Abstract:Beam-String Structures are a typical planar hybrid spatial structures.It has been popularly used in practical roof system of airport terminals,exhibition centers and sports arenas in recent years in China.However it is really a pity that the theoretical and experimental research,the corresponding provisions in current Chinese codes of practice are not keeping steps with the practical engineering.In general shape determination problem including force finding analysis and form finding analysis,the curve shape of the lower cable of Beam-String Structures has not been well investigated.The present paper starts with the discussion of the reference configuration for computational analysis of Beam-String Structures.Emphasis is put on a systematical computational analysis of this kind of structures in practical engineering.A novel strategy for shape determination that can be conducted conveniently in computation or even by hand is put forward.Further work on beam-string structures is suggested.

Abstract:Beam-String Structures and suspen-domes are two typical hybrid spatial structures. Nowadays they are popularly adopted for large-span roof systems such as air terminals, convention & exhibition centers and sports arenas. This paper discusses the shape determination of hybrid spatial structures, and then proposes an efficient numerical algorithm to implement it. On the basis of the general inverse equilibrium matrix of the lower cable-bar system and the dynamic relaxation method, this numerical algorithm is programmed using VC++ 6.0 and validated through some numerical examples. Hopefully the work presented in this paper could benefit the further research work and engineering practice on hybrid spatial structures.

Abstract:It is important for quality inspection to quickly identify the correctness of the installation position of corrugated pipes and rebars on construction site. A point clouds and machine learning-based automated recognition and measurement method was developed for long reinforcement cages with corrugated pipes of concrete beams. A segmentation framework combining radius nearest-neighbor covariance characteristics and a clustering algorithm is proposed to extract information of reinforcement cages and corrugated pipes. Besides, the rebars and corrugated pipes are fitted based on an improved random sample consensus method and Newton iteration circle fitting method, respectively. Experimental results demonstrated that the measurement error of the positions of corrugated pipes was only 1.84%. The measurement accuracy of the stirrup spacing was 98.00%. The proposed method is feasible and accurate for identifying reinforcement cages and corrugated pipes, so that construction control and assurance can be achieved for the large precast concrete components.

Abstract:The 3D reconstruction technology for the rapid measurement and modeling has been used in the automotive, aircraft and other industrial manufacturing sectors because it is capable of solving the accuracy problem. Noncontact measurement technology is extended in the field of industrial construction. However, its application in shipbuilding, renowned for large-size, one-of-a-kind, and high-precision, moves slowly. Necessary improvements both in technology and equipment would have an important impact on its use in the shipbuilding industry, where it is indispensable to obtain 3D models and to collect precise data on complicated steel structures. To acquire efficient noncontact measurement techniques suitable for shipbuilding processes, at least three essential challenges are foreseen to be overcome. The first is the complexity measurement operations demanding professional personnel with special training. The second is the time-consuming measurement processes with multiple steps implying the long occupation of in-house assembly site. The third is the unavailability of quick comparison with the theoretical structure data and to calculate the errors This paper has proposed a noncontact measurement method based on 3D reconstruction technology, followed by preliminary experiments to verify its feasibility. Furthermore, a real-time monitoring system suitable for ship construction, which integrates the rapid measurement, the model construction and the error monitoring, has been presented as well.

Abstract:Shape sensing plays a key role in Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) and has become an excellent methodology for large-scale engineering structures to achieve significant improvement in their safety, reliability, and affordability. The inverse finite element method (iFEM) is an accurate and efficient method for shape sensing to reconstruct the three-dimensional displacements using in situ surface strain data. This study proposes a novel shape sensing method for large deformation monitoring based on strain gradient theory and iFEM method. Initially, the nonlinear displacement fields are described, and Green–Lagrange strain theory is employed to deduce the theoretical section strains, and then the strain–displacement relation is established by using a least-squares variational principle. Next, isogeometric displacement functions and the measured section strain formulations are deduced, and a decoupling method for high order section strains is proposed. Finally, a cantilever beam is used to demonstrate the accuracy and effectiveness of the refined isogeometric iFEM method for large deformations. The numerical results show the superior reconstruction capability and potential applicability of the proposed model for accurate shape prediction of the non-linear deformation of beam structure.

