Abstract:In omnigeneous magnetic fields, charged particles are perfectly confined in the absence of collisions and turbulence. For this reason, the magnetic configuration is optimized to be close to omnigenity in any candidate for a stellarator fusion reactor. However, approaching omnigenity imposes severe constraints on the spatial variation of the magnetic field. In particular, the topology of the contours of constant magnetic-field-strength on each magnetic surface must be such that there are no particles transitioning between different types of wells. This, in turn, usually leads to complicated plasma shapes and coils. This Letter presents a new family of optimized fields that display tokamak-like collisional energy transport while having transitioning particles. This result radically broadens the space of accessible reactor-relevant configurations.

Abstract:To build an economically viable stellarator, it is essential to find a configuration that satisfies a set of favorable properties to achieve efficient steady-state nuclear fusion. One such property is omnigenity, which ensures confinement of trapped particles. After creating an omnigenous equilibrium, one must also ensure reduced transport resulting from kinetic and magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) instabilities. This study introduces and leverages the GPU-accelerated DESC optimization suite, which is used to design stable high-$\beta$ omnigenous equilibria, achieving Mercier, ideal ballooning, and enhanced kinetic ballooning stability. We explain the link between ideal and kinetic ballooning modes and discover stellarators with second stability, a regime of large pressure gradient where an equilibria becomes ideal ballooning stable.

Abstract:The stellarator is a type of fusion energy device that - if properly designed - could provide clean, safe, and abundant energy to the grid. To generate this energy, a stellarator must keep a hot mixture of charged particles (known as a plasma) sufficiently confined by using a fully shaped magnetic field. If this is achieved, the heat from fusion reactions within the plasma can be harvested as energy. We present a novel method for designing reactor-relevant stellarator magnetic fields, which combine several key physical properties. These include plasma stability, excellent confinement of the fast moving particles generated by fusion reactions, and reduction of the turbulence that is known to limit the performance of the most advanced stellarator experiment in the world, Wendelstein 7-X.

Abstract:The first stellarator design was a simple tube of plasma twisted and closed on itself in the form of a figure-8. The line of such devices, however, was quickly ended over concerns related to plasma stability. We revisit the figure-8 concept, re-imagined as a modern optimized stellarator, and find the potential for a high degree of stability, as well as exceptionally simple construction. In particular, the design that we find admits planar coils, and is the first quasi-isodynamic stellarator design to have this property. Our work is made possible by recent theoretical progress in the near-axis theory of quasi-isodynamic stellarators, combined with fundamental progress in the numerical solution of three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic equilibria that cannot be well represented using traditional cylindrical coordinates.

Abstract:Stellarator magnetic configurations need to be optimized in order to meet all the required properties of a fusion reactor. In this work, it is shown that a flat-mirror quasi-isodynamic configuration (i.e. a quasi-isodynamic configuration with sufficiently small radial variation of the mirror term) can achieve small radial transport of energy and good confinement of bulk and fast ions even if it is not very close to perfect omnigeneity, and for a wide range of plasma scenarios, including low $\beta$ and small radial electric field. This opens the door to constructing better stellarator reactors. On the one hand, they would be easier to design, as they would be robust against error fields. On the other hand, they would be easier to operate since, both during startup and steady-state operation, they would require less auxiliary power, and the damage to plasma-facing components caused by fast ion losses would be reduced to acceptable levels.

Abstract:Tokamaks and stellarators are the leading two magnetic confinement devices for producing fusion energy, begging the question of whether the strengths of the two could be merged into a single concept. To meet this challenge, we propose a first-of-its kind optimized stellarator-tokamak hybrid. Compared to a typical tokamak coil set, only a single simple type of stellarator coil has to be added which leads to a compact, volume- and transport-preserving magnetic field, with an added rotational transform that reaches levels thought to enhance stability.

Abstract:Abstract The ongoing development of electromagnets based on high temperature superconductors has led to the conceptual exploration of high-magnetic-field fusion reactors of the tokamak type, operating at on-axis fields above 10 T. In this work we explore the consequences of the potential future availability of high-field three-dimensional electromagnets on the physics design point of a stellarator reactor. We find that, when an increase in the magnetic field strength B is used to maximally reduce the device linear size R ∼ B −4/3 (with otherwise fixed magnetic geometry), the physics design point is largely independent of the chosen field strength/device size. A similar degree of optimization is to be imposed on the magnetohydrodynamic, transport and fast ion confinement properties of the magnetic configuration of that family of reactor design points. Additionally, we show that the family shares an invariant operation map of fusion power output as a function of the auxiliary power and relative density variation. The effects of magnetic field over-engineering and the R ( B ) scaling of design points with constant neutron wall loading are also inspected. In this study we use geometric parameters characteristic of the helical axis advanced stellarator reactor, but most results apply to other stellarator configurations.

