Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have driven the development of polycrystalline membranes in the field of gas separation owing to the strong adsorption-desorption behavior and stable framework structure. However, the poor heterogeneous bonding ability between crystals and the substrate leads to the unsatisfactory gas separation as well as low stability of MOF membranes, especially in the humid environment. Herein, we prepared a thin and defect-free UiO-66 membrane by a crystal heterogeneous nucleation assisted growth strategy for efficient CO 2 /N 2 separation. The addition of small amount of water in the precursor solution promoted the crystal nucleation process on the substrate surface. Meanwhile, the smooth PDMS interlayer guaranteed the heterogeneous well-intergrown of crystals into thin UiO-66 membranes, and provided a hydrophobic environment. Therefore, the dense UiO-66 membrane with a small thickness exhibited a high CO 2 permeance (177.4 × 10 −9 mol·m −2 ·s −1 ·Pa −1 ) with moderate CO 2 /N 2 selectivity (24.3) under humid conditions. Furthermore, the prepared membrane demonstrated excellent renewable performance after dehumidification at high temperature, and maintained good hydrothermal stability during long-term operation under the humid environment. This work provides a new insight for the design of high-quality MOF membranes and promotes the development of MOF membranes in practical gas separation process.

Abstract:Graphene-based materials offer great potential in gas separation. However, it remains a challenge to control the interlayer structure to obtain membranes with high permeability. We describe a route for the fabrication of metal-organic framework (MOF) channelled graphene composite membranes with molecular sieving properties by in situ crystallization. Based on polar oxygen groups, extended interlayer spacing and electronegativity, MOF nanosheets can easily be impregnated into interlayers of reduced graphene oxide (rGO), which strongly anchor and bolster up rGO by coordination bonds to form a porous architecture with uniform nanochannels. The H-2/CO2 selectivity of ZIF-8/rGO membranes reached about 26.4. Moreover, many other MOF materials were also inserted between rGO sheets to obtain membranes with both high selectivity (larger than 10.3) and superior permeability (in the range of 73-21 112 barrer).

Abstract:High‐performance and durable membranes are being sought to enable energy‐efficient CO2 capture. Although representing an appealing candidate for the above application, successful translation of distinct properties of MOF filler into hybrid composite membranes (HCMs) remains challenging. In this study, we synthesized uniform hollow defect‐engineered UiO‐66 nanoparticles as filler for enhancing the CO2/N2 separation performance and durability of Pebax‐2533 membranes. The existence of missing‐linker defects in the framework not only endows HCMs with higher CO2/N2 adsorption selectivity but also provides ultrafast CO2 transport pathways; moreover, hollow structure of UiO‐66 not only contributes to better filler dispersibility in polymeric matrix but also reduces CO2 diffusion path length. Obtained HCMs manifest concurrently increased CO2 permeability (3100 Barrer) and CO2/N2 separation factor (44), far exceeding state‐of‐the‐art 2019 upper bound for polymer membranes; moreover, our membranes exhibit enhanced resistance toward plasticization, physical aging, and water vapors under harsh operation conditions.

Abstract:Mixing a polymer matrix and nanofiller to prepare a mixed matrix membrane (MMM) is an effective method for enhancing gas separation performance. In this work, a unique UiO-66-decorated halloysite nanotubes composite material (UiO-66@HNT) was successfully synthesized via a solvothermal method and dispersed into the Pebax-1657 matrix to prepare MMMs for CO2/N2 separation. A remarkable characteristic of this MMM was that the HNT lumen provided the highway for CO2 diffusion due to the unique affinity of UiO-66 for CO2. Simultaneously, the close connection of the UiO-66 layer on the external surface of HNTs created relatively continuous pathways for gas permeation. A suite of microscopy, diffraction, and thermal techniques was used to characterize the morphology and structure of UiO-66@HNT and the membranes. As expected, the embedding UiO-66@HNT composite materials significantly improved the separation performances of the membranes. Impressively, the as-obtained membrane acquired a high CO2 permeability of 119.08 Barrer and CO2/N2 selectivity of 76.26. Additionally, the presence of UiO-66@HNT conferred good long-term stability and excellent interfacial compatibility on the MMMs. The results demonstrated that the composite filler with fast transport pathways designed in this study was an effective strategy to enhance gas separation performance of MMMs, verifying its application potential in the gas purification industry.

