Abstract:Presented here is the optimization of a planar two-terminal perovskite/silicon tandem solar cell with a texture structure. The developed simulation model is fitted to published experimental results, and the importance of current matching in the two-terminal structure is discussed. With the texture structure optimized and considering current matching, the optimal texture structure improves $J_{sc}$ from 17.9~mA/cm$^2$ to 20.87~mA/cm$^2$ compared to the planar structure, as well as improving the power conversion efficiency from 25.8% to 35.9%. Furthermore, if the quality of the perovskite thin film and tunneling junction efficiency with a smaller voltage penalty can be improved, then the efficiency can be further improved to 38.13%. This indicates that this tandem solar cell still has much room for improvement.

Abstract:Perovskite silicon tandem solar cells can overcome the efficiency limit of silicon single‐junction solar cells. In 2‐terminal perovskite silicon tandem solar cells current matching of the sub‐cells is an important requirement. In this work, we report a current‐matched tandem solar cell using a planar front/ rear side textured silicon hetero‐junction (SHJ) bottom solar cell with a p‐i‐n perovskite top solar cell that yields a high certified short‐circuit current density (jSC) of 19.6 mA/cm2. Measures taken to improve the device are guided by optical simulation and a derived optical roadmap towards maximized tandem current density. To realize current matching of the two sub‐cells, variation of the perovskite bandgap from ∽1.68 eV to 1.64 eV and thickness is investigated. Spectrometric characterization, in which current‐voltage curves of tandem devices are recorded at systematically varied spectral irradiance conditions, is applied to determine the current matching point. In addition, we analyze remaining device limitations such as non‐radiative recombination at the perovskite ́s interfaces. Replacing the hole‐transport layer PTAA by 2PACz resulted in an overall certified power conversion efficiency (PCE) of up to 26.8%. Our work highlights that precise simulation based on the device structure is essential as it provides efficient paths toward improving the device efficiency. This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:Considering the current matching of subcells, optimized active layer thicknesses are obtained for structures of indium–tin oxide (ITO)/poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene) doped with poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS)/poly(3-hexylthiophene):[6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (P3HT:PCBM)/zinc oxide (ZnO)/PEDOT:PSS/poly[3,6-bis(4'-dodecyl-[2,2']bithiophenyl-5-yl)-2,5-bis(2-ethyl-hexyl)-2,5-dihydropyrrolo[3,4-]pyrrole-1,4-dione]:[6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (pBBTDPP2:PCBM)/Al (normal) and ITO/PEDOT:PSS/pBBTDPP2:PCBM/ZnO/PEDOT:PSS/P3HT:PCBM/Al (reverse) by detailed optical simulations. Because of the difference in optical electric field distributions induced by layer sequences and material properties, it is observed that the normal structure shows its superiority in current matching when the active layers are relatively thick. However, the reverse structure is better when the active layers are relatively thin. On the basis of the optimized active layer thicknesses, the influence of the optical spacer on device performance is discussed. The two structures mentioned above and two different spacer positions are considered here. From our results, it is clearly shown that the spacer closer to the cathode works more effectively and the spacer may further improve the matching of subcell current densities for the optimized tandem cell.
Nitride/Perovskite Tandem Solar Cell with High Stability: Analytical Study of Adjusting Current Matching Condition

Abstract:One of the essential challenges of tandem solar cells is designing and adjusting the current-matched tandem structures with high efficiency and stability. Nitride-based wide band gap semiconductors, owing to their high stability and high resistance against the cosmic rays, are appropriate elements to apply as the top cell of tandem solar cells. On the other hand, the organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites are emerging materials with exclusive electronic properties such as tunable band gap, low cost, simple manufacturing process, and efficient charge transport properties, making them capable candidates to be used in tandem layered structures. The aim of this paper is to adjust and optimize the performance of a two-terminal tandem solar cell consisting of InxGa1-xN as the top cell and a FAPbIyBr3-y as the bottom cell. We have studied the effect of different practical parameters such as the indium molar of the top cell, iodine molar of the bottom cell, the thickness of each layer, threading dislocation density of InxGa1-xN, and surface texturing effect on the performance of the two-terminal tandem structure. Because of the prominence of current matching problem in two-terminal tandem structures, we have determined the optimum situation for maximum light harvesting along with the minimum value of current matching factor. In the optimum situation, the current matching factor of 0.15 mA/cm2 leads to the power conversion efficiency of 25.17% for the device.

