Abstract:Abstract The availability and easy access of large-scale experimental and computational materials data have enabled the emergence of accelerated development of algorithms and models for materials property prediction, structure prediction, and generative design of materials. However, the lack of user-friendly materials informatics web servers has severely constrained the wide adoption of such tools in the daily practice of materials screening, tinkering, and design space exploration by materials scientists. Herein we first survey current materials informatics web apps and then propose and develop MaterialsAtlas.org, a web-based materials informatics toolbox for materials discovery, which includes a variety of routinely needed tools for exploratory materials discovery, including material’s composition and structure validity check (e.g. charge neutrality, electronegativity balance, dynamic stability, Pauling rules), materials property prediction (e.g. band gap, elastic moduli, hardness, and thermal conductivity), search for hypothetical materials, and utility tools. These user-friendly tools can be freely accessed at http://www.materialsatlas.org . We argue that such materials informatics apps should be widely developed by the community to speed up materials discovery processes.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The main aim of this paper is to address the issue of accelerating the discovery process of new materials in the field of materials science, particularly by developing a user-friendly web application to facilitate this process. Specifically, the research team identified the shortcomings of current materials informatics web applications and proposed a new platform called MaterialsAtlas.org. The main objectives of the MaterialsAtlas.org platform include: 1. **Filling the Gap**: The number of existing materials informatics web servers is limited, and most focus on data infrastructure rather than providing practical tools for material screening, exploring design space, etc. 2. **Improving Accessibility**: Most experimental teams lack the expertise to implement, train, and deploy complex algorithms, thus requiring easy-to-use web tools. 3. **Accelerating Material Discovery**: By providing a range of practical tools to support the entire process from material composition verification to property prediction to theoretical discovery and material design, thereby accelerating the discovery of new materials. The core functionalities provided by the platform include: - **Composition and Structure Verification**: Such as charge neutrality check, electronegativity balance check, formation energy prediction, etc. - **Material Property Prediction**: For example, band gap, elastic modulus, hardness, and thermal conductivity, etc. - **Hypothetical Material Database**: Providing a database of generated but not yet experimentally verified materials for users to find potential functional materials. - **Practical Tools**: Such as crystal symmetry and lattice parameter prediction, template-based crystal structure prediction, etc. Through these functionalities, MaterialsAtlas.org aims to become a powerful toolbox supporting exploratory material discovery research, especially for the study of inorganic crystal materials.
