Abstract:The synthesis of supramolecular compounds with a high degree of controllability and the targeted modulation of their topological transitions pose significant challenges in situ. In this study, we have successfully constructed an array of discrete structures based on a series of bidentate pyridyl ligands (L1, L2, and L3), which were subsequently ligated with half‐sandwiched (Cp*Ir fragments) building blocks. Our further investigations elucidate a strategy for coordinating the relative lengths of the bidentate ligands with the building blocks, achieving specific concentrations that drive the transformation of tetranuclear metal macrocycles into Borromean rings. Notably, the distinct characteristics of the three pyridyl ligands markedly influence the efficiency of synthesis and the topological conversion of the supramolecular macrocycles. Detailed structural analyses reveal that π‐π stacking interactions, the electron‐donating capabilities of the ligands, and hydrogen‐bonding interactions are pivotal in stabilizing these molecular macrocycles and in facilitating their transformation to Borromean rings. The analyses underscore the importance of the electron‐rich effect induced by the sulfur atoms in the ligands and the regulation and modulation of the pyridine functional group in contributing to the structural stability and altered characteristics of the macrocycles.

Abstract:Three aromatic ligands containing carboxyl-or nitrogen-substituted groups were employed in the construction of half-sandwich complexes via C-H activation-directed assembly, leading to the construction of eleven multinuclear organometallic iridium or rhodium complexes, including those of bi-, tetra-, hexa- and octanuclear, under mild conditions, with the help of N-donor linkers. These complexes were characterized by proton NMR, IR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, electrospray ionization (ESI) mass spectrometry and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. In these complexes, two complexes were observed to exist as isomers, and several racemic enantiomers can be found. X-ray crystal structure determinations show that a series of supramolecular tunnel architectures are formed by stacking through hydrogen-bond interactions, and solvent or trifluoromethylsulfonate anion guests were found to be located in certain parts of the channels. This work represents the first successful construction of octanuclear half-sandwich complexes based on the cleavage of C-H bonds.

Abstract:Main observation and conclusionThe construction of interlocked topologies by metal‐cation‐template methods has been extensively explored. However, construction of these species using template‐free chemical self‐assembly methods is hard to rationally achieve due to the inherent unpredictability of self‐assembly processes. In this work, a strategy to construct interlocked [2]catenanes by coordination‐driven template‐free self‐assembly is demonstrated, whereby combining rigid bidentate ligands with large conjugated‐π area units and building blocks with appropriate lengths facilitated construction of interlocked [2]catenane compounds. Two rigid bidentate ligands, L1 and L2, were chosen to self‐assemble with three dinuclear building blocks B1, B2 and B3. Ultimately, the successful construction of three [2]catenanes demonstrated the validity of the strategy. Although [2]catenanes are the simplest of all interlocked topologies, this motif is the basis for constructing more intricate topologies. This successful strategy may therefore lead to construction of other, more intricate topologies in the future.

Abstract:Using the strategy of ligand fine-tuning by steric hindrance, we successfully obtained Solomon links ( 4_1^2 ) and figure-eight knots (4 1 ) with half-sandwich organometallic unit and amino-acid embedded ligands. The two curved bidentate ligands exhibit subtle differences, whereas they result in totally distinct entanglement modes. An alcoholysis reaction with the ligands leads to the formation of a molecular tweezer. Notably, unsymmetrical ligands were utilized in the self-assembly process to explore the formation of directional molecules, and the reactions exhibited selectivity due to comprehensive π interactions and multiple hydrogen bonds. The topologies and behavior of the above structures were confirmed through single-crystal X-ray diffraction, nuclear magnetic resonance techniques and mass spectrometry.

