Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are an emerging class of organic porous crystalline materials that are composed entirely by organic linkers and connected by strong covalent bonds. The unique characteristics including well‐ordered and tailorable pore channels, high and permanent porosity, excellent thermostability and chemical stability, and ease of functionalization enable COFs to perfectly meet the requirements for the fabrication of advanced separation membranes. Significant progress has been made in the preparation and application of COF membranes over the past few years. Herein, the structure—performance relationship of COF materials on membrane separation is first proposed. The effects of the intrinsic properties of COF materials on membrane separation performance are systematically summarized. The fabrication methods of COF membranes, including both bottom‐up strategy (in situ growth and interface‐assisted synthesis) and top‐down strategy (blending and layer‐by‐layer [LBL] stacking), are then discussed in detail. The application of COF membranes in gas separation (H 2 purification, CO 2 capture, hydrocarbon separation) and liquid phase separation (water treatment, organic solvent nanofiltration, pervaporation) is highlighted. Finally, the remaining challenges and issues to be resolved in the COF membranes are prospected from the perspective of COF materials.

Abstract:Abstract The preparation of subnanoporous covalent-organic-framework (COF) membranes with high performance for ion/molecule sieving still remains a great challenge. In addition to the difficulties in fabricating large-area COF membranes, the main reason is that the pore size of 2D COFs is much larger than that of most gas molecules and/or ions. It is urgently required to further narrow their pore sizes to meet different separation demands. Herein, we report a simple and scalable way to grow large-area, pliable, free-standing COF membranes via a one-step route at organic–organic interface. The pore sizes of the membranes can be adjusted from >1 nm to sub-nm scale by changing the stacking mode of COF layers from AA to AB stacking. The obtained AB stacking COF membrane composed of highly-ordered nanoflakes is demonstrated to have narrow aperture (∼0.6 nm), uniform pore distribution and shows good potential in organic solvent nanofiltration, water treatment and gas separation.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with well-ordered nanopores and stable structures have excited exponential interest as potent membrane platforms for molecular separation in organic solvent systems. However, the fabrication of defect-free and crystalline COF membranes remains severely challenging due to the poor processibility of COF powders. Herein, we report the facile in situ synthesis of highly crystalline COF membranes on the confined surface of porous substrates via contra-diffusion interfacial polymerization. The continuous imine-linked COF membranes with high structural rigidity exhibited robust chemical stability in organic solvents. The variable membrane thickness was achieved by tailoring the initial monomer concentration. Notably, the synthesized COF membranes displayed tunable solvent permeance and solute rejection with a linear dependence on their thickness. The linear relationship between the membrane thickness and pore tortuosity was further demonstrated, enabling the reasonable prediction of solvent permeance based on the pore-flow model. Owing to the regular hexagonal nanochannels, the COF membrane exhibited precise molecular sieving capability toward molecules with varying dimensions in the organic solvent. This work showcases the immense potential of crystalline COF membranes for molecular separation in harsh organic solvents.

Abstract:Two dimensional nanomaterials have provided immense potential for separation applications to relieve the trade-off relationship between selectivity and permeability. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are highly compatible with polymers, which can be used to obtain defect free membranes with high flux and enhanced separation performance. The state-of-the-art COF-based membranes are concluded and discussed in this review based on their preparation method and application domains. The structure of nanochannels within the COF-based membranes, the separation performance, and COF design for accurate molecular sieving were discussed. Developing novel COFs with new linkages and binding blocks and COFs with functional groups greatly broadens its application in membrane separation. Although challenges are still in front that need to be conquered, the rapid development of COF forming technologies and its applications in membrane separation can serve as a valuable platform for future applications of such new types of porous materials. The variation of COFs' structure and properties can provide the COF-based separation process numerous possibilities on membrane design, modification, and application, which finally serve for practical applications.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs), at the forefront of porous materials, hold tremendous potential in membrane separation; however, achieving high continuity in COF membranes remains crucial for efficient gas separation. Here, we present a unique approach termed assembly-dissociation-reconstruction for fabricating COF membranes tailored for CO2/N2 separation. A parent COF is designed from two-node aldehyde and three-node amine monomers and dissociated to high-aspect-ratio nanosheets. Subsequently, COF nanosheets are orderly reconstructed into a crack-free membrane by surface reaction under water evaporation. The membrane exhibits high crystallinity, open pores and a strong affinity for CO2 adsorption over N2, resulting in CO2 permeance exceeding 1060 GPU and CO2/N2 selectivity surpassing 30.6. The efficacy of this strategy offers valuable guidance for the precise fabrication of gas-separation membranes.