Abstract:In this study, we investigated the pathways for integration of perovskite and silicon solar cells through variation of the properties of the interconnecting layer (ICL). The user-friendly computer simulation software wxAMPS was used to conduct the investigation. The simulation started with numerical inspection of the individual single junction sub-cell, and this was followed by performing an electrical and optical evaluation of monolithic 2T tandem PSC/Si, with variation of the thickness and bandgap of the interconnecting layer. The electrical performance of the monolithic crystalline silicon and CH3NH3PbI3 perovskite tandem configuration was observed to be the best with the insertion of a 50 nm thick (Eg ≥ 2.25 eV) interconnecting layer, which directly contributed to the optimum optical absorption coverage. These design parameters improved the optical absorption and current matching, while also enhancing the electrical performance of the tandem solar cell, which benefited the photovoltaic aspects through lowering the parasitic loss.

Abstract:This paper presents our theoretical study of tandem perovskite solar cells, simulated using a solar cell capacitance one-dimensional tool. The simulation reveals that the efficiency reaches 30.88% while combining Methylammonium Lead Iodide (MAPbI3) and Methylammonium Tin Iodide (MASnI3) as an absorber. The present work has also analyzed the effects of different materials as an Electron Transport Layer and Hole Transport Layer, and the effects of back metal contact, absorber layers defects, light radiation power, light direction, etc. Molecular Dynamic study has found that the thermal properties of MAPbI3 and MASnI3 perovskite layers are favorable to the solar cell efficiency and performance. In addition, the effect of temperature variation on solar cell performance is investigated, and the impact of defect density of the absorber layer is also explored. It was found that low defect density is helpful to achieve high device performance. Moreover, the work function of the front metal contact plays an important role, and it should be more than 5.31 eV for the proposed devices to achieve high performance.
Optimizing tandem solar cells efficiency through current matching technique in lead-free perovskite/c-Si and lead-free perovskite/CIGS absorbers

Abstract:Lead halide hybrid solar cells have demonstrated exceptional performance in recent years, but concerns over their toxicity and instability have spurred the development of perovskite-based cells without lead. This work explores a lead-free perovskite material consisting of cesium tin-germanium triiodide solid solution perovskite (CsSn 0.5 Ge 0.5 I 3 ) is utilized to fabricate solar cells with varying thicknesses and donor densities of the absorber layer. The results imply that enhancing the thickness of the layer boosts the power conversion efficiency (PCE) by facilitating better photon absorption. However, this increase in thickness also causes a reduction in both the open-circuit voltage ( V OC ) and fill factor (FF). In other words, while thickening the layer improves PCE through increased photon absorption, it also negatively impacts other key performance metrics, such as V OC and FF. Conversely, the effect of donor density (N d ) on the cell's performance is less significant than the CsSn 0.5 Ge 0.5 I 3 layer's thickness. This study sheds light on the critical role of thickness and donor density in optimizing the performance of CsSn 0.5 Ge 0.5 I 3 -based solar cells. The performance of c-Si and CIGS-based single junction bottom cells under standalone conditions is also analyzed using JV and EQE curves. The C-Si-based single junction solar cell exhibited greater efficiency (21.28%) in converting photons of different wavelengths into electrons compared to the CIGS-based solar cell (16.26%). Lastly, for increasing the PCE of the single-junction solar cells the study moves towards multi-junction solar cells. In this context, two highly efficient TSCs (LFPVK/c-Si and LFPVK/CIGS) are designed and analyzed using the current matching technique, which involves the series connection of the top and bottom cells with increased PV parameters (LFPVK/c-Si-J SC : 21.44 mA/cm 2 , V OC : 1.45 V, FF: 82.17%, PCE: 25.54% and LFPVK/CIGS-J SC : 21.83 mA/cm 2 , V OC : 1.33 V, FF: 73.34%, PCE: 21.45%).

