Abstract:Xenon binding has received considerable interest, but effective hosts remain rare, and the majority of assembly-type hosts are barely explored. Here, we report the synthesis, self-assembly, and xenon inclusion behavior with a homemade mesomeric bisurea–bisthiourea macrocycle. Compared to its racemic counterparts as recently investigated, the single mesomeric macrocycle forms even more comprehensive dimerization assemblies. From the single macrocycle component, up to two pairs of enantiomeric homochiral dimeric assemblies are formed. In the presence of xenon, the assembly diversity was pushed further, and an additional pair of enantiomeric heterochiral assemblies is induced. The diverse assembly comes from the macrocycle component adopting a folded, dissymmetric chiral conformation and undergoing spontaneous symmetry breaking upon cross-buckling together. The formed capsular assemblies possess a sealed, adaptive cavity for accommodating xenon. The cumulative xenon binding constant with the induced heterochiral capsule is about two times higher than the prior one assembled from racemic counterparts. The xenon-induced heterochiral capsule formation with the mesomeric macrocycle again demonstrates that xenon can find its own preferred host from a dynamic self-assembly system and likes to be accommodated by a more spherical van der Waals surrounding.

Abstract:Abstract Xenon binding has attracted interest due to the potential for xenon separation and emerging applications in magnetic resonance imaging. Compared to their covalent counterparts, assembled hosts that are able to effectively bind xenon are rare. Here, we report a tight yet soft chiral macrocycle dimeric capsule for efficient and adaptive xenon binding in both crystal form and solution. The chiral bisurea-bisthiourea macrocycle can be easily synthesized in multi-gram scale. Through assembly, the flexible macrocycles are locked in a bowl-shaped conformation and buckled to each other, wrapping up a tight, completely sealed yet adjustable cavity suitable for xenon, with a very high affinity for an assembled host. A slow-exchange process and drastic spectral changes are observed in both 1 H and 129 Xe NMR. With the easy synthesis, modification and reversible characteristics, we believe the robust yet adaptive assembly system may find applications in xenon sequestration and magnetic resonance imaging-based biosensing.

Abstract:In the past two decades, substantial advances have been made on the asymmetric alkyne functionalization by the activation of inert alkynes. However, these asymmetric transformations have so far been mostly limited to transition metal catalysis, and chiral Bronsted acid-catalyzed examples are rarely explored. Here, we report a chiral Bronsted acid-catalyzed dearomatization reaction of phenol- and indole-tethered homopropargyl amines, allowing the practical and atom-economical synthesis of a diverse array of valuable fused polycyclic enones and indolines bearing a chiral quaternary carbon stereocenter and two contiguous stereogenic centers in moderate to good yields with excellent diastereoselectivities and generally excellent enantioselectivities (up to >99% enantiomeric excess). This protocol demonstrates Bronsted acid-catalyzed asymmetric dearomatizations via vinylidene-quinone methides.

Abstract:The catalytic asymmetric construction of axially chiral C-N atropisomers remains a formidable challenge due to their low rotational barriers and is largely reliant on toxic, cost-intensive, and precious metal catalysts. In sharp contrast, we herein describe the first nickel-catalyzed atroposelective C-H alkylation for the construction of C-N axially chiral compounds with the aid of a chiral heteroatom-substituted secondary phosphine oxide (HASPO)-ligated Ni-Al bimetallic catalyst. A wide range of alkenes, including terminal and internal alkenes, were well compatible with the reaction, providing a variety of benzimidazole derivatives in high yields and enantioselectivities (up to 97:3 e.r.). The key to success was the identification of novel HASPOs as highly effective chiral preligands. Mechanistic studies revealed the catalyst mode of action, and in-depth data science analysis elucidated the key features of the responsible chiral preligands in controlling the enantioselectivity.

Abstract:Abstract N-N axially chiral biaryls represent a rarely explored class of atropisomers. Reported herein is construction of diverse classes of diaxially chiral biaryls containing N-N and C-N/C-C diaxes in distal positions in excellent enantioselectivity and diastereoselectivity. The N-N chiral axis in the products provides a handle toward solvent-driven diastereodivergence, as has been realized in the coupling of a large scope of benzamides and sterically hindered alkynes, affording diaxes in complementary diastereoselectivity. The diastereodivergence has been elucidated by computational studies which revealed that the hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP) solvent molecule participated in an unusual manner as a solvent as well as a ligand and switched the sequence of two competing elementary steps, resulting in switch of the stereoselectivity of the alkyne insertion and inversion of the configuration of the C-C axis. Further cleavage of the N-directing group in the diaxial chiral products transforms the diastereodivergence to enantiodivergence.