Abstract:Stimuli-responsive structural transformations between discrete coordination supramolecular architectures not only are essential to construct smart functional materials but also provide a versatile molecular-level platform to mimic the biological transformation process. We report here the controlled self-assembly of three topologically unprecedented conjoined twin-cages, i.e., one stapled interlocked Pd12L6 cage (2) and two helically isomeric Pd6L3 cages (3 and 4) made from the same cis-blocked palladium corners and a new bis-bidentate ligand (1). While cage 2 features three mechanically coupled cavities, cages 3 and 4 are topologically isomeric helicate-based twin-cages based on the same metal/ligand stoichiometry. Sole formation of cage 2 or a dynamic mixture of cages 3 and 4 can be controlled by changing the solvents employed during the self-assembly. Structural conversions between cages 3 and 4 can be triggered by changes in both temperature/solvent and induced-fit guest encapsulations. Abstract:The synthesis of complicated supramolecular architectures and the study of their reversible structural transformations remains a fascinating challenge in the field of supramolecular chemistry. Herein, two types of novel coordination compounds, a non-intertwined ring-in-ring assembly and an abnormal trefoil knot were constructed from a strategically selected Cp*Rh building block and a semi-rigid N,N'-bis(4-pyridylmethyl)diphthalic diimide ligand via coordination-driven self-assembly. Remarkably, the reversible transformation between the abnormal trefoil knot and the ring-in-ring assembly or the corresponding tetranuclear macrocycle could be achieved by the synergistic effects of Ag+ ion coordination and alteration of the solvent. Single-crystal X-ray crystallographic data and NMR spectroscopic experiments support the structural assignments.

Abstract:Herein, we describe the utilization of isomeric pyridyl-substituted ligands featuring different coordination vectors to rationally design and construct a series of discrete organometallic assemblies with specific space conformations. In the case of tetranuclear macrocycles constructed from the ligand 3-bpb, different conformations of these assemblies with C-2v and C-2h point symmetry were revealed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Abstract:Two new chlorido-bridged dinuclear copper(II) complexes [Cu 2 Cl 2 (L 1 ) 2 ] ( 1 ) and [Cu 2 Cl 2 (L 2 ) 2 ] ( 2 ), where L 1 and L 2 are the deprotonated form of Schiff bases 2-[1-(2-morpholin-4-ylethylimino)ethyl]phenol (HL 1 ) and 2-[1-(2-piperidin-1-ylethylimino)ethyl]phenol respectively, are prepared and structurally characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectra, and single crystal X-ray crystallography. Complex 1 crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P 2 1 / c with unit cell dimensions a = 8.0816(2) Å, b = 19.1780(3) Å, c = 9.6757(3) Å, β = 106.465(2)°, V = 1438.13(6) Å 3 , Z = 2, R 1 = 0.0409, and wR 2 = 0.1085. Complex 2 crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P 2 1 / c with unit cell dimensions a = 7.7640(10) Å, b = 19.930(3) Å, c = 9.628(2) Å, β = 103.890(3)°, V = 1446.2(4) Å 3 , Z = 2, R 1 = 0.0634, and wR 2 = 0.1316. Each Cu atom in the complexes is coordinated by three donor atoms of the Schiff bases and by two bridging Cl atoms, forming square pyramidal geometry. The Cl anions are preferred bridging groups for the construction of dinuclear copper complexes with tridentate Schiff bases.

