Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs), which are a new class of porous organic materials, are considered as potential candidates for separation membranes because of their regular channels and tailored functionality. The imine-linked COF was synthesized using reversible condensation reactions, resulting in its un-stabilization in the acid environment. Thus, it is a formidable challenge to develop stable COFs membranes for applications in harsh environments (e.g. strong acid). Herein, we demonstrated the in-situ construction of acid-stable COF separating layer (TMTATGCl) on the surface of the hydrophilic hydrolyzed polyacrylonitrile (HPAN) substrate via acid-catalyzed interfacial polymerization. Triaminoguanidine chloride (TGCl), a cationic monomer, was used to construct cationic nanochannels in the COF layer, conferring its screening feature toward cations, especially toward divalent cations. Besides, implanted methoxy groups could facilitate H+ diffusion along the pore pathway of the as-prepared COF. As a result, the methoxy functionalized cationic nanochannels of the DMTATGCl/HPAN enhanced H+ transfer, while other ions (e.g. Fe2+) were obstructed, allowing for high selectivity (S =1248.9) and permeability (UH+ = 0.0118 m/h). Moreover, the membranes (TMTATGCl/HPAN) exhibited remarkable acid-stability, which maintained the high separation performance after 10 cycles under strong-acid conditions. This study provides an effective strategy for developing the ion channels membrane with specific interaction sites for effective ion separation.

Abstract:Abstract Covalent organic frameworks (COF), with rigid, highly ordered and tunable structures, can actively manipulate the synergy of entropic selectivity and enthalpic selectivity, holding great potential as next-generation membrane materials for ion separations. Here, we demonstrated the efficient separation of monovalent cations by COF membrane. The channels of COF membrane are decorated with three different kinds of acid groups. A concept of confined cascade separation was proposed to elucidate the separation process. The channels of COF membrane comprised two kinds of domains, acid-domains and acid-free-domains. The acid-domains serve as confined stages, rendering high selectivity, while the acid-free-domains preserve the pristine channel size, rendering high permeation flux. A set of descriptors of stage properties were designed to elucidate their effect on selective ion transport behavior. The resulting COF membrane acquired high ion separation performances, with an actual selectivity of 4.2–4.7 for K + /Li + binary mixtures and an ideal selectivity of ~13.7 for K + /Li + .

Efficient Ion Sieving in Covalent Organic Framework Membranes with Sub‐2‐Nanometer Channels

Abstract:Membranes of sub-2-nanometer channels show high ion transport rates, but it remains a great challenge to design such membranes with desirable ion selectivities for ion separation applications. Here, covalent organic framework (COF) membranes with a channel size of ≈1.4 nm and abundant hydrogen bonding sites, exhibiting efficient ion sieving properties are demonstrated. The COF membranes have high monovalent cation permeation rates of 0.1–0.2 mol m−2 h−1 and extremely low multivalent cation permeabilities, leading to high monovalent over divalent ion selectivities for K+/Mg2+ of ≈765, Na+/Mg2+ of ≈680, and Li+/Mg2+ of ≈217. Experimental measurements and theoretical simulations reveal that the hydrogen bonding interaction between hydrated cations and the COF channel wall governs the high selectivity, and divalent cations transport through the channel needs to overcome higher energy barriers than monovalent cations. These findings provide an effective strategy for developing sub-2-nanometer sized membranes with specific interaction sites for high-efficiency ionic separation.

Abstract:Isoporous nanomaterials, with their proven potential for accurate molecular sieving, are of substantial interest in propelling sustainable membrane techniques. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are prominent due to their customizable isopores and chemistry. Still, the discrepancy in experimental and theoretical structures poses a challenge to developing COF membranes for molecular separations. Here, we report high-selectivity sieving of complex ultrafine molecules through solvating pore-to-pore-aligned two-dimensional COF membranes. Our structurally oriented membrane shows reversible interlayer expansion with intralayer shift in response to solvent exposure. This dynamic deformation induced by solvents leads to a reduction in the aperture of the membrane's sieving pores, which correlates with the number of COF layers. The resultant membranes yield largely improved molecular selectivity to discriminate binary and trinary complex mixtures, exceeding the conventional COF membranes. The membrane's robustness against solvents and physical aging permits extremely stable microporosity and reliable operation for over 3000 h. This exceptional performance positions our membrane as an alternative to enriching and purifying value-added chemicals, such as active pharmaceutical ingredients.