Abstract:An expedient synthesis of a new family of configurationally stable dioxa[6]helicenes was established using a sequential helicoselective organocatalyzed heteroannulation/eliminative aromatization via enantioenriched fused 2-nitro dihydrofurans featuring both central and helical chiralities. Abstract:Axially chiral C2-arylquinoline has been successfully constructed via asymmetric heteroannulation of alkynes catalyzed by chiral phosphoric acid with high yield and high enantioselectivity. Inspired by this intriguing work, theoretical calculations have been carried out, and the detailed reaction mechanism has been elaborated, in which the whole reaction can be divided into steps including hydrogen transfer, C-N bonding, annulation reaction and the final dehydration processes. The initial hydrogen-transfer reaction has two possible pathways, while the subsequent C-N bonding process has eight possible pathways. Then, after the annulation reaction and the final dehydration processes, the major product and byproduct were formed. QTAIM and IGMH analyses were used to illustrate the role of weak intermolecular interactions in the catalytic process, and the distortion/interaction and EDA analyses provided a deeper understanding of the origin of enantioselectivity. The calculated results are consistent with the experimental results. This work would provide valuable insights into asymmetric reactions catalyzed by chiral phosphoric acid.

Abstract:Abstract Heterohelicenes are of increasing importance in the fields of materials science, molecular recognition, and asymmetric catalysis. However, enantioselective construction of these molecules, especially by organocatalytic methods, is challenging, and few methods are available. In this study, we synthesize enantioenriched 1-(3-indol)-quino[n]helicenes through chiral phosphoric acid-catalyzed Povarov reaction followed by oxidative aromatization. The method has a broad substrate scope and offers rapid access to an array of chiral quinohelicenes with enantioselectivities up to 99%. Additionally, the photochemical and electrochemical properties of selected quinohelicenes are explored.

Abstract:The construction of chiral materials with precise chirality is of vital importance in biology and chemistry. Despite numerous chiral materials have been fabricated, it still remains a fundamental challenge to understanding the chiral propensity with subtle changes of the building blocks. Here, the chirality properties assembled from chiral phenylalanine gelators and achiral naphthalimide (NI) derivatives were successfully regulated, showing the minimal difference on the 4th site of the halogenated NI induced great changes of the chirality characteristics of assembly. The results suggested that hydrogen bonds, π-π stacking interactions are the driving forces of the assemblies, whereas different halogenations indeed lead to the subtle variety of hydrogen bonding interactions and staking mode between the two molecules. This study provides feasible strategies to precisely modulate supramolecular chirality through single point halogenation.

Abstract:In order to study the emergence of homochirality during complex molecular systems, most works mainly concentrated on the resolution of a pair of enantiomers. However, the preference of homochiral over heterochiral isomers has been overlooked, with very limited examples focusing only on noncovalent interactions. We herein report on diastereomeric discrimination of twin-cavity cages (denoted as diphanes) against heterochiral tris-(2-aminopropyl)amine (TRPN) bearing triple stereocenters. This diastereomeric selectivity results from distinct spatial orientation of reactive secondary amines on TRPN. Homochiral TRPNs with all reactive moieties rotating in the same way facilitate the formation of homochiral and achiral meso diphanes with low strain energy, while heterochiral TRPNs with uneven orientation of secondary amines preclude the formation of cage-like entity, since the virtual diphanes exhibit considerably high strain. Moreover, homochiral diphanes self-assemble into an acentric superstructure composed of single-handed helices, which exhibits interesting nonlinear optical behavior. Such a property is a unique occurrence for organic cages, which thus showcases their potential to spawn novel materials with interesting properties and functions.
Hydrogen-Bonding Assembly Meets Anion Coordination Chemistry: Framework Shaping and Polarity Tuning for Xenon/Krypton Separation

Abstract:Hybrid hydrogen-bonded (H-bonded) frameworks built from charged components or metallotectons offer diverse guest-framework interactions for target-specific separations. We present here a study to systematically explore the coordination chemistry of monovalent halide anions, i.e., F- , Cl- , Br- , and I- , with the aim to develop hybrid H-bond synthons that enable the controllable construction of microporous H-bonded frameworks exhibiting fine-tunable surface polarity within the adaptive cavities for realistic xenon/krypton (Xe/Kr) separation. The spherical halide anions, especially Cl- , Br- , and I- , are found to readily participate in the charge-assisted H-bonding assembly with well-defined coordination behaviors, resulting in robust frameworks bearing open halide anions within the distinctive 1D pore channels. The activated frameworks show preferential binding towards Xe (IAST Xe/Kr selectivity ca. 10.5) because of the enhanced polarizability and the pore confinement effect. Specifically, dynamic column Xe/Kr separation with a record-high separation factor (SF=7.0) among H-bonded frameworks was achieved, facilitating an efficient Xe/Kr separation in dilute, CO2 -containing gas streams exactly mimicking the off-gas of spent nuclear fuel (SNF) reprocessing.