Abstract:CONSPECTUS: Over the last two decades, researchers have focused on the design and synthesis of supramolecular coordination complexes, which contain discrete functional structures with particular shapes and sizes, and are similar to classic metal−organic frameworks. Chemists can regulate many of these systems by judiciously choosing the metal centers and their adjoining ligands. These resulting complexes have unusual properties and therefore many applications, including molecular recognition, supramolecular catalysis, and some applications as nanomaterials. In addition, researchers have extensively developed synthetic methodologies for the construction of discrete self-assemblies. One of the most important challenges for scientists in this area is to be able to synthesize target structures that can be controlled in both length and width. For this reason, it is important that we understand the factors leading to special shapes and sizes of such architectures, especially how starting building blocks and functional ligands affect the final conformations and cavity sizes of the resulting assemblies. Towards this goal, we have developed a wide range of different organometallic architectures by rationally designing metalcontaining precursors and organic ligands. In this Account, we present our recent work, focusing on half-sandwich iridiumand rhodium-based organometallic assemblies that we obtained through rational design. We discuss their synthesis, structures, and applications for the encapsulation of guests and enzyme-mimicking catalysis. We first describe a series of self-assembled organometallic metallarectangles and metallacages, which we constructed from preorganized dinuclear half-sandwich molecular clips and suitable pyridyl ligands. We extended this strategy to tune the size of the obtained rectangles, creating large cavities by introduction of larger molecular clips. The cavity was found to exhibit selective and reversible CH2Cl2 adsorption properties while retaining single crystallinity. By using suitable molecular clips, we found we could use a number of metallacycles as organometallic templates to direct photochemical [2 + 2] cycloaddition reactions, even in the solid state. Due to their chemical stability and potential applications in catalytic reactions, researchers are giving significant attention to complexes with cyclometalated backbones. We also highlight our efforts to develop efficient approaches to utilize cyclometalated building blocks for the formation of organometallic assemblies. By incorporation of imine ligands or benzoic acids, bipyridine linking subunits, and half-sandwich iridium or rhodium fragments, we built up a series of cationic and neutral metallacycles through cyclometalation-driven self-assembly. In addition, we have developed an efficient route to carborane-based metallacycles, involving the exploitation of metal-induced B−H activation. The method can provide prism-like metallacages, which are efficient hosts for the recognition of planar aromatic guests. This effort provides an incentive to generate new building blocks for the construction of organometallic assemblies. Taken together, our results may lead to a promising future for the design of complicated enzyme-mimetic-catalyzed systems.

Abstract:Five new metal organic frameworks incorporating the angular tetratopic ligand with different transition metal ions and bent coligands have been synthesized: [Zn-4(L)(2)(4,4'-sdb)(4)(H2O)(2)]center dot 3H(2)O (1), [Zn-2(L)(2)(hfipbb)(2)(H2O)(3)] (2), [Zn(L)(oba)]center dot H2O (3), [Cd-2(L)(2)(4,4'-sdb)(2)]center dot 2H(2)O (4), [Cd-2(L)(hfipbb)-(H2O)(3)]center dot 2H(2)O (5), [L = 1,1'-oxybis[3,5-dipyridine-benzene, 4,4',-H(2)sdb = 4,4'-sulfonyldibenzoate, H(2)hfipbb = 4,4'-(hexafluoroisopropylidene)bis(benzoic acid), H(2)oba = 4,4'-oxybis(benzoate)]. Structural analysis reveals that the mixed ligands display versatile coordination modes to manage the metal ions to form homochiral, inclined polycatenation (1D -> 2D), 3-fold interpenetrating nets. However, the different coordinated modes, geometry, and flexibility of ligands around metal ions result in subtle differences in the final architecture. Bulk materials for 1 and 3 have a second-harmonic generation activity, approximately 0.4 and 0.8 times that of urea.

Abstract:Cyclic nanometre-scale sandwich complexes assembled from individual building blocks were synthesized. Sandwich complexes, in which a metal ion is π-coordinated by two planar aromatic organic rings belong to the foundations of organometallic chemistry. They have been successfully used in a wide variety of applications ranging from catalysis, synthesis and electrochemistry to nanotechnology, materials science and medicine 1,2 . Extending the sandwich structural motif leads to linear multidecker compounds, in which aromatic organic rings and metal atoms are arranged in an alternating fashion. However, the extension to a cyclic multidecker scaffold is unprecedented. Here we show the design, synthesis and characterization of an isomorphous series of circular sandwich compounds, for which the term 'cyclocenes' is suggested. These cyclocenes consist of 18 repeating units, forming almost ideally circular, closed rings in the solid state, that can be described by the general formula [ cyclo -M II ( μ - η 8 :η 8 -Cot TIPS )] 18 (M = Sr, Sm, Eu; Cot TIPS = 1,4-( i Pr 3 Si) 2 C 8 H 6 2− ). Quantum chemical calculations lead to the conclusion that a unique interplay between the ionic metal-to-ligand bonds, the bulkiness of the ligand system and the energy gain on ring closure, which is crucially influenced by dispersion interactions, facilitate the formation of these cyclic systems. Up to now, only linear one-dimensional multidecker sandwich compounds have been investigated for possible applications such as nanowires 3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10 . This textbook example of cyclic sandwich compounds is expected to open the door for further innovations towards new functional organometallic materials.
