Abstract:Due to the shortage of global freshwater resources and sufficient seawater resources, electrolysis of seawater has become a research hotspot. However, the presence of chloride ions in seawater greatly hinders the development of seawater electrolysis, therefore, constructing catalyst with high catalytic activity and stability against chloride corrosion is essential for seawater electrolysis. In this work, we synthesize F doped FeP and CoP nanosheets with P vacancies (F-FeCoP v @IF) by rapidly molten salt and gas-phase phosphorization strategy, which displays bifunctional activity for HER and OER in alkaline seawater. And the assembled F-FeCoP v @IF needs 1.94 V and 1.62 V to drive 1000 mA cm -2 for overall seawater splitting in alkaline seawater and simulated industrial seawater. And the F-FeCoP v @IF has outstanding long-term durability for over 100 hours and nearly 100% FE. DFT calculations reveal that F-doping and P vacancies can synergistically modulate the electronic structure of FeCoP, which enable F-FeCoP v @IF serve as excellent bifunctional electrocatalyst.

Abstract:Water electrolysis is considered one of the major sources of green hydrogen as the fuel of the future. However, due to limited freshwater resources, more interest has been geared toward seawater electrolysis for hydrogen production. The development of effective and selective electrocatalysts from earth-abundant elements for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) as the bottleneck for seawater electrolysis is highly desirable. This work introduces novel Pd-doped Co nanoparticles encapsulated in graphite carbon shell electrode (Pd-doped CoNPs@C shell) as a highly active OER electrocatalyst towards alkaline seawater oxidation, which outperforms the state-of-the-art catalyst, RuO2. Significantly, Pd-doped CoNPs@C shell electrode exhibiting low OER overpotential of ≈213, ≈372, and ≈ 429 mV at 10, 50, and 100 mA/cm2, respectively together with a small Tafel slope of ≈ 120 mV/dec than pure Co@C and Pd@C electrode in alkaline seawater media. The high catalytic activity at the aforementioned current density reveals decent selectivity, thus obviating the evolution of chloride reaction (CER), i.e., ∼490 mV, as competitive to the OER. Results indicated that Pd-doped Co nanoparticles encapsulated in graphite carbon shell (Pd-doped CoNPs@C electrode) could be a very promising candidate for seawater electrolysis.

Abstract:Seawater electrolysis under alkaline conditions presents an attractive alternative to traditional freshwater electrolysis for mass sustainable high-purity hydrogen production. However, the lack of active and robust electrocatalysts severely impedes the industrial application of this technology. Herein, carbon-doped nanoporous cobalt phosphide (C-Co2P) prepared by electrochemical dealloying is reported as an electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The C-Co2P achieves an overpotential of 30 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm−2 in 1 m KOH, along with impressive catalytic activity and stability at large current densities in artificial alkaline seawater electrolyte containing mixed chlorides of NaCl, MgCl2, and CaCl2. Experimental analysis and density functional theory calculations reveal that the C atom with strong electronegativity and small atomic radius can tailor the electronic structure of Co2P, leading to weakened Co–H bonding toward promoted HER kinetics. Moreover, the C doping introduces a two-stepped H delivery pathway by forming C–Had intermediate, thus reducing the energy barrier of water dissociation. This study offers a new vision toward the development of seawater electrolysis for large-scale hydrogen production.

Abstract:Developing efficient and durable oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts holds great promise for green hydrogen production via seawater electrolysis, but remains a challenge. Herein, we report a Co-doped Ni 3 S 2 nanosheet array on Ni foam (Co-Ni 3 S 2 /NF) as a high-efficiency OER electrocatalyst for seawater. In alkaline conditions, Co-Ni 3 S 2 /NF requires an overpotential of only 368 mV to drive 100 mA·cm −2 , superior to Ni 3 S 2 /NF (385 mV). Besides, it exhibits at least 50-h continuous electrolysis.

