Abstract:Semicrystalline polymers are categorized as either mobile or fixed crystals, depending on chain mobility in the crystalline region. In this work, we investigate molecular dynamics and phase structure in the cocrystal consisting of fixed and mobile polymer crystals by solid-state (ss) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. It is demonstrated that (i) the mobile component begins large amplitude motions associated with crystal-crystal transition, while fixed ones keep their rigidity in the cocrystal, and (ii) asymmetric molecular dynamics leads to nanosegregations into mobile- and fixed-rich domains in the cocrystal below the melting temperature (Tm). The observed phase separation induced by asymmetric molecular dynamics is similar to the phase separation of the miscible amorphous polymer blend; however, it is limited to two dimensions due to the parallel packing of the stems inside the cocrystal, as well as chain connectivity at the crystalline-amorphous boundary.
Understanding the Seeded Heteroepitaxial Growth of Crystallizable Polymers: the Role of Crystallization Thermodynamics.

Abstract:Seeded heteroepitaxial growth is a "living" crystallization-driven self-assembly (CDSA) method that has emerged as a promising route to create uniform segmented nanoparticles with diverse core chemistries by using chemically distinct core-forming polymers. Our previous results have demonstrated that crystallization kinetics is a key factor that determines the occurrence of heteroepitaxial growth, but an in-depth understanding of controlling heteroepitaxy from the perspective of crystallization thermodynamics is yet unknown. Herein, we select crystallizable aliphatic polycarbonates (PxCs) with a different number of methylene groups (xCH2, x = 4, 6, 7, 12) in their repeating units as model polymers to explore the effect of lattice match and core compatibility on the seeded growth behavior. Seeded growth of PxCs-containing homopolymer/block copolymer blend unimers from poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) core-forming seed platelet micelles exhibits distinct crystal growth behavior at subambient temperatures, which is governed by the lattice match and core compatibility. A case of seeded growth with better core compatibility and a smaller lattice mismatch follows epitaxial growth, where the newly created crystal domain has the same structural orientation as the original platelet substrate. In contrast, a case of seeded growth with better core compatibility but a larger lattice mismatch shows nonepitaxial growth with less-defined crystal orientations in the platelet plane. Additionally, a case of seeded growth with poor core compatibility and larger lattice mismatch results in polydisperse platelet micelles, whereby crystal formation is not nucleated from the crystalline substrate. These findings reveal important factors that govern the specific crystal growth during a seeded growth approach by using compositionally distinct cores, which would further guide researchers in designing 2D segmented materials via polymer crystallization approaches.
Surface-induced Phase Transitions in Dense Nanoparticle Arrays of Lamella-Forming Diblock Copolymers

Abstract:The surface-induced phase transitions in dense nanoparticle arrays of lamella-forming diblock copolymers are investigated by using the real-space self-consistent field theory. The dense nanoparticle array provides a distinct and strong confinement environment where there are incomplete confinements in three spatial directions. Several complicated phases with cubic symmetries, such as the monocontinuous and bicontinuous phases, are identified in the dense nanoparticle arrays. Through adjusting the strength of surface preference, the disorder phases are induced into the complicated order phases in the nanoparticle arrays with small periods while the order–order transitions occurs in those with large periods. Investigations on the free and entropic energies indicate that these surface-induced phase transitions are of first-order and the stabilities of order phases are intimately correlated to the strength of surface preference. Our results enrich the knowledge about the phase behaviors of macromolecules in confined systems, which may be helpful to fabricate the novel nanomaterials based on the block copolymers.