Abstract:Metal–organic framework (MOF) membranes used for gas separation have attracted considerable attention recently. Although there are studies focusing on their continuous growth on inorganic substrates, MOF–polymer membranes are in demand because of their low cost, high processing ability and large membrane area. To achieve this purpose, the flexibility of the polymer must be reduced and the MOF-to-substrate adhesion strength should be greatly enhanced. Herein, a continuous and well inter-grown Cu3(BTC)2–PAN composite membrane has been successfully fabricated by directly growing via a covalent linker. Dehydrogenation, cyclization and crosslinking reactions of the PAN hollow fiber by solvothermal treatment can greatly improve the stiffness and compression strength of the composite membrane. To increase the adhesion strength effectively, a covalent linker between the MOF layer and PAN substrate is provided by chemical modification. The prepared membrane achieves a high H2 permeance of 7.05 × 10−5 mol (m−2 s−1 Pa−1) and a good separation factor of 7.14 for binary H2–CO2 mixtures with high thermal and pressure stability. Our strategy has also been developed for preparing a continuous and well inter-grown ZIF-8–PAN membrane. A very thin ZIF-8 layer is finally synthesized due to the large number of nucleation sites on the substrate. All of these distinguished properties suggest that MOF–PAN composite membranes fabricated by chemical modification are promising candidates for gas separation.

Abstract:Interface compatibility is crucial to performance and robustness of nanocomposite membranes for molecular separation. In this work, a covalent crosslinking method was exploited to fabricate polydimethylsiloxane/metal-organic-frameworks (PDMS/MOFs) mixed matrix membranes with improved interfacial compatibility. Zirconium MOF particles (UiO-66-NH2) were grafted with methoxysilane groups, which further formed covalent crosslinks with silanol terminated PDMS matrix. The strengthened interfacial compatibility prevented sedimentation and aggregation of MOF particles in PDMS precursor solution during the solvent evaporation process, thus the composites showed good membrane formation ability at high MOFs loading (60 wt%). Tensile strength of the hybrid membrane is 2.8 times improved while retaining good flexibility. Moreover, the CO2/N2 selectivity and CO2 permeability of the PDMS composite membrane incorporated with 40 wt% UiO-66-MS particles are improved by 1.3 times and 0.7 times, respectively.

Abstract:In this work, a new composite materials of graphene oxide (GO)-incorporated metal-organic framework (MOF)(UiO-66-NH2/GO) were in-situ synthesized, and were found to exhibit enhanced high performances for CO2 capture. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), N-2 physical adsorption, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were applied to investigate the crystalline structure, pore structure, thermal stability, and the exterior morphology of the composite. We aimed to investigate the influence of the introduction of GO on the stability of the crystal skeleton and pore structure. Water, acid, and alkali resistances were tested for physical and chemical properties of the new composites. CO2 adsorption isotherms of UiO-66, UiO-66-NH2, UiO-66/GO, and UiO-66-NH2/GO were measured at 273 K, 298 K, and 318 K. The composite UiO-66-NH2/GO exhibited better optimized CO2 uptake of 6.41 mmol/g at 273 K, which was 5.1% higher than that of UiO-66/GO (6.10 mmol/g). CO2 adsorption heat and CO2/N-2 selectivity were then calculated to further evaluate the CO2 adsorption performance. The results indicated that UiO-66-NH2/GO composites have a potential application in CO2 capture technologies to alleviate the increase in temperature of the earth's atmosphere.