Light Management Enhancement for Four-Terminal Perovskite-Silicon Tandem Solar Cells: The Impact of the Optical Properties and Thickness of the Spacer Layer between Sub-Cells

Abstract:Mechanical stacking of a thin film perovskite-based solar cell on top of crystalline Si (cSi) solar cell has recently attracted a lot of attention as it is considered a viable route to overcome the limitations of cSi single junction power conversion efficiency. Effective light management is however crucial to minimize reflection or parasitic absorption losses in either the top cell or in the light in-coupling of the transmitted light to the bottom sub-cell. The study here is focused on calculating an optimum performance of a four-terminal mechanically stacked tandem structure by varying the optical property and thickness of the spacer between top and bottom sub-cells. The impact of the nature of the spacer material, with its refractive index and absorption coefficient, as well as the thickness of that layer is used as variables in the optical simulation. The optical simulation is done by using the transfer matrix-method (TMM) on a stack of a semi-transparent perovskite solar cell (top cell) mounted on top of a cSi interdigitated back contact (IBC) solar cell (bottom cell). Two types of perovskite absorber material are considered, with very similar optical properties. The total internal and external short circuit current (Jsc) losses for the semitransparent perovskite top cell as a function of the different optical spacers (material and thickness) are calculated. While selecting the optical spacer materials, Jsc for both silicon (bottom cell) and perovskite (top cell) were considered with the aim to optimize the stack for maximum overall short circuit current. From these simulations, it was found that this optimum in our four-terminal tandem occurred at a thickness of the optical spacer of 160 nm for a material with refractive index n = 1.25. At this optimum, with a combination of selected semi-transparent perovskite top cell, the simulated maximum overall short circuit current (Jsc-combined, max) equals to 34.31 mA/cm². As a result, the four-terminal perovskite/cSi multi-junction solar cell exhibits a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 25.26%, as the sum of the perovskite top cell PCE = 16.50% and the bottom IBC cSi cell PCE = 8.75%. This accounts for an improvement of more than 2% absolute when compared to the stand-alone IBC cSi solar cell with 23.2% efficiency.
Current or Power Matching? A Third Option for Monolithic All-Perovskite Tandem Solar Cells

Abstract:Multijunction solar cells offer high potential to improve the efficiency beyond the single-junction limit. The record power conversion efficiency of monolithic all-perovskite tandem solar cells (26.4%) has now surpassed that of the single-junction counterparts (25.7%). The two-terminal tandem architectures, in most cases, require a “matched” current between the top and bottom subcells for an optimal tandem performance. In some cases, where the two subcells have distinct fill factors, a “power matching” strategy shows better performance than “current matching”. In this study, we prove that optimal performance of monolithic all-perovskite tandem solar cells is obtained when the top subcell has a higher short-circuit current than the bottom one. This is attributed to both optical and electrical properties of the all-perovskite tandem cells. We also investigate the optimal tandem configurations under real-world conditions, where solar spectra, angle of incidence, and cell temperature are different from the standard test conditions. We find that the top subcell shifts to thinner optimal thickness under blue-rich solar spectra. We also observe that the bottom subcell shifts to thicker optimal thickness due to larger angle of incidence under real-world conditions. Since two perovskite subcells have similar temperature coefficients, the real-world cell temperatures have little impact the optimal tandem configurations, but will affect the annual energy yield. We further obtain the real-world optimized tandem configurations, which can increase the annual energy yield compared with the one optimized under standard test conditions. The current-mismatching losses under real-world conditions can be reduced by optimized configurations, and even be turned into energy gains in certain cases. This finding enhances the confidence in promoting high-efficient, customizable tandem solar cells for different regions and installation methods.
Nanophotonic Light Management for Perovskite-Silicon Tandem Solar Cells

Abstract:Perovskite-silicon tandem solar cells are currently one of the most investigated concepts to overcome the theoretical limit for the power conversion efficiency of silicon solar cells. For monolithic tandem solar cells the available light must be distributed equally between the two subcells, which is known as current matching. For a planar device design, a global optimization of the layer thicknesses in the perovskite top cell allows current matching to be reached and reflective losses of the solar cell to be minimized at the same time. However, even after this optimization reflection and parasitic absorption losses occur, which add up to 7 mA/cm$^2$. In this contribution we use numerical simulations to study, how well hexagonal sinusoidal nanotextures in the perovskite top-cell can reduce the reflective losses of the combined tandem device. We investigate three configurations. The current density utilization can be increased from 91% for the optimized planar reference to 98% for the best nanotextured device (period 500 nm and peak-to-valley height 500 nm), where 100% refers to the Tiedje-Yablonovitch limit. In a first attempt to experimentally realize such nanophotonically structured perovskite solar cells for monolithic tandems, we investigate the morphology of perovskite layers, which are deposited onto sinusoidally structured substrates.

