Abstract:The structure, properties, synthesis of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) were reviewed. Monofunctional, difunctional and multifunctional POSS, which can be easily incorporated into common plastics via copolymerization, grafting, or blending to form truly inorganic/organic hybrid nanostructural composites, were mainly discussed. Finally, the development trends of POSS were put forward.

Abstract:Soft building blocks, such as micelles, cells or soap bubbles, tend to adopt near-spherical geometry when densely packed together. As a result, their packing structures do not extend beyond those discovered in metallic glasses, quasicrystals and crystals. Here we report the emergence of two Frank–Kasper phases from the self-assembly of five-fold symmetric molecular pentagons. The μ phase, an important intermediate in superalloys, is indexed in soft matter, whereas the φ phase exhibits a structure distinct from known Frank–Kasper phases in metallic systems. We find a broad size and shape distribution of self-assembled mesoatoms formed by molecular pentagons while approaching equilibrium that contribute to the unique packing structures. This work provides insight into the manipulation of soft building blocks that deviate from the typical spherical geometry and opens avenues for the fabrication of 'soft alloy' structures that were previously unattainable in metal alloys.

Abstract:Self-assembly of rigid building blocks with explicit shape and symmetry is substantially influenced by the geometric factors and remains largely unexplored. We report the selective assembly behaviors of a class of precisely defined, nanosized giant tetrahedra constructed by placing different polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) molecular nanoparticles at the vertices of a rigid tetrahedral framework. Designed symmetry breaking of these giant tetrahedra introduces precise positional interactions and results in diverse selectively assembled, highly ordered supramolecular lattices including a Frank-Kasper A15 phase, which resembles the essential structural features of certain metal alloys but at a larger length scale. These results demonstrate the power of persistent molecular geometry with balanced enthalpy and entropy in creating thermodynamically stable supramolecular lattices with properties distinct from those of other self-assembling soft materials.
Symmetry-Dictated Mesophase Formation and Phase Diagram of Perfluorinated Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxanes

Abstract:We report the symmetry-dictated mesophase formation and phase diagram of a series of T-8-polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) derivatives bearing perfluoroalkyl chains and hydroxyl alkyl groups. The phase structures and phase behaviors of these molecular Janus particles were studied by DSC, POM, FT-IR, and WAXD experiments. It was found that introducing one hydroxyl alkyl group leads to a decreased crystal melting point, and incorporating two hydroxyl alkyl groups at different POSS positions causes the formation of lamellar liquid crystal mesophases with feature sizes and transition temperatures that depend on the symmetry of these regioisomers. Interestingly, installing only one substituent with two hydroxyl groups leads to monotropic phase transitions, where the mesophase appears only upon cooling from the isotropic melt within the narrow supercooling window. Phase diagrams were systematically constructed for these compounds and understood based on the fine influence of symmetry on their possible molecular packing scheme and their distinct hydrogen bonding patterns, as evidenced by their infrared spectra at different temperatures. These results are not only fundamental to understanding the effects of regioisomerism on giant molecule self-assembly but also important for the development of hybrid materials with tailored nanostructures.
POSS-Containing Jacketed Polymer: Hybrid Inclusion Complex with Hierarchically Ordered Structures at Sub-10 Nm and Angstrom Length Scales

Abstract:A series of organic-inorganic hybrid polymers, PnPOSS (n = 6, 10, which is the number of carbon atoms in the flexible alkyl spacers), containing a mesogen-jacketed liquid crystalline polymer (MJLCP) as the main chain and a crystalline nanobuilding block, polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS), in the side chains were designed and synthesized for constructing a hybrid inclusion complex. The phase structures and phase transitions of PnPOSS were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, polarized light microscopy, wide-angle X-ray diffraction, small-angle X-ray scattering, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. With the competitive self-assemblies of the two covalently connected building blocks, namely MJLCP and POSS moieties, PnPOSS shows various phase structures including a sub-10 nm hexagonal columnar (Col(h)) or columnar nematic liquid crystalline phase, an angstrom rhombohedral crystalline (KR) phase, and a hierarchically ordered phase with Col(h) and K-R coexisting. This work provides a new approach for the design and synthesis of hybrid inclusion materials.
Unprecedented Self-Assembly of Precise Molecular Particles

