Abstract:In this study, the mechanical behaviors of a new 3D re‐entrant lattice auxetic structure under bending are investigated. When a classical 3D re‐entrant lattice auxetic structure is subjected to uniaxial loading, only one 2D structural component can sustain the load, which limits the capability of the auxetic structure. By changing the connection mode of 2D components, we propose a new 3D re‐entrant lattice auxetic structure that can exhibit both in‐ and out‐of‐plane negative Poisson's ratios. To investigate the bending response of the new structure, specimens with three different design parameters are additively manufactured, and their mechanical properties are studied with the four‐point bending test and finite element analysis. Compared to the classical 3D re‐entrant lattice structure, the new 3D re‐entrant lattice structure exhibits lower initial peak stress and higher energy absorption capacity. The underlying mechanism may be closely associated with the unique deformation pattern of auxetic structures under bending. The new re‐entrant auxetic structure expands the design space of 3D auxetic structures, especially for energy absorption and protection in impact scenarios. This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:A triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) is an implicit surface with high interconnection and smoothness. However, only a few studies have focused on achieving a controlled negative Poisson’s ratio of TPMS. In this study, on the basis of the Schwarz primitive (P) surface, 3D auxetic structures are successfully implemented using a dual-period function. A series of shape-controllable, dual-period, deformation functions are obtained by summarizing the characteristics of periodic deformation functions (trigonometric and sawtooth) and applying Bezier curve fitting methods. Then, with the geometry originating from the P surface, two kinds of 3D auxetic structure design methods are proposed. The mechanical properties of the auxetic structure are analyzed and verified based on the control parameters. The following conclusions are derived. (1) Both 3D auxetic structures exhibit excellent 3D negative Poisson’s ratio properties. (2) The Poisson’s ratio can be effectively adjusted by the control parameters. (3) Adjustment of the Bezier fitting curve can optimize the 3D auxetic effect, resulting in a similar Poisson’s ratio in different directions. (4) The mapping relationship between mechanical properties and structural parameters is obtained by discretization sampling, and it can serve as a guide for functional applications. Moreover, based on the Gyroid (G) surface and P surface, a heterostructure with positive and negative Poisson’s ratio structures is obtained and applied to a stem in the hip joint. The simulation proves that the heterostructure can effectively reduce the tensile stress area between the bone and the implant, thereby effectively preventing the failure of the bone implant.

Abstract:Auxetic structures have attracted further attention owing to their outstanding designability and mechanical properties. Designing innovative cellular structures with improved mechanical behavior is critical to achieving structural crashworthiness. In this paper, a novel rotating star-rhombic auxetic structure (RSAS) inspired by the rigid square rotating units is proposed, which has significant negative Poisson's ratio characteristics and enhanced energy absorption capacity. The mechanical responses of the RSAS are investigated by quasi-static experiments and finite element (FE) simulations, and a multi-stage deformation mode that facilitates the tuning of mechanical properties is found. The theoretical model based on the theory of plastic dissipation is validated, and it can accurately predict the plateau stresses and critical strains of the RSAS in multiple deformation stages. In addition, parametric analysis shows that the second plateau stress is close to the average plateau stress, it decreases with increasing the re-entrant angle α and pre-rotation angle β , and increases with increasing t or decreasing b . Increasing t / b can significantly enhance the plateau stresses, and the thickness gradient strategy further improves energy absorption. These studies can provide insights into the optimum design of auxetic cellular structures and the improvement of energy absorption.