Abstract:Nanostructure and morphology and their development of poly(di-n-hexylsilane) (PDHS) and poly(di-n-butylsilane) (PDBS) during the crystal-mesophase transition are investigated using small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), wide angle X-ray diffraction and hot-stage atomic force microscopy. At room temperature, PDHS consists of stacks of lamellae separated by mesophase layers, which can be well accounted using an ideal two-phase model. During the crystal-mesophase transition, obvious morphological changes are observed due to the marked changes in main chain conformation and intermolecular distances between crystalline phase and mesophase. In contrast to PDHS, the lamellae in PDBS barely show anisotropy in dimensions at room temperature. The nonperiodic structure and rather small electronic density fluctuation in PDBS lead to the much weak SAXS. The nonperiodic structure is preserved during the crystal-mesophase transition because of the similarity of main chain conformation and intermolecular distances between crystalline phase and mesophase. Abstract:A poly(methyloctadecylsilane) oligomer was synthesized by a typical Wurtz coupling reaction. Upon cooling, three transitions were observed at temperatures of 39.9, 37.5 and 33.9 degreesC at a rate of 2.5 degreesC/min in differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The first transition, with enthalpy change of 0.47 kT/mol and supercooling of 0.2 degreesC, was characteristic of the conformational change in the Si-Si backbone into an all-trans conformation, which was detected by temperature-dependent Fourier transform infrared (FT-FR) spectroscopy. The second and the third transitions with large supercooling were identified as the formation of two-dimensional hexagonal crystal packing and three-dimensional two-chain orthorhombic crystal packing, respectively. Abstract:Quasicrystalline (QC) phases have been observed in various condensed matter systems including self-assembling block copolymer (BCP) melts. Theoretical study of the thermodynamic stability of QC phases presents a long-standing unsolved problem because of the aperiodic nature of the structures. Here, we report a combination method to study the thermodynamic stability of two-dimensional dodecagonal quasicrystalline (DDQC) phase with both ideal tiling and random tiling patterns formed by ABCB tetrablock terpolymers. This method applies the self consistent field theory coupled with the Stampfli self-similarity construction to accurately calculate the free energy of the periodic DDQC approximants and then uses a cluster model to predict the stability of aperiodic DDQC phase. Surprisingly, we find a stable DDQC approximant but metastable ideal tiling DDQC structures. Moreover, the random tiling DDQC structures as a mesoscopic coexistence of two neighboring periodic substructures of DDQC might become stable.
Observation of Double Gyroid and Hexagonally Perforated Lamellar Phases in ABCBA Pentablock Terpolymers

Abstract:Three symmetric linear pentablock terpolymers, poly(tert-butyl acrylate-b-styrene-b-ethylene oxide-b-styrene-b-tert-butyl acrylate) (TzSyOxSyTz)) with similar lengths of PS (S) and PtBA (T) blocks on the two sides but various lengths of the PEO (O) block in the middle, namely, T95S62O46S62T95, T105S60O90S60T105, and T107S65O136S65T107, were synthesized from their corresponding parent triblock copolymers poly(styrene-b-ethylene oxide-b-styrene) (SyOxSy), that is, S62O46S62, S60O90S60, and S65O136S65. The phase behaviors of TzSyOxSyTz pentablock terpolymers were studied using synchrotron small-angle X-ray scattering and transmission electron microscopy. The PEO block length was found to significantly affect the phase structures of the obtained TzSyOxSyTz pentablock terpolymers. Although all three SyOxSy parent triblock copolymers were in disordered states, very interestingly, ordered structures were formed in all three TzSyOxSyTz pentablock terpolymers. Particularly, the double gyroid (Q(230)) network structure was experimentally observed for the first time in a symmetric linear ABCBA-type pentablock terpolymer, that is, T105S60O90S60T105. Moreover, the hexagonal perforated lamellae (HPL) structure was also observed in unsheared T107S65O136S65T107. Temperature-variable SAXS showed that T95S62O46S62T95 maintained an ordered lamellar phase structure in the temperature range of 25-210 degrees C, and an order-to-disorder transition occurred for T95S62O46S62T95 at around 170 degrees C. The HPL phase of T107S65O136S65T107 still partially remained with decreased ordering at a temperature of up to 210 degrees C.
Origins of Low-Symmetry Phases in Asymmetric Diblock Copolymer Melts.

