Abstract:In the crystal structure of the title compound, [Pb2(C4H5NO4)2(C6H6N4S2)2]·4H2O, the dinuclear PbII complex molecule is centrosymmetric. The Pb atom is chelated by a tridentate iminodiacetate anion (IDA) and a diaminobithiazole (DABT) ligand, while a carboxylate O atom from an adjacent IDA anion further bridges the Pb atom with a longer Pb—O bond [2.892 (3) Å]. The lone-pair electrons of the Pb atom occupy an axial site in the Ψ-pentagonal-bipyramidal coordination polyhedron. The IDA anion displays a facial configuration: its chelating five-membered rings assume an envelope configuration. Within the DABT ligand, the two thiazole rings are twisted relative to each other, making a dihedral angle of 9.51 (17)°. Extensive N—H...O, O—H...O and weak C—H...O hydrogen bonding helps to stabilize the crystal structure.

Abstract:We have performed in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction and first-principles calculations to explore the compression behavior of barium hexaboride (BaB6) under high pressure. No phase transitions in our experiment are observed up to 49.3 GPa at ambient temperature. It is found that the ambient cage structure (Pm (3) over barm) is still stable with a basic covalent network during the experimental pressure run. The results of our theoretical calculations show that the ambient structure might transform into three dynamically stable structures (Cmmm, Cmcm and I4/mmm) at 78 GPa, 97 GPa and 105 GPa respectively. The energy band calculations indicate that the sample is still a semiconductor with a narrow gap at 50 GPa.

Abstract:Investigations of a substitutional mechanism of Pb incorporation into the crystal structure of Ba6−3xNd8+2xTi18O54 performed by x-ray diffraction analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive and wavelength dispersive x-ray spectroscopy revealed that Pb2+ substitutes for Ba2+ according to the formula (Ba1−zPbz)6−3xNd8+2xTi18O54. The solid solubility limit for 0.5 = x = 0.6 compositions was determined to be at 0.35 ≤ z < 0.4 (nominal composition) which, according to measurements of PbO loss occurring during the heat treatment, gives 0.30 ≤ z < 0.35 (analyses of matrix phase). Increasing the Pb2+ concentration in (Ba1−zPbz)4.5Nd9Ti18O54, results in tf decreasing from an initial positive value (80 ppm/K) to a negative value at the solid solubility limit (−25 ppm/K at z = 0.35). In the same concentration range the Q-value decreases from an initial 2000 to 1250 (z. = 0.35), measured at 4 GHz, while permittivity remains almost constant (k = 87 ± 1.5). After exceeding the solid solubility limit of Pb2+ in (Ba1−zPbz)4.5Nd9Ti18O54 the appearance of secondary phases (Nd4Ti9O24 and Pb-rich phase at grain boundaries) changes the trends of the microwave dielectric properties; permittivity decreases, Q-value remains almost constant, and Tf increases.
INFLUENCE OF Pb SUBSTITUTIONAND I INSERTION LAYER ON STRUCTURE AND PROPERTIES IN Bi2Sr2Co2O8 SYSTEM

Abstract:Since the discovery of superconductivity in Na x Co 2O 4+ y H 2O compound in March, much attention had been focused on the cobalt compounds that contain hexangular CoO 2 layers. In this paper, the polycrystalline samples of Bi 2- x Pb x Sr 2Co 2O 8 ( x =0, 0.1, 0.2 , 0.3, 0.4, 0.5 and 0.6) were synthesized. And iodine was successfully inserted between Bi-O layers in these samples. It was found that their c axis length increased from 1.49nm to 1.87nm. The studies on their structure, transport properties and magnetic properties were systematically carried out. A spin-glass transition at about 4K was observed in all the Pb-doped samples. With the insertion of iodine between Bi-O layers, the sample turns into a semiconductor instead of a superconductor, and also shows the spin-glass behavior at low temperature. The effects of Pb partial substitution and I insertion were discussed in detail.

