Abstract:The novel Pb2Pd superconducting alloy crystallizes in CuAl2-type structure, which can be depicted as infinite stacking of Pb and Pd layer. A series of Bi-doped Pb2-xBixPd (0 <= x <= 0.6) alloys were successfully prepared via conventional solid-state method. We systematically investigated the Bi-doping effect on superconductivity of Pb2Pd alloy by the magnetic susceptibility and resistivity measurements. It is found that superconducting T-c is enhanced when Bi-doping content x = 0.2 and 0.6, while T-c is slightly suppressed when x = 0.4.
INFLUENCE OF Pb SUBSTITUTIONAND I INSERTION LAYER ON STRUCTURE AND PROPERTIES IN Bi2Sr2Co2O8 SYSTEM

Abstract:Since the discovery of superconductivity in Na x Co 2O 4+ y H 2O compound in March, much attention had been focused on the cobalt compounds that contain hexangular CoO 2 layers. In this paper, the polycrystalline samples of Bi 2- x Pb x Sr 2Co 2O 8 ( x =0, 0.1, 0.2 , 0.3, 0.4, 0.5 and 0.6) were synthesized. And iodine was successfully inserted between Bi-O layers in these samples. It was found that their c axis length increased from 1.49nm to 1.87nm. The studies on their structure, transport properties and magnetic properties were systematically carried out. A spin-glass transition at about 4K was observed in all the Pb-doped samples. With the insertion of iodine between Bi-O layers, the sample turns into a semiconductor instead of a superconductor, and also shows the spin-glass behavior at low temperature. The effects of Pb partial substitution and I insertion were discussed in detail.

Abstract:High-quality Bi$_{2-x}$Pb$_{x}$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+\delta}$ (Bi2212) single crystals have been successfully grown by the traveling solvent floating zone technique with a wide range of Pb substitution ($x=0-0.8$). The samples are characterized by transmission electron microscope (TEM) and measured by high resolution laser-based angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) with different photon energies. A systematic evolution of the electronic structure and superstructure with Pb substitution has been revealed for the first time. The superstructure shows a significant change with Pb substitution and the incommensurate modulation vector ($\textbf{Q}$) decreases with increasing Pb substitution. In the meantime, the superstructure intensity from ARPES measurements also decreases dramatically with increasing Pb concentration. The superstructure in Bi2212 can be effectively suppressed by Pb substitution and it nearly disappears with a Pb substitution of $x=0.8$. We also find that the superstructure bands in ARPES measurements depend sensitively on the photon energy of lasers used; they can become even stronger than the main band when using a laser photon energy of 10.897 eV. These results provide important information on the origin of the incommensurate superstructure and its control and suppression in bismuth-based high temperature superconductors.

Abstract:•Two series of Pb substituted α-Bi1-xPbxPd and β-Bi2-xPbxPd were successfully synthesized by facile solid-state method.•Bi1-xPbxPd (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.2) and Bi2-xPbxPd (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.5) samples show bulk superconductivity and Tc monotonically change as increases of Pb content.•One can see that the cell volume has also shown a monotonous decreasing change with higher Pb content for both alloys, which can be attributed to the slightly smaller atomic radius of Pb (1.75 Å) than Bi (1.82 Å).

Abstract:BiPbSrCaCuO superconductors with various nominal compositions have been studied. T/sub c,zer0/=111 K and an AC Meissner effect of 93.1% have been obtained in a (Bi/sub 0.8/Pb/sub 0.2/)/sub 2/Sr/sub 2/Ca/sub 2/-Cu/sub 3/O/sub x/ sample. The authors have also synthesized a single-phase (Bi/sub 0.8/Pb/sub 0.2/)/sub 2/Sr/sub 2/Ca/sub 2/Cu/sub 3/O/sub x/ sample. The crystal structure of the superconducting phase has been determined by transmission electron microscopy, convergent beam electron diffraction, and powder X-ray diffraction. The crystal structure of the Pb-doped system has a tetragonal unit cell (a=b=3.823 AA, c=37.074 AA), space group I4/MMM. The atomic coordinates have been determined. Unlike the Bi-based system without Pb, the Pb-doped 2223 phase has very weak or no modulation structure, which in turn changes the symmetry from pseudo-tetragonal to tetragonal. The relationship between synthesis conditions and superconductivity is discussed. >

