Abstract:An asymmetric long period grating with period grooves is chemically etched. Experimental results show that though the grooves are ablated, the period structure still remains. Analysis is given to explain the related mechanism.

Abstract:The spectral characteristics of a long period fiber grating is analyzed by using the coupled mode theory.The influences of various structural features such as the apodize,chirp and average refractive index to the spectral characteristics are studied numerically with a transfer matrix method.The results and conclusions are useful for optimal design of long period fiber gratings.

Abstract:The mechanically-induced long period fiber grating(LPFG) is formed by pressing a single mode fiber from double sides with two identical periodically grooved plates.The polarization dependent loss(PDL)of the LPFG is investigated experimentally,together with effects of the spacing period of the grooved plates and the pressure on the transmission spectrum.The results show that the characteristics of the LPFG can be modified by adjusting the pressure and a peak transmission loss of 24.6 dB has been achieved.A maximum PDL of 7.42 dB at 1 551.9 nm for LP13 cladding mode and the resonance wavelength separation of 1.9 nm are measured,which are superior to the inscription of a LPFG in a side-hole single mode fiber with a similar fabrication method.

Abstract:Laser scattering method as a non-contact method provides an opportunity to real-time monitor the evolution of periodic nanostructures during fabrication, e.g. when the surface is irradiated with a focused ion beam. Using the method, the diffraction angle needs calibrating according to the grating equation. In this paper, we used scalar analysis to demonstrate the use of a dual-period structure for formation of dual spectral peaks at the 1st diffraction order. We then made use of numerical study based on rigorous coupled-wave analysis to optimize these Al-grating structures in terms of depth. It is found that dual-peak wavelengths can be selected by using different angles of incidence and low-loss reflection is obtained using an optimized structure. It is further proposed that these wavelengths can be used to determine the diffraction angle during fabrication without the need for pre-calibration of an optical scattering system.

Abstract:We present a simple, and robust method for writing long period fiber gratings with low polarization dependent losses. Our method is based on utilizing mechanical vibrations of the tapered fiber while pooling it. Our method enables real-time tunability of the periodicity, efficiency and length of the grating. We also demonstrate complex grating by writing multiple gratings simultaneously. Finally, we utilized the formation of the gratings in different fiber diameters to investigate the Young's modulus of the fiber.

Abstract:The rectangular gratings with micron or submicron period were developed by using electron lithography and ion itching techniques. Their diffractive performances were studied. The experimental results show that when the period of grating is approaching to the incident wavelength, the diffractive angular spectra exhibit the electromagnetic vector characteristic.

Abstract:Asymmetric transverse-load characteristics and the polarization dependence of long-period fiber gratings (LPFGs) written by high-frequency CO2 laser pulses are investigated in detail. It is demonstrated that the resonant wavelength is dependent on the direction of the applied force and on the polarization state of the input light; however, the coupling strength is independent of these parameters. When a transverse load is applied along different orientations of the LPFG, the resonant wavelength may be shifted toward the longer wavelength, the shorter wavelength, or hardly shifted, whereas the absolute value of peak transmission attenuation is linearly decreased with an increase of the applied transverse load, with almost no sensitivity to the load direction. These unique transverse-load characteristics and the polarization dependence are due to the load-induced birefringence that leads to the rotation of optical principal axes in the LPFG. Abstract:A new ultra-long period fiber grating constructed by a series of up tapers is proposed and demonstrated experimentally. A fiber grating with length of 2mm is fabricated by cascading three up-tapers on a single mode fiber, which is the shortest ultra-long period fiber grating up to now. The effect of periodic error is greatly reduced due to the ultra-long grating pitch. The fabrication repeatability is greatly improved by adopting semi-automated fabrication techniques. Strain and temperature are identified simultaneously by tracing the change of resonant wavelength and attenuation peak amplitude with a resolution of $6.2~mu varepsilon $ and 0.2°C, respectively.

Abstract:An asymmetric long period fiber grating (LPFG) with a large attenuation of −47.39dB and a low insertion loss of 0.34dB is fabricated by use of focused CO2 laser beam to carve periodic grooves on one side of the optical fiber. Such periodic grooves and the stretch-induced periodic microbends can effectively enhance the refractive index modulation and increase the average strain sensitivity of the resonant wavelength of the LPFG to −102.89nm∕mε. The resonant wavelength and the peak attenuation of the LPFG can be tuned by ∼12nm and ∼20dB, respectively, by the application of a stretching force.

Abstract:Two identical long-period fiber gratings (LPFGs) are difficult to produce in practice, notably for CO(2)-laser or arc-discharge induced LPFGs. So it is meaningful to study the spectrum evolution of cascaded LPFGs with some deviation, named "mismatching" LPFGs. Theory and experiment demonstrate that the upper envelope of the fringe pattern is intrinsically curved but less dramatically than the lower envelope. Bending the grating pair to introduce proper cladding-mode loss can improve the contrast of the fringe pattern at a desired wavelength, which indicates that cascaded mismatching LPFGs can be used as high-quality comb filters or fiber sensors.

