Abstract:Several articles deal with tilings with various shapes, and also a very frequent type of combinatorics is to examine the walks on graphs or on grids. We combine these two things and give the numbers of the shortest walks crossing the tiled $(1\times n)$ and $(2\times n)$ square grids by covering them with squares and dominoes. We describe these numbers not only recursively, but also as rational polynomial linear combinations of Fibonacci numbers.

Abstract:We provide a new derivation of the well-known generating function counting the number of walks on a regular tree that start and end at the same vertex, and more generally, a generating function for the number of walks that end at a vertex a distance i from the start vertex. These formulas seem to be very old, and go back, in an equivalent form, at least to Harry Kesten's work on symmetric random walks on groups from 1959, and in the present form to Brendan McKay (1983).

Abstract:In this paper, we provide a novel enumeration algorithm for the set of all walks of a given length within a directed graph. Our algorithm has worst-case constant delay between outputting succinct representations of such walks, after a preprocessing step requiring linear time relative to the size of the graph. We apply these results to the problem of enumerating succinct representations of the strings of a given length from a prefix-closed regular language (languages accepted by a finite automaton which has final states only).

Abstract:Many polynomial invariants are defined on graphs for encoding the combinatorial information and researching them algebraically. In this paper, we introduce the cycle polynomial and the path polynomial of directed graphs for counting cycles and paths, respectively. They satisfy recurrence relations with respect to elementary edge or vertex operations. They are related to other polynomials and can also be generalized to the bivariate cycle polynomial, the bivariate path polynomial and the trivariate cycle-path polynomial. And a most general digraph polynomial satisfying such a linear recurrence relation is recursively defined and shown to be co-reducible to the trivariate cycle-path polynomial. We also give an explicit expression of this polynomial.

Abstract:The watchman's walk problem in a digraph calls for finding a minimum length closed dominating walk, where direction of arcs is respected. The watchman's walk of a de Bruijn graph of order $k$ is described by a de Bruijn sequence of order $k-1$. This idea is extended to certain subdigraphs of de Bruijn graphs.

Gathering Information about a Graph by Counting Walks from a Single Vertex

Abstract:We say that a vertex $v$ in a connected graph $G$ is decisive if the numbers of walks from $v$ of each length determine the graph $G$ rooted at $v$ up to isomorphism among all connected rooted graphs with the same number of vertices. On the other hand, $v$ is called ambivalent if it has the same walk counts as a vertex in a non-isomorphic connected graph with the same number of vertices as $G$. Using the classical constructions of cospectral trees, we first observe that ambivalent vertices exist in almost all trees. If a graph $G$ is determined by spectrum and its characteristic polynomial is irreducible, then we prove that all vertices of $G$ are decisive. Note that both assumptions are conjectured to be true for almost all graphs. Without using any assumption, we are able to prove that the vertices of a random graph are with high probability distinguishable from each other by the numbers of closed walks of length at most 4. As a consequence, the closed walk counts for lengths 2, 3, and 4 provide a canonical labeling of a random graph. Answering a question posed in chemical graph theory, we finally show that all walk counts for a vertex in an $n$-vertex graph are determined by the counts for the $2n$ shortest lengths, and the bound $2n$ is here asymptotically tight.

Walks with small steps in the quarter plane

Abstract:Let S be a subset of {-1,0,1}^2 not containing (0,0). We address the enumeration of plane lattice walks with steps in S, that start from (0,0) and always remain in the first quadrant. A priori, there are 2^8 problems of this type, but some are trivial. Some others are equivalent to a model of walks confined to a half-plane: such models can be solved systematically using the kernel method, which leads to algebraic generating functions. We focus on the remaining cases, and show that there are 79 inherently different problems to study. To each of them, we associate a group G of birational transformations. We show that this group is finite in exactly 23 cases. We present a unified way of solving 22 of the 23 models associated with a finite group. For each of them, the generating function is found to be D-finite. The 23rd model, known as Gessel's walks, has recently been proved by Bostan et al. to have an algebraic (and hence D-finite) solution. We conjecture that the remaining 56 models, associated with an infinite group, have a non-D-finite generating function. Our approach allows us to recover and refine some known results, and also to obtain new results. For instance, we prove that walks with N, E, W, S, SW and NE steps have an algebraic generating function.

