Abstract:Reliable people counting is a crucial task in video surveillances. Among the available techniques, map-based approaches have shown a good performance in estimating the number of people in crowds. These approaches generally subtract the background, and then map the number of people to some features such as foreground area, texture features or edge count. However, in complex scenes, they suffer from inaccurate foreground/background segmentations, erroneous image features, and require large amount of training data to capture the wide variations in crowd distribution. This paper proposes a method using motion statistics of feature-points to estimate the number of moving people in a crowd. Simple feature-points are tracked within the scene. Then moving feature-points are partitioned into clusters corresponding to separate groups of people. For each group, three statistical features are calculated from related feature-points. The amount of moving feature-points is used to provide a rough estimate of group size. Furthermore, motion trajectories of feature-points are utilized to extract two other features related with the amount of occlusions present in groups. The extracted data are used to estimate the number of people in each group, so that the total crowd size is the sum of all group estimates. The experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms the state of the art approaches, e.g., with MSE of 2.357 and MAE of 1.093 for the benchmark video clip “Peds1”. The proposed approach is good for estimating the number of people in public places, such as pedestrian walkways and parks, where people are moving and partial occlusions present in the scene.

Gathering Information about a Graph by Counting Walks from a Single Vertex

Abstract:We say that a vertex $v$ in a connected graph $G$ is decisive if the numbers of walks from $v$ of each length determine the graph $G$ rooted at $v$ up to isomorphism among all connected rooted graphs with the same number of vertices. On the other hand, $v$ is called ambivalent if it has the same walk counts as a vertex in a non-isomorphic connected graph with the same number of vertices as $G$. Using the classical constructions of cospectral trees, we first observe that ambivalent vertices exist in almost all trees. If a graph $G$ is determined by spectrum and its characteristic polynomial is irreducible, then we prove that all vertices of $G$ are decisive. Note that both assumptions are conjectured to be true for almost all graphs. Without using any assumption, we are able to prove that the vertices of a random graph are with high probability distinguishable from each other by the numbers of closed walks of length at most 4. As a consequence, the closed walk counts for lengths 2, 3, and 4 provide a canonical labeling of a random graph. Answering a question posed in chemical graph theory, we finally show that all walk counts for a vertex in an $n$-vertex graph are determined by the counts for the $2n$ shortest lengths, and the bound $2n$ is here asymptotically tight.

Quantum Counting on the Complete Bipartite Graph

Abstract:Quantum counting is a key quantum algorithm that aims to determine the number of marked elements in a database. This algorithm is based on the quantum phase estimation algorithm and uses the evolution operator of Grover's algorithm because its non-trivial eigenvalues are dependent on the number of marked elements. Since Grover's algorithm can be viewed as a quantum walk on a complete graph, a natural way to extend quantum counting is to use the evolution operator of quantum-walk-based search on non-complete graphs instead of Grover's operator. In this paper, we explore this extension by analyzing the coined quantum walk on the complete bipartite graph with an arbitrary number of marked vertices. We show that some eigenvalues of the evolution operator depend on the number of marked vertices and using this fact we show that the quantum phase estimation can be used to obtain the number of marked vertices. The time complexity for estimating the number of marked vertices in the bipartite graph with our algorithm aligns closely with that of the original quantum counting algorithm.

Abstract:Given an integer $n$, let $G(n)$ be the number of integer sequences $n-1\ge d_1\ge d_2\ge\dotsb\ge d_n\ge 0$ that are the degree sequence of some graph. We show that $G(n)=(c+o(1))4^n/n^{3/4}$ for some constant $c>0$, improving both the previously best upper and lower bounds by a factor of $n^{1/4}$ (up to polylog-factors). Additionally, we answer a question of Royle, extend the values of $n$ for which the exact value of $G(n)$ is known from $n\le290$ to $n\le 1651$ and determine the asymptotic probability that the integral of a (lazy) simple symmetric random walk bridge remains non-negative.

Abstract:We present a novel quasi-Monte Carlo mechanism to improve graph-based sampling, coined repelling random walks. By inducing correlations between the trajectories of an interacting ensemble such that their marginal transition probabilities are unmodified, we are able to explore the graph more efficiently, improving the concentration of statistical estimators whilst leaving them unbiased. The mechanism has a trivial drop-in implementation. We showcase the effectiveness of repelling random walks in a range of settings including estimation of graph kernels, the PageRank vector and graphlet concentrations. We provide detailed experimental evaluation and robust theoretical guarantees. To our knowledge, repelling random walks constitute the first rigorously studied quasi-Monte Carlo scheme correlating the directions of walkers on a graph, inviting new research in this exciting nascent domain.