Abstract:Long-period fiber gratings (LPFGs) functioning as band-reject filters have played a pivotal role in the realm of optical communication. Since their initial documentation in 1996, LPFGs have witnessed rapid advancements in areas such as optical sensing, the equalization of optical amplification, and optical band-pass filtering, etc. The unique attributes of optical fiber-based grating, including their miniaturized size, cost-effectiveness, and immunity to electromagnetic interference, have contributed significantly to various sectors over the last two decades. This paper presents a review of the evolution of LPFGs, with a specific focus on the progression and current trends of mechanically induced long-period fiber gratings. It offers a concise overview of coupled-mode theory, the fabrication processes, the merits, and the limitations associated with mechanically induced LPFGs. Moreover, this review elucidates the application methodologies of mechanically induced LPFGs and anticipates future directions in this field.

Abstract:Femtosecond laser pulses with ultrashort time duration and ultrahigh peak power can cause the refractive index change in transparent materials and micron scale machining precision. Long period fiber gratings (LPFGs) with different periods and different grating lengths in the standard single mode fiber were fabricated, using laser direct writing method, by femtosecond laser pulses with pulse width of 200 fs at a center wavelength of 800 nm in air. The transmission spectra were studied in the range of 1510 nm to 1610 nm. Two LPFGs with period of 400 μm, and 550 μm, respectively fabricated with same irradiation power of 275 mW, were shown. The loss peak of 1552 nm, the transmission loss of 16 dB and the FWHM of 20 nm were obtained when the period of LPFG was 400 μm, while the loss peak of 1588 nm, the transmission loss of 20 dB and the FWHM of 25 nm were achieved when the period of LPFG was 550 μm. According to the theory of mode field coupling for long period grating, it was indicated that the modulation of refractive index Δn was in the level of 10 -2 .

Abstract:Abstract To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to propose and verify a novel and simple direct inscription method for long-period fibre gratings (LPFGs) with an arbitrary grating period using a sinusoidal intensity modulated femtosecond laser. This method induces a sine refractive index modulation, which makes the LPFGs have no higher-order harmonic resonance that exists in the normal square-wave modulation method. This is beneficial for reducing the insertion loss of the LPFGs and optimising the transmission spectrum. Using this method, we also conveniently realise the inscription of superimposed, apodised, and chirped LPFGs. This work presents a simple but effective inscription scheme for various types of LPFGs using a femtosecond laser.

Abstract:Long-period fiber grating(LPFG) written by high frequency CO_2 laser pulses in panda polarization maintaining fiber was proposed, and its polarization characteristic was generally studied by experiments.The experiment results show that the resonant amplitude of LPFG changes periodically with a period of π when the polarization angle of incident elliptical polarization light varies from 0 to 2π.The amplitude change directions of two adjacent resonants were opposite with a phase difference of π and the amplitude difference of them in the same incident polarization angle varied periodically as a zigzag wave also with a period of π.The resonant wavelengths of LPFG hardly varied when there was no mode disturbs. Based on mode couple theory,the experiment results were explained qualitatively in this paper.

Abstract:The use of near infrared, high intensity femtosecond laser pulses for the inscription of long period fiber gratings in photonic crystal fiber is reported. The formation of grating structures in photonic crystal fiber is complicated by the fiber structure that allows wave-guidance but that impairs and scatters the femtosecond inscription beam. The effects of symmetric and asymmetric femtosecond laser inscriptions are compared and the polarization characteristics of long period gratings and their responses to external perturbations are reported.

Abstract:The influence of diffraction of subwavelength relief grating on antireflection and transmission performance is investigated.Theoretical analysis shows that,for achieving both effects of antireflection and transmission enhancement,the period of grating must be small enough to eliminate the lateral waveguide loss caused by diffraction.In order to achieve antireflection effect only,the lateral waveguide caused by grating diffraction can be full used to reduce the reflectivity.Small grating period is not required at this point.The effects of period,duty cycle and groove depth of one dimensional relief gratings on reflectivity are investigated with the method of rigorous coupled-wave theory.A one-dimensional relief grating with period of 290 nm is fabricated by two-beam interference method.Experimental results show that it has significant antireflection effect in the whole visible light wave band and wide angular range,but this effect is only reflected in the non-diffraction region.The fabrication difficulty can be reduced greatly by choosing a reasonable grating periods according to the applications,which plays a positive role in using subwavelength gratings more economically.

Abstract:We study here the spectral characteristics of square-wave-modulated type II long-period fiber gratings (LPFGs) inscribed by a femtosecond laser. Both theoretical and experimental results indicate that higher-order harmonics refractive index (RI) modulation commonly exists together with the fundamental harmonic RI modulation in such LPFGs, and the duty cycle of a square wave has a great influence on the number and amplitudes of higher-order harmonics. A linear increase in the duty cycle in a series of square wave pulses will induce another LPFG with a minor difference in periods, which is useful for expanding the bandwidth of LPFGs. We also propose a method to reduce insertion loss by fabricating type II LPFGs without higher-order harmonic resonances. This work intensifies our comprehension of type II fiber gratings with which novel optical fiber sensors can be fabricated.

Abstract:A novel ultra-long-period fiber grating with periods up to several millimeters induced by using CO2 laser pulses is reported and discussed based on the mode coupling theory. The refractive index change occurs mainly within the cladding area of the fiber and has an unsymmetrical distribution on the cross-section of the ULPFG. The characteristics of temperature, strain, torsion and the effect of the refractive index of environment were investigated in theory and by experiment. The experimental results showed that different resonant peaks of the ULPFG have different sensitivities in the characteristics above mentioned, which offers possible applications in optical communications and sensing.