Abstract:Upon annealing Bi1.6Pb0.4Sr2Ca2Cu3Ox compound at 650℃ in flowing oxygen the modulated structure was changed from the Pb-type via the mixed type to the Bi-type. While the specimen was subjected to sequent annealing in flowing nitrogen at 650℃, the modualated structure was changed back from the pure Bi-type via the mixed type to the pure Pb-type. The process was almost reversible. The change in the modulated structure was closely related to the motion of Pb ions. And the inhomogenity of the Pb ion distribution led to the mixed modulated structure.
The Influence of Pb on the Stability of the Bi-type Modulated Structure

Abstract:The mechanism of the Bi-type modulated structure was studied in Bi-based high-temperature superconductors with nominal compositions of Bi2Sr2CaCu2Oy, Bi1.85Pb0.15Sr2CaCu2Oy and Bi1.8Pb0.35Sr2Ca2Cu3O y. It was found that the three samples annealed in oxygen flow showed the presence of Bi-type modulation in electron diffraction patterns; after the samples were annealed in nitrogen atmosphere the Bi-type modulation still existed for the sample Bi2Sr2CaCu2Oy but disappeared completely for the Pb- doped samples Bi1.85Pb0.15Sr2CaCu2Oy and Bi1.8Pb0.35Sr2Ca2Cu3Oy. This suggests that doping Pb in the Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O system strongly changes the stability of the Bi-type modulation. It is confirmed that the driving force of Bi-type modulation is not the consequence of extra oxygen for the charge balance, but the adjustment of the BiO layer to the lattice mismatch.

Abstract:The relationship of the structure and superconductivity in the system Bi,PbCa3Sr3Cu4Oy and Bi4Ca3sr3Cu4Oy is investigated. It is found that both systems belong to the material with 4334 phase identically but they have different superconductivity. The reason causing this difference may be the subtle variation coming from the arragement of atoms, the number and dis-tribution of oxygen deficiency and the feature of electrons within the cell.

Abstract:The effect of Y substitution for Ca on the crystal structure and electronic states of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+y was studied. It is found that the modulation period of the incommensurate superlattice along b axis decreases from 4.7b to about 4.0b gradually, which implies the change of the extra oxygen atoms residing within double Bi-O layers. Two kinds of modulation structures with periods of 4b and 8b exist in the same compound as Ca is completely substituted by Y. XPS was employed to study the change in the electronic structure. The results suggest that the variation of superconductivity is not caused by the slight change in crystal structure, but rather by the hole filling in O2p orbitals in CuO2 layers. For this substituted system, it is still the case where one hole in Cu3d orbital (3d9) is corresponding to the strong correlation antiferromagnetic insulator, and an extra hole in O2p orbital in CuO2 layer (3d9L) to the superconductor.

Abstract:Pb-doped superconductors with x = 0.0 to 0.50 and increment steps of 0.1 have been synthesized. For x = 0.30, the sample has the highest superconducting transition temperature, (the zero-resistance temperature), and (the diamagnetic onset temperature) (results given by Shao H M, Lam C C, Fung P C W, Wu X S, Du J H, Shen G J, Chow J C L, Ho S L, Hung K C and Yao X X 1995 Physica C 246 207). The crystal structures of these solid solutions have been investigated by synchrotron x-ray diffraction (SXRD) and Raman spectroscopy at room temperature. The lattice parameters decrease with the increase of the content of Pb. From SXRD refinements, one of the most significant features of this study is that there are great differences between some of the cation - oxygen bond distances - such as the (Hg/Pb) - O bond distance - of Pb-free and Pb-doped samples. The impurity phases appearing in our samples are and , which are refined together. The content of each phase is determined from the refined scale factor. Raman studies show that the peaks appearing at , and are due to the impurity phase, and four peaks at the frequencies of and are due to the vibrations of oxygen atoms in the superconducting phase. No Raman peak shift is observed when the laser irradiation power is changed.