Abstract:Monolithic 2T perovskite/Si tandem solar cells with different interlayers to avoid the refractive index mismatch at the interface were systematically investigated to demonstrate the potential of using this strategy for efficient light-harvesting. The device structure was carefully optimized to achieve maximal matched photocurrent (Jmax) between two subcells through optical simulation based on transfer matrix method. The results showed that the tandem devices with an inverted structure can yield much higher Jmax than that of the regular devices with potentially thinner Si being used and exhibit less sensitive to the thickness of top perovskite cell, indicating that they are more suitable for the construction of high-performance tandem cells. Moreover, by introducing an optical interlayer with an intermediate refractive index to enhance light coupling from the top to the bottom cell, a significantly enhanced Jmax from 18.02mA/cm2 to 19.13mA/cm2 has been achieved for those inverted tandem cells. Similar results have also been obtained in the tandem device with bilayer interlayers. Optical properties within the device indicated that the increase of the Jmax with optimized interlayers was ascribed to the effective reduction of interface reflection loss, which can facilitate the better light utilization. Finally, the enhanced Jmax under AM 1.5 conditions using the interlayers would also lead to a strong improvement in the yearly energy yield under the real condition.

Abstract:Solar energy is now dealing with the challenge of overcoming the Shockley–Queisser limit of single bandgap solar cells. Multilayer solar cells are a promising solution as the so-called third generation of solar cells. The combination of materials with different bandgap energies in multijunction cells enables power conversion efficiencies up to 30% at reasonable costs. However, interfaces between different layers are critical due to optical losses. In this work, we propose a hybrid metasurface in a monolithic perovskite-silicon solar cell. The design takes advantage of light management to optimize the absorption in the perovskite, as well as an efficient light guiding towards the silicon subcell. Furthermore, we have also included the effect of a textured back contact. The optimum proposal provides an enhancement of the matched short-circuit current density of a 20.5% respect to the used planar reference.

Matching the photocurrent of perovskite/organic tandem solar modules by varying the cell width

Abstract:Photocurrent matching in conventional monolithic tandem solar cells is achieved by choosing semiconductors with complementary absorption spectra and by carefully adjusting the optical properties of the complete top and bottom stacks. However, for thin film photovoltaic technologies at the module level, another design variable significantly alleviates the task of photocurrent matching, namely the cell width, whose modification can be readily realized by the adjustment of the module layout. Herein we demonstrate this concept at the experimental level for the first time for a 2T-mechanically stacked perovskite (FAPbBr3)/organic (PM6:Y6:PCBM) tandem mini-module, an unprecedented approach for these emergent photovoltaic technologies fabricated in an independent manner. An excellent Isc matching is achieved by tuning the cell widths of the perovskite and organic modules to 7.22 mm (PCEPVKT-mod= 6.69%) and 3.19 mm (PCEOPV-mod= 12.46%), respectively, leading to a champion efficiency of 14.94% for the tandem module interconnected in series with an aperture area of 20.25 cm2. Rather than demonstrating high efficiencies at the level of small lab cells, our successful experimental proof-of-concept at the module level proves to be particularly useful to couple devices with non-complementary semiconductors, either in series or in parallel electrical connection, hence overcoming the limitations imposed by the monolithic structure.

Abstract:In this article, the two-terminal perovskite/ u-CIGS tandem device is performed and investigated numerically using Atlas Silvaco-TCAD tools. The structural configuration of FTO/TiO 2 /MAPbI 3 /Spiro-OMeTAD/Gold was performed, calibrated, and validated with overall good agreement. This validated numerical model is selected to be used as a top cell for the tandem device. In addition, the optimized ultrathin CIGS solar cell from our previous work has been used for a good substrate (bottom cell) for optimized perovskite top-cell. The simulated perovskite and u-CIGS cells have been performed individually revealing 17.84% and 12.41% efficiency, respectively, all in good agreement with published experimental results. The performed and calibrated tandem model is then studied to analyze the impact of changing the thickness of the cell layers such as for ETL, perovskite, HTL layers on perovskite, and tandem cell characteristics. The influence of the perovskite and HTL doping density is also investigated. The achieved results allow gaining a better understanding and a deeper insight into the effects of the physical dimensions and materials doping concentration on cell performance. Large-Area 23%-Efficient Monolithic Perovskite/Homojunction-Silicon Tandem Solar Cell with Enhanced UV Stability Using Down-Shifting Material

