Abstract:A well studied classical problem is the harmonicity of functions satisfying the restricted mean-value property (RMVP) for domains in $\mathbb{R}^n$. Recently, the author along with Biswas investigated the problem in the general setting of Riemannian manifolds and obtained results in terms of unrestricted boundary limits of the function on a full measure subset of the boundary. However in the context of classical Fatou-Littlewood type theorems for the boundary behavior of harmonic functions, a genuine query is to replace the condition on unrestricted boundary limits with the more natural notion of non-tangential boundary limits. The aim of this article is to answer this question in the local setup for pre-compact domains with smooth boundary in Riemannian manifolds and in the global setup for non-positively curved Harmonic manifolds of purely exponential volume growth. This extends a classical result of Fenton for the unit disk in $\mathbb{R}^2$.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to extend the Morse theory for geodesics to the conical manifolds. We define these manifolds as submanifolds of $\R^n$ with a finite number of conical singularities. To formulate a good Morse theory we must use an appropriate definition of geodesic. The main theorem of this paper claims that, although the energy is nonsmooth, we can find a continuous retraction of its sublevels in absence of critical points. So, we can give a good definition of index for isolated critical values and for isolated critical points. We prove that Morse relations hold and, at last, we give a definition of multiplicity of geodesics which is geometrical meaningful.

Abstract:Considering regular mappings of Euclidean spaces, we study the distortion of the Hausdorff dimension of a given set under restrictions on the rank of the gradient on the set. This problem was solved for the classical cases of k -smooth and Hölder mappings by Dubovitskii, Bates, and Moreira. We solve the problem for Sobolev and fractional Sobolev classes as well. Here we study the Sobolev case under minimal integrability assumptions that guarantee in general only the continuity of a mapping (rather than differentiability everywhere). Some new facts are found out in the classical smooth case. The proofs are mostly based on our previous joint papers with Bourgain and Kristensen (2013, 2015).

Abstract:In the previous paper [Ch1], we studied the Minimax Principle as well as the Ljusternik–Schnirelman category theory for harmonic maps with prescribed boundary data defined on Riemann surfaces by the heat flow method. In this paper, we shall continue our study on Morse theory. Our main results are the Morse inequalities (Theorem 1) for isolated harmonic maps, and the Morse handle body decomposition for nondegenerate harmonic maps (Theorem 2). These results are extensions of the work of K. Uhlenbeck [U1], where the harmonic maps are defined on manifolds without boundary, and are all assumed to be nondegenerate. Our method is based on the heat flow by which the deformation is constructed. In contrast to the perturbation method developed by K. Uhlenbeck [U1], our approach seems more direct than hers.

Abstract:In this paper, we show that, for scalar reaction-diffusion equations $u_t=u_{xx}+f(x,u,u_x)$ on the circle $S^1$, the Morse-Smale property is generic with respect to the non-linearity $f$. In \cite{CR}, Czaja and Rocha have proved that any connecting orbit, which connects two hyperbolic periodic orbits, is transverse and that there does not exist any homoclinic orbit, connecting a hyperbolic periodic orbit to itself. In \cite{JR}, we have shown that, generically with respect to the non-linearity $f$, all the equilibria and periodic orbits are hyperbolic. Here we complete these results by showing that any connecting orbit between two hyperbolic equilibria with distinct Morse indices or between a hyperbolic equilibrium and a hyperbolic periodic orbit is automatically transverse. We also show that, generically with respect to $f$, there does not exist any connection between equilibria with the same Morse index. The above properties, together with the existence of a compact global attractor and the Poincaré-Bendixson property, allow us to deduce that, generically with respect to $f$, the non-wandering set consists in a finite number of hyperbolic equilibria and periodic orbits . The main tools in the proofs include the lap number property, exponential dichotomies and the Sard-Smale theorem. The proofs also require a careful analysis of the asymptotic behavior of solutions of the linearized equations along the connecting orbits.

Morse theory for the Yang-Mills energy function near flat connections

Abstract:A result (Corollary 4.3) in an article by Uhlenbeck (1985) asserts that the $W^{1,p}$-distance between the gauge-equivalence class of a connection $A$ and the moduli subspace of flat connections $M(P)$ on a principal $G$-bundle $P$ over a closed Riemannian manifold $X$ of dimension $d\geq 2$ is bounded by a constant times the $L^p$ norm of the curvature, $\|F_A\|_{L^p(X)}$, when $G$ is a compact Lie group, $F_A$ is $L^p$-small, and $p>d/2$. While we prove that this estimate holds when the Yang-Mills energy function on the space of Sobolev connections is Morse-Bott along the moduli subspace $M(P)$ of flat connections, it does not hold when the Yang-Mills energy function fails to be Morse-Bott, such as at the product connection in the moduli space of flat $\mathrm{SU}(2)$ connections over a real two-dimensional torus. However, we prove that a useful modification of Uhlenbeck's estimate always holds provided one replaces $\|F_A\|_{L^p(X)}$ by a suitable power $\|F_A\|_{L^p(X)}^\lambda$, where the positive exponent $\lambda$ reflects the structure of non-regular points in $M(P)$. The proof of our refinement involves gradient flow and Morse theory for the Yang-Mills energy function on the quotient space of Sobolev connections and a Lojasiewicz distance inequality for the Yang-Mills energy function. A special case of our estimate, when $X$ has dimension four and the connection $A$ is anti-self-dual, was proved by Fukaya (1998) by entirely different methods. Lastly, we prove that if $A$ is a smooth Yang-Mills connection with small enough energy, then $A$ is necessarily flat.

