Abstract:A novel as-cast Al0.7CoCrFeNiTi0.3 high entropy alloy was prepared by vacuum arc melting and its microstructure and compression properties were investigated. The alloy has an excellent combination of high strength and large plasticity. The yield strength, fracture strength and compressive plasticity of the alloy at room temperature were as high as 1438 MPa, 2990 MPa, and 37.7%, respectively. The alloy was composed of alternating nano-scale face center cubic (FCC), body center cubic (BCC) and ordered L21 phase. The excellent mechanical properties of the alloy are attributed to the combination of the soft FCC phase and the hard BCC/L21 phase. In addition, the large number of phase interfaces provided by the nano-scale lamellar microstructure and precipitated ordered phase also produce a strengthening effect. The fracture mechanism of the alloy is mainly performed at compound fracture mode.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem this paper attempts to address is how to achieve a combination of high strength and good ductility by designing and preparing a novel high-entropy alloy (Al0.7CoCrFeNiTi0.3). Specifically, the researchers aim to form a nano-lamellar eutectic microstructure composed of face-centered cubic (FCC), body-centered cubic (BCC), and ordered L21 phases by adding appropriate amounts of Al and Ti to the CoCrFeNi high-entropy alloy, thereby obtaining an alloy with excellent compressive properties. ### Main Issues: 1. **How to achieve high strength and high ductility in high-entropy alloys**: Single-phase high-entropy alloys usually find it difficult to possess both high strength and high ductility simultaneously. The researchers hope to solve this problem through a multi-phase composite structure. 2. **Effect of microstructure on mechanical properties**: The researchers aim to explore the specific impact of the combination of different phases (FCC, BCC, L21) and their microstructure on the mechanical properties of the alloy. 3. **Strengthening mechanisms**: The researchers hope to understand the strengthening mechanisms of this novel high-entropy alloy, including solid solution strengthening, phase boundary strengthening, etc. ### Research Methods: - **Alloy Preparation**: The Al0.7CoCrFeNiTi0.3 high-entropy alloy was prepared by vacuum arc melting. - **Microstructure Characterization**: The microstructure of the alloy was characterized in detail using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). - **Mechanical Property Testing**: The mechanical properties of the alloy, such as yield strength, fracture strength, and compressive ductility, were tested through compression experiments. ### Main Findings: - **Microstructure**: The alloy consists of alternating nano-scale FCC, BCC, and L21 phases, forming a near-eutectic microstructure. - **Mechanical Properties**: At room temperature, the alloy exhibits a yield strength of 1438 MPa, a fracture strength of 2990 MPa, and a compressive ductility of 37.7%. - **Strengthening Mechanisms**: The excellent mechanical properties of the alloy are mainly attributed to the composite effect of the soft FCC phase and the hard BCC/L21 phases, as well as the numerous phase boundaries provided by the nano-lamellar eutectic microstructure, which inhibit dislocation motion and produce a strengthening effect. ### Conclusion: Through rational design and preparation, the researchers successfully prepared a novel Al0.7CoCrFeNiTi0.3 high-entropy alloy, which exhibits excellent compressive properties at room temperature, with mechanical properties superior to most reported high-entropy alloys. This research provides new insights for the development of high-performance high-entropy alloys.