On the Number of Walks in a Triangular Domain

Abstract:We consider walks on a triangular domain that is a subset of the triangular lattice. We then specialise this by dividing the lattice into two directed sublattices with different weights. Our central result is an explicit formula for the generating function of walks starting at a fixed point in this domain and ending anywhere within the domain. Intriguingly, the specialisation of this formula to walks starting in a fixed corner of the triangle shows that these are equinumerous to two-coloured Motzkin paths, and two-coloured three-candidate Ballot paths, in a strip of finite height.

A Theory for Coloring Walks in a Digraph

Abstract:Consider edge colorings of digraphs where edges $v_1 v_2$ and $v_2 v_3$ have different colors. This coloring induces a vertex coloring by sets of edge colors, in which edge $v_1 v_2$ in the graph implies that the set color of $v_1$ contains an element not in the set color of $v_2$, and conversely. We generalize to colorings of $k$(vertex)-walks, defined so two walks have different colors if one is the prefix $c_1$ and the other is the suffix $c_2$ of a common $(k+1)$-walk. Further, the colors can belong to a poset $P$ where $c_1$, $c_2$ must satisfy $c_1 \not\leq c_2$. This set construction generalizes the lower order ideal in $P$ from a set of $k$-walk colors; these order ideals are partially ordered by containment. We conclude that a $P$ coloring of $k$-walks exists iff there is a vertex coloring by $A$ iterated $k-1$ times on $P$, where Birkhoff's $A$ maps a poset to its poset of lower order ideals. Thus the directed chromatic index problem is generalized and reduced to poset coloring of vertices. This work uses ideas, results and motivations due to Cole and Vishkin on deterministic coin tossing and Becker and Simon on vertex covers for subsets of $(n-2)$-cubes.

A Reflection Principle for Three Vicious Walkers

Abstract:We establish a reflection principle for three lattice walkers and use this principle to reduce the enumeration of the configurations of three vicious walkers to that of configurations of two vicious walkers. In the combinatorial treatment of two vicious walkers, we make connections to two-chain watermelons and to the classical ballot problem. Precisely, the reflection principle leads to a bijection between three walks $(L_1, L_2, L_3)$ such that $L_2$ intersects both $L_1$ and $L_3$ and three walks $(L_1, L_2, L_3)$ such that $L_1$ intersects $L_3$. Hence we find a combinatorial interpretation of the formula for the generating function for the number of configurations of three vicious walkers, originally derived by Bousquet-Mélou by using the kernel method, and independently by Gessel by using tableaux and symmetric functions.

Combinatorics of nondeterministic walks

Abstract:This paper introduces nondeterministic walks, a new variant of one-dimensional discrete walks. The main difference to classical walks is that its nondeterministic steps consist of sets of steps from a predefined set such that all possible extensions are explored in parallel. We discuss in detail the most natural nondeterministic step sets (Dyck and Motzkin step sets), and show that several nondeterministic classes of lattice paths, such as nondeterministic bridges, excursions, and meanders are algebraic. The key concept is the generalization of the ending point of a walk to its reachable points, i.e., a set of ending points. We extend our results to general step sets: We show that nondeterministic bridges and several subclasses of nondeterministic meanders are always algebraic. We conjecture the same is true for nondeterministic excursions, and we present python and Maple packages to support our conjecture. This research is motivated by the study of networks involving encapsulation and decapsulation of protocols. Our results are obtained using generating functions, analytic combinatorics, and additive combinatorics. Keywords. Abstract:In this article, we study the enumeration by length of several walk models on the square lattice. We obtain bijections between walks in the upper half-plane returning to the $x$-axis and walks in the quarter plane. A recent work by Bostan, Chyzak, and Mahboubi has given a bijection for models using small north, west, and south-east steps. We adapt and generalize it to a bijection between half-plane walks using those three steps in two colours and a quarter-plane model over the symmetrized step set consisting of north, north-west, west, south, south-east, and east. We then generalize our bijections to certain models with large steps: for given $p\geq1$, a bijection is given between the half-plane and quarter-plane models obtained by keeping the small south-east step and replacing the two steps north and west of length 1 by the $p+1$ steps of length $p$ in directions between north and west. This model is close to, but distinct from, the model of generalized tandem walks studied by Bousquet-Mélou, Fusy, and Raschel.

