Abstract:The determination of physical object referring terms in the bronze inscriptions of the Shang and Zhou Dynasties involves several critical considerations. First, it necessitates addressing the potential ambiguity between the names of individuals and the names of physical objects. Second, it requires resolving potential ambiguities between the names of ethnic groups and physical objects. Third, it involves the challenge of distinguishing between monosyllabic, disyllabic, and polysyllabic physical object referring terms. Finally, there may be disagreements in the analysis of grammatical structure components. This article is dedicated to examining and providing insights into these issues from the four perspectives mentioned above.

Abstract:Shimen was a made-made tunnel dug at the south end of the Baoxie Valley.As a gateway tunnel leading from the Guanzhong Plains to Sichuan in the Qinling Mountains in ancient times,Shimen carries large quantities of scenic spots and relics,the majority of which are graphic carvings.Many of these carved inscriptions were varieties of literary works written by famous men of letters.For literary styles,there were eulogies,inscriptions,epigraphs,accounts,poetic prose and poems.For documentary matters,what were recorded were many and various,including personalities,events,scenic spots,travel accounts.And for artistic taste,the works were narrative,lyrical and documentary.
On The Frequency Classification of the Inscriptions on Bronze of Shang Dynasty

Abstract:Up till the end of 2009,we conclude that the number of characters on bronzes of Shang Dynasty is 1343,and 569 of which can be explained by present-day words.The number of the frequent characters which have more than 10 frequency is 203.The number of those less frequently used characters which have more than 2 frequency and less than 10 is 515.The number of the infrequent characters which only have 1 frequency is 625.Among them,the most frequent character is 父,which exceeds thousand.The next one was 亚.In the high-frequency characters,there are no function words,verbs and numbers.All of them are nouns,such as the ten heavenly stems,the twelve rarthly branches and the appellation of relatives.

Abstract:Li Shen's 46-line poem written after he encountered calumny in the Hanyuan was an important document about the contention between Niu and Li and the literature in Tang Dynasty. Although it was the poet's personal account of history, yet a lot of people and events were mentioned, especially the contention between the two different schools headed by Niu and Li. It is of great significance if we use this as a case to explore the relationship between the political events and literature in Tang Dynasty.

Abstract:SHANGGUAN Yi and Wan'er are two leaders successively in poetic circle in early Tang Dynasty, and influence the development of poetry in Tang Dynasty. Recently, the excavation of SHANGGUAN Wan'er Epitaph brings a new chance to the research of the literature in early Tang Dynasty, especially the record of the family background in half space of the epitaph which provides crucial original empirical materials for the study of early Tang Dynasty through the family literature.SHANGGUAN Wan'er Epitaph is also an excellent biographical literature, which reveals a new change on the epitaph style through the special form of biography and the obscure words with euphemistic expression.

Abstract:This is a commented translation into Russian of three inscriptions on the ancient Chinese bronze vessels from the late Shang-Yin period (end of the 2nd millennium BC). The inscriptions found on bronze vessels constitute a special kind of sources for the ancient history of China. These epigraphic documents provide important, otherwise unrecorded data on life in the archaic society. Contrary to the texts of classical works, the nature of the ancient Chinese bronze inscriptions is ritualistic. They were not intended to be “read” but served as a tool of sacred communication with the world of dead ancestors. In fact, their “readers” were otherworldly forces. The correct understanding of these bronze inscriptions requires a specialist commentary. The publisher includes the inscriptions on the late Shang-Yin ritual vessels into a wide historical and cultural context. It is hoped this context will facilitate the understanding of the inherent meaning of the inscriptions. The comments will outline the range of problems associated with the interpretation of this type of sources from the late Shang-Yin period.

Abstract:In 1978 stone inscription was discovered in ancient tombs of the Songshan Mountain in Jianxiang,Shandong.In the middle is the pattern;on the right side there are 10 lines of words,and on the left side one line of words.Archeologists believe that the tomb is between the end of East Han and West Jin.The portrait-stone was removed later and used by someone else,so the surface of the stone inscription is covered with lime and the words are not for the ancient tomb excavated.Since the original stone is the folk inscription of the Han Dynasty with imperfect skills and irregular character structure,mistakes in interpretation are inevitable.The present article analyzes and discusses the stone inscription in the four aspects of the identity of the author,the custom of tree-planting,the theme of the inscription and the death time of XU An-guo and his son.

Abstract:Zheng Yu Bing Hu was a bronze ware made in the Spring and Autumn Period.This paper interprets a character of the bronze inscriptions on it with reference to the bamboo slips of the Warring States Period,which also gives us new understanding of the meaning of "Chun Qiu"(literally spring and autumn) that used to be explained as "Si Shi"(four seasons of the year).

Abstract:There were many categories of near-synonymy and also many categories of antonym in ancient Chinese literary theory.The former categories were coupled with nearly synonymous popular sayings while the latter categories were coupled with antonymous popular sayings.Ancient people preferred to use these categories of sayings to define and discuss literature,just because they kept such cultural psychology and cognitive habits of thinking carefully and respecting tradition that they were reluctant to create new words and expressions to be criticized for submerging the origin of things and acting rashly,and also because they wanted to ensure that their argumentation was eloquent and profound,so that these categories could fully display the innermost essences of literary creating,and show the law of the universe that all things act mutually and perform reciprocally.This reveals the humanity root of Chinese literature,and forms one of the important characteristics of Chinese traditional literary theory.