Abstract:Geometric modeling is a pivotal step in creating a digital twin for existing bridge structures. Its deficiency of automation makes geometric modeling step time-consuming and laborious. This paper presents a solution for automatically modeling box girder bridges, including external and internal structures, based on laser-scanned point cloud. The solution includes three vital methods: component segmentation, key points extraction of cross-section, and internal structure reconstruction. The results indicate that the established segmentation model, BCR-Net, exhibited better performance than PointNet++ in component segmentation, as demonstrated by mIoU of 0.9751 on the test set. The mean absolute error on the dimension of the pier, bent cap and external and internal structure of the box girder is 0.27 %, 0.38 %, 0.47 %, and 0.48 %, respectively. It means the proposed methods possessed excellent modeling accuracy while ensuring high efficiency than manual modeling, providing a promising solution for digital twin modeling of bridge structures.

Abstract:Full-field displacement reconstruction, which uses a few strain sensors for obtaining real-time surface strain as the input data of the monitoring system, is a crucial technology to actuate and control smart structures. In the previous reconstruction algorithm, the displacement vectors consistent with some particular kinematic assumptions of the deformation theory should be determined in advance. However, obtaining the displacement vectors of complex structures accurately and quickly is difficult in engineering. Therefore, the attentions are mainly on seeking a unified method to avoid the reconstruction errors caused by structural misidentification. For this purpose, some particular generalized quantities are adopted to replace the traditional displacement functions, and the unified displacement field of beam-like structures is proposed based on the homogenized theory. Meanwhile, the reconstruction function is established based on the classic inverse finite-element method (iFEM). Next, the transformation relationships are determined between the generalized numerical strains and the measured strains using a tailored strain measurement scheme. Finally, several beam-like structures with different slenderness ratios are used as the test examples to verify the reliability and effectiveness of the presented full-field displacement monitoring method. The simulation and experimental results demonstrate the superior precision and stable reliability of the presented measurement method for performing shape sensing of beam-like structures.

Abstract:The geometrically nonlinear deformation of the large scale structure seriously endangers the structural system safety. Thus, it is of great significance to real-time monitor the structural deformation in service. However, the current inverse finite element method (iFEM), which is presented based on the linear elastic theory, is not suitable for nonlinear deformation. This paper proposes a nonlinear iFEM for establishing the shape sensing model. Initially, the kinematics and kinetics of the strain-gradient Timoshenko beam model are presented, and the governing equations for geometrically nonlinear behavior are formulated. Then, the analytical solution of the rotation function is presented and the nonlinear shape sensing model is established. Therewith, isogeometric analysis (IGA) approach is employed to construct the interpolation shape functions. Due to displacement functions expressed in terms of rotations, the "shear locking" problem can be effectively avoided. Subsequently, the experimental rotation functions are deduced using discrete surface strain measurements and the rotation transformation is established between Cartesian and curvilinear coordinate systems. Finally, a cantilevered beam is used as a case study to compare the reconstructed with theoretical displacements. The numerical results demonstrate the excellent performance of the proposed formulation, where the reconstructed errors are less than 2.5% for both concentrated and distributed loads.

Abstract:Deflection is of great significance for evaluating the safety performance of long-span bridges, while it is difficult or expensive to be directly measured in actual projects despite numerous displacement sensors have been developed. This paper proposes a displacement reconstruction framework to obtain the dynamic deflection of beam structures using strain data. The framework defines the judgment criteria of curvature symbols and standard side first, and then stochastic subspace identification algorithm is used to calculate the strain mode shapes involved in the vibration, which solves the unclear calculation process and the need for considerable measurement points of the traditional mode superposition method. Furthermore, the displacement mode shapes and corresponding modal coordinates are obtained, and then the dynamic deflections are derived. Numerical simulations of cantilever and simply supported beams illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed framework, and the results show that the error is only 0.69% with only four strain measurement points. The two corresponding model experiments have also been carried out, and the results demonstrate that the deflection estimation error is only 0.14% with five measurement points, which further proves that the developed displacement reconstruction framework can accurately reconstruct the dynamic deflection of the beam structures.