Abstract:Compared with 2D auxetic metamaterials, 3D auxetic metamaterials present better structural, mechanical, and functional properties, which are more applicable in many potential applications in engineering fields. In this work, three types of 3D star‐shaped auxetic (SSA) structures, re‐entrant and star‐shaped composite auxetic (RSA) structures, and star‐rhombic auxetic (SRA) structures with small unit cell were proposed and fabricated by SLM method. The compressive behavior and energy absorption of the auxetic structures were explored and compared based on finite element method (FEM) verified by the compression test results of sample. Meanwhile, the numerical results present good agreements with the experimental results in terms of deformation mode, Poisson's ratio and compression behavior. The results revel that SRA structures exhibit superior elastic modulus, compressive strength, and energy absorption than SSA and RSA structures, which stems from the auxetic effect, obstruction of rhombic structures to the deformation of inclined struts and more plastic hinges. It is precisely because of the obstruction of rhombic structures that SRA structures exhibit weaken auxetic characteristic and even none auxetic behavior during the higher strain range. In addition, the length of the structural strut presents a significant impact on the energy absorption performance and compression strength of all the structures. Abstract:In order to enhance the mechanical property of auxetic lattice structures, a new enhanced auxetic lattice structure was designed by embedding narrow struts into a three-dimensional (3D) re-entrant lattice structure. A series of enhanced lattice structures with varied parameters were fabricated by 3D printing combined with the molten metal infiltration technique. Based on the method, parameter studies were performed. The enhanced auxetic lattice structure was found to exhibit superior mechanical behaviors compared to the 3D re-entrant lattice structure. An interesting phenomenon showed that increasing the diameter of connecting struts led to less auxetic and non-auxetic structures. Moreover, the compressive property of the enhanced structure also exhibited obvious dependence on the base material and compression directions. The present study can provide useful information for the design, fabrication and application of new auxetic structures with enhanced properties.

Abstract:Structural metamaterial with negative Poisson’s ratio often has low stiffness due to its porous structure. For engineering applications, the various strategies have been developed to enhance its stiffness but also weaken the negative Poisson effect. In this work, we propose a 3D reinforced re-entrant structure (RRS) by adding arrow structures to the classical re-entrant structure (RS), which is fabricated by photocuring 3D printing of photosensitive resin. The structure-properties correlative mechanism of RRS is systematically analyzed by combining experiment (quasi-static compression experiment) and finite element simulation (ABAQUS). It is found that the equivalent elastic modulus and negative Poisson’s ratio of RRS can be tuned by various structural parameters (i.e. the thickness ratio η, the length ratio of the slant rod α, the length ratio of the vertical rod β, and the angle θ of the re-entrant cells). By optimizing the structure parameters, the equivalent elastic modulus of RRS with the negative Poisson’s ratio of −0.28 can be significantly increase to 13.67 MPa, which is 12.32 times larger than that of RS with the same negative Poisson’s ratio. Due to the flexible design of stiffness and negative Poisson ratio, our proposed 3D reinforced re-entrant structural metamaterial provides a potential way for designing engineering materials with desirable performance.

Abstract:The increasing demands of safety, cost reduction or weight reduction on components calls for new, multifunctional materials. Mechanical metamaterials, such as auxetic materials, provide enhanced properties due to a specially tailored microstructure. The negative Poisson's ratio of auxetics for instance increases the impact and thermal shock resistance. In the present contribution a parametrized model of a modified auxetic structure was simulated using the finite element software ABAQUS®. Three out of five geometry parameters were varied between a minimum and maximum value to establish their impact on the energy absorption capacity and the Poisson's ratio using design of experiment (DoE). All eight resulting structures were additively manufactured by selective laser melting (SLM) and experimentally investigated under uniaxial compression to validate the simulations. The size of a unit cell has the biggest impact on both target values. Energy absorption capacity and Poisson's ratio are directly competing in the optimization, hence a compromise is necessary. The quasi-static compression experiments verified the simulation results up to the first collapse. Afterwards, the specimens failed brittle, which was not accounted for in the simulations and may result from the high process complexity of SLM manufacturing.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:The auxetic lattice structures usually have excellent energy absorption characteristics since their failed part can resist crushing loads continuously. However, their platform stress is relatively lower and shorter than some conventional energy-absorbing lattice structures. A novel kind of auxetic three-dimensional (3D) lattice structure is proposed to overcome their shortcoming and improve energy absorption capacity. The proposed lattice structure is named as re-entrant-TPMS hexagonal (RTH), which consists of triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) and 3D truss-based re-entrant hexagonal (RH) structures. The finite element (FE) method is employed to analyze the crashworthiness and Poisson's ratio of RTH lattice structures, and the accuracy of the FE models is validated by comparing the existing experimental and theoretical results of the two sub-structures, respectively. The effect of various structural parameters on the energy absorption and negative Poisson's ratio (NPR) effect of the RTH lattice structure is investigated to select the structure with better mechanical performance. The mechanism studies confirm that the platform stress is higher and longer compared to the 3D RH lattice structure. The NPR effect is also essentially consistent and accompanied by a stable shrinkage deformation due to the synergistic effect among the sub-structures. The proposed RTH lattice structure has potential applications in the crashworthiness design of carrier equipment for resisting more complex impact loads.