Abstract:Covalent organic framework (COF) membranes with one‐dimensional (1D) channels (≈1.4 nm) and abundant cationic charge sites show a remarkable mono/divalent cation permselectivity, where transport of hydrated bivalent cations is retarded due to i) electrostatic repulsion and ii) steric exclusion while monovalent cations can pass easily the nanoscale 1D COF pores. Artificial membranes with ion‐selective nanochannels for high‐efficiency mono/divalent ion separation are of great significance in water desalination and lithium‐ion extraction, but they remain a great challenge due to the slight physicochemical property differences of various ions. Here, the successful synthesis of two‐dimensional TpEBr‐based covalent organic framework (COF) nanosheets, and the stacking of them as consecutive membranes for efficient mono/divalent ion separation is reported. The obtained COF nanosheet membranes with intrinsic one‐dimensional pores and abundant cationic sites display high permeation rates for monovalent cations (K+, Na+, Li+) of ≈0.1–0.3 mol m−2 h−1, while the value of divalent cations (Ca2+, Mg2+) is two orders of magnitude lower, resulting in an ultrahigh mono/divalent cation separation selectivity up to 130.4, superior to the state‐of‐the‐art ion sieving membranes. Molecular dynamics simulations further confirm that electrostatic interaction controls the confined transport of cations through the cationic COF nanopores, where multivalent cations face i) strong electrostatic repulsion and ii) steric transport hindrance since the large hydrated divalent cations are retarded due to a layer of strongly adsorbed chloride ions at the pore wall, while smaller monovalent cations can swiftly permeate through the nanopores.

Abstract:The creation of uniformly molecular-sized through-pores within polymeric membranes and the direct evidence of these pores are essential for fundamentally understanding the transport mechanism and improving separation efficiency. Herein, we report an electric-field-assisted interface synthesis approach to fabricating large-area covalent organic framework (COF) membranes that consist of preferentially oriented single-crystalline COF domains. These single-crystalline frameworks were translated into high-density, vertically aligned through-pores across the entire membrane, enabling the direct visualization of membrane pores with an ultrahigh resolution of 2 Å using the low-dose high-resolution transmission electron microscopy technique (HRTEM). The density of directly visualized through-pores was quantified to be 1.2 × 1017 m-2, approaching theoretical predictions. These COF membranes demonstrate ultrahigh solvent permeability, which is 10 times higher than that of state-of-the-art organic solvent nanofiltration membranes. When applied to high-value pharmaceutical separations, their COF membranes exhibit 2 orders of magnitude higher methanol permeance and 20-fold greater enrichment efficiency than their commercial counterparts.

Abstract:Continuous covalent organic framework (COF) thin membranes have garnered broad concern over the past few years due to their merits of low energy requirements, operational simplicity, ecofriendliness, and high separation efficiency in the application process. This study marks the first instance of fabricating two distinct, self-supporting COF membranes from identical building blocks through solvent modulation. Notably, the precision of the COF membrane's separation capabilities is substantially enhanced by altering the pore alignment from a random to a vertical orientation. Within these confined channels, the membrane with vertically aligned pores and micron-scale stacking thickness demonstrates rapid and selective transportation of Li+ ions over Na+ and K+ ions, achieving Li+/K+ and Li+/Na+ selectivity ratios of 38.7 and 7.2, respectively. This research not only reveals regulated orientation and layer stacking in COF membranes via strategic solvent selection but also offers a potent approach for developing membranes specialized in Li+ ion separation.

Abstract:Permanently microporous materials have evolved as focal point of research for tackling issues in separation science and membrane technology. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) stand out for their distinctive synergy of crystalline nature, uniform channels, and structural diversities. Three-dimensional (3D) COFs, distinguished by angstrom-sized and interconnected channels, hold special promise for separating small targets; however, this potential remains underexplored. Here, we report feasible growth of cationic 3D COF membranes on a flexible polymer substrate for versatile nanofiltration toward both molecules and ions. Through comprehensive performance evaluations, we reveal that the resultant membrane exhibits durable and prominent molecular selectivity to separate fine species with molecular weights above 300 g mol-1 at fast methanol permeation. Lanthanide ions of industrial value also can be harvested by the membrane with rejection rates of up to 91.4%. Together with its nonselectivity to competing ions, our membrane implements efficient extraction of rare earth elements from ion mixtures. These findings illuminate the potential of 3D COFs for liquid separation and offer a solution to building versatile membranes.