An Overall Deformation Monitoring Method of Structure Based on Tracking Deformation Contour

Abstract:In structural deformation monitoring, traditional methods are mainly based on the deformation data measured at several individual points. As a result, only the discrete deformation, not the overall one, can be obtained, which hinders the researcher from a better and all-round understanding on the structural behavior. At the same time, the surrounding area around the measuring structure is usually complicated, which notably escalates the difficulty in accessing the deformation data. In dealing with the said issues, a digital image-based method is proposed for the overall structural deformation monitoring, utilizing the image perspective transformation and edge detection. Due to the limitation on camera sites, the lens is usually not orthogonal to the measuring structure. As a result, the obtained image cannot be used to extract the deformation data directly. Thus, the perspective transformation algorithm is used to obtain the orthogonal projection image of the test beam under the condition of inclined photography, which enables the direct extraction of deformation data from the original image. Meanwhile, edge detection operators are used to detect the edge of structure’s orthogonal projection image, to further characterize the key feature of structural deformation. Using the operator, the complete deformation data of structural edge are obtained by locating and calibrating the edge pixels. Based on the above, a series of load tests has been carried out using a steel–concrete composite beam to validate the proposed method, with the implementation of traditional dial deformation gauges. It has been found that the extracted edge lines have an obvious sawtooth effect due to the illumination environment. The sawtooth effect makes the extracted edge lines slightly fluctuate around the actual contour of the structure. On this end, the fitting method is applied to minimize the fluctuation and obtain the linear approximation of the actual deflection curve. The deformation data obtained by the proposed method have been compared with the one measured by the dial meters, indicating that the measurement error of the proposed method is less than 5%. However, since the overall deformation data are continuously measured by the proposed method, it can better reflect the overall deformation of the structure, and moreover the structural health state, when compared with the traditional “point” measurements.

Abstract:The inverse finite element method (iFEM) has been used to achieve the shape sensing of small displacements based on linear elastic theory. However, with the development of smart structure technology, the formulation is not suitable for the anisotropic composite structures with large deformation in practical engineering. Therefore, a nonlinear iFEM algorithm is proposed to monitor the linear and nonlinear deformation of the anisotropic composite beams. The formulation not only involves the effect of orientation of composite fibers on strain distribution into the shape sensing model, but also accounts for the effect of shear deformation without any requirement of shear correction factor. Initially, the third-order shear deformation theory (TSDT) is reviewed along with deriving the nonlinear strain field based on von-Karman strain theory. Considering the problem that the couple term of the shear strain and bending strain is unmeasurable, the relationship between shear and bending displacements is established according to the derived constitutive equations. Then, the proposed nonlinear iFEM method reconstructs the deformed structural shape, where isogeometric analysis (IGA) approach is used to construct the displacement functions and the experimental section strains are calculated from the discretized surface strains. Finally, several examples are solved to verify the proposed methodology. Numerical results demonstrate that the nonlinear iFEM algorithm can improve the reconstruction accuracy by 4% with respect to the linear iFEM method for beam structures. Hence, the proposed approach can be used as a viable tool to predict nonlinear deformation of composite structure.

Abstract:In large-span grid structures with thousands of members involved, bending deformation of members is one of the most commonly observed damages affecting the normal service, even the safety of structures. Traditional testing and monitoring methods show weakness in the accurate judgment of crooked members and precision of deformation measurements. In this paper, a new deformation inspection and monitoring method of grid structures using image-based 3D reconstruction is proposed, wherein a new method is put forward to automatically recognize and extract the shape deformation of the structural member for the first time. First, the key area with multiple members is modeled as a three-dimensional mesh model using image-based 3D reconstruction. Then, a new automated recognition and extraction algorithm of shape deformation (AREAS) is carried out, and crooked members, together with their deformed shapes, are extracted from the mesh model through AREAS. In this study, a load experiment of a quadrangular pyramid grid structure containing artificial crooked members and speckled members is designed to compare the deformation measurements using image-based 3D reconstruction with those using laser scanning. The comparison of deformation and deformation increment shows an average error within 1 mm for image-based 3D reconstruction, which validates the proposed method in on-site inspection and monitoring.

