Abstract:In this paper, we predict an unexpected perfect optical absorption phenomenon of oblique-incident transverse magnetic polarized light in a metallic grating situated in asymmetric surroundings. Two physical processes result in the anomalous absorption: One is the total internal reflection at the grating's interface; another is the Fabry-Pérot-like resonance supported in the grating's slits. For small filling factor grating (f <; 0.9), the enhanced anomalous absorption only appears at grazing incidence with incident angle larger than 85°; however, if the filling factor is sufficiently large (f > 0.9), anomalous absorption is realizable only if the total internal reflection occurs. The influences of structural parameters, such as grating thickness, slits material on the anomalous absorption are investigated. Based on these properties, a plasmonic absorption device with a designed absorption line shape is proposed.

Abstract:Echelle grating provides high spectral resolving power and diffraction efficiency in a broadband wavelength range by the Littrow mode. The spectrometer with the cross-dispersed echelle scheme has seen remarkable growth in recent decades. Rather than the conventional approach with common blazed grating, the cross-dispersed echelle scheme achieves the two-dimensional spatial distribution of the spectrum by one exposure without scanning in the broadband spectral range. It is the fastest and most sensitive spectroscopic technology as of now, and it has been extensively applied in commercial and astronomical spectrometers. In this review, we first highlight the characteristics of the echelle and then present the optical layout, detection approach, and method of calibration. Finally, we discuss the state-of-the-art implementations and applications of commercial and astronomical instruments.

Abstract:In this paper, we explain and unify the low diffraction efficiency behavior of echelle gratings at blaze wavelengths under Littrow mount in terms of the metal refractive index (RI). The similarity in the diffraction efficiency (DE) behavior (e.g., efficiency decline and valley-like diffraction curves for low-efficiency orders) of echelle gratings with different metals at TM polarization points the research line of sight to the RIs. Further, the numerical calculations based on the rigorous vector diffraction theory show that the efficiency behavior of the echelle grating at TM polarization is extremely sensitive to the imaginary part of the RI. This is because there is a series of low light-collecting ability (LCA) regions as the imaginary part of the RI changes in the echelle grating, resulting in several disturbed DE zones. In addition, the increase in groove depth improves the LCA at both polarizations, which moves away from the low LCA region at the TM polarization. This leads to low polarization sensitivity and higher DE for echelle gratings, further revealing the essence of the efficiency improvement by increasing the groove depth. From the RI to the LCA, these results will give new concepts to designing and fabricating broadband high-efficiency echelle gratings.

Abstract:Based on the rigorous coupled-wave analysis (RCWA) algorithm, we have analyzed the extraordinary transmission through elliptical gold nanowire grating for s-polarization. The transmittance is rather low in the common case because surface plasmons cannot be excited for this polarization, here we show that a dielectric film which sustains a surface wave on the top of the elliptical gold nanowire grating can strongly enhance the transmittance.

Abstract:We present an intuitive analytical model for extraordinary optical transmission (EOT) through corrugated metallic films. In the framework of this model, EOT emerges from standing wave resonances of the different diffraction orders, and is an inherent property of periodic structures, which does not require specific polarization dependent properties such as surface plasmons. The model correctly predicts the conditions for the EOT resonances in various geometrical configurations, in both TE and TM polarizations,and in the subwavelength and non-subwavelength spectral regimes, using the same underlying mechanism.

Abstract:Optical structures with balanced loss and gain provide an efficient platform to study the features of light propagation under non-Hermitian parity-time symmetry. Here, we report a feasible design of one-dimensional parity-time symmetric diffraction grating, where the real and imaginary parts of refractive index are separately modulated. Due to the spontaneous breaking of parity-time symmetry at the exceptional point, asymmetric diffractions are observed between a pair of oblique incident light. This asymmetric phenomenon, determined by the modulation direction of the introduced parity-time symmetry, is also polarization-dependent. The coupled-mode theory is implemented to theoretically analyze the polarization dependent asymmetric diffraction, showing consistence with numerical simulations. Our findings may provide a feasible way for manipulating light and instructively inspire the development of diffraction optics. Published by AIP Publishing.
A High-Q Vertical Light Emission From Active Parity-Time Symmetric Gratings

Abstract:This work presents a theoretical investigation of an active photonic grating of the parity-time (PT) symmetric architecture. The analytical study of the free-space mode propagation from the grating structure indicates the unique bifurcation property due to the PT-symmetry modulation. It is shown that both the gain/loss contrast and the lattice constant parameters are critical factors to modulate the active photonic system in between the PT-symmetry to the symmetry-broken phases. Furthermore, numerical simulations via the Rigorous Coupled-Wave Analysis (RCWA) method discover the existence of a unique Spectral Singularity (SS) phenomenon in this PT grating structure, which corresponds to a non-trivial single-mode and near-zero bandwidth photonic resonant emission. Also, the guiding procedure for fulfilling SS modes is found to be related to the unique formation of the scattering matrix applied in the PT-symmetric photonic gratings. This theoretical work takes a fresh look into the active PT-symmetric photonic gratings focusing on the discovery of new free-space emission modes rather than the commonly studied unidirectional properties, which could contribute to the development of novel low-threshold and super-coherent surface-emitting devices.