Abstract:The shortage of pure-water and high-energy consumption of low-grade water treatments force the development of direct seawater-electrolysis. Herein, experiments and calculations reveal the redistribution of electron density due to doping and vacancy defects, and confirm the contribution of multiple active sites to the dissociation and desorption of water with favorable thermodynamics. The Co/Ni-doped defect-rich Cu-based oxides (CNC-MO) nanoarrays promote water dissociation and hydrogen desorption via bonding with ⁎OH and ⁎H respectively, thus accelerating hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The Ni/Co-doped defect-rich Cu-based sulfides (CNC-MS) nanorods modulate the adsorption state of ⁎OH while effectively adsorbing and isolating ⁎H to improve the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) kinetics. Asymmetric electrodes can achieve alkaline seawater electrolysis with 100 mA cm-2 at a voltage of 1.61 V. The corrosion resistance, high efficiency, and selectivity of electrodes can remain stable for 1200 hours in a saline-alkali medium, and then gradually decline with sites blocking and deep corrosion. The aim of this work is to propose design strategies for the construction of high-performance electrocatalysts for seawater splitting while balancing multiple factors such as cost, efficiency, and durability.

Abstract:The development of active and robust oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts in alkaline media is of great value for high-efficiency hydrogen production through electrochemical water electrolysis. Heteroatom-doping and defect-introduction are critical strategies in activating OER electrocatalysts. Herein, a combined magnetron sputtering, Co–Ga alloying, dealloying and selenization strategy was adopted to realize Ga-doped CoSe2 nanosheets with enriched oxygen vacancies supported on stainless steel mesh (SSM) for OER. The as-obtained L-CoSe2/SSM exhibits remarkable OER performances with an ultralow overpotential of 227 mV at 10 mA cm−2, and small Tafel slope of 49.15 mV dec−1 in 1 M KOH. In addition, the catalyst displays negligible activity decay after more than 25 h of continuous operation. The enhanced OER performances of the L-CoSe2/SSM can be rationalized by plentiful oxygen vacancies, Ga doping, unique roughened nanosheets structure and substrate (SSM). The findings provide promising and controllable synthetic strategy for low-cost CoSe2 based electrocatalyst toward practical applications of water electrolysis.

Abstract:The development of highly efficient, long-lasting, and earth-rich electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution processes (HER) is crucial to the advancement of hydrogen energy. Due to its improved catalytic activity, extraordinary chemical stability, and low cost, pyrite cobalt selenide (CoSe2) has become an incredibly potential replacement for Pt-based HER electrocatalysts. However, because of limited hydrogen adsorption and accompanying restrictions in its electronic structure, its practical application has run into difficulties. Herein, we have introduced aluminum (Al) into CoSe2/CC nanowire arrays on carbon cloth using a simple hydrothermal and selenization method. The synthesized materials serve as highly effective catalysts for HER, with the optimized Al-CoSe2/CC demonstrating a significantly overpotential reduced by nearly 90 mV compared to pure CoSe2/CC (from 243 mV to 153 mV) at a current density at 10 mA cm−2 and a small Tafel slope of 88 mV dec−1. Moreover, these catalysts exhibit exceptional durability, sustaining their performance for 24 h. Based on the experimental results and subsequent density functional theory (DFT) calculations, it has been demonstrated that Al doping can significantly enhance the electronic conductivity, maximize the hydrogen evolution adsorption energy, and improve the charge transfer ability. This work offers a profound insight into the correlation between cation substitution in non-precious metal-based catalysts and the enhancement of intrinsic HER catalytic performance.

Abstract:Seawater electrolysis is a promising approach to large-scale hydrogen production, offering a sustainable path toward a greener energy landscape, yet requires a highly active, stable, and selective electrocatalyst. We present the modification of NiFe-LDH by Li-ion doping and hybridization with g -C 3 N 4 and demonstrate enhanced catalytic activity and selectivity toward oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Li-ion doping increases surficial Ni 3+ sites and oxygen defects, facilitating the formation of a built-in electric field at the interface with g -C 3 N 4 and preferential absorption of OH − . The Li-doped NiFe-LDH/ g -C 3 N 4 achieves a current density of 100 mA cm −2 at low overpotentials of 276 and 319 mV in 1 M KOH and 1 M KOH seawater, respectively, with high OER selectivity (Faradaic efficiency = 96.7 %) and durability (100 h at 200 mA cm −2 ). This work demonstrates the effective combination of alkaline cation doping and heterointerface for designing low-cost, stable, and efficient catalysts with good selectivity for seawater electrolysis.