Abstract:A new modified rhombic dodecahedron lattice structure is proposed by redefining the cross section of the struts of the original one with a shape parameter, and the detailed design method of the proposed lattice structure is also provided. For verification, some representative configurations of the proposed lattice structure were 3D-printed via Selective Laser Melting (SLM) with the material 316 L stainless steel. Quasi-static compression test of the fabricated samples was conducted. Finite element model was also established to investigate the mechanical properties of all the as-designed configurations. Finite element results are in good agreement with the experiment results. Compared with the original lattice structure, the proposed one exhibited better mechanical properties and energy absorption. In addition, the effects of the shape parameter on the deformation mode and the mechanical properties of the rhombic dodecahedron (RD) lattice structures were also discussed, while an optimal shape parameter of the proposed RD lattice structure is obtained.
Three-dimensional Auxetic Structure Design Methods Based on Bulking-Induced Deformation and the Application in Soft Crawling Robot

Abstract:The 3D auxetic buckling pattern in the compression process is used to design auxetic structures. However, obtaining this pattern is time consuming and unintentional. In this paper, three auxetic structures, namely, globally deformed cross-frustum (GC) structure, partially deformed cross-frustum (PC) structure, and core deformed cross-frustum (CC) structure are proposed on the basis of the 3D auxetic deformation equation. The GC structure and PC structure can stably realize the 3D auxetic property through finite element analysis and experimental verification of structures. The structural strength of the latter structure is 2–5 times greater than that of the former structure. The CC structure exhibits a 3D auxetic property during the entire compression process and has excellent structural strength, which is greater than that of the first two structures. The rotational pattern can be also realized by the CC structure within the specified parameter range.A soft crawling robot with a motion module and perception module is designed by using the proposed auxetic structures. The motion module of the soft robot is designed by using the GC structure, and the perception module is realized by using the CC structure. The combination of modules can realize different functions, including advancement and rotation. The robot can be rapidly fabricated by digital light processing and has potential application value in medical treatment and other fields.
A novel hybrid auxetic honeycomb with enhanced load-bearing and energy absorption properties

Abstract:Auxetic structures with negative Poisson's ratio exhibit excellent performance in cushioning, shear resistance and energy absorption, but their load-bearing capacity is usually poor. To address this drawback of the conventional Auxetic structure, a star-rhombic honeycomb (SRH) design is proposed in this paper to improve its load-bearing capacity. Analytical models of the elastic modulus and Poisson's ratio of this structure for different loading directions are developed. Quasi-static compression experiments were conducted on SRH specimens fabricated by selective laser melting (SLM) technique. Good agreement was achieved between the simulated and experimental stress response curves and deformation patterns. It was found that the SRH structure possessed better elastic modulus and energy absorption capacity than the SH structure without sacrificing the auxetic properties. The elastic modulus and Poisson's ratio of SRH under the x loading direction are more sensitive to the changes of structural parameters. An optimum energy absorption performance is achieved for an appropriate ratio of the inner rhombic strut thickness to outer reentrant strut thickness (k = 0.5). The specific energy absorption of SRH is improved by 136% and 75% compared to that of the conventional reentrant honeycomb (RH) and star honeycomb (SH), respectively. It has advantages for application scenarios with requirements for both auxetic and load bearing properties.