Abstract:Transmission metallic gratings having the shape of converging-diverging channel (CDC) give an extra degree of freedom to exhibit enhanced transmission resonances. By varying the gap size at the throat of CDC, the spectral locations of the transmission resonance bands can be shifted close to each other and have high transmittance in a very narrow energy band. Hence, the CDC shape metallic gratings can lead to almost perfect transmittance for any desired wavelength by carefully optimizing the metallic material, gap at the throat of CDC, and grating parameters. In addition, a cavity surrounded by the CDC shaped metallic grating and a one-dimensional (1D) photonic crystal (PhC) can lead to an enhanced emission with properties similar to a laser. The large coherence length of the emission is achieved by exploiting the coherence properties of the surface waves on the gratings and PhC. The new multilayer structure can attain the spectral and directional control of emission with onlyp-polarization. The resonance condition inside the cavity is extremely sensitive to the wavelength, which would then lead to high emission in a very narrow wavelength band. Such simple 1D multilayer structure should be easy to fabricate and have applications in photonic circuits, thermophotovoltaics, and potentially in energy efficient incandescent sources.

Abstract:Recently, there has been an increased interest in studying extraordinary optical transmission (EOT) through subwavelength aperture arrays perforated in a metallic film. In this Letter, we report that the transmission of an incident acoustic wave through a one-dimensional acoustic grating can also be drastically enhanced. This extraordinary acoustic transmission (EAT) has been investigated both theoretically and experimentally, showing that the coupling between the diffractive wave and the wave-guide mode plays an important role in EAT. This phenomenon can have potential applications in acoustics and also might provide a better understanding of EOT in optical subwavelength systems.

Abstract:Based on the rigorous coupled-wave analysis algorithm, we have systematically analysed the effect of the geometrical parameters of a dielectric film coated metallic grating with subwavelength slits on extraordinary optical trans-mission for s-polarization illumination. Results show that the dielectric film which sustains a waveguide electromagnetic mode on the top of the metallic lamellar grating can strongly enhance the transmittance, the positions of the transmission peaks are mainly deter-mined by the period of the metallic grating, the thickness and refractive index of the dielectric film. This structure shows potential applications in excellent polarizers or polarization-isotropic devices at infrared spectral range by appropriately choosing the geometrical parameters.

Abstract:The unique characteristics of surface plasmon coupled emission (SPCE) made it useful for potential applications in the fields of plasmonic optics and biological sensing. However, the mechanism of SPCE is still under debate. We studied the time-resolved fluorescence anisotropy of SPCE excluding the interference of absorption-enhancement effect by the time-correlated single-photon counting (TCSPC) setups. The value of anisotropy at SPCE peak kept constant at -0.45 during the whole relaxation process, which is in agreement with the calculated value. Our work presented a further step toward the understanding of SPCE.
An efficient low-density grating setup for monochromatization of XUV ultrafast light sources

Abstract:Ultrafast light sources have become an indispensable tool to access and understand transient phenomenon in material science. However, a simple and easy-to-implement method for harmonic selection, with high transmission efficiency and pulse duration conservation, is still a challenge. Here we showcase and compare two approaches for selecting the desired harmonic from a high harmonic generation source while achieving the above goals. The first approach is the combination of extreme ultraviolet spherical mirrors with transmission filters and the second approach uses a normal-incidence spherical grating. Both solutions target time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy with photon energies in the 10-20 eV range but are relevant for other experimental techniques as well. The two approaches for harmonic selection are characterized in terms of focusing quality, efficiency, and temporal broadening. It is demonstrated that a focusing grating is able to provide much higher transmission as compared to the mirror+filter approach (3.3 times higher for 10.8 eV and 12.9 times higher for 18.1 eV), with only a slight temporal broadening (6.8% increase) and a somewhat larger spot size (~30% increase). Overall, our study establishes an experimental perspective on the trade-off between a single grating normal incidence monochromator design and the use of filters. As such, it provides a basis for selecting the most appropriate approach in various fields where an easy-to-implement harmonic selection from high harmonic generation is needed.

