zoonotic bacterium Leptospira interrogans serovar Hardjo was discovered in platypuses in prior studies, but little is known about its epidemiology. Samples in the Platypus Serum Bank were tested in 2023 and the results were combined with historical records. Antibodies against L. interrogans serovar Hardjo were found in 50% of 464 serum samples from 411 platypuses collected from 14 river basins in southeastern Australia between 1981 and 2012; prevalence remained high over three decades in the Shoalhaven River population. Seroprevalence increased with age, suggesting environmental exposure. Individual platypuses had persistent titres, some for six years. Seropositive females lactated, juveniles were recruited into the population, and there were no reports of clinical leptospirosis. Three necropsied platypuses were seropositive and had mild nephritis with leptospires in the renal tubules. The high seroprevalence, persistent titres, lack of disease, mild renal lesions, and renal colonisation suggest the platypus may be a maintenance host. Sympatric cattle had L. interrogans serovar Hardjo titres, but the spatial association with seropositive platypuses was statistically weak. Other mammalian wildlife species and sheep also have L. interrogans serovar Hardjo titres; therefore, a complex ecological network must be considered. A landscape-wide study is recommended to properly assess transmission pathways and confirm who is infecting whom.

Abstract:Summary Platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus) are an endemic Australian freshwater mammal, impacted by synergistic threats across their range. During the extreme drought of 2017–2019, declining water levels threatened Platypus at Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve (TNR), Australian Capital Territory (ACT), Australia. TNR supports a population of Platypus, occupying interconnected ponds within a predator proof fence. During drought conditions in 2019, Platypuses could not move out of the fenced area to refugia as floodgates were closed due to low water levels. In winter of 2019, eight Platypuses were found deceased resulting from starvation. By December, water levels were extremely low and ponds were continuing to dry. Given these circumstances, a rescue intervention was undertaken to capture stranded Platypuses. They were temporarily relocated and housed at Taronga Zoo, Sydney, until they were returned when conditions at TNR improved. Seven Platypuses were rescued, with five successfully housed at Taronga for 5 months. One Platypus was lost after escaping from its enclosure and another Platypus died when trapped in a crevice. The Platypuses were returned after water levels increased at TNR and were monitored for 500 days post‐release, demonstrating successful repatriation. This case study outlines the key stages and considerations required for this intervention, providing critical information for rescue attempts on drought‐affected Platypus populations. There is a need to continue developing a decision framework for interventions of climate‐affected populations, including quantifying trigger thresholds and conservation prioritisation of populations. This will become increasingly necessary given the trajectories of habitat degradation, coupled with the increasingly frequent and severe droughts, expected under anticipated climate change scenarios.

The Lichenologist

Abstract:In most universities and secondary education, biology teaching does not include much about 'cryptogams', a term that has for some been superseded by 'lower plants'. This unique book is a major project involving many more people than the editors and is innovative in bringing a modern approach to these organisms. The 'new cryptogams' are the oxy-photoautotrophic groups as the title suggests. Their diversity is astounding, with almost 300 000 species in the world, contributing 50–80% of the oxygen released by the biosphere. Their importance to the planet is often not sufficiently promoted. The chapter headings provide a new way to view these organisms. After the Introduction, there are chapters dealing with Endosymbioses, Cyanobacteria (justifiably included), Algae from Primary Endosymbioses, Algae from Secondary Symbioses, Symbioses and finally Bryophytes. Symbiosis as a cardinal theme is quite a novel approach. It makes so much more sense when we consider the DNA sequencing evidence upon which the Tree of Life is based. The primary endosymbiotic algae include the red and green algae. The accumulated photosynthetic product is starch. The secondary endosymbiotic algae include the brown algae, Euglena and dinoflagellates whose chloroplasts are surrounded by an extra membrane. Their accumulated photosynthate is a β1–3 glucan rather than starch. Of course, there is much more about these groups of algae but not all may seem relevant to lichenologists. Lichens come as a section all on their own in the chapter on Symbioses, which also includes algae and cyanobacteria symbiotic in other organisms, from protists to higher plants. The range and number of organisms which have symbiotic algae is amazing. The section on lichens (excluding references) occupies about 40 pages of the over 600 pages in the book. Whilst this may seem rather limited to some lichenologists, it is very useful to have information, albeit brief, which is up to date and not easily available in such ready form elsewhere. The more recent classifications of fungi and hence lichens have been rather confusing to traditional lichenologists but it is most interesting to see more clearly how lichens have evolved. The unique features of lichens are described lucidly with excellent images and diagrams. Their origin now appears to be mostly 100 My to 300 My ago depending on the Class. The pervasive convergent evolution (homoplasy) in lichens had misled earlier lichenologists and this is one of their interesting features. The morphology, structure and physiology are similar to other books but updated. The ecology deals with lichens characteristic of the major substrata, with a section on the lichens of old forests. The physiology has an ecological focus, which I like. The elements I notice missing are the growth and development of lichen thalli and of course the secondary metabolites or lichen substances but the author is limited by space and cannot include everything everyone wants. Universities should have this in their libraries, as of course should anyone teaching the 'new cryptogams' or lower plants. Biology departments should embrace the importance of these fascinating and amazing organisms, and make sure their students are aware of their importance to the functioning of the biosphere of planet Earth.