Abstract:Cooling disordered compositionally asymmetric diblock copolymers leads to the formation of nearly spherical particles, each containing hundreds of molecules, which crystallize upon cooling below the order-disorder transition temperature (TODT). Self-consistent field theory (SCFT) reveals that dispersity in the block degrees of polymerization stabilizes various Frank-Kasper phases, including the C14 and C15 Laves phases, which have been accessed experimentally in low-molar-mass poly(isoprene)-b-poly(lactide) (PI-PLA) diblock copolymers using thermal processing strategies. Heating and cooling a specimen containing 15% PLA above and below the TODT from the body-centered cubic (BCC) or C14 states regenerates the same crystalline order established at lower temperatures. This memory effect is also demonstrated with a specimen containing 20% PLA, which recrystallizes to either C15 or hexagonally ordered cylinders (HEXC) upon heating and cooling. The process-path-dependent formation of crystalline order shapes the number of particles per unit volume, n/V, which is retained in the highly structured disordered liquid as revealed by small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) experiments. We hypothesize that symmetry breaking during crystallization is governed by the particle number density imprinted in the liquid during ordering at lower temperature, and this metastable liquid is kinetically constrained from equilibrating due to prohibitively large free energy barriers for micelle fusion and fission. Ordering at fixed n/V is enabled by facile chain exchange, which redistributes mass as required to meet the multiple particle sizes and packing associated with specific low-symmetry Frank-Kasper phases. This discovery exposes universal concepts related to order and disorder in self-assembled soft materials.

Abstract:The crystallization behavior of crystalline-crystalline (CC) diblock copolymers has been shown to be dependent on the crystallization temperature and relative molecular size leach component The behavior of copolymers with similar crystallization temperatures is controlled by the block with the larger weight fraction and solvent-polymer interactions Using samples of poly(ethylene oxide)-block-poly (epsilon-caprolacione) (PEO-b-PCL), dilute solution crystallization methods were investigated to determine their role in crystallization of CC copolymers A single crystal of one block, either PEO or PCL, (the first block), crystallized first with the second block segregated to the crystal basal surfaces For the first time, solvent quality and homopolymer seeds were in to manipulate crystallization of the block with the smaller weight fraction to crystallize first and form the lamellar single crystal In addition, subsequent crystallization of the tethered chains (the second block) on the surface was also observed, depending upon the molecular weight of the second block and crystallization conditions These crystallites formed by the second block exhibited preferred orientations on the crystal surface as observed by electron diffraction It is believed that this orientation was induced by "soft" epitaxy between the fold surfaces of the adjacent single crystals of the first block formed by the in crystallization.

Abstract:Temperature-dependent x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS) measurements are reported for a binary diblock-copolymer blend that self-assembles into an aperiodic dodecagonal quasicrystal and a periodic Frank-Kasper σ phase approximant. The measured structural relaxation times are Bragg scattering wavevector independent and are 5 times faster in the dodecagonal quasicrystal than the σ phase, with minimal temperature dependence. The underlying dynamical relaxations are ascribed to differences in particle motion at the grain boundaries within each of these tetrahedrally close-packed assemblies. These results identify unprecedented particle dynamics measurements of tetrahedrally coordinated micellar block polymers, thus expanding the application of XPCS to ordered soft materials. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.132.158101 © 2024 American Physical Society

Thermoreversible Order–Order Transition of a Diblock Copolymer Induced by the Unusual Coil–Rod Conformational Change of One Block