Abstract:Transition metal selenides with pyrite cubic phase structure have attracted much attention in the field of electrochemistry, for their low resistivity properties (<10−3 Ω cm) of Pauli paramagnetic metals. In view of the multi-step catalytic reaction in electrocatalytic oxygen evolution, NiSe2 and CoSe2 with the same crystallographic space group are selected to construct NiSe2/CoSe2 nanosheet arrays on carbon cloth by a facile layered double hydroxides (LDHs) selenization derived method. Moreover, the effect of phosphorus doping on electronic structure and electrocatalytic activity of NiSe2/CoSe2 is also investigated. When the mole ratio of phosphorus to selenium is 10%, the prepared phosphorus-doped NiSe2/CoSe2 nanosheet arrays (10%P-NiSe2/CoSe2) show superior oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance in alkaline media. It exhibits a small overpotential of 287 mV to realize a current density of 50 mA cm−2 and a low Tafel slope of 68 mv dec−1 in 1 M KOH solution. Furthermore, the cyclic stability test displays that the current density of 10%P-NiSe2/CoSe2 only decreases from 30.0 to 26.5 mA cm−2, after 12 h of continuous water oxidation reaction at 270 mV overpotential. The excellent OER activity of 10%P-NiSe2/CoSe2 can be attributed to the changes in charge density on the crystal surface and the lattice distortion in crystal caused by phosphorus doping. Our work provides an efficient approach for designing OER electrocatalysts through a LDHs derivation assembling with an anion doping method.

Abstract:Abstract The introduction of high‐valence state elements and highly active species is promisingly desired to design superior electrocatalysts for water electrolysis. Exploring scalable synthetic strategies is necessary for an in‐depth understanding of the mechanism of improving electrocatalytic performance. But it remains challenging. Herein, several electrocatalysts through element doping are prepared. The obtained Mo‐CoP 3 ‐2@FeOOH samples show the overpotentials (OER) of 232 mV (alkaline seawater) and 262 mV (KOH electrolyte). As HER catalyst, it also presents an excellent electrocatalytic performance. The above electrocatalysts are utilized as anode/cathode to assemble devices for alkaline seawater/water electrolysis, which delivers a cell voltage of 1.58 V and durability of 350 h. Density functional theory calculations reveal that Mo ion doping and FeOOH significantly enhance the density states of the Fermi level and tune the position of the d‐band center. It expedites the charge transfer and decreases the adsorption energy of intermediates. It demonstrates that transition‐metal phosphides coated with highly active FeOOH offer an effective route to fabricate high‐performance and durable catalysts for seawater/water electrolysis.

Abstract:Electrolysis of seawater makes full use of this natural resource and continuously turns it into a clean fuel, hydrogen. Electrocatalysts for seawater electrolysis must maintain a steady-state operation without suffering from chloride corrosion. In this study, we report a three-dimensional structure metal phosphide electrocatalyst by depositing cobalt-doped Fe2P (Co-Fe2P) on Ni foam. Density functional theory calculations showed that Co-Fe2P was beneficial for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) because of its suitable H* adsorption. Thus, the as-prepared Co-Fe2P acted as an efficient bifunctional electrocatalyst, exhibiting enhanced electrocatalytic properties for both the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and HER. Moreover, the simulated alkaline seawater was used to determine the optimum potential (1.69 V at 100 mA cm-2) required for seawater splitting using the as-synthesized electrocatalyst. This study proposes a novel material for electrocatalytic application.

Abstract:Hydrogen (H2) production from direct seawater electrolysis is an economically appealing yet fundamentally and technically challenging approach to harvest clean energy. The current seawater electrolysis technology is significantly hindered by the poor stability and low selectivity of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) due to the competition with chlorine evolution reaction in practical application. Herein, iron and phosphor dual-doped nickel selenide nanoporous films (Fe,P-NiSe2 NFs) are rationally designed as bifunctional catalysts for high-efficiency direct seawater electrolysis. The doping of Fe cation increases the selectivity and Faraday efficiency (FE) of the OER. While the doping of P anions improves the electronic conductivity and prevents the dissolution of selenide by forming a passivation layer containing P–O species. The Fe-dopant is identified as the primary active site for the hydrogen evolution reaction, and meanwhile, stimulates the adjacent Ni atoms as active centers for the OER. The experimental analyses and theoretical calculations provide an insightful understanding of the roles of dual-dopants in boosting seawater electrolysis. As a result, a current density of 0.8 A cm−2 is archived at 1.8 V with high OER selectivity and long-term stability for over 200 h, which surpasses the benchmarking platinum-group-metals-free electrolyzers.

