Abstract:The domestic rainwater harvesting system (DRHS) is an important freshwater source for Zhoushan, China to meet water demands. A computer model has been generated to analyze the performance of the DRHS with different ratios of D/(AR) (water demand/average annual collected runoff) and S/(AR) (storage capacity/average annual collected runoff). The performance of the DRHS was analyzed by means of the model simulation, which is described by its water shortage rate (WSR) and water loss rate (WLR). Using the data, a set of dimensionless design calculation chart is introduced. When the water demand and requirement of the design are known, the established chart can be used to easily determine the storage capacity and catchment (roof and other surface) area required to achieve a desired performance level.

Abstract:Addressing resilience, sustainability, and water resource conservation has become increasingly important in the modern world. Challenges arise due to periodic droughts, climate change, and seasonal variability in areas with limited freshwater availability. Therefore, implementing and promoting water reuse is essential. Rainwater harvesting (RWH) is one such alternative, offering benefits in conserving water resources and mitigating droughts while reducing urban flooding and costs by generating alternative lower-cost water sources. Providing users with knowledge of available volumes for harvesting, including homeowners and governmental entities, is key to encouraging this practice. Hydrological data and geographic information systems are fundamental for managing, designing, and projecting rainwater harvesting practices. However, no tools currently integrate this information at multiple scales with current and future climate scenarios. This research aimed to develop a multi-scale assessment tool named H2O HARVEST, for evaluating the availability and potential of rainwater harvesting. Additional benefits of the H2O HARVEST app include aiding decision-making by national governmental entities and analyzing potential future scenarios for homeowner users. The app also provides regulatory policy information at the state level. We offer an app with the necessary capabilities to bridge the technology gap and promote rainwater harvesting practices. Our research demonstrated that RWH has the potential to be a sustainable water reuse practice. For more than 50% of the states, the RWH could supply at least 50% of the water demand. The regions of the US with the greatest potential are the Central and East.

Abstract:Abstract Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software is used to analyze rainwater harvesting potential in Escambia County, Florida, USA. The approach presented can be replicated using LiDAR data, and the infrared spectrum of National Agriculture Imagery Program (NAIP) imagery. GIS surface maps are analyzed in combination with local utility consumption data to determine potential reductions in potable water consumption for households. The results indicate an extensive urban catchment of rooftop surfaces, and commensurate potential for rainwater harvesting and stormwater attenuation. Sixty two percent of the households analyzed consumed less water than could be potentially harvested. The remaining 38% consumed more water than could be potentially harvested. There are noted and significant differences between the two sample populations, including differences in water consumed and roof size. A comparison of lot size between the two sample populations did not yield any significant difference. The conclusions indicate that the widespread implementation of rainwater harvesting could substantially reduce potable water use in urban areas, and are of use to policy makers, planners, engineers and property owners everywhere.

Abstract:Rain barrels/cisterns are a type of green infrastructure (GI) practice that can help restore urban hydrology. Roof runoff captured and stored by rain barrels/cisterns can serve as a valuable resource for landscape irrigation, which would reduce municipal water usage and decrease runoff that other stormwater infrastructures need to treat. The expected benefits of rainwater harvesting and reuse with rain barrels/cisterns are comprehensive but neither systematically investigated nor well documented. A comprehensive tool is needed to help stakeholders develop efficient strategies to harvest rainwater for landscape irrigation with rain barrels/cisterns. This study further improved the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) in simulating urban drainage networks by coupling the Storm Water Management Model (SWMM)'s closed pipe drainage network (CPDN) simulation methods with the SWAT model that was previously improved for simulating the impacts of rainwater harvesting for landscape irrigation with rain barrels/cisterns. The newly improved SWAT or SWAT-CPDN was applied to simulate the urban hydrology of the Brentwood watershed (Austin, TX) and evaluate the long-term effects of rainwater harvesting for landscape irrigation with rain barrels/cisterns at the field and watershed scales. The results indicated that the SWAT-CPDN could improve the prediction accuracy of urban hydrology with good performance in simulating discharges (15 min, daily, and monthly), evapotranspiration (monthly), and leaf area index (monthly). The impacts of different scenarios of rainwater harvesting and reuse strategies (rain barrel/cistern sizes, percentages of suitable areas with rain barrels/cisterns implemented, auto landscape irrigation rates, and landscape irrigation starting times) on each indicator (runoff depth, discharge volume, peak runoff, peak discharge, combined sewer overflow—CSO, freshwater demand, and plant growth) at the field or watershed scale varied, providing insights for the long-term multi-functional impacts (stormwater management and rainwater harvesting/reuse) of rainwater harvesting for landscape irrigation with rain barrels/cisterns. The varied rankings of scenarios found for achieving each goal at the field or watershed scale indicated that tradeoffs in rainwater harvesting and reuse strategies exist for various goals, and the strategies should be evaluated individually for different goals to optimize the strategies. Efficient rainwater harvesting and reuse strategies at the field or watershed scale can be created by stakeholders with the assist of the SWAT-CPDN to reduce runoff depth, discharge volume, peak runoff, peak discharge, CSO, and freshwater demand, as well as improve plant growth.