Abstract:Unusual liquid crystalline (LC) behavior and interesting nanophase separation behavior in the self-assemblies of a series of diblock copolymers (BCPs), poly( dim ethylsiloxane)-b-poly{2,S-bis [(4-butoxyphenyl)oxycarbonyl] styrene} (PDMS-b-PBPCS), were observed. The synthesized PDMS-b-PBPCS BCPs with PBPCS blocks of different molecular weights had volume fractions of PBPCS (f(PDPCS)'s) from 77% to 90%. At the molecular scale, the BCPs with f(PBPCS) values of 77% and 83% were in amorphous isotropic state in the entire temperature range studied, and thus, they were in coil-coil BCPs. For the BCPs with f(PBPCS) values of 87% and 90%, the PBPCS blocks displayed a thermodynamically stable isotropic phase at lower temperatures and an LC phase at higher temperatures. Therefore, they exhibited a transition from the coil coil to rod coil BCPs with increasing temperatures. At the nanophase structure scale, all of the BCPs were coil coil type and self-assembled into body-centered cubic (BCC) structures in the low temperature range. Moreover, some of the nanophase-separated structures of these BCPs could be thermoreversibly transformed by changing temperatures. For the BCPs with f(PBPCS) values between 77% and 83%, they remained BCC nanophase-separated structures during heating (up to 260 degrees C) as well as during subsequent cooling. For the BCPs with f(PBPCS) values of 87% and 90%, when the temperature was higher than the isotropic-to-LC transition temperatures of the PBPCS blocks, the new nanophase-separated hexagonally packed cylinder (HEX) structures started to form. However, only the nanophase-separated structure of the BCP with an f(PBPCS), value of 90% could completely transform to the HEX structure when the temperature reached 250 degrees C. As the temperature was reduced, the nanophase-separated structures of these two samples gradually reverted to the BCC structures below the LC-to-isotropic transition temperatures of the PBPCS blocks.

Abstract:Various microstructures and phase morphologies of an amphiphilic poly(ethylene oxide)-block-polyethylene (PEO-b-PE) co-oligomer, controlled by topological restriction of PE segments on the tethered PEO chains, were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarized optical microscopy (POM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and synchrotron radiation wide-angle/small-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS/SAXS) in drop-cast films. The crystallization processes were mediated by two pathways, a one-step crystallization process (I) and a sequential crystallization process (II). Results show that the thermal procedures have great influence on the microstructures and phase morphologies of PEO-b-PE co-oligomer, e. g., negative spherulites with radial stripes were detected in the one-step crystallization process (I), while crystalline texture, which contains a large number of crystals with reduced sizes, formed in the sequential crystallization process (II). Based on our experimental data, the topological restriction effect encountered by PEO chains depends on the hard confinement of PE crystals and the soft confinement of amorphous PE in the two crystallization procedures. The formation mechanisms of the long-range order structures within the co-oligomer were elucidated through morphology models. These nano-patterned structures make the double crystalline block copolymers outstanding candidates for surface modification, micromolding, and optoelectronic devices in nanotechnological and biomedical applications.
Solid State Phase Transitions in Poly(ethylene oxide) Crystals Induced by Designed Chain Defects

Abstract:We have used Cu(I)-catalyzed azide–alkyne cycloaddition to synthesize a new series of poly(ethylene oxide)s having in the center of their chains two 1,2,3-triazole (TR) rings separated by (CH2) n spacers with 2 ≤ n ≤ 4 (PEO11-TR-(CH2) n -TR-PEO11). The degree of crystallinity obtained by temperature-dependent WAXS measurements indicates that only one out of the two PEO11 chains of the three polymers forms a 72 helix upon cooling to −10 °C and crystallizes into a monoclinic unit cell known from PEO homopolymer. A solid-state phase transition occurs for all samples during heating below their melting temperature. Solid-state 13C MAS cross-polarization and single-pulse NMR spectroscopy indicate the complete incorporation of the chain defects into the PEO crystals (PEO-TR phase) during this transition. The 2D WAXS pattern of an oriented PEO11-TR-(CH2)2-TR-PEO11 sample generates a structural model where the crystal lattice of the initial PEO phase becomes highly distorted during the solid-state phase transition due to C–H···π interactions of the aromatic TR rings. Furthermore, an additional phase transition occurs for PEO11-TR-(CH2)4-TR-PEO11 after melting of the PEO-TR phase. This phase has complex characteristics; i.e., the typical 72 helix of PEO forms, but the two TR rings and the methylene groups of the alkyl spacer are in different chemical environments.

