Abstract:Let A be a unital C∗ -algebra with unit e and let a : b be the parallel sum of the two positive definite elements a and b of A defined by a(a+b)−1b . We show that the parallel sum a : b can be stated by the solution of the following variational problem: a:b=minx+y=e(x∗ax+y∗by). This expression leads us to present some properties of the parallel sum in C∗ -algebras and prove inequalities involving it.

Abstract:In this paper, first, we answer affirmatively an open problem which was presented in 2005 by professor Gudder on the sub-sequential effect algebras. That is, we prove that if (E, 0, 1, circle plus, o) is a sequential effect algebra and A is a commutative subset of E, then the sub-sequential effect algebra (A) over bar generated by A is also commutative. Next, we also study the following uniqueness problem: If na = nb = c for some positive integer n >= 2, then under what conditions a = b hold? We prove that if c is a sharp element of E and a vertical bar b, then a = b. We give also two examples to show that neither of the above two conditions can be discarded.

A conjecture concerning *-algebras that unifies some matrix decompositions

Abstract:In this note, we propose a simple-looking but broad conjecture about star-algebras over the field of real numbers. The conjecture enables many matrix decompositions to be represented by star-algebras and star-ideals. This paper is written for people with a background in representation theory and module theory. The motivation for investigating this is the possibility of expressing polymorphic algorithms in numerical and theoretical linear algebra. This is similar to but different from algebraic (semiring based) approaches to dynamic programming. We prove certain cases of the conjecture.

This result generalizes the results in \cite{ONIR} and gives an affirmative answer to a conjecture in \cite{OACRT} for all $s\geq2$ and for all $p>0$ and $r\geq1$ such that $rp\geq1$ and $t=\frac{1}{2}$. This result also leads directly to Dinh, Ahsani, and Tam's conjecture in \cite{GAI} and proves Audenaert's result in \cite{ANIFP}.

Abstract:In the above paper (H. H. Choi, IEEE Trans. Automat. Contr., vol. 46, pp. 504-8, 2001), new methods to obtain upper matrix bounds for a discrete algebraic Riccati equation (DARE) have been established, but the author assumes that the system matrix A is nonsingular and DARE has a positive-definite solution. In this note, some similar results can be obtained when a solution is positive-semidefinite and there are no extra assumption that A is nonsingular. In reply the original author explains some of the underlying assumptions and comments on the computational burdens in the inequality in the commenters' note.

Abstract:The frequency-dependent attenuation typically obeys an empirical power law with an exponent ranging from 0 to 2. The standard time-domain partial differential equation models can describe merely two extreme cases of frequency independent and frequency-squared dependent attenuations. The otherwise non-zeor and non-square frequency dependency occuring in many cases of practical interest is thus often called the anomalous attenuation. In this study, we developed a linear integro-differential equation wave model for the anomalous attenuation by using the space fractional Laplacian operation, and the strategy is then extended to the nonlinear Burgers, KZK, and Westervelt equations. A new definition of the fractional Laplacian is also introduced which naturally includes the boundary conditions and has inherent regularization to ease the hyper-singularity in the conventional fractional Laplacian. Under the Szabo's smallness approximation where attenuation is assumed to be much smaller than the wave number, our linear model is found consistent with arbitrary frequency dependencies. According to the fact that the physical attenuation can be understood a statistic process, the empirical range [0,2] of the power law exponent is explained via the Levy stable distribution theory. It is noted that the power law attentuation underlies fractal microstructures of anomalously attenuative media.

Abstract:In this paper we generalize the concept of Davis–Wielandt shell of operators on a Hilbert space when a semi-inner product induced by a positive operator A is considered. Moreover, we investigate the parallelism of A-bounded operators with respect to the seminorm and the numerical radius induced by A. Mainly, we characterize A-normaloid operators in terms of their A-Davis–Wielandt radii. In addition, a connection between A-seminorm-parallelism to the identity operator and an equality condition for the A-Davis–Wielandt radius is proved. This generalizes the well-known results in Chan and Chan (Oper Matrices 11(3):885–890, 2017), Zamani et al. (Linear Multilinear Algebra 67(11):2147–2158, 2019). Some other related results are also discussed.

Abstract:In numerical linear algebra, a well-established practice is to choose a norm that exploits the structure of the problem at hand to optimise accuracy or computational complexity. In numerical polynomial algebra, a single norm (attributed to Weyl) dominates the literature. This article initiates the use of norms for numerical algebraic geometry, with an emphasis on . This classical idea yields strong improvements in the analysis of the number of steps performed by numerous iterative algorithms. In particular, we exhibit three algorithms where, despite the complexity of computing -norm, the use of -norms substantially reduces computational complexity: a subdivision-based algorithm in real algebraic geometry for computing the homology of semialgebraic sets, a well-known meshing algorithm in computational geometry and the computation of zeros of systems of complex quadratic polynomials (a particular case of Smale's 17th problem).

Abstract:A classical problem in real geometry concerns the representation of positive semidefinite elements of a ring $A$ as sums of squares of elements of $A$. If $A$ is an excellent ring of dimension $\geq3$, it is already known that it contains positive semidefinite elements that cannot be represented as sums of squares in $A$. The one dimensional local case has been afforded by Scheiderer (mainly when its residue field is real closed). In this work we focus on the $2$-dimensional case and determine (under some mild conditions) which local excellent henselian rings $A$ of embedding dimension $3$ have the property that every positive semidefinite element of $A$ is a sum of squares of elements of $A$.

Abstract:We introduce a new norm (say -norm) on the space of all bounded linear operators defined on a normed linear space . We explore various properties of the -norm. In addition, we study several equalities and inequalities of the -norm of operators on As an application, we obtain an upper bound for the numerical radius of product of operators, which improves a well-known upper bound of the numerical radius for sectorial matrices. We present the -norm of operators by using the extreme points of the unit ball of the corresponding spaces. Furthermore, we define a geometric constant (say -index) associated with and study properties of the -index. In particular, we obtain the exact value of the -index for some polyhedral spaces and complex Hilbert space. Finally, we study the -index of -sum of normed linear spaces.

Abstract:Let $E$ be a Banach space that does not contain any copy of $\ell^1$ and $\A$ be a non commutative $C^*$-algebra. We prove that every absolutely summing operator from $\A$ into $E^*$ is compact, thus answering a question of Pe\l czynski. As application, we show that if $G$ is a compact metrizable abelian group and $\Lambda$ is a Riesz subset of its dual then every countably additive $\A^*$-valued measure with bounded variation and whose Fourier transform is supported by $\Lambda$ has relatively compact range. Extensions of the same result to symmetric spaces of measurable operators are also presented.
A note on the $A$-numerical range of semi-Hilbertian operators

Abstract:In this paper we explore the relation between the $A$-numerical range and the $A$-spectrum of $A$-bounded operators in the setting of semi-Hilbertian structure. We introduce a new definition of $A$-normal operator and prove that closure of the $A$-numerical range of an $A$-normal operator is the convex hull of the $A$-spectrum. We further prove Anderson's theorem for the sum of $A$-normal and $A$-compact operators which improves and generalizes the existing result on Anderson's theorem for $A$-compact operators. Finally we introduce strongly $A$-numerically closed class of operators and along with other results prove that the class of $A$-normal operators is strongly $A$-numerically closed.