Abstract:Herein, two self‐standing covalent organic framework (COF) membranes are successfully prepared by using steam‐assisted methods to overcome the difficult processing characteristics of COFs. Due to the abundant mass transfer channels and CO2 adsorption sites, these self‐standing membranes have excellent selectivity and ultra‐high H2 permeance in the separation of H2/CO2. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are proposed as promising candidates for engineering advanced molecular sieving membranes due to their precise pore sizes, modifiable pore environment, and superior stability. However, COFs are insoluble in common solvents and do not melt at high temperatures, which presents a great challenge for the fabrication of COF‐based membranes (COFMs). Herein, for the first time, a new synthetic strategy is reported to prepare continuous and intact self‐standing COFMs, including 2D N‐COF membrane and 3D COF‐300 membrane. Both COFMs show excellent selectivity of H2/CO2 mixed gas (13.8 for N‐COF membrane and 11 for COF‐300 membrane), and especially ultrahigh H2 permeance (4319 GPU for N‐COF membrane and 5160 GPU for COF‐300 membrane), which is superior to those of COFMs reported so far. It should be noted that the overall separation performance of self‐standing COFMs exceeds the Robeson upper bound. Furthermore, a theoretical study based on Grand Canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulation is performed to explain the excellent separation of H2/CO2 through COFMs. Thus, this facile preparation method will provide a broad prospect for the development of self‐standing COFMs with highly efficient H2 purification.

Abstract:Exceptionally homogeneous and ultrathin COF membranes were successfully fabricated using exfoliated COF nanosheets with uniform perforations as membrane building blocks. The COF membranes showed highly permeable performance due to the ultrafast molecular diffusion through the perforations of the COF nanosheets and the excellent thermal stability due to the robust covalent bonds in the framework.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs), with their regularly organized structures and solvent resistance, offer distinct advantages for constructing liquid-phase separation membranes. In nearly a decade of development, research has mainly focused on two-dimensional (2D) COFs, which yet give insufficient molecular selectivity due to inherent large pores. Here, we present a mixed-dimensional strategy of growing three-dimensional (3D) COFs on 2D COFs to build bilayered membranes for efficient organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN). The pores of 3D COFs interlace with those of 2D counterparts, resulting in a subnanoporous composite. We develop this 3D-/2D-COFs composite as robust membranes with a nanoscale thickness. The optimal bilayered membrane yields ethanol permeance of 12.2 L m(-2) h(-1) bar(-1) with a molecular weight cutoff as low as similar to 400 g mol(-1), surpassing conventional COF-based OSN membranes. Importantly, the designed 3D-/2D-COFs membrane exhibits stable separation performance and excellent sieving ability to discriminate molecular mixtures. This exceptional molecular selectivity ultimately allows the separation of bioactive pharmaceuticals from impurities through our membrane. Overall, this work provides a design strategy for producing mixed-dimensional COF membranes to advance molecular separation in liquids.

Abstract:Continuous covalent organic framework (COF) thin membranes have garnered broad concern over the past few years due to their merits of low energy requirements, operational simplicity, ecofriendliness, and high separation efficiency in the application process. This study marks the first instance of fabricating two distinct, self-supporting COF membranes from identical building blocks through solvent modulation. Notably, the precision of the COF membrane's separation capabilities is substantially enhanced by altering the pore alignment from a random to a vertical orientation. Within these confined channels, the membrane with vertically aligned pores and micron-scale stacking thickness demonstrates rapid and selective transportation of Li+ ions over Na+ and K+ ions, achieving Li+/K+ and Li+/Na+ selectivity ratios of 38.7 and 7.2, respectively. This research not only reveals regulated orientation and layer stacking in COF membranes via strategic solvent selection but also offers a potent approach for developing membranes specialized in Li+ ion separation.

Abstract:Covalent organic framework(COF) membranes have exhibited great potential to become the next-generation membranes for efficient separations due to the diverse structures, ordered framework pores, tunable functionality and excellent stability. This review presents the microstructure manipulation strategies for separation performance enhancement of COF membranes in recent years. Based on the three mechanisms of molecular sieving, surface diffusion, and facilitated transport, the structural modulation methods to enhance the selectivity of COF membranes are analyzed in detail. Next, strategies of realizing ultrashort mass transfer pathways and ultralow mass transfer resistance for the permeability enhancement are elaborated. Furthermore, the framework stability in COFs, interlayer stability between COF nanosheets and interfacial stability between COF layer and substrate are discussed. Finally, we discuss the existing challenges and perspectives on the future development of COF membranes, targeting at identifying the most promising strategies and directions for the engineering of COF membranes.