Abstract:Low Impact Development (LID) practices provide more sustainable solutions than traditional piping and storm ponds in stormwater management. However, architects are not equipped with the knowledge to perform runoff calculations at early design stage. In response to this dilemma, we have developed an open-source stormwater runoff evaluation and management tool, Rainwater+. It is seamlessly integrated into computer-aided design (CAD) software to receive instant estimate on the stormwater runoff volume of architecture and landscape designs. Designers can thereby develop appropriate rainwater management strategies based on local precipitation data, specific standards, site conditions and economic considerations. We employed Rainwater+ to conduct two case studies illustrating the importance of considering stormwater runoff in the early design stage. The first case study showed that integrating rainwater management into design modeling is critical for determining LID practice at any specific site. The second case study demonstrated the need of visualizing runoff flow direction in assisting the placement of LID practices at proper locations when the terrain is of great complexity.

Abstract:This article presents a framework of an integrated GIS-based water resources information and assessment system and its partial implementation. This tool uses ArcGIS as the platform, and Arc Hydro as a database which will hold basin hydrologic data, reservoir information, water withdrawal and return data, and meteorological data. The tool will integrate a basin water use and assessment screening tool to identify current and future water resources stressed areas, and their extent using various indices. A river basin analysis model is integrated into the system to assess water availability, and its reliability under current and future water consumptive use within sub-basins; and analyze various alternatives to meet current and future water consumptive uses as a planning purpose.
Water Supply and Stormwater Management Benefits of Residential Rainwater Harvesting in U.S. Cities

Abstract:This article presents an analysis of the projected performance of urban residential rainwater harvesting systems in the United States (U.S.). The objectives are to quantify for 23 cities in seven climatic regions (1) water supply provided from rainwater harvested at a residential parcel and (2) stormwater runoff reduction from a residential drainage catchment. Water‐saving efficiency is determined using a water‐balance approach applied at a daily time step for a range of rainwater cistern sizes. The results show that performance is a function of cistern size and climatic pattern. A single rain barrel (190 l [50 gal]) installed at a residential parcel is able to provide approximately 50% water‐saving efficiency for the nonpotable indoor water demand scenario in cities of the East Coast, Southeast, Midwest, and Pacific Northwest, but <30% water‐saving efficiency in cities of the Mountain West, Southwest, and most of California. Stormwater management benefits are quantified using the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Storm Water Management Model. The results indicate that rainwater harvesting can reduce stormwater runoff volume up to 20% in semiarid regions, and less in regions receiving greater rainfall amounts for a long‐term simulation. Overall, the results suggest that U.S. cities and individual residents can benefit from implementing rainwater harvesting as a stormwater control measure and as an alternative source of water.

Abstract:In this study, methods were developed to create and evaluate the performance of the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) in southern Peru where commonly used input data sources were not available. Soil classes were defined based on regional soil taxonomy and suitability maps combined with soil profiles. Local land cover and remotely sensed satellite data were used to develop a land cover database. Water balance analysis of the reservoir as well as satellite evapotranspiration data were used for model performance assessment. Results showed that these strategies provided reliable predictions of hydrology in this region, with the uncertainty quantified based on the range of inputs. Overall, this semiarid watershed was base flow driven and average annual surface runoff contribution to streamflow was less than 9%. Assessment of water pathways and their uncertainties based on the uncertainty of estimated inputs also showed that 62% of precipitation was removed by evapotranspiration with up to 16% uncertainty. The methods introduced in this study can be applied to other data-scarce watersheds, and findings provide insights on the hydrology of the Peruvian Andes region.

Abstract:The article explores the possibility of constructing a system of open urban and regional spaces through rainwater management. This system takes advantage of the existing urban open spaces (mainly parks and squares), and makes them into multifunctional places for absorbing rainwater during rainy days. Normally they are leisure areas for the public. The first part of this article collects geographical and hydrological information. The second part focuses on the hydrological structure, and determines the area of study. In this phase, DEM (Digital Elevation Model) will be used to automatically divide the city by the function of hydrological analysis in a Geographic Information System (GIS). The third part analyses the spatial accessibility (the accessibility of rainwater into the open spaces) of such an integrated system of open spaces and rainwater management. The network analysis in GIS, including descriptive and statistical analysis and the road network based distance measurement, is mainly applied to investigate spatial accessibility. The last part analyses the spatial configuration of the open space system integrated with rainwater management. On the basis of this information and analyses, quantitative constraints for landscape design are acquired, rendering the storage capacity of functional open space. Based on these results, applied to a substantially urbanized region, this article finally discusses the feasibility of the approach presented in this study and its eventual application to similar landscape and urban planning scenarios.