Abstract:Anomalous optical transmission phenomena have ever been discovered in various metamaterials, which can be modulated more easily in Photonic crystals (PhCs). Compared with the regular PhCs composed of round rods closely packed in air, the equal frequency contours (EFC) of honeycomb lattice PhCs constituted by trigonal rods are more rounded and more suitable to realize the all-angle left-handed negative refraction (AALNR) in the low band region. Due to the hex EFC distribution, the regular PhC can be applied in the optical collimator design. In the higher band regions, the more complicated refraction behaviors can be excited based on the intricate undulation of one band or the overlap of different bands in PhCs. These unique features will provide us with more understanding of electromagnetic wave propagation in PhCs and give important guideline for the design of new type optical devices.

Instrumentation and Methods for Astrophysics

Abstract:Massively multiplexed spectroscopic stellar surveys such as MSE present enormous challenges in the spectrograph design. The combination of high multiplex, large telescope aperture, high resolution (R~40,000) and natural seeing implies that multiple spectrographs with large beam sizes, large grating angles, and fast camera speeds are required, with high cost and risk. An attractive option to reduce the beam size is to use Bragg-type gratings at much higher angles than hitherto considered. As well as reducing the spectrograph size and cost, this also allows the possibility of very high efficiency due to a close match of s and p-polarization Bragg efficiency peaks. The grating itself could be a VPH grating, but Surface Relief (SR) gratings offer an increasingly attractive alternative, with higher maximum line density and better bandwidth. In either case, the grating needs to be immersed within large prisms to get the light to and from the grating at the required angles. We present grating designs and nominal spectrograph designs showing the efficiency gains and size reductions such gratings might allow for the MSE high resolution spectrograph.
Anomalous Near-Perfect Extraordinary Optical Absorption on Subwavelength Thin Metal Film Grating

Abstract:We demonstrate analytically and numerically that the anomalous extraordinary optical absorption through thin metal grating with air slit arrays can be excited simultaneously by long and short range surface plasmonic modes supported on the surfaces of thin metal film in weak coupling while this absorption can only be excited by short range surface plasmonic mode in strong coupling. In particular, we predict localized plasmonic mode inside air slits holding double-effect to generate the anomalous extraordinary optical absorption when only this mode is present and to suppress this absorption when the pathways excited by localized and surface plasmonic modes are present simultaneously. Furthermore, we present that double-layer metal grating consisting of two identical single-layer metal gratings can be exploited to enhance absorption efficiency more than 99% and 90% for excited localized plasmonic modes and surface plasmonic modes respectively.
Rigorous analysis of extremely asymmetrical scattering of electromagnetic waves in slanted periodic gratings

Abstract:Extremely asymmetrical scattering (EAS) is a new type of Bragg scattering in thick, slanted, periodic gratings. It is realised when the scattered wave propagates parallel to the front boundary of the grating. Its most important feature is the strong resonant increase in the scattered wave amplitude compared to the amplitude of the incident wave: the smaller the grating amplitude, the larger the amplitude of the scattered wave. In this paper, rigorous numerical analysis of EAS is carried out by means of the enhanced T-matrix algorithm. This includes investigation of harmonic generation inside and outside the grating, unusually strong edge effects, fast oscillations of the incident wave amplitude in the grating, etc. Comparison with the previously developed approximate theory is carried out. In particular, it is demonstrated that the applicability conditions for the two-wave approximation in the case of EAS are noticeably more restrictive than those for the conventional Bragg scattering. At the same time, it is shown that the approximate theory is usually highly accurate in terms of description of EAS in the most interesting cases of scattering with strong resonant increase of the scattered wave amplitude. Physical explanation of the predicted effects is presented.
High-Efficiency Broadband Anomalous Reflection by Gradient Meta-Surfaces

Abstract:We combine theory and experiment to demonstrate that a carefully designed gradient meta-surface supports high-efficiency anomalous reflections for near-infrared light following the generalized Snell's law, and the reflected wave becomes a bounded surface wave as the incident angle exceeds a critical value. Compared to previously fabricated gradient meta-surfaces in infrared regime, our samples work in a shorter wavelength regime with a broad bandwidth (750-900 nm), exhibit a much higher conversion efficiency (similar to 80%) to the anomalous reflection mode at normal incidence, and keep light polarization unchanged after the anomalous reflection. Finite-difference-time-domain (FDTD) simulations are in excellent agreement with experiments. Our findings may lead to many interesting applications, such as antireflection coating, polarization and spectral beam splitters, high-efficiency light absorbers, and surface plasmon couplers.

Abstract:We present a specialized scatterometry method to measure the groove profiles of highly asymmetric triangular gratings. Compared with the conventional scatterometry working in a specular way, this method utilizes diffraction spectra of the reflected ±1st orders and is good at measuring this kind of asymmetric grating with a higher sensitivity. In our work, diffraction efficiency angular spectra at a single wavelength are measured and passed on to a parameter optimization process to retrieve three profile defining parameters. Final results are compared with the ones from an atomic force microscope and discrepancies are discussed and explained.
