Abstract:The licensing of new reactors implies the use of verified and validated neutronic codes. Numerical validation can rely on sensitivity and uncertainty studies, but they require repeated execution of time-consuming neutron flux and depletion calculations. The computational costs can be reduced by using perturbation theories. However, the uncoupled Depletion Perturbation Theory is restricted to single integral values such as nuclide density. Relying on reduced-basis approaches, which reconstruct all nuclide densities at once, is one way to get around this restriction. Furthermore, the adjoint-based reduced-order model uses the direct and adjoint equations for projection. For diffusion or transport calculations, the Exact-to-Precision Generalized Perturbation Theory was developed. Still, no models for depletion calculations are readily available. Therefore, this paper describes a novel adjoint-based reduced-order model for the Bateman Equation. It uses a range-finding algorithm to create the basis and the uncoupled Depletion Perturbation Theory for the reconstruction of the first order replaced by with a first order formulation. Our paper shows that for several perturbed cases, the depletion reduced-order model successfully reconstructs the nuclide densities. As a result, this serves as a proof of concept for our adjoint-based reduced-order model, which can perform sensitivity and uncertainty burn-up analysis in a shorter time.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to reduce the time cost of burn - up calculations in nuclear reactor physics. Specifically, the authors have developed a novel Adjoint - Based Reduced - Order Model (AB - ROM) to solve the sensitivity and uncertainty analysis problems in the Bateman Equation. The traditional Uncoupled Depletion Perturbation Theory (UDPT) is less efficient when dealing with a large number of responses, because a change in the density of each isotope requires the calculation of an adjoint importance function separately. This is very time - consuming in practical applications, especially in Pressurized Water Reactors (PWRs), where hundreds of thousands of depletion media may need to be processed, and each medium may contain up to 50 isotopes. The newly proposed AB - ROM creates a reduced - order basis by combining UDPT and the Range - Finding Algorithm, so that it can reconstruct the density changes of all isotopes at once. This method not only significantly reduces the number of required adjoint importance function calculations, but also enables the completion of sensitivity and uncertainty analysis in a relatively short time. The paper verifies the effectiveness and accuracy of this method through a simplified numerical example of the Uranium - Xenon - Samarium (U - Xe - Sm) chain reaction. In summary, the main objective of this paper is to provide an efficient and accurate method to replace the traditional time - consuming burn - up solvers, especially when performing sensitivity and uncertainty analysis.