Abstract:(SrxBa1-x)(4)Sm2Fe2Nb8O30 (x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4) ceramics with tetragonal bronze structure were prepared by the standard solid-state method. With the increase of x, (SrxBa1-x)(4)Sm2Fe2Nb8O30 ceramics transform from ferroelectric to paraelectric. The composition x = 0 shows first-order ferroelectric transition with Tc above room temperature. The other compositions exhibit broad dielectric peaks with frequency dispersion, indicating a relaxor ferroelectric transition. Saturated P-E hysteresis loops and obvious peaks in the charging current-field (J-E) curves are observed at room temperature for x = 0 and 0.1 while paraelectric characteristics are detected for the others. Magnetic hysteresis loops are obtained for all the compositions and the remanent moment increases monotonously from 0.14 emu/g to 1.21 emu/g with the increasing concentration of Sr. All the results are expected to provide valuable guidance for searching new multiferroic tungsten bronze ceramics.(C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:The samples with the norminal compositions of Bi1.8 M0.2 Sr2 Ca2 Cu3 Oy(M = Pb, In, Sb, Nb) and Bi1.7 Pb0.2 M0.1 Sr2 Ca2 Cu3 Oy(M=In, Sb, Nb) have been prepared and investigated. Only the statistical substitution of lead for bismuth results in the formation of the 110K phase. In the crystal structures of two homogeneous phases Bi1.8 Pb0.2 Sr2 Ca2 Cu3 O10 and Bi1.7 Pb0.2 In0.1 Sr2 Ca2 Cu3 O10, adjacent bismuth layers with one oxygen layer in between display a perfect Aurivillius type structure, and the structural unit (O2Cu)Ca(CuO2)Ca(CuO2) shifts teragonality.

Abstract:BixSr1Ca1CuyOz(x, y=1, 2 or 3) high Tc superconductors were synthesized by solid state reaction method. There are two superconducting phases in Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O system: 110 K phase and 80 K phase. The relative portion of the two phases and the state of superconducting connection are closely related to chemical compositions and the conditions of processing. X-ray powder diffraction shows that there exists a main phase with orthorhombic symmetry in the samples of different compositions and conditions of processing. According to X-ray diffraction data, the lattice constants of the main phase in the sample of nominal composition Bi1Sr1Ca1Cu2Oz have been determined as aο=5.44A, bο=5.35A and co=30.66A. Electron diffraction shows complicated modulation structure along b− and c− axes. High resolution image along [001] zone axis indicates the modulation structure along b− axis.
Raman Scattering of Pb- and Fe-substituted BiSrCaCuO Superconductors

Abstract:Raman spectra of the superconducting BiSrCaCuO oxide with Pb and Fe substitutions are examined. All the Raman modes are assigned by group theory analysis which indicates that they belong to Ag mode where the comparison between them and those from the single crystals of Bi-system were made. The Pb substitution increases the frequency of Bi vibration, whereas none of the frequency shift is obtained from Fe doping. Temperature-dependent measurements of 640 and 658 cm-1 lines show that there are some anomalies near 150 K which may be related to phase transition. The Raman data are compared with those in undoped Bi-system, in YBaCuO and in Tl-system.

Abstract:As new family of superconductors with a layered structure, BiS2-based materials have attracted much interest. Eu3Bi2S4F4 is a newly discovered member which shows superconductivity at 1.5 K without extrinsic doping, however, superconductivity is strongly suppressed by Sr-doping. In this contribution, we present, in terms of local atomic displacement, an insight into the relationship between Sr-doping and the suppression of superconductivity in Eu3-xSrxBi2S4F4 by Bi and Eu L-3-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy. Upon Sr-doping, the distance between Eu3F4 blocking layers and BiS2 layers is significantly elongated, accompanied by the breaking of Eu-S-Bi channel, which makes it more difficult to transfer electrons into BiS2 layers. Moreover, distortions in the Bi-S-1 plane increase with Sr content, reducing the overlap among Bi(6p(x)/6p(y))-S(3p) orbitals within the superconducting plane. The decoupling between blocking and BiS2 layers, as well as the distortions in the superconducting Bi-S-1 plane, may contribute to the suppression of superconductivity in Sr-doped Eu3Bi2S4F4 compounds. Abstract:Magnetoelectric effect is directly measured in the Ba4(SmxLa1-x)2Fe2Nb8O30 ceramics, which is rarely reported in tungsten bronze ceramics. Besides, the effects of Sm-substitution on the crystal structure, dielectric, ferroelectric and magnetic properties have been systematically studied. XRD Rietveld refinement confirms all the ceramics to be single phase with space group of P4bm. With the increase of x, Ba4(SmxLa1-x)2Fe2Nb8O30 ceramics transform from paraelectric to ferroelectric. The compositions of x = 0.9, 0.95 and 1 show first-order ferroelectric phase transitions above room temperature. Compared to composition x = 0, the dielectric constant of other compositions exhibits frequency stability and the dielectric loss decreases apparently at room temperature. The ferroelectricity improves with increasing x, which can be ascribed to the increased A2-A1 ionic radius difference. Meanwhile, the magnetic hysteresis loops are obtained for some compositions. All the results approve Ba4(SmxLa1-x)2Fe2Nb8O30 (x = 0.9, 0.95, 1) ceramics as room temperature multiferroic materials with intrinsic magnetoelectric effect.
Effect of Sr and Ca solid-solution behaviour on superconductive properties as determined by microstructure analysis