Abstract:A costly and inefficient manufacturing process significantly impedes broad applications of auxetics. Herein, a novel fabrication methodology based on assembling plates and tubes is presented. Instead of fabricating auxetic structures by regularly-used 3D printing and laser cutting techniques, inexpensive commonly-used materials were assembled by adhesive in a portable way. Quasi-static compression test was carried out experimentally and numerically. Based on reliable finite element models, parametric study and gradient design were conducted for structural optimization. Numerical results reveal the significance of each geometric parameter and give evidence of the advantages of gradient design. The proposed structures are not only favorable in mechanical performance in terms of multi-stage densification and programmable stiffness and strength, but also promising in low-cost and large-scale fabrication. Such a fabrication methodology has great potential in applications of auxetic structures in protective equipment and smart energy absorbers.

Abstract:Auxetics are a unique class of innovative materials/structures. Auxetic material/structures possess a negative value of Poisson's ratio owing to the distinguished deformation behavior represented by the transvers expansion or contraction when they experience uniaxial stretching or compression, respectively. The aim of this manuscript is to show contributions of the structural modification on an auxetic hybrid structure. The in-plane properties of an auxetic structure, called the modified re-entrant chiral auxetic (MRCA) structure under quasi-static compression were experimentally and numerically explored. The experimental specimens were 3D printed using fused deposition modelling (FDM) technique. The commercial ABAQUS/Explicit solver was used to develop the simulated models. Results showed that the structural modification have led to effectively improve deformation coordination (i.e. uniform deformation patterns) and the compressive properties of the modified structure. Young's moduli were 1.75 and 12.7 higher than those of the original geometry, while values of plateau stress were 3.1 and 1.23 higher than those of the original geometry when they were compressed along the X and Y axes, respectively. The specific energy absorptions per unit mass (SEA) were 4.7 J/g and 3.9 J/g when the MRCA specimens were compressed along the X and Y axes, respectively. However, the added cylinders limited the auxeticity (i.e. the transvers contraction) of the specimens during the compression tests.

Abstract:International Journal of Applied Mechanics, Ahead of Print. In a previous work, the authors proposed a novel planar isotropic anti-tri-missing rib structure exhibiting excellent negative Poisson's ratio (NPR) performance within extremely large strain range. Building upon this foundation, a novel tubular auxetic anti-tri-missing rib structure is further proposed in this work. By utilizing the Castigliano's theorem, the theoretical formulae of the effective mechanical properties of the proposed auxetic tubular structure were then established to facilitate the understanding of the underlying microstructural mechanisms. Discussions of the analytical solutions were presented to elucidate different roles of the microstructural geometry on the effective mechanical properties of the proposed design. Results indicate that desired mechanical properties will be obtained by adjusting the geometrical parameters. The analytical solutions were also validated by systematic finite element (FE) analyses, which align well with theoretical values, confirming the feasibility of the developed theoretical formulae. The research findings presented herein provide theoretical foundations and design insights for the practical application of the auxetic tubular meta-structures.

Abstract:In this study, a novel self-similar re-entrant auxetic metamaterial (SREAM) was designed to improve its mechanical performance compared with the conventional re-entrant structure (CRS). Experimental and numerical analyses were carried out to investigate their mechanical performance under quasi-static compression. The mechanical effects of key geometric parameters of inner re-entrants have also been symmetrically investigated to provide the modeling basis for SREAMs' geometric optimization. It was found that SREAM do well in both stiffness and auxeticity simultaneously. The mechanical performance of SREAMs is highly adjustable via proper configuration on geometric parameters. The proposed SREAM possibly provides superior auxeticity and high stiffness, with adjustable performance.