Abstract:This study develops a web-based operational platform to streamline the integration of GIS technologies, hydrological analyses, and regulation inspections in the design process of rainwater retention facilities. The system incorporates a comprehensive design procedure, which entails: (1) selecting the type and size of the retention facility based on predefined options, (2) conducting hydrological analyses specific to the development site, and (3) verifying the design's compliance with relevant regulations. Users can visualize flow hydrographs before and after development, estimate the increase in runoff volume resulting from development, and assess the reduction in peak outflow achieved by the retention facility. The system can also validate the adequacy of the retention facility design in alignment with regional flood control objectives. It offers a user-friendly geographical interface for designing retention facilities and drainageways at development sites. Furthermore, design information displayed on the platform can be conveniently shared with regulatory authorities through a web link.

Abstract:Surface water plays a crucial role in the ecological environment and societal development. Remote sensing detection serves as a significant approach to understand the temporal and spatial change in surface water series (SWS) and to directly construct long-term SWS. Limited by various factors such as cloud, cloud shadow, and problematic satellite sensor monitoring, the existent surface water mapping datasets might be short and incomplete due to losing raw information on certain dates. Improved algorithms are desired to increase the completeness and quality of SWS datasets. The present study proposes an automated framework to detect SWS, based on the Google Earth Engine and Landsat satellite imagery. This framework incorporates implementing a raw image filtering algorithm to increase available images, thereby expanding the completeness. It improves OTSU thresholding by replacing anomaly thresholds with the median value, thus enhancing the accuracy of SWS datasets. Gaps caused by Landsat7 ETM + SLC-off are respired with the random forest algorithm and morphological operations. The results show that this novel framework effectively expands the long-term series of SWS for three surface water bodies with distinct geomorphological patterns. The evaluation of confusion matrices suggests the good performance of extracting surface water, with the overall accuracy ranging from 0.96 to 0.97, and user's accuracy between 0.96 and 0.98, producer's accuracy ranging from 0.83 to 0.89, and Matthews correlation coefficient ranging from 0.87 to 0.9 for several spectral water indices (NDWI, MNDWI, ANNDWI, and AWEI). Compared with the Global Reservoirs Surface Area Dynamics (GRSAD) dataset, our constructed datasets promote greater completeness of SWS datasets by 27.01%–91.89% for the selected water bodies. The proposed framework for detecting SWS shows good potential in enlarging and completing long-term global-scale SWS datasets, capable of supporting assessments of surface-water-related environmental management and disaster prevention.

Abstract:Abstract. The availability of erratic rainfall and high evapotranspiration causes temporal and spatial variability of water thereby causing crop yield reduction and crop failure. The potential of water harvesting (WH) both groundwater as well as surface water to mitigate the spatial and temporal variability of precipitation. One technique for water harvesting (WH) is to collect excess runoff water both rain and snowmelt, store it for agricultural purposes during dry spells. The present work accentuated the expediency of remote sensing (RS) and geographic information system (GIS) applications in water harvesting studies. The resultant water harvesting potential map prepared was thus classified into three WH potential zones namely, high, medium and low covering an area of 32.82, 10320.10, and 7596.18 ha (<1%, 57.49%, and 42.32%) respectively. The groundwater map in the area was also classified as high potential areas covering 1421.69 ha (7.92%), medium potential areas covering 8762.69 ha (48.81%), and low potential areas covering 7764.72 ha (43.25%). The integrated remote sensing (RS), Geographical Information System (GIS), Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT), and analytical hierarchy process (AHP) were found to be efficient methods to recover water and to select suitable water and groundwater harvesting sites in order to ensure better water accessibility to the people for domestic, irrigation and other activities in cold arid regions of northwestern Himalayas. Abstract:The application of information collected by remote sensing satellites to urban related problems has developed at a fast pace during the last few years as a result of the availability of commercial satellites proving high spatial resolution data. These systems obtain image data with 4- m and 1m spatial resolutions that are one order of magnitude better than what was available until recently. These data can be processed automatically to yield information related to locations of interest (site-specific information), information about the surrounding areas (neighborhood information), and can be combined with other types of information such as census data (contextual information) to provide insight into current population distribution characteristics and the potential environmental impact of alternative urban development scenarios. This study was carried out within the City of Columbia, Missouri to assess the ability of using satellite remote sensing data and a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to characterize and analyze community development and population distribution to inform decisions regarding the implementation of the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Phase II storm water requirements. The study utilized the multispectral data collected by the Ikonos satellite with 4 m spatial resolution to produce a land cover map for the city. The land cover information was the starting point to identify land use in the urban setting and to evaluate the potential impact of storm water runoff that might carry different types and amounts of pollutants from the land surface to streams.