Abstract:Hydrogen production employing seawater electrolysis is a sustainable strategy for future energy prospects. This study reports high-performance bifunctional water (seawater) electrocatalyst by designing 3-D heterostructured MnCo/NiSe/NF. MnCo/NiSe is concurrently highly energetic toward HER (22.1, 182.8, and 211.6 mV in alkaline water and 31.4, 216.3, and 270.1 mV in alkaline seawater to touch current densities of −10, −500, and −1000 mA cm -2 , respectively) and OER (225.8, 340.4, and 370.7 in alkaline water and 261.3, 419.4, and 460.2 mV in alkaline seawater to attain 10, 500, and 1000 mA cm -2 , respectively). Interestingly, with cell voltages of 1.41, 1.67, 1.88, and 1.92 V in 1.0 M KOH and 1.44. 1.82, 1.99, and 2.11 V in 1.0 M KOH + seawater to run 10, 100, 500, and 1000 mA cm -2 , respectively. DFT based modeling rationalizes our experiments and indicates the synergistic effects between MnCo and NiSe in their complex.

Abstract:Regulation of chemical composition and nanostructure, such as the introduction of dopant into two-dimensional nanomaterials, is a general and valid strategy for the efficient electrocatalyst design. In this work, Co4S3/Co9S8 nanosheets, with an ultrathin layer structure, were successfully synthesized via an efficient solvothermal process combined with ultrasonic exfoliation. Different metal ions (M = Fe3+, Cr3+, Mn2+ and Ni2+) were then doped by a simple cation exchange method and the effects of different dopants on the OER activities of Co4S3/Co9S8 NS were further investigated in alkaline media. The corresponding results implied that M-doped Co4S3/Co9S8 NS (M = Fe3+, Cr3+, Mn2+ and Ni2+) exhibited different electrocatalytic properties. Evidenced by XPS spectra, the different OER activities were mainly aroused by the redistribution of charge at the interface due to an electronic interaction between the doped metal ions and Co4S3/Co9S8 NS.

Abstract:The Mn–FePV is successfully synthesized as an efficient OER electrocatalyst. In situ Raman analysis and DFT calculation show that Mn doping and phosphorus vacancy can synergistically regulate the electronic structure of FeP to induce rapid phase reconstruction. Due to the shortage of pure water resources, seawater electrolysis is a promising strategy to produce green hydrogen energy. To avoid chlorine oxidation reactions (ClOR) and the production of more corrosive hypochlorite, enhancing OER electrocatalyst activity is the key to solving the above problem. Considering that transition metal phosphides (TMPs) are promising OER eletrocatalysts for seawater splitting, a method to regulate the electronic structure of FeP by introducing Mn heteroatoms and phosphorus vacancy on it (Mn‐FePV) is developed. As an OER electrocatalyst in seawater solution, the synthesized Mn–FePV achieves extremely low overpotentials (η500 = 376, η1000 = 395 mV). In addition, the Pt/C||Mn–FePV couple only requires the voltage of 1.81 V to drive the current density of 1000 mA cm−2 for overall seawater splitting. The density functional theory (DFT) calculation shows that Mn–FePV (0.21 e−) has more charge transfer number compared with FeP (0.17 e−). In‐situ Raman analysis shows that phosphorus vacancy and Mn doping can synergistically regulate the electronic structure of FeP to induce rapid phase reconstruction, further improving the OER performance of Mn–FePV. The new phase species of FeOOH is confirmed to can enhance the adsorption kinetics of OER intermediates.

Promoting the Corrosion Resistance of Mo‐FeCoP@MnOx/NF via Double Protection Mechanisms Toward Electrolysis of Seawater at Ampere‐Level Current Density