Abstract:Enantioenriched phosphorus compounds play crucial roles in many fields ranging from catalyst to materials science to drug development. Despite advances in the construction of phosphacycles, incorporation of a P-chirogenic center into heterocycles remains challenging. Here, we report an effective method for the preparation of phosphacycles through nickel-catalyzed [4+2] heteroannulation of internal alkynes with aminophosphanes derived from o -haloanilines. Notably, chiral 2-λ5-phosphaquinolines can be prepared from P-stereogenic substrates via NH/PH tautomeric equilibrium without loss of stereochemical integrity. The strategy is found to exhibit a broad scope in terms of both reaction components, enabling modular construction of libraries of 2-λ5-phosphaquinolines with different steric and electronic properties for fine-tuning photophysical properties, where some of these compounds showed distinct fluorescence with high quantum yields. A series of mechanistic studies further shed light on the pathway of the heteroannulation and reasons for stereospecificity.

Abstract:We report a novel halogen-bond-assisted NHC-catalyzed (dynamic) kinetic resolution strategy for the synthesis of axially chiral heterobiaryls. A class of axially chiral quinolines are prepared efficiently in excellent enantioselectivities (≤98% ee) employing 3-5 mol % NHC catalyst. Mechanistic studies reveal the indispensability of 5-bromo-2-iodobenzaldehyde in this reaction, in which a pivotal halogen bonding interaction plays a crucial role in the process.

Abstract:An efficient asymmetric halogenation of cyclic diaryliodonium salts is demonstrated, which gives access to a wide range of axially chiral 2,2′-dihalobiaryls in good to excellent yields and with excellent enantioselectivities. The use of CuX with chiral bisoxazoline ligand and tetrabutylammonium halides in the unique solvent of hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP) led to the best results in the process. Supramolecular axial chirality in [N-I-N]+-type halogen bonded dimers

Abstract:Axial chiral molecules are extensively used as skeletons in ligands for asymmetric catalysis and as building blocks of chiroptical materials. Designing axial chirality at the supramolecular level potentially endows a material with dynamic tunability and adaptivity. In this work, for the first time, we have reported a series of halogen-bonded dimeric complexes with axial chirality that were formed by noncovalent bonds. The [N-I-N]+-type halogen bond is highly directional and freely rotatable with good linearity and ultra-high bond energy; this bond was introduced to couple quinoline moieties with chiral substitutes. The resultant dimers were stable in solutions with thermo-resistance. Prominent steric effects from the 2' chiral pendant allowed the chirality to be transferred to aryl skeletons with induced preferred axial chirality and optical activities. Halogen-bonded complexation presented visible emissions to afford luminescent axial chiral materials, whereby circularly polarized fluorescence and phosphorescence were achieved. The [N-I-N]+-type halogen bond performed as a powerful tool to construct functional axial chiral compounds, enriching the toolbox for asymmetric synthesis and optics.
Achiral Solvent Inversed Helical Pathway and Cosolvent Controlled Excited-State "Majority Rule" in Enantiomeric Dansulfonamide Assemblies

Abstract:Achiral solvents are commonly utilized to induce the self-assembly of chiral molecules. This study demonstrates that achiral solvents can trigger helicity inversion in the assemblies of dansyl amphiphiles and control the excited-state "majority rule" in assemblies composed of pure enantiomers, through variation of the cosolvent ratio. Specifically, enantiomers of dansyl amphiphiles self-assemble into helical structures with opposite handedness in methanol (MeOH) and acetonitrile (MeCN), together with inversed circular dichroism and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) signals. When a mixture of MeOH and MeCN is employed, the achiral cosolvents collectively affect the CPL of the assemblies in a way similar to that of "mixed enantiomers". The dominant cosolvent governs the CPL signal. As the cosolvent composition shifts from pure MeCN to MeOH, the CPL signals undergo a significant inversion and amplification, with two maxima observed at ≈20% MeOH and 20% MeCN. This study deepens the comprehension of how achiral solvents modulate helical nanostructures and their excited-state chiroptical properties.
Induction of Chiral Hybrid Metal Halides from Achiral Building Blocks.