Abstract:Three-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (3D COFs) have emerged as a promising class of crystalline materials due to large surface areas, interconnected porosity, and accessible active sites. Their structural versatility, enabled by the judicious selection of organic building blocks, allows for precise tuning of pore size, architecture, and functionality. These unique attributes position 3D COFs as ideal candidates for the development of tailored membrane materials capable of high-performance separations. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the synthesis methodologies and applications of 3D COF-based membranes. The critical role of their pore size, topology, stability, hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity and surface charge on membrane structure and performance is examined. In addition, various fabrication methods for 3D COF-based membranes (e.g., blending, in situ growth, and interfacial polymerization) are presented. The usage of 3D COF-based membranes in diverse fields such as gas separation, water treatment, organic solvent nanofiltration, pervaporation, and proton exchange is also outlined. The review concludes by identifying key challenges and outlining future research directions for advancing the field of 3D COF-based membranes.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) featuring uniform topological structure and devisable functionality have emerged as promising membrane materials. The design and precise manipulation of COF membranes with advanced spatial structure to achieve efficient liquid molecular separations are of great necessity. Herein, zwitterionic COF membranes have been in-situ fabricated on porous polymeric substrates using an interfacial polymerization modification strategy. The continuous defect-free COF membranes with two-dimensional inplane dominant growth can be achieved by optimizing the fabrication parameters including reaction time, monomer concentration, and catalyst concentration. Subsequent zwitterionic modification thereon not only favors the formation of hydrophilic surface but also improves the sieving capability by sheltering effect. Attributed to the synergistic contribution, the optimized zwitterionic COF membrane possesses a superior separation factor of 2839 with the water content in the permeate up to 99.7 wt%, while maintaining a comparable permeation flux of 3309 g m- 2 h- 1 during the ethanol dehydration process, outperforming most of other representative membranes. Furthermore, the excellent durability of the zwitterionic COF membrane in the ethanol dehydration process and its efficient separation performance towards other alcohol dehydration systems demonstrate its potential practical applications. The easy scalability of the fabrication and regulation method offers crucial guidance for the engineering of advanced COF membranes in efficient liquid molecular separations.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are a promising candidate for advanced water treatment membranes due to their numerous benefits, such as adjustable pore diameters, high crystallinity, chemical stability, and a well-organized channel structure. Liquid–liquid interfacial polymerization is an effective method for COF membrane synthesis owing to its comparatively milder reaction conditions and efficient collection of products from the reaction system. However, the fabrication of continuous COF membranes at a non-alkane/water interface remains a formidable task due to membrane flaws caused by solvent evaporation and the restriction of water-soluble monomers. At the alkane/ionic liquid interface, we synthesized two self-standing, flexible, imine-linked COF membranes with different thicknesses and morphologies. The ionic liquid as a solvent can dissolve various amines, and polyamide nanofilms can be formed by the intermolecular reaction between amines and trimesoyl chloride. The freestanding ultrathin selective membrane is created with continuous, defect-free, and vast areas of up to 2 cm in diameter wafer-scale pore sizes as ultrafast molecular sieving. The membrane exhibited an extremely high water flow of 67.37 L m–2 h–1 bar–1 as well as an excellent rejection (98.7% for methylene blue). The resulting polyamide nanofilms displayed ultrahigh water permeability and good dye rejection selectivity.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with tunable pore sizes and ordered structures are ideal materials for engineering nanofiltration (NF) membranes. However, most of the COFs prepared by solvothermal synthesis are unprocessable powders and fail to form well-structured membranes, which seriously hinders the development of COF NF membranes. Herein, colloidal 2D-COFs with processable membrane formation ability were synthesized by oil-in-water emulsion interfacial polymerization technology. COF NF membranes with tailored thickness and surface charge were fabricated via a layer-by-layer (LBL) assembly strategy. The prepared COF NF membrane achieved precise sieving of dye molecules with high permeance (85 L·m-2·h-1·bar-1). In this work, the strategy of prepared COF NF membranes based on colloid 2D-COF LBL assembly is proposed for the first time, which provides a new idea for the on-demand design and preparation of COF membranes for precise molecular sieving.