Abstract:Atomic self-assembly in pure metals and metal alloys can lead into various conventional (cubic, hexagonal closepacked (hcp), and icosahedron) and non-conventional (Frank–Kasper and quasicrystal [1]) structures. The nonconventional crystalline structures often lead to unexpected physical properties. For example, the A15 (A3B type) Frank– Kasper phase of Nb3Sn, Nb3Zr and Nb3Ti are found to be superconducting. Metallic quasicrystals are hard and have low-friction, low-thermal conductivity, and special electronic properties. Beyond the atomic self-assembly, computer simulations have predicted many complex self-assembled structures, such as Frank–Kasper phases and quasicrystals, as a function of shape, size, and interaction for nanoparticles (Fig. 1) [2]. However, it has been challenging to experimentally achieve these structures from both hard (colloidal particles and mixtures) and soft (hierarchically self-assembled surfactants, dendrimers, and micellar block copolymers) nanoparticles. This is because precise shape, size, and interaction for colloidal nanoparticles are still difficult to control. In a recent report by Huang et al. Abstract:Reanalysis of an asymmetric poly(ethylene-alt-propylene)-block-polydimethylsiloxane (PEP-PDMS) diblock copolymer first investigated in 1999 has revealed a rich phase behavior including a dodecagonal quasicrystal (DDQC), a Frank-Kasper σ phase, and a body-centered cubic (BCC) packing at high temperature adjacent to the disordered state. On subjecting the sample to large amplitude oscillatory shear well below the σ-BCC order-order transition temperature (TOOT), small-angle X-ray scattering evidenced the emergence of a twinned BCC phase that, on heating, underwent a phase transition to an unusually anisotropic DDQC state. Surprisingly, we observe no evidence of this apparent epitaxy on heating or cooling through the equilibrium σ-BCC transition. We rationalize these results in terms of a shear-induced order-order transition and an apparent BCC-DDQC epitaxy favored by micelle translation-mediated ordering dynamics far below TOOT.
Seeing Mesoatomic Distortions in Soft-Matter Crystals of a Double-Gyroid Block Copolymer

Abstract:Supramolecular soft crystals are periodic structures that are formed by the hierarchical assembly of complex constituents, and occur in a broad variety of ‘soft-matter’ systems 1 . Such soft crystals exhibit many of the basic features (such as three-dimensional lattices and space groups) and properties (such as band structure and wave propagation) of their ‘hard-matter’ atomic solid counterparts, owing to the generic symmetry-based principles that underlie both 2 , 3 . ‘Mesoatomic’ building blocks of soft-matter crystals consist of groups of molecules, whose sub-unit-cell configurations couple strongly to supra-unit-scale symmetry. As yet, high-fidelity experimental techniques for characterizing the detailed local structure of soft matter and, in particular, for quantifying the effects of multiscale reconfigurability are quite limited. Here, by applying slice-and-view microscopy to reconstruct the micrometre-scale domain morphology of a solution-cast block copolymer double gyroid over large specimen volumes, we unambiguously characterize its supra-unit and sub-unit cell morphology. Our multiscale analysis reveals a qualitative and underappreciated distinction between this double-gyroid soft crystal and hard crystals in terms of their structural relaxations in response to forces—namely a non-affine mode of sub-unit-cell symmetry breaking that is coherently maintained over large multicell dimensions. Subject to inevitable stresses during crystal growth, the relatively soft strut lengths and diameters of the double-gyroid network can easily accommodate deformation, while the angular geometry is stiff, maintaining local correlations even under strong symmetry-breaking distortions. These features contrast sharply with the rigid lengths and bendable angles of hard crystals.

Abstract:Frank-Kasper (F-K) and quasicrystal phases were originally identified in metal alloys and only sporadically reported in soft materials. These unconventional sphere-packing schemes open up possibilities to design materials with different properties. The challenge in soft materials is how to correlate complex phases built from spheres with the tunable parameters of chemical composition and molecular architecture. Here, we report a complete sequence of various highly ordered mesophases by the self-assembly of specifically designed and synthesized giant surfactants, which are conjugates of hydrophilic polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane cages tethered with hydrophobic polystyrene tails. We show that the occurrence of these mesophases results from nanophase separation between the heads and tails and thus is critically dependent on molecular geometry. Variations in molecular geometry achieved by changing the number of tails from one to four not only shift compositional phase boundaries but also stabilize F-K and quasicrystal phases in regions where simple phases of spheroidal micelles are typically observed. These complex self-assembled nanostructures have been identified by combining X-ray scattering techniques and real-space electron microscopy images. Brownian dynamics simulations based on a simplified molecular model confirm the architecture-induced sequence of phases. Our results demonstrate the critical role of molecular architecture in dictating the formation of supramolecular crystals with "soft" spheroidal motifs and provide guidelines to the design of unconventional self-assembled nanostructures.
Diverse superlattices constructed via perylene bisimide type of giant shape amphiphiles: Assisted with unimolecular nanoparticles

Abstract:Complex superlattices formed by spherical motifs in soft matter have attracted more interest in the last two decades. Herein, we report the supramolecular assembly behaviors of four types of giant shape amphiphiles composed of perylene bisimide and isooctyl-polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (OPOSS) with different linkages. The glass forming temperatures of these giant shape amphiphiles decrease from 10.3 °C to -14.3 °C with increasing of the linker length. These giant molecules can self-assemble into well-ordered Frank-Kasper (FK) A15 phases. Furthermore, blending with unimolecular nanoparticles, diverse superlattices including FK (such as Laves C15, also called MgCu 2 ) and quasi-FK (such as NaZn 13 ) phases are found. This work could provide a basic understanding towards the phase behaviors of spherical motifs constructed by giant molecules, as well as supports our previous findings about binary blending in complex superlattices formation.