Abstract:Chiral hybrid organic-inorganic metal halides (HOMHs) with intrinsic noncentrosymmetry have shown great promise for broad applications in chiroptoelectronics, spintronics, and ferroelectronics. However, the construction strategies for chiral HOMHs often involve chiral building blocks in their frameworks, which greatly limit their chemical diversity. Here, we take advantage of a chiral induction approach and have successfully constructed a series of chiral HOMHs, DMA4MX7 (DMA = dimethylammonium, M = Sb or Bi, X = Cl or Br), based on achiral precursors. The resulting chiral products demonstrate a clear enantioenrichment, as confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis and solid-state circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy. The induction of chiral HOMHs enables superior nonlinear optical performances with very high thermal stability and laser resistance. The successful employment of such a chiral induction approach might facilitate the construction of libraries of chiral HOMH crystals from diverse achiral precursors, in particular those into which it is not easy to introduce intrinsic chiral centers, and would thus pave a new way for rational preparation and application of chiral HOMH materials.

Abstract:Xanthine molecule is an intermediate in nucleic acid degradation from the deamination of guanine and is also a compound present in the ancient solar system that is found in high concentrations in extraterrestrial meteorites. The self-assembly of xanthine molecules on inorganic surfaces is therefore of interest for the study of biochemical processes, and it may also be relevant to the fundamental understanding of prebiotic biosynthesis. Using a combination of high-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, two new homochiral xanthine structures have been found on Au(111) under ultrahigh vacuum conditions. Xanthine molecules are found to be self-assembled into two extended homochiral networks tiled by two types of di-pentamer units and stabilized by intermolecular double hydrogen bonding. Our findings indicate that the deamination of guanine into xanthine leads to a very different base pairing potential and the chemical properties of the base which may be of relevance to the function of the cell and potential development of human diseases. Moreover, the adsorption of xanthine molecules on inorganic surfaces leading to homochiral assemblies may be of interest for the fundamental understanding of the emerged chirality at early stages of life.

Herein, we propose a template strategy for finely modulating the stacking configuration of 9-dimethylaminomethyl-10-chloroanthracene (DCAn) dimers in two-dimensional (2D) (DCAn)4Pb3Br10·2CH3(CH2)X-1OH (1-CX, 1  X  8). By introducing alcohol guests with varied carbon lengths from methanol to octanol, 1-CX with different stacking motifs of (anthracene) An dimers are obtained. The fine control on stacking parameters including interplanar distance, overlap ratio, offset along long (dx) and short (dy) axis and intersection angle of An allows a deep insight into the key factors on excimer formation. The experimental and computational results confirm that the excimer interaction is strongly determined by the excimer-types (anthracene or naphthalene) and interplanar overlap. An anthracene-type excimer is formed for 1-CX (6  X  8) once dx locates in the range of 1.08~1.23 Å, while 1-CX (1 X  5) adopt the naphthalene-type excimer for 1.55  dx  1.75 Å. Due to the stronger anthracene-type excimer interaction, a great bathochromic shift of photoluminescence is observed for 1-CX (6  X  8). Additionally, rod-like 1-CX exhibits a high aspect ratio of ~72, thereby generating an excellent performance on optical waveguide with an optical loss coefficient of ~3 dB/mm. This work not only reveals the key factors on An excimer formation, but also provides an effective strategy for better understanding the structure-property of molecular excimers.

Self‐Assembled Nanohelixes Driven by Host‐Guest Interactions and Metal Coordination

Abstract:Helical nanostructures fabricated via the self-assembly of artificial motifs have been a captivating subject because of their structural aesthetics and multiple functionalities. Herein, we report the facile construction of a self-assembled nanohelix (NH) by leveraging an achiral aggregation-induced emission (AIE) luminogen (G) and pillar[5]arene (H), driven by host-guest interactions and metal coordination. Inspired by the "sergeants and soldiers" effect and "majority rule" principle, the host-guest complexation between G and H is employed to fixate the twisted conformation of G for the generation of "contortion sites", which further induced the emergence of helicity as the 1D assemblies are formed via Ag(I) coordination and hexagonally packed into nano-sized fibers. The strategy has proved feasible in both homogeneous and heterogeneous syntheses. Along with the formation of NH, boosted luminescence and enhanced productivity of reactive oxygen species (ROS) are afforded because of the efficient restriction on G, indicating the concurrent regulation of NH's morphology and photophysical properties by supramolecular assembly. In addition, NH also exhibits the capacity for bacteria imaging and photodynamic antibacterial activities against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Escherichia coli (E. coli).
