Abstract:Supramolecular assembly of well-defined discrete architectures has been of great interest due to the tunable properties of these structures in functional materials and bio-mimicking. While metal-coordination-driven assembly has been extensively studied, anion-coordination-driven assembly (ACDA) is just emerging for constructing complex supramolecular structures. Herein two A(2n)L(2n) (A = anion, L = ligand; n = 1 or 2) 'aniono'-supramolecular assemblies, i.e. double helicates and the first anion grid, have been constructed based on the coordination between phosphate (PO43-) anion and a bis-tris(urea) ligand. Moreover, the aniono-grid and double helicate motifs can be readily interconverted under ambient conditions by simply changing the counter-cation. These results redefine the power and scope of ACDA, which may represent a new approach in the assembly of well-defined architectures in parallel with the metal coordination-driven assembly of metallo-supramolecules.

Abstract:A new Schiff-base ligand is prepared by a two-step reaction of 3-formylsalicylic acid and (1R, 2R)-diaminocyclohexane in alcoholic solvents. The 1:1 condensation product exists as a zwitterion in the solid state and forms pleated hydrogen-bonded sheets. Metalation of the ligand with divalent iron, nickel, cobalt, and zinc resulted in the formation of double-stranded monohelices with exclusively M-helicity. Each complex has two tridentate ligands, with the carboxylic acid groups remaining uncoordinated. In the crystal lattice, these complexes form extended M-helical strands through intermolecular hydrogen bonding interactions. Metalation of the ligand with copper salts resulted in a distinctly different type of complex, in which the ligand has transformed into a symmetric tetradentate salen ligand with uncoordinated carboxylic acid groups.

Abstract:In this study, a benzoselenadiazole- and pyridine-bifunctionalized hydrogen-bonded arylamide foldamer was synthesized. A co-crystallization experiment with 1,4-diiodotetrafluorobenzene showed that a new type of supramolecular double helices, which were induced by three orthogonal interactions, namely, three-center hydrogen bonding (O⋯H⋯O), I⋯N halogen bonding and Se⋯N chalcogen bonding, have been constructed in the solid state. This work presents a novel instance of multiple non-covalent interactions that work together to construct supramolecular architectures.

Abstract:Beyond the common supramolecular helical polymers in solutions, controlling single-crystal helical self-assembly with precisely defined chirality and architectures has been challenging. Here, we report that simply merging static homochiral amino acids with dynamic chiral disulfides can produce a class of building blocks featuring supramolecular helical single-crystal self-assembly with unusual stereodivergency. Analysis of 20 single-crystal structures of 1,2-dithiolanes gives an atom-precision understanding of the chirality transfer from the molecular to supramolecular level, featuring homochiral and heterochiral helical supramolecular self-assembly in the solid state. The underlying structure-assembly relationship reveals that the synergistic interplay of intermolecular H-bonds and the 1,2-dithiolane ring with adaptive chirality plays a key role in determining the assembly pathway, also involving the effects of residue groups, substituents, molecular stacking, and solvents. The confinement effect in the solid state can stabilize the dynamic stereochemistry of disulfide bonds and selectively result in specific conformers that can minimize the energy of global supramolecular systems. We envision that these results represent a starting point to use dynamic chiral disulfide as a functional entity in supramolecular chemistry and may inspire a new class of supramolecular helical polymers with dynamic functions.

Abstract:A series of new sterically hindered bridged ligand 4,4-methylene-N,N'-bis(phenyl-2-pyridylmethylene)-bis(2,6-dialkylanil)s was efficiently synthesized by the condensation reaction of 4,4'-methylene-bis(2,6-disubstituted aniline) and benzoyl pyridine. They easily coordinated with Ag(I) to form Ag(I) complexes. The structure of complex [Ag2L24][ClO4](2) was determined by the single X-ray crystallographic analysis, and the double-helical asymmetric unit containing two [Ag2L24] moieties was interconnected with the adjacent unit through hydrogen bonds to form a helical supramolecular architecture. Abstract:Herein, we demonstrate the supramolecular assemblies from a bifunctional ligand on Au(111), towards engineering two-dimensional (metal-) organic multilevel nanostructures. The bifunctional ligand employed, including two Br atoms and one carboxylic terminal, offers multiple bonding motifs with different configurations and binding energies. These bonding motifs are highly self-selective and self-recognizable, and thus afford the formation of subunits that contribute to engineering multilevel self-assemblies. Our scanning tunneling microscopy experiments, in combination with the density functional theory calculations, revealed various hydrogen, halogen and alkali-carboxylate bonding motifs dictating the different levels of the assemblies. The multilevel assembly protocol based on a judicious choice of multiple bonding motifs guarantees a deliberate control of surface-confined (metal-) organic nanostructures. Our findings may present new opportunities for the fabrication of complex two-dimensional (metal-) organic nanostructures with potential in applications of functionally diverse nanomaterials.

Abstract:This article reports a pair of novel chiral sandwichlike complexes for the first time. In the two complexes, lanthanide Eu3+ ions and Na+ ions are sandwiched between Schiff base ligands, resulting in a two-dimensional plane. For both of the complexes, the intraplane and interplane interactions are utterly different. The adjacent planes are held together by weak van der Waals forces, while the single plane is formed by covalently bonded intraplane N-Eu-O, O-Eu-O, and O-Na-O atoms. On the basis of this characteristic information derived from their molecular building blocks, we studied three-dimensional morphology which has good agreement with expected lamellar morphology. Furthermore, to examine the chiroptical and stable activities, the CD spectra were investigated in the solution of methanol and five different solid forms.