Number of distinct and common sites visited by $N$ independent random walkers

Abstract:In this Chapter, we consider a model of $N$ independent random walkers, each of duration $t$, and each starting from the origin, on a lattice in $d$ dimensions. We focus on two observables, namely $D_N(t)$ and $C_N(t)$ denoting respectively the number of distinct and common sites visited by the walkers. For large $t$, where the lattice random walkers converge to independent Brownian motions, we compute exactly the mean $\langle D_N(t) \rangle$ and $\langle C_N(t) \rangle$. Our main interest is on the $N$-dependence of these quantities. While for $\langle D_N(t) \rangle$ the $N$-dependence only appears in the prefactor of the power-law growth with time, a more interesting behavior emerges for $\langle C_N(t) \rangle$. For this latter case, we show that there is a ``phase transition'' in the $(N, d)$ plane where the two critical line $d=2$ and $d=d_c(N) = 2N/(N-1)$ separate three phases of the growth of $\langle C_N(t)\rangle$. The results are extended to the mean number of sites visited exactly by $K$ of the $N$ walkers. Furthermore in $d=1$, the full distribution of $D_N(t)$ and $C_N(t)$ are computed, exploiting a mapping to the extreme value statistics. Extensions to two other models, namely $N$ independent Brownian bridges and $N$ independent resetting Brownian motions/bridges are also discussed.

Abstract:Algorithms for mining very large graphs, such as those representing online social networks, to discover the relative frequency of small subgraphs within them are of high interest to sociologists, computer scientists and marketeers alike. However, the computation of these network motif statistics via naive enumeration is infeasible for either its prohibitive computational costs or access restrictions on the full graph data. Methods to estimate the motif statistics based on random walks by sampling only a small fraction of the subgraphs in the large graph address both of these challenges. In this paper, we present a new algorithm, called the Waddling Random Walk (WRW), which estimates the concentration of motifs of any size. It derives its name from the fact that it sways a little to the left and to the right, thus also sampling nodes not directly on the path of the random walk. The WRW algorithm achieves its computational efficiency by not trying to enumerate subgraphs around the random walk but instead using a randomized protocol to sample subgraphs in the neighborhood of the nodes visited by the walk. In addition, WRW achieves significantly higher accuracy (measured by the closeness of its estimate to the correct value) and higher precision (measured by the low variance in its estimations) than the current state-of-the-art algorithms for mining subgraph statistics. We illustrate these advantages in speed, accuracy and precision using simulations on well-known and widely used graph datasets representing real networks.

Ant-Inspired Density Estimation via Random Walks

Abstract:Many ant species employ distributed population density estimation in applications ranging from quorum sensing [Pra05], to task allocation [Gor99], to appraisal of enemy colony strength [Ada90]. It has been shown that ants estimate density by tracking encounter rates -- the higher the population density, the more often the ants bump into each other [Pra05,GPT93]. We study distributed density estimation from a theoretical perspective. We prove that a group of anonymous agents randomly walking on a grid are able to estimate their density within a small multiplicative error in few steps by measuring their rates of encounter with other agents. Despite dependencies inherent in the fact that nearby agents may collide repeatedly (and, worse, cannot recognize when this happens), our bound nearly matches what would be required to estimate density by independently sampling grid locations. From a biological perspective, our work helps shed light on how ants and other social insects can obtain relatively accurate density estimates via encounter rates. From a technical perspective, our analysis provides new tools for understanding complex dependencies in the collision probabilities of multiple random walks. We bound the strength of these dependencies using $local\ mixing\ properties$ of the underlying graph. Our results extend beyond the grid to more general graphs and we discuss applications to size estimation for social networks and density estimation for robot swarms.

Distinct nodes visited by random walkers on scale-free networks

Abstract:Random walks on discrete lattices are fundamental models that form the basis for our understanding of transport and diffusion processes. For a single random walker on complex networks, many properties such as the mean first passage time and cover time are known. However, many recent applications involving search engines and recommender systems involve multiple random walkers on complex networks. In this work, based on numerical simulations, we show that the fraction of nodes of scale-free network not visited by <math>W</math> random walkers in time <math>t</math> has a stretched exponential form independent of the number of walkers and the size of the network. This leads to a power-law relation between nodes not visited by <math>W</math> walkers and by 1 walker within time <math>t</math>. Thus the problem of finding the distinct nodes visited by <math>W</math> walkers, effectively, can be reduced to that of a single walker. The robustness of the results is demonstrated by verifying them on four different real-world networks that approximately display scale-free structure.