Abstract:We present a detailed analysis of the chemical alloying data (Cu, Sn, Pb) on the bronzes recovered from the Late Shang capital at Yinxu, revealing a complex pattern which varies by social status and object typology, and which also changes over time. The preference for higher tin in the bronze vessels and weapons for the elites during Yinxu Phase II gives way to a more binary pattern (with weapons being preferentially alloyed with lead) for the lower elites of phase II, which becomes prevalent in subsequent phases. These changes are interpreted in terms of different 'alloying practices', which attempts to reconstruct the way in which the alloys are created at the point of casting. The alloy type described here as A1/A2 (11–24% tin, 0 to 3–5% lead) seems most likely to have been created by mixing together three components, corresponding to mixing relatively pure copper, tin and lead. This contrasts with the suggestion in the Kaogong Ji , several hundred years later, that binary pre-prepared alloys were used. It is now important to determine when such a change might have occurred. The suggestion that alloy type B (low tin, variably high lead) could have been made by combining pure copper with a slightly impure lead (95%Pb/5%Sn) hints that such practices might have started during the Shang, but requires more work, especially on the intervening Western and Eastern Zhou periods.

Abstract:It is proved by literature and great amount unearthed archaeological data that the Shu place is on the present Chengdu Plain. The data from the inscriptions on bones prove that the Shu place in the period of Yin-Shang dynasty already established linkage with Yin-Shang Empire situated in the middle and lower basin of the Yellow River. In the starting period, there had local fight between the two; afterward, they set up and kept friendly association. The court of Yin-Shang dynasty sent people to Shu and Shu sent people to Yin-Shang as well. But under the condition of far and difficult ways, the association was not close and Shu was not a vassal state to the former. Both the two affected each other and kept its own independence respectively.

Abstract:This review considers the book of the American sinologist A. Schwartz “The Oracle Bone Inscriptions from Huayuanzhuang East. Translated with an Introduction and Commentary” was published in 2019. The book is a commented translation and study of inscriptions on divination bones (turtle shields and bull shoulder blades) from the eastern sector of Huayuanzhuang in Yinxu (Anyang, Henan). This epigraphic monument dates back to the turn of the 13th–12th centuries BC and currently represents the most complete and interesting corpus of divinatory inscriptions. Despite the fact that the inscriptions under consideration cover a relatively short period of time, they contain many details, which, as if piece by piece, form the general picture of Shan reality. It is noteworthy that the customer of these divinations was not the Shang ruler, but a figure from his inner circle — Zi, who was presumably the son of the wang. After a thorough analysis of the inscriptions, A. Schwartz offers a reconstruction of various aspects of the daily activities, rituals, and life of the elite of the Shan society — the wang, his reigning wife, the prince, and the persons who are in their subordination. The basis of A. Schwartz’s research is a complete translation of divinatory inscriptions into English, so this review focuses on the problems of interpreting the most important terms found in divinatory inscriptions from the Eastern Huayuanzhuang Sector.

Abstract:Six thin Chinese bronze chariot accessory sheets from Songjia cemetery in Shaanxi province were dated to the late Western Zhou dynasty (ninth to eighth centuries bce) and analysed for their elemental composition and motif techniques. The objects were cold worked and annealed with embossed motifs and carved lines. This is the only case of cold working and annealing with embossed motifs and carved lines in China; these techniques may have come from or been influenced by other cultures. These findings are important for revealing the development of the cold‐working, annealing techniques and relevant motif techniques in China.

Abstract:<span>It has been 120 years since the discovery of the oracle bones in 1899, which not only confirmed the existence of the Shang dynasty, but also provided first-hand materials for the study of history of the Shang. In this article, the author divides the 120 years of Shang history into three stages by looking at important discoveries in oracle-bone materials and their compilation. In the first phase, from 1899 to 1927, the oracle bones used were all non-scientific excavated materials, represented by Sun Yirang, Wang Guowei, and Luo Zhenyu. In the second stage, from 1928 to 1977, the oracle bone material entered the scientific discovery stage, represented by Dong Zuobin, Hu Houxuan, and Guo Moruo. In the third stage, from 1978 to the present, the study of the history of the Shang dynasty made considerable progress with the publication of the oracle bones collection and the improvement of recording methods, represented by the works of Qiu Xigui and Li Xueqin.</span>

Abstract:At present the bronze study mainly focuses on the bronze vessels scientifically discovered by field work.Taosi site at Xiangfen County in Shanxi Province has close relations with the origin of bronze in China.According to the record of history documents,Shanxi will have big discoveries in archaeology of Shang dynasty.At the late stage of Shang dynasty,the local culture of Shanxi contributed to the development of Eurasian Steppe culture.The discoveries of Tianma-Qucun site and the Cemetery of Jin clan are of valuable significance to the research of bronze vessels,Jin state history and the Pre-qin history of China.

Abstract:The Chinese characters evolution fromseal script to clerical script in Han Dynasty underwent one a new process of development and stability from top-level design to folk application, where the most important relic, inscriptions of bronze mirror, together with the bamboo slips and stele inscriptions, constituted the basic calligraphy aestheticsat that time, forming historical legends in the smoke of casting. Among the mirrors of Han Dynasty, there are a lot of surviving inscription mirrors, the chirography on which has extremely rich subjective design, showing important aesthetic characteristics. Most of the previous writings have tended to study explanation and entry, and there are few studies based on the chirography. The classification and analysis of the considerable and complex inscriptions of bronze mirror based on archaeological typology indicate that at different stages and in different regions, the sources of popular materials are similar, with typical styles gradually appearing, different creative effects, as well as fresh and interesting cases. Comparing the inscription chirography with bamboo and wood slips and calligraphy on rubbings, it is possible to see the combination of “mirror caster” and “ Daobili (petty official drawing up indictments)”, new calligraphic patterns appear in the smoke of the fire. The calligraphy is applied to bronze mirrors, and is cut and transformed by the craftsmen to be suitable for deformation, so that the character shape is integrated with bronze and stone tablet casting, presenting a unique decorative taste and design meaning, carrying the open and inclusive spirit of Han Dynasty.