Abstract:The folding of oligomeric strands is the method that nature has selected to generate ordered assemblies presenting spectacular functions. In the purpose to mimic these biomacro‐molecules and extend their properties and functions, chemists make important efforts to prepare artificial secondary, tertiary, and even quarternary structures based on folded abiotic backbones. A large variety of oligomers and polymers, encoded with chemical informations, were designed, synthesized and characterized, and the establishment of non‐covalent interactions lead to complex and functional supramolecular architectures resulting from a spontaneous self‐assembly process. The association of comple‐mentary molecular strands into double helical structures is a common structural pattern of nucleic acids and proteins, so the synthesis of bio‐inspired double helices has emerged as an important subject. In recent years, a number of synthetic oligo‐mers have been reported to form stable double helices and it was shown that the equilibrium between single and double helices can be controlled via different stimuli like the modification of the solvent or the temperature. This kind of structure presents highly interesting functions, such as molecular recognition within the cavity of double helices, and some other potential applications will emerge in the future.

Abstract:By employing the self‐coordination ligands, hourglass‐shaped nanocages SA and SB are successfully constructed. During the self‐assembly processes of SA and SB, self‐complementary coordinated dimers are preferably formed first. Further, these two complexes could go through hierarchical assemblies both in solution and on solid–liquid interface which produce different morphologies as visualized by transmission electron microscope (TEM) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Three‐dimensional (3D) structures constructed via coordination‐driven self‐assemblies have recently garnered increasing attention due to the challenges in structural design and potential applications. In particular, developing new strategy for the convenient and precise self‐assemblies of 3D supramolecular structures is of utmost interest. Introducing the concept of self‐coordination ligands, herein the design and synthesis of two meta‐modified terpyridyl ligands with selective self‐complementary coordination moiety are reported and their capability to assemble into two hourglass‐shaped nanocages SA and SB is demonstrated. Within these 3D structures, the meta‐modified terpyridyl unit preferably coordinates with itself to serve as concave part. By changing the arm length of the ligands, hexamer (SA) and tetramer (SB) are obtained respectively. In‐depth studies on the assembly mechanism of SA and SB indicate that the dimers could be formed first via self‐complementary coordination and play crucial roles in controlling the final structures. Moreover, both SA and SB can go through hierarchical self‐assemblies in solution as well as on solid–liquid interface, which are characterized by transmission electron microscope (TEM) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). It is further demonstrated that various higher‐order assembly structures can be achieved by tuning the environmental conditions.

Abstract:An efficient and direct method for the syntheses of new double Schiff bases by reactions of two different aldehydes and ammonia have been developed. These reactions have also been extended to obtain some novel types of ferrocene derivatives. Specific catalytic hydrolysis of double Schiff bases by metallic ion through intramolecule axial coordination was ascertained. The ESR characteristic of hydrolytic products in solution is discussed, and some crystal structures of new metal complexes are reported.

Abstract:Homochiral metal-organic macrocyclic complexes are of great significance owing to their chirality and well-defined internal cavities that potentially have the ability to mimic complicated biological processes. Here we report a novel metal/anion-coordination co-driven strategy for the formation of nanoscale supramolecular metallocycles with unique topology, large size, and desired chirality. The enantiomeric Janus-type metallocyclic strips are assembled based on the synergistic coordination of sulfate anions and CoII ions to a bifunctional achiral ligand combining the o-phenylene-(bis)urea anion-chelating and 8-hydroxyquinoline metal-coordinating sites. The inherent chirality arises from two types of helical chiralities (triply twisted Möbius ring and circular helicate), which is observed for the first time for metal-organic complex systems. Notably, spontaneous chiral resolution by conglomerate crystallization into a pair of enantiomers (P- or M-Co9) is realized, which is attributed to the multiple weak intermolecular interactions facilitating the hierarchically helical superstructure.

Abstract:Herein, we have successfully achieved the stereoselective synthesis of two chiral radial [5]catenanes in a single step through the self-assembly of bidentate ligands containing l-alanine residues and binuclear half-sandwich organometallic rhodium(III)/iridium(III) clips. Remarkably, these two chiral radial [5]catenanes exhibit complex stereochemical structures as revealed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The eight binuclear units and eight bidentate ligands in their solid-state structures all exhibit a single planar chirality, and the interlocking between molecular macrocycles exhibits a single co-conformational mechanical helical chirality. This indicates that the introduction of the point chirality in the ligands enables the efficient stereoselective construction of mechanically interlocked molecules. Furthermore, by using ligands containing d-alanine residues, radial [5]catenanes with the opposite planar chirality and opposite co-conformational mechanical helical chirality have also been obtained.

Abstract:In modern coordination chemistry, supramolecular coordination complexes take advantage of ligand design to control the shapes and sizes of such architectures. Here we describe how to utilize starting building blocks and a multifunctional ligand to rationally design and synthesize different types of discrete assemblies. Using a hydroxamate ligand featuring two pair of chelating sites together with half-sandwich iridium and rhodium fragments, we were able to construct a series multinuclear organometallic macrocycles and cages through stepwise coordination-driven self-assembly. Experimental observations, supported by computational work, show that selective coordination modes were ascribed to the significant electronic density differences of the two chelating sites, (O,O') and (N,N'). The results underline the advantages of the discrimination between soft and hard binding sites, and suggest that hydroxamic acids can be used as a versatile class of facile multifunctional scaffold for the construction of novel two-dimensional and three-dimensional architectures.