Abstract:The excessive release of CO2 from the burning of fossil fuels is of great concern, and effective treatment methods are urgently needed to solve the resulting crisis. Membrane-based separation processes have attracted significant attention due to their advantages, such as low investment cost, low energy consumption, and ease of operation. Herein, composite organosilica membranes were fabricated via co-polymerization reactions between bis(triethoxysilyl)acetylene (BTESA), bis(triethoxysilyl)benzene (BTESB), and 4,4′-bis(triethoxysilyl)-1,1′-biphenyl (BTESBPh). Then, dynamic light scattering (DLS), Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectrometry, and sorption measurements were used to assess the evolution of the network structures. We found that the addition of BTESB into BTESA densified membrane structures, while the co-polymerization reactions between BTESA and BTESBPh increased membrane pore sizes. Thus, all membranes exhibited great potential for CO2 capture and would be competitive candidates as suitable membrane materials for CO2 treatment applications.

Abstract:Most metal–organic‐framework‐ (MOF‐) based hybrid membranes face the challenge of low gas permeability in CO2 separation. This study presents a new strategy of interweaving UiO‐66 and PIM‐1 to build freeways in UiO‐66‐CN@sPIM‐1 membranes for fast CO2 transport. In this strategy, sPIM‐1 is rigidified via thermal treatment to make polymer voids permanent, and concurrently polymer chains are mutually linked onto UiO‐66‐CN crystals to minimize interfacial defects. The pore chemistry of UiO‐66‐CN is kept intact in hybrid membranes, allowing full utilization of MOF pores and selective adsorption for CO2. Separation results show that UiO‐66‐CN@sPIM‐1 membranes possess exceptionally high CO2 permeability (15433.4–22665 Barrer), approaching to that of UiO‐66‐NH2 crystal (65–75% of crystal‐derived permeability). Additionally, the CO2/N2 permeation selectivity for a representative membrane (23.9–28.6) moves toward that of single crystal (24.6–29.6). The unique structure and superior CO2/N2 separation performance make UiO‐66‐CN@sPIM‐1 membranes promising in practical CO2 separations.

Abstract:Functionalized mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) have the potential to upgrade the separation performance of conventional polymeric membranes while as yet keeping their processing benefits and lower costs. This study investigated the highly stable zirconium based metal-organic framework UiO-66 functionalized with sulfonic group, which was grafted by silane coupling agent mercaptopropyl trimethoxysilane. Sulfonic group imparted high separation properties to UiO-66. Polysulfone (PSf) was used as a polymer matrix and MMMs were synthesized for non-functionalized and functionalized UiO-66; and their results were compared. The characterization and permeation results ascribed that functionalized UiO-66 adhered well with the PSf matrix. The results demonstrated that increasing sulfonic group concentration resulted in higher selectivities owing to their high affinity towards CO2 gas molecules. The MMMs exhibited high CO2 permeabilities and selectivities under pure and mixed gas conditions; and proved this material promising for CO2 separation. In order to evaluate the practical commercial viability of these MMMs, investigation was conducted under different temperatures and compared with existing literature.
Heteroatom-doped noble carbons tailored mixed matrix membrane with ultrapermeability for efficient CO2 separation

Abstract:Membranes with ultrapermeability for CO2 are desired for future large-scale carbon capture projects, because of their excellent separative productivity and economic efficiency. Heteroatom-doped noble carbons with surprisingly unique properties and low costs have proven their value in many sorption and electrochemistry applications and may also be promising for membrane science. Here we demonstrate that a membrane with ultrapermeability for CO2 can be constructed by combining N/O para-doped noble carbons, C2NxO1-x, with high-permeability polymer PIM-1. The optimal PIM-1/C2NxO1-x membranes exhibit a superior CO2 permeability (22110 Barrer) with a CO2/N2 selectivity of 15.5, and an unprecedented CO2 permeability of 37272 Barrer can be obtained after a PEG activation treatment, far surpassing the 2008 upper bound. Both broad experiments and molecular dynamics simulations were conducted to reveal the CO2 separation mechanism of PIM-1/C2NxO1-x membranes. It is reasoned that the numerous ordered polar channels of C2NxO1-x and their excellent compatibility with PIM-1 are responsible for the superior CO2 separation performance of the membrane. Although this is the first study on C2N-type gas separation membranes, the outstanding results indicate that noble carbon building blocks may pave a new avenue to advance high-performance CO2 separation membranes.