Abstract:The development of simple, versatile strategies for the synthesis of metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived membranes are of increasing scientific interest, but challenges exist in understanding suitable fabrication mechanisms. Here we report a route for the complete transformation of a series of MOF membranes and particles, based on multivalent cation substitution. Through our approach, the effective pore size can be reduced through the immobilization of metal salt residues in the cavities, and appropriate MOF crystal facets can be exposed, to achieve competitive molecular sieving capabilities. The method can also be used more generally for the synthesis of a variety of MOF membranes and particles. Importantly, we design and synthesize promising MOF membranes candidates that are hard to achieve through conventional methods. For example, our CuBTC/MIL-100 membrane exhibits 89, 171, 241 and 336 times higher H2 permeance than that of CO2, O2, N2 and CH4, respectively.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) featuring uniform topological structure and devisable functionality have emerged as promising membrane materials. The design and precise manipulation of COF membranes with advanced spatial structure to achieve efficient liquid molecular separations are of great necessity. Herein, zwitterionic COF membranes have been in-situ fabricated on porous polymeric substrates using an interfacial polymerization modification strategy. The continuous defect-free COF membranes with two-dimensional inplane dominant growth can be achieved by optimizing the fabrication parameters including reaction time, monomer concentration, and catalyst concentration. Subsequent zwitterionic modification thereon not only favors the formation of hydrophilic surface but also improves the sieving capability by sheltering effect. Attributed to the synergistic contribution, the optimized zwitterionic COF membrane possesses a superior separation factor of 2839 with the water content in the permeate up to 99.7 wt%, while maintaining a comparable permeation flux of 3309 g m- 2 h- 1 during the ethanol dehydration process, outperforming most of other representative membranes. Furthermore, the excellent durability of the zwitterionic COF membrane in the ethanol dehydration process and its efficient separation performance towards other alcohol dehydration systems demonstrate its potential practical applications. The easy scalability of the fabrication and regulation method offers crucial guidance for the engineering of advanced COF membranes in efficient liquid molecular separations.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks are potential candidates for the preparation of advanced molecular separation membranes due to their porous structure, uniform aperture, and chemical stability. However, the fabrication of continuous COF membranes in a facile and mild manner remains a challenge. Herein, a continuous, defect-free, and flexible azine-linked ACOF-1 membrane was prepared on a hydrolyzed polyacrylonitrile (HPAN) substrate via in situ interfacial polymerization (IP). A moderately crystalline COF ultrathin selective layer enabled ultrafast molecular sieving. The effect of synthesis parameters including precursor concentration, catalyst dosage, and reaction duration on the dye separation performance was investigated. The optimized membrane displayed an ultrahigh water permeance of 142 L m-2 h-1 bar-1 together with favorable rejection (e.g., 99.2% for Congo red and 96.3% for methyl blue). The water permeance is 5-12 times higher than that of reported membranes with similar rejections. In addition, ACOF-1 membranes demonstrate outstanding long-term stability together with organic solvent and extreme pH resistance. Meanwhile, the membrane is suitable for removing dyes from salt solution products owing to their nonselective permeation for hydrated salt ions (<10.6%). The superior performance and the excellent chemical stability render the ACOF-1 membrane a satisfactory system for water purification.

Abstract:Precise and ultra-fast ion selective sieving technology can be applied to solution purification, strategic element extraction, valuable ion recovery, and other ion fractionation fields, which are crucial to the sustainable development of the economy and society. As a key link for achieving specific ion selective sieving, the emerging membrane materials constructed by modified covalent organic frameworks (COFs) has been attracted extensive attention and become a hot spot in recent years. As a typical class of crystalline porous materials, COFs contain periodically extended and covalently bound network structures. The specific structures and the tailorable organic linkers endow COFs with tunable pore size and structure as well as facilely-tailored functionality so that it can contribute to achieve precise ion sieving. Herein, we trace recent developments in COF membranes in the context of selective ion sieving, aim to elaborated on the design ideas and synthesis strategies of COF membranes based on ion separation mechanisms such as pore size sieving, electrostatic repulsion, chemical affinity, and biomimetic ion channels. Moreover, the demonstrated applications of COF membranes for mono/polyvalent metal cation sieving, halogen/inorganic acid ion sieving, and acid wastewater recovery are discussed, which have achieved excellent ion sieving effect in the laboratory testing process. Finally, the application prospects and challenges (membrane stability, crystallinity, and antifouling performance) facing COF membrane development in the context of ion sieving are summarized.