Based on the basic principles of water-saving irrigation, and using the method of Modified Penman Monteith and water balance equation, The system of irrigation management and decision support based on WEBGIS was developed, which is according to the soil moisture, crop growth status, meteorology change and the physiological and ecological index of crop that is monitored, and the situation of water supply and crop water-saving irrigation system were also combined with the system. With the help of the GIS, the system under discussion can predict the water requirement of the irrigation district so as to optimize the allocation of the water resources, to provide a decision support for irrigation managers, and to finally realize desirable irrigation practice. Besides, it will promote the automation, informationization, and intelligent of the irrigation district management.

Abstract:Water harvesting is predominantly carried out in arid and semi-arid regions. Site selection studies often rely on a methodology that calculates runoff using curve numbers to generate runoff maps. These maps, typically used as part of a multi-criteria selection process, identify areas conducive to the siting of water harvesting structures. However, traditional runoff maps do not account for transmission losses that occur along the surface flow path to the catchment outlet, and these losses can be significant in arid and semi-arid regions. Here we introduce a methodology that incorporates a curve number runoff method while also addressing transmission losses. Our approach, utilising three global datasets, was validated against observed runoff data from 28 catchments worldwide, and infers hydraulic characteristics of both overland and channel flow from curve number values. This involves leveraging the curve number dataset twice: initially for calculating runoff and subsequently for forecasting transmission losses. The outcomes include a runoff connectivity map, at a spatial resolution of 250 m × 250 m, presenting the runoff depth (in mm) for each pixel based on the direct runoff generated at that pixel and reaching the catchment outlet. This connectivity map aids planners in comprehending the dynamics of surface runoff towards a catchment outlet, assisting in identifying potential locations for future water harvesting structures. The process integrates 38 years of precipitation data, enabling predictions not only for average annual runoff but also for the return periods of various annual runoff volumes. Despite the simplicity of the model, a positive Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency value was observed in 11 out of the 28 catchments.

Abstract:The shortage of good-quality water resources is an important issue in arid and semiarid zones. Stormwater-harvesting systems that are capable of delivering good-quality wastewater for non-potable uses while taking into account environmental and health requirements must be developed. For this reason, the availability of water resources of marginal quality, like stormwater, can be a significant contribution to the water supply. Current stormwater management practices in the world require the creation of control systems that monitor quality and quantity of the water and the development of stormwater basins to store increased runoff volumes. Public health and safety considerations should be considered. Urban and suburban development, with the creation of buildings and roads and innumerable related activities, turns rain and snow into unwitting agents of damage to our nation's waterways. This urban and suburban runoff, legally known as stormwater, is one of the most significant sources of water pollution in the world. Based on various factors like water quality, runoff flow rate and speed, and the topography involved, stormwater can be directed into basins, purification plants, or to the sea. Accurate floodplain maps are the key to better floodplain management. The aim of this work is to use geographic information systems (GIS) to monitor and control the effect of stormwater. The graphic and mapping capabilities of GIS provide strong tools for conveying information and forecasts of different storm-water flow and buildup scenarios. Analyses of hydrologic processes, rainfall simulations, and spatial patterns of water resources were performed with GIS, which means, based on integrated data set, the flow of the water was introduced into the GIS. Abstract:There is a growing interest in developing GEE applications to improve the reusability of GEE scripts and reduce manual effort for water-body extraction. Right now, there is a need for GEE applications that can serve both remote sensing experts and non-technical persons. Those applications should also be powerful enough to handle the entire water body extraction workflow and can handle various geomorphic and geospatial conditions. Given these needs and challenges, this study presents the MultiRS Flood Mapper, a GEE application that integrates multimodal remote sensing imageries, advanced dynamic thresholding algorithms, and a recently introduced powerful postprocessing approach – Quantile-Based Filling & Refining, to improve classification results under the influence of dense vegetation and cloud, and in regions with constrained hydraulic conditions. The MultiRS Flood Mapper comes with a self-explanatory and user-friendly interface with most computation modules fully automated, allowing the application great potential to serve both technical and non-technical users.