Stabilizing hexagonally close-packed phase in single-component block copolymers through rational symmetry breaking

Abstract:Despite being predicted to be a thermodynamically equilibrium structure, the absence of direct experimental evidence of hexagonally close-packed spherical phase in single-component block copolymers raises uncomfortable concerns regarding the existing fundamental phase principles. This work presents a robust approach to regulate the phase behavior of linear block copolymers by deliberately breaking molecular symmetry, and the hexagonally close-packed lattice is captured in a rigorous single-component system. A collection of discrete A1BA2 triblock copolymers is designed and prepared through an iterative growth method. The precise chemical composition and uniform chain length eliminates inherent size distribution and other molecular defects. Simply by tuning the relative chain length of two end A blocks, a rich array of ordered nanostructures, including Frank-Kasper A15 and σ phases, are fabricated without changing the overall chemistry or composition. More interestingly, hexagonally close-packed spherical phase becomes thermodynamically stable and experimentally accessible attributed to the synergistic contribution of the two end blocks. The shorter A blocks are pulled out from the core domain into the matrix to release packing frustration, while the longer ones stabilize the ordered spherical phase against composition fluctuation that tends to disrupt the lattice. This study adds a missing puzzle piece to the block copolymer phase diagram and provides a robust approach for rational structural engineering.

Abstract:Among the various ordered morphologies self-assembled from block copolymers, the spherical packing phases are particularly interesting because they resemble the familiar atomic crystals. The commonly observed spherical morphology of block copolymers is the body-centered-cubic phase. Recently, a number of novel spherical packing phases, i.e., the complex Frank-Kasper phases originally obtained in metallic alloys, have been observed in block copolymer melts. Theoretical studies have revealed that conformational asymmetry of the different blocks provides a key mechanism to stabilize the Frank-Kasper phases. Furthermore, local segregation of different copolymers in blends of diblock copolymers and copolymer architectures provides additional mechanisms to enhance the stability of the complex ordered phases. In this Viewpoint we summarize recent advances in our understanding of the formation of the nonclassical spherical packing phases in AB-type block copolymers, emphasizing the formation mechanisms of these fascinating complex ordered structures.
How Different Mesophases Affect the Interactive Crystallisation of a Block Co-Oligomer

Abstract:An effective method for fabrication of long range ordered micro- and nanostructures on surfaces is to control the interactive crystallisation of block copolymers. In this study, the influence of different initial mesophases of a double crystalline polyethylene-block-poly (ethylene oxide) (PE-b-PEO) diblock co-oligomer on the interactive crystallisation process was studied using synchrotron radiation X-ray diffraction (SAXS/WAXD), in situ optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetric analysis (DSC). According to the applied annealing procedure, different PE-b-PEO initial mesophases, i.e., disordered, cylindrical and spherical, have been induced. In all cases, the subsequent PEO crystallisation disrupted these initial microdomains and transformed them into crystalline lamellar morphologies with the same long periods. However, the different initial mesophases significantly affected the PEO crystallisation kinetics due to different topological confinements. An initial disordered mesophase induced the highest PEO crystallisation rate because PEO nucleation and crystal growth were limited only by chain diffusion. For an initial spherical or cylindrical mesophase, decreased PEO crystallisation rates were observed. Here, the chain diffusion was decreased by the microdomain structure. For an initial cylindrical mesophase, the earlier formed PE crystals act as a template for the subsequent PEO crystallisation and, thus, increased the PEO crystallisation as compared to the spherical mesophase where the PE was amorphous. This study demonstrates that the topological confinement of the block copolymer's initial mesophase strongly influences the crystallisation kinetics and, thus, the structures formed at the surface of drop-casted films.
Order-order transition induced by mesophase formation in a novel type of diblock copolymers based on poly(isobutyl methacrylate) and poly[2,5-di(isopropyloxycarbonyl)styrene]

Abstract:Novel diblock copolymers based on poly(isobutyl methacrylate) (PiBMA) and poly[2,5-di(isopropyloxycarbonyl) styrene] (PiPCS) were designed and prepared via consecutive atom transfer radical polymerization. They had relatively low molecular weight distributions and tunable molecular weights. The molecular characterization of the copolymers was performed with proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography, and thermogravimetric analysis. The phase structures and transitions were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering, and polarized optical microscopy experiments. A PiPCS block with a polymerization degree higher than 168, exhibited a stable hexagonal columnar liquid crystalline (Colh LC) phase, regardless of the length of PiBMA block. The PiPCS block underwent a coil-to-rod conformational change when it transformed into Colh LC phase. For the PiBMA-b-PiPCS diblock copolymer, this conformational transition resulted in a topological change from a coil-coil to a rod-coil type structure. With increasing PiPCS fraction, the block copolymers' microphase separated structure changed from an undetermined phase, to a lamellar phase, to a PiBMA columnar phase in the coil-coil system. The original microphase separated structure observed with coil PiPCS block could evolve into a lamellar morphology, with a significantly increased long period when PiPCS transformed into Colh LC phase. Thereafter it served as a rod in the block copolymers studied. This microphase separated structure transition was triggered by the coil-to-rod (isotropic-to-LC) transition and was irreversible due to the fact that the LC phase of PiPCS block remained at higher temperatures until decomposition.