Abstract:Membrane technology has evolved as an alternative candidate for CO2 separation due to their inherent attributes, such as high energy efficiency, small capital investment, and environmentally benign characteristics. The key point of developing advanced membranes with satisfied performance is to find the balance between selectivity and permeability. Recently, advanced porous open framework materials, especially covalent organic frameworks (COFs), have attracted much attentions in academia and industry due to their high porosity, large surface area and regular pore size. Moreover, their adjustable pore size, diversify topological structure and sieving capacity further endowed them with unprecedented opportunities for efficient CO2 separation. This mini-review concluded and discussed the fabrication strategies as well as CO2 separation properties of COFs-based membranes in the past five years (from 2014 to present). The opportunities and challenges in the related fields are also summarized.

Abstract:Membrane separation has become an indispensable separation technology in social production, playing an important role in drug production, water purification, etc. The key core of membranes lies in achieving efficient and precise sieving between substances. As a result, a typical trade‐off arises: highly permeable membranes usually sacrifice selectivity and vice versa. To address this dilemma, long‐term research has focused on comprehensive understanding and modelling of synthetic membranes at various scales. A significant advancement in this arena is the advent of three‐dimensional covalent organic framework (3D COF) membranes, a novel category of long‐range ordered porous organic polymer materials. Characterized by an abundance of interconnected channels, diverse pore wall properties, tunable structures, and robust thermal and chemical resilience, 3D COF membranes offer a promising approach for efficient substance separation. This review undertakes a meticulous investigation of the synthesis and physicochemical properties of 3D COF membranes, accentuating the underlying design principles, fabrication methods, and application attempts. A comprehensive assessment of their research trajectory and current standing in the field of membrane processes is provided. The review culminates in a forward‐looking outlook, summarizing future research directions and highlighting the substantial potential of this innovative work to shape the future of efficient membrane separation processes.

Abstract:Isoporous nanomaterials, with their proven potential for accurate molecular sieving, are of substantial interest in propelling sustainable membrane techniques. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are prominent due to their customizable isopores and chemistry. Still, the discrepancy in experimental and theoretical structures poses a challenge to developing COF membranes for molecular separations. Here, we report high-selectivity sieving of complex ultrafine molecules through solvating pore-to-pore-aligned two-dimensional COF membranes. Our structurally oriented membrane shows reversible interlayer expansion with intralayer shift in response to solvent exposure. This dynamic deformation induced by solvents leads to a reduction in the aperture of the membrane's sieving pores, which correlates with the number of COF layers. The resultant membranes yield largely improved molecular selectivity to discriminate binary and trinary complex mixtures, exceeding the conventional COF membranes. The membrane's robustness against solvents and physical aging permits extremely stable microporosity and reliable operation for over 3000 h. This exceptional performance positions our membrane as an alternative to enriching and purifying value-added chemicals, such as active pharmaceutical ingredients.

Abstract:Abstract Covalent organic frameworks (COF), with rigid, highly ordered and tunable structures, can actively manipulate the synergy of entropic selectivity and enthalpic selectivity, holding great potential as next-generation membrane materials for ion separations. Here, we demonstrated the efficient separation of monovalent cations by COF membrane. The channels of COF membrane are decorated with three different kinds of acid groups. A concept of confined cascade separation was proposed to elucidate the separation process. The channels of COF membrane comprised two kinds of domains, acid-domains and acid-free-domains. The acid-domains serve as confined stages, rendering high selectivity, while the acid-free-domains preserve the pristine channel size, rendering high permeation flux. A set of descriptors of stage properties were designed to elucidate their effect on selective ion transport behavior. The resulting COF membrane acquired high ion separation performances, with an actual selectivity of 4.2–4.7 for K + /Li + binary mixtures and an ideal selectivity of ~13.7 for K + /Li + .

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) show advantageous characteristics, such as an ordered pore structure and a large surface area for gas storage and separation, energy storage, catalysis, and molecular separation. However, COFs usually exist as difficult-to-process powders, and preparing continuous, robust, flexible, foldable, and rollable COF membranes is still a challenge. Herein, such COF membranes with fiber morphology for the first time prepared via a newly introduced template-assisted framework process are reported. This method uses electrospun porous polymer membranes as a sacrificial large dimension template for making self-standing COF membranes. The porous COF fiber membranes, besides having high crystallinity, also show a large surface area (1153 m2 g−1), good mechanical stability, excellent thermal stability, and flexibility. This study opens up the possibility of preparation of large dimension COF membranes and their derivatives in a simple way and hence shows promise in technical applications in separation, catalysis, and energy in the future.