Abstract:Asa convenient and effective tool for monitoring of the structural behaviors of civil infrastructure, the machine vision-based sensing technology integrated with digital image processing algorithm has achieved great progress in the field of structural health monitoring (SHM). The prominent advantages of this kind of measurement technology mainly include non-contact, long-distance and high-resolution. Up to now, various types of vision-based systems have been developed and applied in structural performance monitoring of engineering structures, however, seldom investigations are relevant to monitoring of structural dynamic characteristics. In this paper, the method for multi-point synchronous measurement of structural dynamic displacement is proposed. The structural modal parameters are identified using measured multi-point dynamic displacements and fast Fourier transform. A simple-supported rectangle steel beam model is established for conducting experiments to investigate (i) comparison study on the measurement results obtained by the vision-based system and the accelerometer, (ii) the effect of the measurement distance on the accuracy of the vision-based system, and (iii) the feasibility of different types of targets (LED lamp and black spot). The experimental results show that the proposed vision-based method is effective, accurate and stable for structural dynamic response monitoring and modal parameter identification.
Deformation Monitoring and Shape Reconstruction of Flexible Planer Structures Based on FBG

Abstract:To reduce the dependence of real-time deformation monitoring and shape reconstruction of flexible planar structures on experience, mathematical models, specific structural curvature (shape) sensors, etc., we propose a reconstruction approach based on FBG and a data-driven model; with the aid of ANSYS finite element software, a simulation model was built, and training samples were collected. After the machine learning training, the mapping relationship was established, which is between the strain and the deformation variables (in three directions of the x-, y-, z-axis) of each point of the surface of the flexible planar structure. Four data-driven models were constructed (linear regression, regression tree, integrated tree, and BP neural network) and comprehensively evaluated; the predictive value of the BP neural network was closer to the true value (R2 = 0.9091/0.9979/0.9964). Finally, the replication experiment on the flexible planar structure specimen showed that the maximum predictive error in the x-, y-, and z-axis coordinates were 2.93%, 35.59%, and 16.21%, respectively. The predictive results are highly consistent with the expected results of flexible planar structure deformation monitoring and shape reconstruction in the existing test environment. The method provides a new high-precision method for the real-time monitoring and shape reconstruction of flexible planar structures.

High-Precision Monitoring Method for Bridge Deformation Measurement and Error analysis Based on Terrestrial Laser Scanning

Abstract:In bridge structure monitoring and evaluation, deformation data serve as a crucial basis for assessing structural conditions. Different from discrete monitoring points, spatially continuous deformation modes provide a comprehensive understanding of deformation and potential information. Terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) is a three-dimensional deformation monitoring technique that has gained wide attention in recent years, demonstrating its potential in capturing structural deformation models. In this study, a TLS-based bridge deformation mode monitoring method is proposed, and a deformation mode calculation method combining sliding windows and surface fitting is developed, which is called the SWSF method for short. On the basis of the general characteristics of bridge structures, a deformation error model is established for the SWSF method, with a detailed quantitative analysis of each error component. The analysis results show that the deformation monitoring error of the SWSF method consists of four parts, which are related to the selection of the fitting function, the density of point clouds, the noise of point clouds, and the registration accuracy of point clouds. The error caused by point cloud noise is the main error component. Under the condition that the noise level of point clouds is determined, the calculation error of the SWSF method can be significantly reduced by increasing the number of points of point clouds in the sliding window. Then, deformation testing experiments were conducted under different measurement distances, proving that the proposed SWSF method can achieve a deformation monitoring accuracy of up to 0.1 mm. Finally, the proposed deformation mode monitoring method based on TLS and SWSF was tested on a railway bridge with a span of 65 m. The test results showed that in comparison with the commonly used total station method, the proposed method does not require any preset reflective markers, thereby improving the deformation monitoring accuracy from millimeter level to submillimeter level and transforming the discrete measurement point data form into spatially continuous deformation modes. Overall, this study introduces a new method for accurate deformation monitoring of bridges, demonstrating the significant potential for its application in health monitoring and damage diagnosis of bridge structures.