Abstract:With the aid of transmission electron microscopy, the phenomenon of additional superstructure along [Formula: see text] direction was observed for a sample of Bi 1.7 Pb 0.3Sr2 Ca 1.8 Ba 0.2 Cu 3 O y, and two kinds of modulation mode along b axis was found to coexist in this sample. The images of SEM showed that the addition of Ba ions improved the property of two-dimensional growth. The results of XRD indicated that the substitution of Ba 2+ for Ca 2+ increased the volume fraction of the high-Tc phase (Tc>100 K). From the initial part of dc magnetization curve, it is estimated that about 36 percent of the sample volume is in the 110 K superconducting phase at 77 K. Its frozen magnetic flux density is about 8.6 G, which is 5–6 G higher than that of general Pb-doped sample, and its zero-resistance temperature can reach as high as 111 K. These changes of physical properties may be related to the adjustment of the microstructure.

Abstract:Ba5In0.93Mn4O14.40 was synthesized in air at 1300 degrees C by traditional solid state reaction and structurally characterized using powder X-ray diffraction, neutron diffraction, and selected area electron diffraction (SAED). It crystallizes in the hexagonal space group P6(3)/MMC with a = 5.7389(1) angstrom and c = 23.6418(1) angstrom and was formed by pseudoclose-packed BaO3-x layers in a sequence of (cchhh)(2) with In and Mn cations occupying the oxygen octahedral holes.

Abstract:A new recoverable form of PbCO3 has been synthesized at a pressure of 10.8 GPa and at temperatures higher than 735 K with a trigonal structure (a = 5.20727(14) Å and c = 8.4326(3) Å in a hexagonal setting at 1 bar and room temperature). This new structure of PbCO3, which has been derived from in situ diffraction data and then confirmed and refined using DFT calculations, is of the BaCO3-(hR5)-type, also known for BaCO3 at 1 bar and high temperatures. Data collected during its coexistence with aragonite-type PbCO3 indicate an increase of density of 4.8% at the transition. Our observations of the transformation are compatible with the transformation in the 6–10 GPa range to the field labeled PbCO3-III in previous studies of the phase diagram. DFT calculations have been employed to understand the Raman signature of this phase and predict its properties, such as its nonlinear optical effect. The latter was then experimentally studied, and here, we show that PbCO3-(hR5) is a chemically simple carbonate with very strong SHG effect.

Abstract:In classical ferroelectric BaTiO3, inclusion of Pb at A-site, forms a unique system in terms of improvement in the physical properties and for investigation of several interesting aspects associated with the physical chemistry and materials science. Manipulation of ferroelectric instability with high tetragonality arises due to Pb-O bond which exhibits strong covalent nature along with the presence of the stereochemically active lone pair of Pb (i.e. 6s2). In contrast, Ba-O chemical bond is ionic in nature. In the present work, Pb is progressively substituted with Ba, to observe the intrinsic effects on the physical properties such as tetragonality, phase transition temperature, vibrational modes, piezoelectric coefficient, ferroelectric domain configuration etc. Phase transition temperature significantly increases with substitution of Pb, which is a manifestation of the effect of chemical bond modification. Sintering temperature effects both intrinsic as well as extrinsic contributions to the physical properties of the system.

Abstract:A new phase of the compound PbBiBO4 has been successfully synthesized via the standard solid-state reaction, and the crystal structure has been determined from X-ray monocrystal diffraction data. It crystallizes in orthorhombic space group Cmca (No. 64) with lattice constants a=10.782(3)Å, b=10.502(3)Å, c=7.477(2)Å, Z=8. The crystal structure is characterized by a three-dimensional structure consisting of BiO6 octahedra, PbO4 tetrahedra and BO3 triangles. The BiO6 octahedra compose the layers through the O(2) atoms and O(3) atoms along the [101] direction, which connects the BO3 trigonal groups by sharing the O(3) and two O(1) atoms and links the PbO4 tetrahedra through the O(2) atoms. The UV–Vis–NIR Diffuse-Reflectance spectrum shows that the ultraviolet cutoff edge for the PbBiBO4 crystal is about 310nm. Functional groups in the sample were identified by Infrared spectrum.