Abstract:The effects of the Sr and Ca composition and site-selection in a solid solution of a Bi-system superconductor on the superconductive properties were studied. Results showed that the Sr and Ca solid-solution behaviour had a remarkable effect on the superconductive properties. Further analysis indicated that this effect originated from varied hole concentration which was determined by the content of Sr atoms substituting for Bi atoms within the Bi-O layers. This substitution was influenced by thr Sr and Ca solid-solution behaviour. This result offers a new mechanism for clarifying why the bivalent Sr and Ca cations affect the superconductive properties. Influence of Pb Addition on the Structure and Critical Current Density of MOD-YBCO Superconducting Thin Films

Abstract:Pb addition was used to improve the nucleation and growth of YBa<inf>2</inf>Cu<inf>3</inf>O<inf>7-δ</inf> (YBCO) superconducting films fabricated via the metal organic deposition (MOD) process. By adding lead (II) acetate trihydrate, uniform and stable Pb-containing precursor solution could be obtained. And the final YBCO superconducting films were fabricated through the coating and heat treatment steps. The micro-structure and critical current density (J<inf>c</inf>) were characterized, and the influences of Pb addition amount and water pressure were investigated. When the water pressure is low (at dew point of 25 ℃), Pb addition leads to the occurring of pores and nondense areas, hence degrading J<inf>c</inf> of YBCO films. When the water pressure is raised (at dew point of 45 ℃), the YBCO films fabricated using Pb addition are densified, and the a/b-axis orientated YBCO grians could be suppressed. J<inf>c</inf> of YBCO films is optimal when the amount of Pb addition is 1.1wt%, which is 3.7 MA/cm2 (self-field, 77 K, 370 nm thick). ©, 2015, Chinese Ceramic Society. All right reserved.
Effect of Lead Substitution on LaO0.5F0.5BiS2

Abstract:We examined Lead (Pb) Substitution effect on a single crystal of a layered superconductor LaO0.5F0.5BiS2. Pb concentration dependence of the lattice constant showed slight anomaly at about 8% and 9% substitution of Pb for Bi. These samples showed the enhancement of the superconducting transition temperature and the superconducting volume fraction. Furthermore, these samples showed the anomaly in the temperature dependence of the resistivity at about 150K. These results were not observed in Pb substituted NdO0.7F0.3BiS2. Therefore, the enhancement of the superconducting properties by Pb substitution is related to the structural instability for the pale perturbation in LaO0.5F0.5BiS2.

Abstract:The elaborated and well characterized Bi1.7Pb0.3Sr2Ca2Cu3Ox samples, as-prepared and annealed in different conditions, were studied by temperature dependent X-ray diffraction from liquid nitrogen temperature to melting point, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, carrier concentration, and superconductivity measurements. Two changes of thermal expansion coefficient along the c direction in low temperature range and two thermal instabilities in high temperature range are observed, which suggests that the structure changes in this system is asssociated with two different blocks, i.e., perovskite and rock-salt blocks, of the unit cell. The changes in structure and in electronic properties related to these blocks are also observed. It is found that there is a close correlation among the mismatch between the two different blocks, value of Tc, oxygen content, and thermal expansion coefficient, and a roughly quantitative relationship is also obtained. The experimental results suppose that the interaction between different layers especially two different blocks, is of importance to understand the superconductivity in oxide superconductors.scholar in Department of Physics, Peking University.