Abstract:We establish Luzin N and Morse--Sard properties for functions from the Sobolev space $W^{n,1}({\mathbb R}^{n})$. Using these results we prove that almost all level sets are finite disjoint unions of $C^1$--smooth compact manifolds of dimension $n-1$. These results remain valid also within the larger space of functions of bounded variation $BV_{n}({\mathbb R}^{n})$. For the proofs we establish and use some new results on Luzin--type approximation of Sobolev and BV--functions by $C^k$--functions, where the exceptional sets have small Hausdorff content.

Abstract:\begin{abstract} We study the Morse-Smale property for the following scalar semilinear parabolic equation on the circle $S^1$, \begin{equation*} u_{t}=u_{xx}+f(t,u,u_{x}),\,\,t>0,\,x\in S^{1}=\mathbb{R}/2\pi \mathbb{Z}, \end{equation*} where $f$ is a $C^2$ function and $T$-periodic in $t$. Assume that the equation admits a compact global attractor $\mathcal{A}$ and let $P$ be the Poincaré map of this equation. We exclude homoclinic connection for hyperbolic fixed points of $P$ and prove that stable and unstable manifolds for any two heteroclinic hyperbolic fixed points of $P$ intersect transversely. Further, this equation admits the Morse-Smale property provided that all $\omega$-limit sets (in the case $f(t,u,u_x)=f(t,u,-u_x)$, the $\omega$-limit set is just a fixed point) of the corresponding Poincaré map are hyperbolic. \end{abstract}

Existence and Morse Index of two free boundary embedded geodesics on Riemannian 2-disks with convex boundary

Abstract:We prove that a free boundary curve shortening flow on closed surfaces with a strictly convex boundary remains noncollapsed for a finite time in the sense of the reflected chord-arc profile introduced by Langford-Zhu. This shows that such flow converges to free boundary embedded geodesic in infinite time, or shrinks to a round half-point on the boundary. As a consequence, we prove the existence of two free boundary embedded geodesics on a Riemannian $2$-disk with a strictly convex boundary. Moreover, we prove that there exists a simple closed geodesic with Morse Index $1$ and $2$. This settles the free boundary analog of Grayson's theorem.

Abstract:For a regular (in a sense) mapping v:ℝ^n →ℝ^d we study the following problem: let S be a subset of m-critical a set Z̃_v,m={ rank∇ v≤ m} and the equality ℋ^τ(S)=0 (or the inequality ℋ^τ(S)<∞) holds for some τ>0. Does it imply that ℋ^σ(v(S))=0 for some σ=σ(τ,m)? (Here ℋ^τ means the τ-dimensional Hausdorff measure.) For the classical classes C^k-smooth and C^k+α-Holder mappings this problem was solved in the papers by Bates and Moreira. We solve the problem for Sobolev W^k_p and fractional Sobolev W^k+α_p classes as well. Note that we study the Sobolev case under minimal integrability assumptions p=max(1,n/k), i.e., it guarantees in general only the continuity (not everywhere differentiability) of a mapping. In particular, there is an interesting and unexpected analytical phenomena here: if τ=n (i.e., in the case of Morse–Sard theorem), then the value σ(τ) is the same for the Sobolev W^k_p and for the classical C^k-smooth case. But if τ<n, then the value σ depends on p also; the value σ for C^k case could be obtained as the limit when p→∞. The similar phenomena holds for Holder continuous C^k+α and for the fractional Sobolev W^k+α_p classes. The proofs of the most results are based on our previous joint papers with J. Bourgain and J. Kristensen (2013, 2015). We also crucially use very deep Y. Yomdin's entropy estimates of near critical values for polynomials (based on algebraic geometry tools).

Abstract:We give a Morse-theoretic characterization of simple closed geodesics on Riemannian $2$-spheres. On any Riemannian $2$-sphere endowed with a generic metric, we show there exists a simple closed geodesic with Morse index $1$, $2$ and $3$. In particular, for an orientable Riemannian surface we prove strong Morse inequalities for the length functional applied to the space of simple closed curves.

Abstract:The classical theory of attractive central force problem on the standard (flat) Euclidean plane can be generalized to surfaces by reformulating the basic underlying physical principles by means of differential geometry. Attractive central force problems on state manifolds appear quite often and in several different context ranging from nonlinear control theory to mobile robotics, thermodynamics, artificial intelligence, signal transmission and processing and so on. The aim of the present paper is to analyze the variational properties of the circular periodic orbits in the case of attractive power-law potentials of the Riemannian distance on revolution's surfaces. We compute the stability properties and the Morse index by developing a suitable intersection index in the Lagrangian Grassmannian and symplectic context.

Abstract:We define a notion of Morse function and establish Morse theory-like theorems over offsets of any compact set in a Euclidean space at regular values of their distance function. Using non-smooth analysis and tools from geometric measure theory, we prove that the homotopy type of the sublevels sets of these Morse functions changes at a critical value by gluing exactly one cell around each critical point.

Abstract:We give a description of the structure of finite Morse index solutions to two free boundary problems in $\mathbb{R}^2$. These free boundary problems are models of phase transition and they are closely related to minimal hypersurfaces. We show that these finite Morse index solutions have finitely many ends and they converge exponentially to these ends at infinity. As an important tool in the proof, a quadratic decay estimate for the curvature of free boundaries is established.