Abstract:Finding efficient algorithms to explore large networks with the aim of recovering information about their structure is an open problem. Here, we investigate this challenge by proposing a model in which random walkers with previously assigned home nodes navigate through the network during a fixed amount of time. We consider that the exploration is successful if the walker gets the information gathered back home, otherwise, no data is retrieved. Consequently, at each time step, the walkers, with some probability, have the choice to either go backward approaching their home or go farther away. We show that there is an optimal solution to this problem in terms of the average information retrieved and the degree of the home nodes and design an adaptive strategy based on the behavior of the random walker. Finally, we compare different strategies that emerge from the model in the context of network reconstruction. Our results could be useful for the discovery of unknown connections in large scale networks.

Sampling Algorithms for Butterfly Counting on Temporal Bipartite Graphs

Abstract:Temporal bipartite graphs are widely used to denote time-evolving relationships between two disjoint sets of nodes, such as customer-product interactions in E-commerce and user-group memberships in social networks. Temporal butterflies, $(2,2)$-bicliques that occur within a short period and in a prescribed order, are essential in modeling the structural and sequential patterns of such graphs. Counting the number of temporal butterflies is thus a fundamental task in analyzing temporal bipartite graphs. However, existing algorithms for butterfly counting on static bipartite graphs and motif counting on temporal unipartite graphs are inefficient for this purpose. In this paper, we present a general framework with three sampling strategies for temporal butterfly counting. Since exact counting can be time-consuming on large graphs, our approach alternatively computes approximate estimates accurately and efficiently. We also provide analytical bounds on the number of samples each strategy requires to obtain estimates with small relative errors and high probability. We finally evaluate our framework on six real-world datasets and demonstrate its superior accuracy and efficiency compared to several baselines. Overall, our proposed framework and sampling strategies provide efficient and accurate approaches to approximating temporal butterfly counts on large-scale temporal bipartite graphs.

Repeated measurements and random scattering in quantum walks

Abstract:We study the effect of random scattering in quantum walks on a finite graph and compare it with the effect of repeated measurements. To this end, a constructive approach is employed by introducing a localized and a delocalized basis for the underlying Hilbert space. This enables us to design Hamiltonians whose eigenvectors are either localized or delocalized. By presenting some specific examples we demonstrate that the localization of eigenvectors restricts the transition probabilities on the graph and leads to dark states in the monitored evolution. We conclude that repeated measurements as well as random scattering provide efficient tools for controlling quantum walks.

Abstract:Lock step walker model is a one-dimensional integer lattice walker model in discrete time. Suppose that initially there are infinitely many walkers on the non-negative even integer sites. At each tick of time, each walker moves either to its left or to its right with equal probability. The only constraint is that no two walkers can occupy the same site at the same time. It is proved that in the large time limit, a certain conditional probability of the displacement of the leftmost walker is identical to the limiting distribution of the properly scaled largest eigenvalue of a random GOE matrix (GOE Tracy-Widom distribution). The proof is based on the bijection between path configurations and semistandard Young tableaux established recently by Guttmann, Owczarek and Viennot. Statistics of semistandard Young tableaux is analyzed using the Hankel determinant expression for the probability from the work of Rains and the author. The asymptotics of the Hankel determinant is obtained by applying the Deift-Zhou steepest-descent method to the Riemann-Hilbert problem for the related orthogonal polynomials.

Abstract:We study the fixed points of outer-totalistic cellular automata on sparse random regular graphs. These can be seen as constraint satisfaction problems, where each variable must adhere to the same local constraint, which depends solely on its state and the total number of its neighbors in each possible state. Examples of this setting include classical problems such as independent sets or assortative/dissasortative partitions. We analyse the existence and number of fixed points in the large system limit using the cavity method, under both the replica symmetric (RS) and one-step replica symmetry breaking (1RSB) assumption. This method allows us to characterize the structure of the space of solutions, in particular, if the solutions are clustered and whether the clusters contain frozen variables. This last property is conjectured to be linked to the typical algorithmic hardness of the problem. We bring experimental evidence for this claim by studying the performance of the belief-propagation reinforcement algorithm, a message-passing-based solver for these constraint satisfaction problems.

We find combinatorial bases for the eigenspaces of the transtion matrix, and derive a formula for the average vertex mixing matrix. We then explore properties of this matrix when the marked vertices or unmarked vertices are neighborhood-equitable in the vertex-deleted subgraph.
