Abstract:The 2023 Annual Review Issue of The Journal of Pathology, Recent Advances in Pathology, contains 12 invited reviews on topics of current interest in pathology. This year, our subjects include immuno-oncology and computational pathology approaches for diagnostic and research applications in human disease. Reviews on the tissue microenvironment include the effects of apoptotic cell-derived exosomes, how understanding the tumour microenvironment predicts prognosis, and the growing appreciation of the diverse functions of fibroblast subtypes in health and disease. We also include up-to-date reviews of modern aspects of the molecular basis of malignancies, and our final review covers new knowledge of vascular and lymphatic regeneration in cardiac disease. Jordan Glass is an author on ‘ A thermal performance curve perspective explains decades of disagreements over how air temperature affects the flight metabolism of honey bees’, published in JEB. Jordan conducted the research described in this article while a Graduate student in Jon F. Harrison's lab at Arizona State University, USA. He is now a Postdoctoral research fellow in the lab of Michael E. Dillon at the University of Wyoming, USA, investigating how environmental factors affect the performance of pollinating insects to determine when they can be active and where they can live.

Abstract:buy this issue With the dramatic rise of eco-Marxism in recent years, a corresponding revolution has been taking place in studies of the human-nonhuman animal relationship. Previous critical analyses with respect to the position of animals in human society have been largely dictated by animal-rights discourse, more recently represented by figures such as Peter Singer. Many of these analyses contend that Karl Marx, Marxism, and historical materialism understand the human-nonhuman animal relationship through a dualist, "speciesist," or human-centric, framework—a critique most famously championed by pioneering ecosocialist Ted Benton. This issue is dedicated to analyzing the theoretical propositions underlying Marx's analysis and to demonstrate the antispeciesist and antidualist aspects of his evolutionary-materialist understanding.

Abstract:Genomic data are becoming increasingly affordable and easy to collect, and new tools for their analysis are appearing rapidly. Conservation biologists are interested in using this information to assist in management and planning but are typically limited financially and by the lack of genomic resources available for non-model taxa. It is therefore important to be aware of the pitfalls as well as the benefits of applying genomic approaches. Here, we highlight recent methods aimed at standardizing population assessments of genetic variation, inbreeding, and forms of genetic load and methods that help identify past and ongoing patterns of genetic interchange between populations, including those subjected to recent disturbance. We emphasize challenges in applying some of these methods and the need for adequate bioinformatic support. We also consider the promises and challenges of applying genomic approaches to understand adaptive changes in natural populations to predict their future adaptive capacity. Theistic evolution and evolutionary ethics: Henry Fairfield Osborn and Huxley's legacy

Abstract:Scholars have often considered evolutionary social theories a product of Positivist scientism and the naturalization of ethics. Yet the theistic foundations of many evolutionary theories proposed between the nineteenth and the twentieth centuries bolstered the belief that following natural laws was morally desirable, if not vital, to guaranteeing social and moral progress. In the early twentieth century, American paleontologist and leading evolutionist Henry Fairfield Osborn represented one of the most authoritative advocates of this interpretation of natural normativity. Particularly during the last years of his career, Osborn used theological arguments to reinforce his advocacy of evolutionary ethics and social control policies, which led him to challenge his "old master" Thomas Huxley regarding the separation between evolution and moral conduct. This article examines the development of Osborn's evolutionary ethics, with particular regard to its bearing on the American debate on euthenics. I argue that theistic topics played a major rhetorical role in the attempt to justify normative conclusions drawn from ostensible laws of evolution.
