What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper attempts to address two main issues: 1. **Metal Resource Recycling and Utilization**: The paper proposes a method to efficiently recover metal ions such as Nickel (Ni), Cobalt (Co), and Manganese (Mn) directly from waste lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) through a boronization process. This process not only achieves high efficiency in metal resource recovery (with recovery rates of 99.91%, 99.92%, and 99.84% respectively) but also converts these metal ions into highly efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts. 2. **Development of Efficient OER Catalysts**: The mixed metal borides (NiCoMnBs) prepared by the aforementioned method, when used as OER catalysts, exhibit excellent catalytic performance. Specifically, the catalyst can achieve high current density at relatively low overpotentials, such as driving a high current density of 500 mA cm⁻² with an overpotential of only 372 mV. This performance surpasses that of many other single-metal, bimetallic, or trimetallic OER catalysts, including commercial RuO₂ catalysts. In summary, this research aims to address the issues of metal resource scarcity and clean energy by developing a simple and environmentally friendly method to recycle metal resources from waste lithium-ion batteries and convert them into efficient energy conversion catalysts. This method not only facilitates resource recycling but also promotes the development of sustainable energy.
