Abstract:
The depolymerization of lignin to high value-added aromatic monomers has attracted considerable attention. Nevertheless, an effective separation process is essential for obtaining aromatic monomers from lignin depolymerization products. In this study, a binary petroleum ether (PE)/dichloromethane (DCM) solvent was used to separate aromatic monomers from lignin oil obtained from phosphomolybdic acid (POM) catalytic oxidation. The effects of the solvent polarity and temperature on the extraction efficiency were examined. The polarity of the binary solvent mixture was adjusted by tuning the PE:DCM ratio. Using the PE/DCM (85/15) mixture as the extraction solvent, 49.0% of aromatic monomers were recovered from lignin oil; the extraction fraction contained 80% aromatic monomers. Through sequential extraction of the lignin oil three times, the aromatic monomers recovery reached 69.2%, and monomers content in the extraction fraction was improved slightly to 83.0%. Lowering the extraction temperature resulted in a higher separation efficiency of aromatic monomers. This study provides a simple and efficient way to separate aromatic monomers from lignin depolymerization products.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The main problem this paper attempts to address is the efficient extraction of aromatic monomers from lignin oil. Specifically, lignin, as an abundant natural polymer, contains a large number of aromatic structural units, and its depolymerization can produce high-value-added aromatic monomers. However, existing depolymerization methods often fail to completely break down lignin into aromatic monomers, resulting in a significant amount of aromatic oligomers in the depolymerization products. Therefore, it is necessary to develop an effective method to separate aromatic monomers from these depolymerization products for further utilization. To achieve this goal, the authors propose an extraction method using a mixed solvent of petroleum ether (PE) and dichloromethane (DCM). By adjusting the ratio of PE to DCM, the polarity of the solvent can be changed, thereby effectively separating the aromatic monomers. The study also explores the effects of solvent polarity, extraction temperature, and extraction times on the extraction efficiency to optimize the extraction conditions. Ultimately, this method can significantly improve the recovery rate of aromatic monomers after multiple extractions, and the content of aromatic monomers in the extracted products is also relatively high.