Abstract:A poly(methyloctadecylsilane) oligomer was synthesized by a typical Wurtz coupling reaction. Upon cooling, three transitions were observed at temperatures of 39.9, 37.5 and 33.9 degreesC at a rate of 2.5 degreesC/min in differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The first transition, with enthalpy change of 0.47 kT/mol and supercooling of 0.2 degreesC, was characteristic of the conformational change in the Si-Si backbone into an all-trans conformation, which was detected by temperature-dependent Fourier transform infrared (FT-FR) spectroscopy. The second and the third transitions with large supercooling were identified as the formation of two-dimensional hexagonal crystal packing and three-dimensional two-chain orthorhombic crystal packing, respectively. Abstract:Man's exploration of the microstructure of matter has never stopped,and understanding how particles stack up in space is still remaining a great challenge for scientists and technicians. The soft matter often shows abundant self-assembly morphologies and phase topological structures due to the drive of weak intermolecular interactions and the competition of entropic enthalpies. Among them,Frank-Kasper phases are the most fascinating,which have complex topologically dense stacking structures. As a transition state between crystal and quasicrystal,the Frank-Kasper phase has a kind of complex spherical phase structure with a dense icosahedral shell and a high coordination number (CN=14,15,16). The soft matter offers novel molecular and self-assembled structures for study of Frank-Kasper phase. This paper presents a brief review of the research process on soft matters such as small molecule surfactants,block copolymers, dendritic macromolecules and giant amphiphilic molecules that can form Frank-Kasper phases. These soft matters can be used as a material for studying the spatial accumulation of non-homogeneous and deformable soft spheres. The Frank-Kasper phase plays a crucial role in the mechanism of soft matter self-assembling into complex topological close-packing structures,which should contribute to understanding the growth mechanism of quasicrystals.

Abstract:The bicontinuous double gyroid phase is one of the nature's most symmetric and complex structures, the electron density map of which was established long ago. By utilizing small-angle x-ray scattering, resonant soft x-ray scattering at the carbon K edge and model-dependent tensor-based scattering theory, we have not only elucidated morphology but also identified molecular packing in the double gyroid phases formed by molecules with different shapes, i.e., rodlike vs taper shaped, thus validating some of the hypothetical packing models and disproving others. The spatial variation of molecular orientation through the channel junctions in the double gyroid phase can be either continuous in the case of anisotropic channels or discontinuous in the case of isotropic channels depending on the molecular structure and shape.

Abstract:Hybrids consisting of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) and hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene (HBC) with a dumbbell topology and C-2 symmetry were designed and synthesized. They self-assemble into 5 nm ordered structures. In particular, the increased steric effect with increasing POSS units stabilizes a square columnar phase (Col(squ)) which is important in nanotemplating. These hybrids containing discotic liquid crystal HBC and POSS units have an excellent etching contrast and present an approach to obtain 5 nm nanopatterns.

Abstract:: Molecular nanoparticles have attracted significant research interests due to their unique physical and chemical properties. In this article, we report the synthesis of a Janus molecular nanoparticle based on polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) by a facile two-step click procedure, its self-assembly in the bulk and its phase behaviors. The Janus molecular nanoparticle oom -T 8 F 5 (OH) 3 has three hydroxylalkyl groups on the same plane of the POSS cube and five perfluoroalkyl chains on the rest vertexes. The Janus configuration was characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometry. Further investigation revealed that the molecule has a wide region of hexagonal columnar (Col h ) liquid crystal mesophase resulting from the collective hydrogen bonding interactions. In addition, due to the highly asymmetric distribution of the perfluoroalkyl tails, direct crystallization from the melt results in a metastable state which, upon heating, can further re-organize into a more stable crystalline state. This stable crystalline state is accessible only upon heating, but not upon cooling, which is a typical monotropic phase transition behavior. We also found that shearing in the Col h phase can align the molecules and help develop into the more stable crystalline state. Overall, this work provides fundamental understanding for the self-assembly and phase behaviors of Janus molecular particles and may shed light into the design and development of hybrid nanomaterials in the future.