Abstract:A Self‐healing Mo‐FeCoP@MnOx/NF with a double protection mechanism is prepared for seawater electrolysis at high current density. First, MnOx layer reduces the adsorption of Cl− while selectively adsorbing OH−. The anion group (PO43− and MoO42−) repel Cl− to improve the corrosion resistance. In addition, Mo doping endows the catalyst with superior HER/OER activity and corrosion resistance. Producing hydrogen via seawater electrolysis is pivotal for addressing both energy and environmental crises. An industrial‐current‐density electrocatalyst consisting of Mo‐doped FeCoP nanorods decorated with MnOx nanosheets is elaborately designed and grows in situ on nickel foam forming hierarchical Mo‐FeCoP@MnOx/NF (M‐FCP@MnOx/NF) for seawater electrolysis. Density functional theory calculations demonstrate that MnOx species remarkably reduce the adsorption capacity of Cl−, which enhances the corrosion resistance and selectivity of M‐FCP@MnOx/NF during seawater electrolysis. Moreover, incorporating high‐valence Mo species forms a superficial electrostatic layer on electrocatalysts to repel Cl−. Owing to its enhanced double protection mechanism and unique self‐healing characteristics, M‐FCP@MnOx/NF requires overpotentials of only 209 mV (HER) and 270 mV (OER) to reach a current density of ≈1.0 A cm−2 and maintains stable operation over 120 h during alkaline electrolysis of seawater. The colorimetric analysis indicates negligible ClO− production post stability test, indicating that the OER selectivity approaches 100%.

Construction of Heterojunction-Rich Metal Nitrides Porous Nanosheets Electrocatalyst for Alkaline Water/Seawater Splitting at Large Current Density

Abstract:The exploiting electrocatalysts for water/seawater electrolysis with remarkable activity and outstanding durability at industrial grade current density remains a huge challenge. Herein, CoMoNx and Fe-doped CoMoNx nanosheet arrays are in-situ grown on Ni foam, which possess plentiful holes, multilevel heterostructure, and lavish Co5.47N/MoN@NF and Fe-Co5.47N/MoN@NF interfaces. They require low overpotentials of 213 and 296 mV for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) under alkaline media to achieve current density of 800 mA cm-2, respectively, and both possess low Tafel slopes (51.1 and 49.1 mV dec-1) and undiminished stability over 80 h. Moreover, the coupled Co5.47N/MoN@NF and Fe-Co5.47N/MoN@NF electrolyzer requires low voltages of 1.735 V to yield 500 mA cm-2 in alkaline water. Notably, they also exhibit exceptional electrocatalytic properties in alkaline seawater (1.833 V@500 mA cm-2). The experimental studies and theoretical calculations verify that Fe doping does reduce the energy barrier from OH* to O* intermediates during OER process after catalyst reconstruction, and the non-metallic N site from MoN exhibits the lowest theoretical overpotential. The splendid catalytic performance is attributed to the optimized local electron configuration and porous structure. This discovery provides a new design method toward low-cost and excellent catalysts for water/seawater splitting to produce hydrogen.

Abstract:Searching for efficient nonprecious metal-based catalysts toward oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are of significance for seawater electrolysis. Herein, a core–shell-structured hybrid of cobalt phosphide nanowires@NiFe layered double hydroxide nanosheets grown on conductive nickel foam (CoP@NiFe LDH/NF) is prepared by a feasible approach at low temperature. The charming structure can provide numerous phosphide/hydroxide heterogenous interfaces, expose abundant active sites, and boost electron/mass transfer, synergistically enhancing catalytic OER activity. When employed as an electrocatalyst toward the OER, the resultant CoP@NiFe LDH/NF only requires a small overpotential of 287 mV to provide 300 mA/cm2 current density as well as long-time durability in 1.0 mol/L KOH seawater. The regulation of electronic states and surface reconstruction synergistically contribute to highly efficient seawater oxidation. This work provides an opportunity to construct efficient and inexpensive electrocatalysts for hydrogen production.

Abstract:The application of seawater splitting is crucial for hydrogen production; therefore, efficient electrocatalysts are necessary to prevent chlorine evolution and severe corrosion. A synergistic method is employed on CoFe LDH by integrating a conductive Ti3C2Tx MXene layer and subsequently applying anionic modulation. Robust metal‐substrate interaction along with subsequent phosphidation facilitates efficient electron transfer and optimises the electronic structure of Co and Fe sites. The CoFe‐P‐1000@Ti3C2Tx/CC demonstrates commendable electrochemical performance, requiring overpotentials of 106.6 mV and 276 mV for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at 10 mA cm‐2 in 1M KOH electrolyte, while 292 mV is necessary for OER in a simulated seawater electrolyte (1 M KOH + 0.5 M NaCl). Furthermore, the CoFe‐P‐1000@Ti3C2Tx/CC exhibits an encouraging cell voltage of 1.59 V (j = 10 mA cm‐2) for comprehensive alkaline seawater splitting, maintaining exceptional stability for over 50 hours.