Abstract:We report the unique phase behavior and structural transitions in thin films of a distorted network (DNW) nanostructure, which is an equilibrium phase contained in the bulk of a nearly-symmetric deuterated polystyrene-block-poly (methyl methacrylate), dPS-b-PMMA, block copolymer. The DNW is due to a broad dispersity for the PMMA block. Grazing incidence small-angle X-ray scattering, neutron reflectometry, atomic force microscopy and transmission electron microscopy techniques were used to characterize thermally-annealed dPS-b-PMMA ultrathin films with neutral boundaries at both the free surface and substrate interface. Brief thermal annealing imposed on the ultrathin films leads to perpendicular lamellae (L⊥). Upon increasing the duration of thermal annealing, the dPS-b-PMMA ultrathin films exhibit thickness dependence of phase transition kinetics and different irreversible routes of phase transition. As a result, the protracted thermal annealing of the thin films of various thicknesses produces either hexagonal arrays of perpendicular PMMA cylinders (HEX-C⊥) or disordered PMMA nanostructures (DIS). The phase transition routes and kinetics in ultrathin films suggest various possibilities to obtain diverse nanoscale patterns via thin film self-assembly.

Abstract:The thermodynamics and kinetics of the self-assembly of cylinder-forming diblock copolymers directed by the lateral confinement of hexagons have been studied by the combination of self-consistent field theory (SCFT) calculation and time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau (TDGL) theory simulation. The SCFT calculations are used to determine the stability of candidate 2D and 3D equilibrium phases formed in small-size hexagons. Our phase diagram predicts the existence of stable phase regions with respect to the hexagonal size, which is centered around the optimal size with an extent of about a period, for the phases of perfect hexagonal cylinders. Our TDGL simulations reveal that the ordering event, in which the structure evolves toward the perfect state, occurs stochastically according to the Poisson distribution, and the ordering time grows roughly with a power-law relation of the hexagonal size. This prediction is helpful to estimate the annealing time for larger systems with the knowledge of the annealing time of a small system in experiments.
Interplay of Crystallization and Liquid–liquid Phase Separation in Polyolefin Blends: A Thermal History Dependence Study

Abstract:The kinetic interplay between crystallization and liquid–liquid phase separation (LLPS) in random copolymer blends of poly(ethylene-ran-hexene) (PEH) and poly(ethylene-ran-butene) (PEB) has been studied using optical microscopy. Morphologies of blends gone through three different thermal histories are compared: (1) single-quench (SQ), a homogeneous melt quickly cooled to isothermal crystallization temperatures (Tcry), (2) double-quench (DQ), a homogeneous melt quickly cooled to an intermediate temperature (Tlps) between binodal and equilibrium melting temperature (Tm0) and stored for a period of time and then cooled to Tcry, and (3) cyclic-quench (CQ), a homogeneous melt quickly cooled to Tlps and stored for a period of time, then gone through four cycles of crystallization and remelting. Comparing DQ morphologies to SQ ones, both crystal growth rate and nucleation density in the former are affected by prior LLPS. A scaling argument has been provided to partially account for the observed phenomena. In CQ, characteristic lengths of secondary features induced by crystallization depend strongly on the overall PEH composition, whereas are insensitive to temperature cycling. The contrast of large domains becomes more prominent upon cyclic crystallization and remelting. On the other hand, primary LLPS domains coarsen with CQ while loosing the contrast.