Abstract:Coke oven gas (COG) is considered to be one of the most likely raw materials for large-scale H2 production in the near or medium term, with membrane separation technologies standing out from traditional technologies due to their less energy-intensive structures as well as simple operation and occupation. Based on the "MOF-in/on-COF" pore modification strategy, the COF membrane (named the PBD membrane) and ZIF-67 were used as assembly elements to design advanced molecular sieving membranes for hydrogen separation. The composition and microstructure of membranes before and after ZIF-67 loading as well as ZIF-67-in-PBD membranes under different preparation conditions (metal ion concentration, metal-ligand ratio, and reaction time) were investigated by various characterizations to reveal the synthesis regularity and microstructure regulation. Furthermore, H2/CH4 separation performances and separation mechanisms were also analyzed and compared. Finally, a dense, continuous, ultrathin, and self-supporting ZIF-67-in-PBD membrane with a Co2+ concentration of 0.02 mol/L, a metal-ligand ratio of 1:4, and a reaction time of 6 h exhibited the largest specific surface area, micropore proportion, and the best H2/CH4 separation selectivity (α = 33.48), which was significantly higher than the Robeson upper limit and was in a leading position among reported MOF membranes. The separation mechanism was mainly size screening, and adsorption selectivity also contributed a little.
Assembly-Dissociation-Reconstruction Synthesis of Covalent Organic Framework Membranes with High Continuity for Efficient CO2 Separation

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs), at the forefront of porous materials, hold tremendous potential in membrane separation; however, achieving high continuity in COF membranes remains crucial for efficient gas separation. Here, we present a unique approach termed assembly-dissociation-reconstruction for fabricating COF membranes tailored for CO2/N2 separation. A parent COF is designed from two-node aldehyde and three-node amine monomers and dissociated to high-aspect-ratio nanosheets. Subsequently, COF nanosheets are orderly reconstructed into a crack-free membrane by surface reaction under water evaporation. The membrane exhibits high crystallinity, open pores and a strong affinity for CO2 adsorption over N2, resulting in CO2 permeance exceeding 1060 GPU and CO2/N2 selectivity surpassing 30.6. The efficacy of this strategy offers valuable guidance for the precise fabrication of gas-separation membranes.

Abstract:Mixed matrix composite membranes (MMCMs) have shown advantages in reducing VOCs and CO2 emissions. Suitable composite layer, substrate, and good compatibility between the filler and the matrix in the composite layer are critical issues in designing MMCMs. This work develops a high-performance UiO-66-NA@PDMS/MCE for VOCs adsorption and CO2 permea-selectivity, based on a simple and facile fabrication of composite layer using amidation-reaction approach on the substrate. The composite layer shows a continuous morphological appearance without interface voids. This outstanding compatibility interaction between UiO-66-NH2 and PDMS is confirmed by molecular simulations. The SiO functional group and UiO-66-NH2 in the layer leads to improved VOCs adsorption via active sites, skeleton interaction, electrostatic interaction, and van der Waals force. The layer and CONH also facilitate CO2 transport. The MMCMs show strong four VOCs adsorption and high CO2 permeance of 276.5 GPU with a selectivity of 36.2. The existence of VOCs in UiO-66-NA@PDMS/MCE increases the polarity and fine-tunes the pore size of UiO-66-NH2, improving the affinity towards CO2 and thus promoting the permea-selectivity for CO2, which is further verified by GCMC and EMD methods. This work is expected to offer a facile composite layer manufacturing method for MMCMs with high VOC adsorption and CO2 permea-selectivity.
