Abstract:The Gate-Rudder System (GRS) has been analysed within EU-project CHEK for a Kamsarmax bulker. Full scale CFD simulations have been made for two rudder configurations. Besides the conventional straight sailing conditions, the scope of simulations has been extended with rudder steering actions, vessel drift and turning. The forces in surge direction of the Gate-Rudder System are different in magnitude and trend compared to the reference rudder, whilst generating comparable sway-force and yaw-moment. Propeller loading is influenced by vessel drift and turning. This trend has been confirmed with additional CFD runs with a mirrored propeller. The vessel motions create a pre-rotation of the flow to the propeller, which influences the loading of the propeller when running at constant RPM, and therefore it affects the overall performance of the vessel. The findings indicate that the conventional performance evaluation of straight-sailing in calm water will not identify all actual performance aspects of the hull-propeller-rudder design and its interactions, which are required for the coming Carbon Intensity Index (CII) regulations.
