Abstract:The mechanism of Te infiltration and destruction on the surface of nickel-based superalloys has been widely focused on, while underlying mechanism of Te infiltration process is still lacked. In this paper, the dynamic microwave thermal shock (DMTS) method is firstly proposed to investigate the infiltration and damage mechanism of Te on the surface of Inconel 718. Rapid heating rates (25°C/min, 50°C/min and 100°C/min) are set to achieve the highest temperature of 1000°C. Typical delamination phenomenon, P-R-P-R (Poor Cr - Rich Cr - Poor Cr - Rich Cr) distribution of element Cr, the nucleation of pure Te during cooling and the migration of polymetallic elements to the surface are observed. The material composition in each layer and the analysis of element distribution verifies the hypothesis that multi-element co-bias including both inward diffusion of Te and outward diffusion of other metallic elements is the contribution of Te infiltration. The grain boundary embrittlement and ridge-up phenomenon caused by Te are mainly the superimposed effect of geometrical and physical factors of the two tellurides (Cr3Te4 and NiNbTe2). This paper provides new perspectives and insights for a better understanding of the mechanism of Te infiltration into nickel-based superalloys.