Abstract:A novel sodium lead pentaborate, NaPbB5O9, has been successfully synthesized by standard solid-state reaction. The single-crystal X-ray structural analysis showed that NaPbB5O9 crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/c with a=6.5324(10) Å, b=13.0234(2) Å, c=8.5838(10) Å, β=104.971(10)°, and Z=4. The crystal structure is composed of double ring [B5O9]3− units, [PbO7] and [NaO7] polyhedra. [B5O9]3− groups connect with each other forming two-dimensional infinite ∞[B5O9]3− layers, while [PbO7] and [NaO7] polyhedra are located between the layers. [PbO7] polyhedra linked together via corner-sharing O atom forming novel infinite ∞[PbO6] chains along the c axis. The thermal behavior, IR spectrum and the optical diffuse reflectance spectrum of NaPbB5O9 were reported.

Abstract:Two new polymorphs of BiB3O6 were identified at low temperatures using boric acid as a flux. Unlike alpha-BiB3O6, which crystallizes in a noncentrosymmetric space group and, thus, shows exceptional nonlinear optical (NLO) properties, beta-BiB3O6 (I) and gamma-BiB3O6 (II) crystallize in the centrosymmetric space group P2(1)/n with the following lattice parameters: a = 14.1664(1), b = 6.7514(1), c = 4.4290(1) angstroms, beta = 102.125(1) degrees for I; and a = 8.4992(1), b = 11.7093(1), c = 4.2596(1) angstroms, beta = 121.141(1) degrees for II. However, from the structural point of view, the three polymorphs of BiB3O6 are closely related. The structure of beta-BiB3O6 (I) contains a 2-dimensional borate layer, which could be considered to be an intralayered additive product of alpha-BiB3O6. On the other hand, the 3-dimensional borate framework in gamma-BiB3O6 (II) could be considered to be an interlayered additive product of beta-BiB3O6 (I). According to the synthesis experiments and calculated density, it is proposed that compounds I and II should be the low-temperature (high-pressure) polymorphs of BiB3O6.

Abstract:Evolution of crystal structure in Pb1‐xBax(Fe1/2Nb1/2)O3 ceramics has been investigated by X‐ray diffraction and Raman spectra analysis together with the dielectric characterization. The crystal structure for all compositions is cubic and the cell volume indicates a sudden change at x = 0.075. Pb1‐xBax(Fe1/2Nb1/2)O3 ceramics with x > 0.075 are paraelectric, whereas those for x < 0.075 are ferroelectric at room temperature. The evolution of phonon modes indicates that the ferroelectricity of Pb1‐xBax(Fe1/2Nb1/2)O3 solid solution ceramics is caused by the off‐center Nb5+ in BO6 octahedron. The ferroelectric‐related distortion is still observed in paraelectric solid solutions with x > 0.075.

Abstract:Using a combination of high-resolution and high-sensitivity neutron and x-ray diffraction measurements, it is shown that BaPb${}_{1\ensuremath{-}x}$Bi${}_{x}$O${}_{3}$ is dimorphic for the critical superconducting composition regime of $x$ between 0.2 and 0.3. The system is not chemically phase separated; the simultaneous existence of tetragonal and orthorhombic polymorphs of the same composition is demonstrated. The polymorphs differ fundamentally in the distortion and tilting of the octahedra, such that they cannot be obtained from each other via a second-order phase transition. It is established that the tetragonal symmetry polymorph is the superconducting phase.

Abstract:A series of novel lead free tungsten bronze (T-B) structured Ba 4 (La 2-x Bi x )Fe 2 Nb 8 O 30 (x = 0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.15, 0.2, and 0.25) were formulated by traditional high temperature solid-state method and calcined at 1200 °C. The structural property was investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Tetragonal structure was confirmed from Rietveld analysis. The scanning electron micrograph (SEM) shows uniform distribution of rod-shaped grains with less porosity. The UV–vis analysis shows that the materials have band gaps in the range 2.17–2.29 eV which makes them useful for photocatalytic applications. The dielectric measurement of the samples was carried out in a broad range of frequency as well as temperature. The impedance of the materials falling off with the rise in temperature showing their negative temperature coefficient (NTCR) behavior. The variation of polarization with electric field confirms the ferroelectric nature of the samples.