Abstract:Among the various ordered morphologies self-assembled from block copolymers, the spherical packing phases are particularly interesting because they resemble the familiar atomic crystals. The commonly observed spherical morphology of block copolymers is the body-centered-cubic phase. Recently, a number of novel spherical packing phases, i.e., the complex Frank-Kasper phases originally obtained in metallic alloys, have been observed in block copolymer melts. Theoretical studies have revealed that conformational asymmetry of the different blocks provides a key mechanism to stabilize the Frank-Kasper phases. Furthermore, local segregation of different copolymers in blends of diblock copolymers and copolymer architectures provides additional mechanisms to enhance the stability of the complex ordered phases. In this Viewpoint we summarize recent advances in our understanding of the formation of the nonclassical spherical packing phases in AB-type block copolymers, emphasizing the formation mechanisms of these fascinating complex ordered structures.
Stable Frank-Kasper phases of self-assembled, soft matter spheres

Abstract:Single molecular species can self-assemble into Frank Kasper (FK) phases, finite approximants of dodecagonal quasicrystals, defying intuitive notions that thermodynamic ground states are maximally symmetric. FK phases are speculated to emerge as the minimal-distortional packings of space-filling spherical domains, but a precise quantitation of this distortion and how it affects assembly thermodynamics remains ambiguous. We use two complementary approaches to demonstrate that the principles driving FK lattice formation in diblock copolymers emerge directly from the strong-stretching theory of spherical domains, in which minimal inter-block area competes with minimal stretching of space-filling chains. The relative stability of FK lattices is studied first using a diblock foam model with unconstrained particle volumes and shapes, which correctly predicts not only the equilibrium {\sigma} lattice, but also the unequal volumes of the equilibrium domains. We then provide a molecular interpretation for these results via self-consistent field theory, illuminating how molecular stiffness regulates the coupling between intra-domain chain configurations and the asymmetry of local packing. These findings shed new light on the role of volume exchange on the formation of distinct FK phases in copolymers, and suggest a paradigm for formation of FK phases in soft matter systems in which unequal domain volumes are selected by the thermodynamic competition between distinct measures of shape asymmetry.

The CTCs were characterized by experimental and theoretical calculation, indicating that the F-K A15 cubic lattice possesses a unit cell containing 8 sphere-like supramolecules, each of which was self-assembled from 3 CTC molecules. The lattice constant was only 3.2 nm, which is by far the smallest one for the A15 phase. Interestingly, the supramolecular assembly can be regarded as the molecular column splitting into isolated spherical fragments, impeding the charge transfer and turning it into one insulator. This provides a simple and effective method for preparing asymmetric complex compounds for the design of unconventional self-assembled nanostructures.

Abstract:A series of unique heterofunctionalized asymmetric giant "bolaform-like" surfactants composed of a polystyrene (PS) chain end-capped with two distinctly functionalized polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) cages [one with seven isobutyl groups (BPOSS) and the other with 14 hydroxyl groups (DPOSS)] were designed and synthesized, and their self-assembly behaviors were investigated. Combining the atomic transfer radical polymerization using a BPOSS-containing initiator and the sequential "click" approach, BPOSS-PSn-DPOSS samples with different PS molecular weights were obtained. Investigation on their self-assembly behaviors revealed that they could form a variety of different ordered structures, such as lamellae, double gyroids, hexagonally packed cylinders, and body-center-cubic spheres, with feature sizes around or below 10 nm. Functional groups on the POSS cages govern the interaction parameters of different POSS cages with the PS interconnect and thus their compatibility. Hydrophilic DPOSS cages are phase-separated from the PS domains, while BPOSS cages are favorably associated within the PS domains. However, in the lamellae phase where the geometry of confinement seems compatible with the close-packing of BPOSS, the BPOSS cages tend to crystallize due to the existence of the flat interfaces, leading to further phase separation of the BPOSS cages from the PS interconnects. These results provide insights into the design of novel self-assembling materials based on POSS polymer conjugates toward desired physical properties.

Abstract:The design, synthesis, and self-assembly of a series of precisely defined, nonspherical, polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS)-based molecular Janus particles are reported. The synthesis aims to fulfill the "click" philosophy by using thiol-ene chemistry to efficiently install versatile functionalities on one of the POSS cages. In such a way, both the geometrical and chemical symmetries were broken to create the Janus feature. These particles self-organize into hierarchically ordered supramolecular structures in the bulk. For example, the Janus particle with isobutyl groups on one POSS and carboxylic groups on the other self-assembles into a bilayered structure with head-to-head, tail-to-tail arrangements of each particle, which further organize into a three-dimensional orthorhombic lattice. While the ordered structure in the layers was lost upon heating via a first-order transition, the bilayered structure persisted throughout. This study provides a model system of well-defined molecular Janus particles for the general understanding of their self-assembly and hierarchical structure formation in the condensed state.