Abstract:Platypuses are the world's most evolutionarily distinct mammal and have several host-specific ecto- and endoparasites. With platypus populations declining, consideration should also be given to preserving these high conservation priority parasites alongside their charismatic host. A disease risk analysis (DRA) was performed for a platypus conservation translocation, using a modified streamlined methodology that incorporated a parasite conservation framework. DRA frameworks rarely consider parasite conservation. Rather, parasites are typically considered myopically in terms of the potential harm they may cause their host. To address this, a previously proposed parasite conservation framework was incorporated into an existing streamlined DRA methodology. Incorporation of the two frameworks was achieved readily, although there is opportunity for further refinement of this process. This DRA is significant as it is the first performed for any monotreme species, and implements the emerging approach of balancing the health and disease risk of the host with parasite conservation.

Abstract:Eusociality in insects has arisen multiple times independently in Hymenoptera (bees, wasps, ants), Blattodea (termites) and Coleoptera (beetles). In Hymenoptera and Blattodea, the evolution of eusociality led to massive species proliferation. In the hyperdiverse Coleoptera, eusociality evolved only once, in the ancient Australian ambrosia beetle species Austroplatypus incompertus (Curculionidae: Platypodinae). This species occurs in mesic eucalypt forests of eastern Australia, from Victoria to northern New South Wales. Based on few individuals collected from the southern and northern edges of the species distribution it was initially described as two distinct species; however, the names were later synonymised as no morphological differences were found in analyses of more specimens. Recent mitochondrial haplotype analyses revealed substantial latitudinal divergence across the distribution of A. incompertus. To address this apparent disparity between morphological and molecular data, we sequenced and analysed a SNP panel of over 6,656 biallelic markers from 187 individuals of 11 sites across 1000 km of this species range. Our data indicate that eusocial demographic processes such as low colony establishment success rate, limited dispersal and reliance on few reproductive individuals, together with substantial habitat fragmentation contributed to the population genetic structure of this species. We further identified that the Hunter Valley biogeographic barrier split the species into two distinct clades, with both clades in secondary close contact on the Barrington Tops plateau without any discernible admixture. Our results support the resurrection of a second species of Austroplatypus which has important consequences for the evolution eusociality in Coleoptera and the systematics of Platypodinae.

Abstract:Abstract Egg-laying mammals (monotremes) are the only extant mammalian outgroup to therians (marsupial and eutherian animals) and provide key insights into mammalian evolution 1,2 . Here we generate and analyse reference genomes of the platypus ( Ornithorhynchus anatinus ) and echidna ( Tachyglossus aculeatus ), which represent the only two extant monotreme lineages. The nearly complete platypus genome assembly has anchored almost the entire genome onto chromosomes, markedly improving the genome continuity and gene annotation. Together with our echidna sequence, the genomes of the two species allow us to detect the ancestral and lineage-specific genomic changes that shape both monotreme and mammalian evolution. We provide evidence that the monotreme sex chromosome complex originated from an ancestral chromosome ring configuration. The formation of such a unique chromosome complex may have been facilitated by the unusually extensive interactions between the multi-X and multi-Y chromosomes that are shared by the autosomal homologues in humans. Further comparative genomic analyses unravel marked differences between monotremes and therians in haptoglobin genes, lactation genes and chemosensory receptor genes for smell and taste that underlie the ecological adaptation of monotremes.

A Spur to Atavism: Placing Platypus Poison

Abstract:For over two centuries, the platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus) has been constructed and categorized in multiple ways. An unprecedented mélange of anatomical features and physiological functions, it long remained a systematic quandary. Nevertheless, since 1797, naturalists and biologists have pursued two recurring obsessions. Investigations into platypus reproduction and lactation have focused attention largely upon females of the species. Despite its apparent admixture of avian, reptilian and mammalian characters, the platypus was soon placed as a rudimentary mammal--primitive, naïve and harmless. This article pursues a different taxonomic trajectory, concentrating on a specifically male anatomical development: the crural spur and venom gland on the hind legs. Once the defining characteristic of both the platypus and echidna (Tachyglossus aculeatus), by 1830 this sexed spur had been largely dismissed as inactive and irrelevant. For a creature regularly depicted as a biological outlier, the systematic and evolutionary implications of platypus poison have remained largely overlooked. In Australia, however, sporadic cases of 'spiking' led to consistent homologies being remarked between the platypus crural system and the venom glands of snakes. As with its reproductive reliance upon eggs, possession of an endogenous poison suggested significant reptilian affinities, yet the platypus has rarely been classed as an advanced reptile. Indeed, ongoing uncertainty regarding the biological purpose of the male's spur has ostensibly posed a directional puzzle. As with so many of its traits, however, platypus poison has been consistently described as a redundant remnant, rather than an emergent feature indicating evolutionary advance.