Abstract:Chiral metastructures consisting of ring (polygonal or cubic) nodes and elastic bending ligaments exhibit excellent design flexibility for compliant structures. In this paper, based on rigid cubic node rotation and the kinematic geometrical relations of a three‐dimensional (3D) isotropic anti‐tetrachiral structure, an analytical expression for the modulus of the 3D isotropic anti‐tetrachiral structure is derived from strain energy analysis. The nylon powder Selected Laser Sintering (SLS) additive manufacturing technique is employed for fabricating two types of 3D isotropic anti‐tetrachiral specimens with different geometrical parameters; then comparison between experiments, finite element analysis (FEA), and theoretical studies is performed for verifying the analytical formula. The mechanical properties of 3D isotropic anti‐tetrachiral structures can be tuned with two independent dimensionless geometrical parameters. The proposed 3D anti‐tetrachiral structures can be employed for designing advanced structures against impact damages, realizing flexibility of industrial components, and optimizing the vibration attenuation abilities of engineering structures.

Abstract:Auxetic materials or structures, especially 3D cellular lattice architectures with negative Poisson's ratio (NPR) have attracted great attention due to their unprecedented mechanical behaviors and promising applications in recent years. Many 3D auxetic architected cellular materials have been manufactured and characterized with polymers and metals using additive manufacturing technology as well as some fibre reinforced polymers (FRP) composites via assembly method, however metal 3D printed auxetic structures with high-quality are rarely reported and FRP composites using assembly method contain a variety of defects which result in a knock-down effect on mechanical properties. Auxetic structures made from polymers are normally of low stiffness and strength and FRP composites are of low toughness and impact resistance, which causes limitations on their structural and functional applications. If rationally designed structures can be made from high-performance metal materials the specific stiffness and strength of which are much higher than polymers, their specific stiffness and strength can be significantly increased which will make them more suitable for various potential applications. This paper presents novel 3D double-U hierarchical structures (DUHs) based on double-V hierarchical structures (DVHs) with tunable Poisson's ratio and Young's modulus by tailoring the geometry parameters. Experimental, numerical and theoretical results show that DUHs have smooth geometry that can reduce manufacturing damage and stress concentration under elastic loading. Another advantage of DUHs is that the curved configurations have enhanced auxetic behavior and higher static collapse stress than DVHs under crushing. The advanced 3D printing technology and those excellent mechanical properties of 3D DUHs meet the requirements of structural and functional applications.
Multi-objective optimization and theoretical analysis of re-entrant structure with enhanced mechanical properties

Abstract:In response to the challenge of low stiffness and energy absorption capacity, various designs of negative Poisson's ratio (NPR) structures have emerged. However, these designs often lack a comprehensive analysis of other mechanical properties, leading to subpar mechanical performance. Previous studies have explored the mechanical properties response of enhanced re-entrant honeycombs (ERH) under impact conditions, revealing limitations in optimizing the structure's performance with a single objective. Therefore, this study aims to enhance ERH structural parameters to achieve superior mechanical performance through theoretical derivations and geometric optimizations. The results demonstrate that the proposed theoretical model is consistent with finite element analysis and response surface (RS) predictions. Expressions for Young's modulus, specific energy absorption, and compressive strength are proposed, facilitating the identification of structural parameters that meet specific requirements during reverse design. Furthermore, a multi-objective optimization approach optimizes the geometric parameters based on maximum energy absorption and compressive strength. The mechanical behavior of the optimized ERH is investigated using the finite element method, revealing the energy absorption capacity of 13.78 J/g while maintaining Poisson's ratio at -1.06. Additionally, the deformation mode of the optimized structure showcases enhanced stability compared to traditional honeycomb structures. The theoretical model and RS method were used to guide the design of ERH and promote the application of NPR structures.