Abstract:A Schröder path is a lattice path from $(0,0)$ to $(2n,0)$ with steps $(1,1)$, $(1,-1)$ and $(2,0)$ that never goes below the $x-$axis. A small Schröder path is a Schröder path with no $(2,0)$ steps on the $x-$axis. In this paper, a 3-variable generating function $R_L(x,y,z)$ is given for Schröder paths and small Schröder paths respectively. As corollaries, we obtain the generating functions for several kinds of generalized Schröder paths counted according to the order in a unified way.

We extend the notion of nonbacktracking walks from unweighted graphs to graphs whose edges have a nonnegative weight. Here the weight associated with a walk is taken to be the product over the weights along the individual edges. We give two ways to compute the associated generating function, and corresponding node centrality measures. One method works directly on the original graph and one uses a line graph construction followed by a projection. The first method is more efficient, but the second has the advantage of extending naturally to time-evolving graphs. Based on these generating functions, we define and study corresponding centrality measures. Illustrative computational results are also provided.

Abstract:The Catalan numbers count many classes of combinatorial objects. The most emblematic such objects are probably the Dyck walks and the binary trees, and, whenever another class of combinatorial objects is counted by the Catalan numbers, it is natural to search for an explicit bijection between the latter objects and one of the former objects. In most cases, such a bijection happens to be relatively simple but it might sometimes be more intricate. In this work, we focus on so-called \emph{basketball walks}, which are integer-valued walks with step-set $\{-2,-1,+1,+2\}$. The presence of $-2$ as an allowed step makes it impossible to use the classical Łukasiewicz encoding of trees by integer-valued walks, and thus a different strategy is needed. We give an explicit bijection that maps, for each $n\ge 2$, $n$-step basketball walks from $0$ to $0$ that visit $1$ and are positive except at their extremities to $n$-leaf binary trees. Moreover, we can partition the steps of a walk into $\pm 1$-steps, odd $+2$-steps or even $-2$-steps, and odd $-2$-steps or even $+2$-steps, and these three types of steps are mapped through our bijection to double leaves, left leaves, and right leaves of the corresponding tree. We also prove that basketball walks from $0$ to $1$ that are positive except at the origin are in bijection with increasing unary-binary trees with associated permutation avoiding $213$. We furthermore give the refined generating function of these objects with an extra variable accounting for the unary nodes.

Geometric Aspects of 2-Walk-regular Graphs

Abstract:A t-walk-regular graph is a graph for which the number of walks of given length between two vertices depends only on the distance between these two vertices, as long as this distance is at most t. Such graphs generalize distance-regular graphs and t-arc-transitive graphs. In this paper, we will focus on 1- and in particular 2-walk-regular graphs, and study analogues of certain results that are important for distance regular graphs. We will generalize Delsarte's clique bound to 1-walk-regular graphs, Godsil's multiplicity bound and Terwilliger's analysis of the local structure to 2-walk-regular graphs. We will show that 2-walk-regular graphs have a much richer combinatorial structure than 1-walk-regular graphs, for example by proving that there are finitely many non-geometric 2-walk-regular graphs with given smallest eigenvalue and given diameter (a geometric graph is the point graph of a special partial linear space); a result that is analogous to a result on distance-regular graphs. Such a result does not hold for 1-walk-regular graphs, as our construction methods will show.
Enumeration of three quadrant walks with small steps and walks on other M-quadrant cones

Abstract:We address the enumeration of walks with small steps confined to a two-dimensional cone, for example the quarter plane, three-quarter plane or the slit plane. In the quarter plane case, the solutions for unweighted step-sets are already well understood, in the sense that it is known precisely for which cases the generating function is algebraic, D-finite or D-algebraic, and exact integral expressions are known in all cases. We derive similar results in a much more general setting: we enumerate walks on an $M$-quadrant cone for any positive integer $M$, with weighted steps starting at any point. The main breakthrough in this work is the derivation of an analytic functional equation which characterises the generating function of these walks, which is analogous to one now used widely for quarter-plane walks. In the case $M=3$, which corresponds to walks avoiding a quadrant, we provide exact integral-expression solutions for walks with weighted small steps which determine the generating function ${\sf C}(x,y;t)$ counting these walks. Moreover, for each step-set and starting point of the walk we determine whether the generating function ${\sf C}(x,y;t)$ is algebraic, D-finite or D-algebraic as a function of $x$ and $y$. In fact we provide results of this type for any $M$-quadrant cone, showing that this nature is the same for any odd $M$. For $M$ even we find that the generating functions counting these walks are D-finite in $x$ and $y$, and algebraic if and only if the starting point of the walk is on the same axis as the boundaries of the cone.