Abstract:UV-induced degradation and parasitic ultraviolet (UV) absorption by the "sun-facing" carrier transport layer in a perovskite cell hinders stability and electrical performance when the perovskite cell is a top cell for a Si-based tandem. In this work, we tackle these issues by applying textured polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) films that incorporate a down-shifting material (Ba,Sr)2SiO4:Eu2+ micron phosphor on the front of monolithic perovskite/silicon tandem cells. This film serves multiple purposes: antireflective control for the top cell, light trapping in the Si cell, as well as absorbing UV and re-emitting green light with high quantum yield. When applied onto a 4 cm2 monolithic perovskite/silicon tandem solar cell, the power conversion efficiency was improved from 20.1% (baseline device without any antireflective film) to 22.3% (device with an antireflective film but without the phosphors) and to 23.1% (device with down-shifting phosphor-incorprated antireflective film). The steady-state efficiency of 23.0% and a high fill factor (FF) of 81% achieved by the champion device are the highest values to date for a monolithic perovskite/silicon tandem that uses a homojunction silicon bottom cell. Moreover, results of a continuous UV irradiation test show that this composite down-shifting antireflection film significantly enhances the UV stability for the tandem device. This work demonstrates an elegant approach for improving the efficiency and stability for larger-area perovskite/silicon tandems.

Abstract:Monolithic perovskite/silicon tandem solar cells are of great appeal as they promise high power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) at affordable cost. In state-of-the-art tandems, the perovskite top cell is electrically coupled to a silicon heterojunction bottom cell via a self-assembled monolayer (SAM), anchored on a transparent conductive oxide (TCO), which enables efficient charge transfer between the subcells. 1-3 Yet, reproducible high-performance tandem solar cells require energetically homogenous SAM coverage, which remains challenging, especially on textured silicon bottom cells. Here, we resolve this issue by employing ultrathin (5 nm) amorphous indium zinc oxide (IZO) as the interconnecting TCO, exploiting its high surface-potential homogeneity resulting from the absence of crystal grains, and higher density of SAM anchoring sites when compared to commonly employed crystalline TCOs. Combined with optical enhancements via equally thin IZO rear electrodes and improved front contact stacks, an independently certified PCE of 32.5% was obtained, which ranks amongst the highest for perovskite/silicon tandems. Our ultrathin transparent contact approach reduces indium consumption by approximately 80%, which is of importance towards sustainable PV manufacturing. 4 .

Abstract:Improved stability and efficiency of two-terminal monolithic perovskite-silicon tandem solar cells will require reductions in recombination losses. By combining a triple-halide perovskite (1.68 electron volt bandgap) with a piperazinium iodide interfacial modification, we improved the band alignment, reduced nonradiative recombination losses, and enhanced charge extraction at the electron-selective contact. Solar cells showed open-circuit voltages of up to 1.28 volts in p-i-n single junctions and 2.00 volts in perovskite-silicon tandem solar cells. The tandem cells achieve certified power conversion efficiencies of up to 32.5%.

Abstract:This research presents a design and analysis of a tandem solar cell, combining thin film wide bandgap Sb2S3 (1.72 eV) and narrow bandgap CIGS (1.15 eV) for the top and bottom sub-cells, respectively. The integration of all thin film layers enhances flexibility, rendering the tandem solar cell suitable for applications such as wearable electronics. To optimize the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the tandem solar device, advanced technology computer-aided design (TCAD) simulation tools are employed to estimate loss mechanisms and fine-tune parameters for each layer. An experimentally validated optoelectronic model is introduced, calibrated and validated against fabricated reference solar cells for the individual top and bottom cells. The calibrated model is then utilized to propose optimization routines for the Sb2S3/CIGS tandem solar cell. The initial tandem cell exhibits a JSC of 15.72 mA/cm2 and a PCE of 15.36%. The efficiency drop in the tandem configuration is identified primarily in the top cell. A systematic optimization process for the top cell is initiated, exploring various configurations, including HTL-free and ETL-free setups. Moreover, an np homojunction structure for the top cell is proposed. Optimization routines are applied that involve determining optimal thickness and doping concentration of the n-layer, investigating the effect of p-layer doping concentration, and exploring the influence of the work function of the front contact. As a result, the tandem cell efficiency is significantly improved to 23.33% at the current matching point (CMP), with a JSC of 17.15 mA/cm2. The findings contribute to the advancement of thin-film tandem solar cell technology, showcasing its potential for efficient and flexible photovoltaic applications.