Abstract:<p>Structural deformation is in general an effective indicator of unforeseen damage accumulation. It is difficult to monitor deformation distribution by traditional single point measurement methods. Based on a high strain sensing resolution technique of optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR), this paper presents a hybrid method for structural deformation measurement. The main advantage is the explicit relationship between structural deformation and monitored strain data thus the calculation process can be conducted free from load identification and stiffness measurement. The accuracy of this method is investigated via both theoretical and experimental study. In lab experiments, simple support beam with fix supports and spring supports was designed. Compared with classical double integration method, the accuracy of the conjugated beam method (CBM) improved 5%. In concentrated and uniform distributed load conditions, the average relative error ranges from 4% to 7%. Furthermore, the average relative errors for several points are no more than 3% in complex load conditions.</p>

Abstract:Controlling welding deformation is a very important factor for high quality cranes.Therefore,it is necessary to predict deformation precisely for those huge structures.In this paper an analytical method is proposed,which can be used to predict the deformation of the T-shape structure of the main beam caused by fitting and welding.3-D FEA models were also made to simulate the same processing.By comparing the results of the deformation prediction,good agreements were showed while the calculation time differs hundreds of times.For such structures,it is easy to see that the convenient forum could be used more widely.

Abstract:This work presents a methodology for the real-time structural deformation reconstruction of solid or thin-walled prismatic beams using discrete strains. Based on the 1D inverse Finite Element Method (iFEM), the approach combines the beam kinematics of Timoshenko theory, strain–displacement relations, and the finite element discretisation framework to reconstruct the full-field deformations of beams with any general cross-section. Although applicable for any general class of beams, the present work investigates its experimental application specifically to conventionally and additively manufactured thin-walled beams discretised using various low- and high-order inverse beam elements. The results demonstrate the method's accuracy and robustness, albeit influenced by the element discretisation scheme and the number of strain sensors used.

Abstract:As fundamental load-bearing parts, the cylindrical steel structures of transmission towers relate to the stability of the main structures in terms of topological relation and performance. Therefore, the periodic monitoring of a cylindrical steel structure is necessary to maintain the safety and stability of existing structures in energy transmission. Most studies on deformation analysis are still focused on the process of identifying discrepancies in the state of a structure by observing it at different times, yet relative deformation analysis based on the data acquired in single time has not been investigated effectively. In this study, the piecewise cylinder fitting method is presented to fit the point clouds collected at a single time to compute the relative inclination of a cylindrical steel structure. The standard deviation is adopted as a measure to evaluate the degree of structure deformation. Meanwhile, the inclination rate of each section is compared with the conventional method on the basis of the piecewise cylinder fitting parameters. The validity and accuracy of the algorithm are verified by real transmission tower point cloud data. Experimental results show that the piecewise cylinder fitting algorithm proposed in this research can meet the accuracy requirements of cylindrical steel structure deformation analysis and has high application value in the field of structure deformation monitoring.

Abstract:A learning-based 3D reconstruction method for long-span bridges is proposed in this paper. 3D reconstruction generates a 3D computer model of a real object or scene from images, it involves many stages and open problems. Existing point-based methods focus on generating 3D point clouds and their reconstructed polygonal mesh or fitting-based geometrical models in urban scenes civil structures reconstruction within Manhattan world constrains and have made great achievements. Difficulties arise when an attempt is made to transfer these systems to structures with complex topology and part relations like steel trusses and long-span bridges, this could be attributed to point clouds are often unevenly distributed with noise and suffer from occlusions and incompletion, recovering a satisfactory 3D model from these highly unstructured point clouds in a bottom-up pattern while preserving the geometrical and topological properties makes enormous challenge to existing algorithms. Considering the prior human knowledge that these structures are in conformity to regular spatial layouts in terms of components, a learning-based topology-aware 3D reconstruction method which can obtain high-level structural graph layouts and low-level 3D shapes from images is proposed in this paper. We demonstrate the feasibility of this method by testing on two real long-span steel truss cable-stayed bridges.