Abstract:Abstract Synthetic framework materials have been cherished as appealing candidates for separation membranes in daily life and industry, while the challenges still remain in precise control of aperture distribution and separation threshold, mild processing methods, and extensive application aspects. Here, we show a two-dimensional (2D) processible supramolecular framework (SF) by integrating directional organic host-guest motifs and inorganic functional polyanionic clusters. The thickness and flexibility of the obtained 2D SFs are tuned by the solvent modulation to the interlayer interactions, and the optimized SFs with limited layers but micron-sized areas are used to fabricate the sustainable membranes. The uniform nanopores allow the membrane composed of layered SF to exhibit strict size retention for substrates with the rejection value of 3.8 nm, and the separation accuracy within 5 kDa for proteins. Furthermore, the membrane performs high charge selectivity for charged organics, nanoparticles, and proteins, due to the insertion of polyanionic clusters in the framework skeletons. This work displays the extensional separation potentials of self-assembled framework membranes comprising of small-molecules and provides a platform for the preparation of multifunctional framework materials due to the conveniently ionic exchange of the counterions of the polyanionic clusters.

Abstract:Two dimensional nanomaterials have provided immense potential for separation applications to relieve the trade-off relationship between selectivity and permeability. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are highly compatible with polymers, which can be used to obtain defect free membranes with high flux and enhanced separation performance. The state-of-the-art COF-based membranes are concluded and discussed in this review based on their preparation method and application domains. The structure of nanochannels within the COF-based membranes, the separation performance, and COF design for accurate molecular sieving were discussed. Developing novel COFs with new linkages and binding blocks and COFs with functional groups greatly broadens its application in membrane separation. Although challenges are still in front that need to be conquered, the rapid development of COF forming technologies and its applications in membrane separation can serve as a valuable platform for future applications of such new types of porous materials. The variation of COFs' structure and properties can provide the COF-based separation process numerous possibilities on membrane design, modification, and application, which finally serve for practical applications.

Abstract:Membrane separation has become an indispensable separation technology in social production, playing an important role in drug production, water purification, etc. The key core of membranes lies in achieving efficient and precise sieving between substances. As a result, a typical trade‐off arises: highly permeable membranes usually sacrifice selectivity and vice versa. To address this dilemma, long‐term research has focused on comprehensive understanding and modelling of synthetic membranes at various scales. A significant advancement in this arena is the advent of three‐dimensional covalent organic framework (3D COF) membranes, a novel category of long‐range ordered porous organic polymer materials. Characterized by an abundance of interconnected channels, diverse pore wall properties, tunable structures, and robust thermal and chemical resilience, 3D COF membranes offer a promising approach for efficient substance separation. This review undertakes a meticulous investigation of the synthesis and physicochemical properties of 3D COF membranes, accentuating the underlying design principles, fabrication methods, and application attempts. A comprehensive assessment of their research trajectory and current standing in the field of membrane processes is provided. The review culminates in a forward‐looking outlook, summarizing future research directions and highlighting the substantial potential of this innovative work to shape the future of efficient membrane separation processes.

Abstract:Abstract 3D ionic covalent organic framework (COF) membranes, which are envisioned to be able to break the trade-off between ion conductivity and ion selectivity, are waiting for exploitation. The 3D SCOF membranes possess highly interconnected ion transport channels, ultramicroporous pore sizes (0.97 nm), and abundant sulfonate groups (with a high ion exchange capacity of 4.1 mmol g −1 ), leading to high proton conductivity of 843 mS cm −1 at 90 °C. When utilized in osmotic energy conversion, a high power density of 21.2 W m −2 , and a remarkable selectivity of 0.976 and thus an exceptional energy conversion efficiency of 45.3% are simultaneously achieved. This work provides an alternative approach to 3D ionic COF membranes and promotes the applications of 3D COFs in ion transport and separation.

Abstract:Abstract The preparation of subnanoporous covalent-organic-framework (COF) membranes with high performance for ion/molecule sieving still remains a great challenge. In addition to the difficulties in fabricating large-area COF membranes, the main reason is that the pore size of 2D COFs is much larger than that of most gas molecules and/or ions. It is urgently required to further narrow their pore sizes to meet different separation demands. Herein, we report a simple and scalable way to grow large-area, pliable, free-standing COF membranes via a one-step route at organic–organic interface. The pore sizes of the membranes can be adjusted from >1 nm to sub-nm scale by changing the stacking mode of COF layers from AA to AB stacking. The obtained AB stacking COF membrane composed of highly-ordered nanoflakes is demonstrated to have narrow aperture (∼0.6 nm), uniform pore distribution and shows good potential in organic solvent nanofiltration, water treatment and gas separation.