Including the vacuum energy in stellarator coil design

Abstract:Being three-dimensional, stellarators have the advantage that plasma currents are not essential for creating rotational-transform; however, the external current-carrying coils in stellarators can have strong geometrical shaping, which can complicate the construction. Reducing the inter-coil electromagnetic forces acting on strongly shaped 3D coils and the stress on the support structure, while preserving the favorable properties of the magnetic field is a design challenge. In this work, we recognize that the inter-coil ${\boldsymbol{j}} \times {\boldsymbol{B}}$ forces are the gradient of the vacuum magnetic energy, $\displaystyle E := \frac{1}{2\mu_0}\int_{\mathbb{R}^3} \!\!\! B^2 \, dV$. We introduce an objective functional, ${\mathcal{F}}:= \Phi_2 + \omega E$, built on the usual quadratic flux on a prescribed target surface, $\displaystyle \Phi_2 := \frac{1}{2}\int_{\mathcal{S}} ( {\boldsymbol{B}} \cdot {\boldsymbol{n}} )^2 \, dS$, and the vacuum energy, where $\omega$ is a weight penalty. The Euler-Lagrange equation for stationary states is derived, and numerical illustrations are computed using the SIMSOPT code \cite{simsopt}.

Abstract:We are interested in the design of stellarators, devices for the production of controlled nuclear fusion reactions alternative to tokamaks. The confinement of the plasma is entirely achieved by a helical magnetic field created by the complex arrangement of coils fed by high currents around a toroidal domain. Such coils describe a surface called “coil winding surface” (CWS). In this paper, we model the design of the CWS as a shape optimization problem, so that the cost functional reflects both optimal plasma confinement properties, through a least square discrepancy, and also manufacturability, thanks to geometrical terms involving the lateral surface or the curvature of the CWS.We completely analyze the resulting problem: on the one hand, we establish the existence of an optimal shape, prove the shape differentiability of the criterion, and provide the expression of the differential in a workable form. On the other hand, we propose a numerical method and perform simulations of optimal stellarator shapes. We discuss the efficiency of our approach with respect to the literature in this area.

Abstract:Design and modeling of a stellarator fusion reactor is a multidisciplinary effort that requires a tight integration between simulation of highly nonlinear multi-physics and representation of non-planar complex geometries. The critical current calculation and the design of the mechanical structures are among the most crucial aspects as they set size, cost, and time to build the stellarator. Because of the asymmetric and non-planar nature of its components the modeling of such figures of merit needs to be carried out at large scale, without the possibility of taking advantage of any particular symmetry. In this work we develop a three-dimensional model for the analysis of the magnetic field and forces, necessary for such considerations, for complex coil geometries, such as stellarators, where a two-dimensional approach can not provide accurate analyses and verification of assumptions. Moreover, this method can quickly generate a large amount of critical modeling data (e.g. Lorentz load, displacement and stresses) that could be integrated into a workflow for coil design optimization based on machine learning or other recent optimization tools.

Exploring novel compact quasi-axisymmetric stellarators

Abstract:The new class of compact quasi-axisymmetric stellarators with a wide range of field periods offers the unique potential to combine the advantages of the two leading magnetic confinement fusion devices, tokamaks and stellarators. Here we present the first numerical optimization of this class which has so far only been obtained analytically. Our approach finds significantly improved quasi-axisymmetric equilibria at aspect ratio $< 2.5$, resulting in no losses of alpha particles at reactor volume while also satisfying improved magnetohydrodynamic stability and a self-consistent plasma current.

Optimised stellarators with a positive radial electric field

Abstract:We draw attention to an interesting possibility in the design and operation of stellarator fusion reactors, which has hitherto been considered unrealistic under burning-plasma conditions. Thanks to recent advances in stellarator optimisation theory, it appears possible to create a positive (outward-pointing) radial electric field in the plasma core by carefully tailoring the geometry of the magnetic field. This electric field is likely to expel highly charged impurities from the centre of the plasma through neoclassical transport and thus eliminate, or at least mitigate, a long-standing problem in stellarator physics. Further out, the electric field is expected to suddenly change sign from positive to negative, thus creating a region of strongly sheared flow, which could locally suppress turbulent transport and enhance overall energy confinement.

Simplified and Flexible Coils for Stellarators using Single-Stage Optimization

Abstract:Single-stage optimization, also known as combined plasma-coil algorithms or direct coil optimization, has recently emerged as a possible method to expedite the design of stellarator devices by including, in a single step, confinement, stability, and engineering constraints. In this work, we show how such frameworks allow us to find new designs in a streamlined manner, yielding a broad range of new configurations. Examples are shown for stellarators with a small number of coils and quasisymmetric stellarators with only one to three coils per half field period, with external trim coils, helical coils, and a single set of coils generating both a quasi-axisymmetric and a quasi-helical equilibrium.

Abstract:We introduce a novel approach for the simultaneous optimization of plasma and coil engineering objectives in a fixed-boundary equilibrium that is computationally efficient and applicable to a broad range of vacuum and finite plasma pressure scenarios. Our approach treats plasma boundary and coil shapes as independently optimized variables, penalizing the mismatch between the two using a quadratic flux term in the objective function. Four use cases are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach, including simple and complex stellarator geometries. As it is shown here, this method outperforms previous 2-stage approaches, achieving smaller plasma objective function values when coils are taken into account.

Abstract:FOR A MACHINE that's designed to replicate a star, the world's newest stellarator is a surprisingly humble-looking apparatus. The kitchen-table-size contraption sits atop stacks of bricks in a cinder-block room at the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) in Princeton, N.J., its parts hand-labeled in marker. The PPPL team invented this nuclear-fusion reactor, completed last year, using mainly off-the-shelf components. Its core is a glass vacuum chamber surrounded by a 3D-printed nylon shell that anchors 9,920 meticulously placed permanent rare-earth magnets. Sixteen copper-coil electromagnets resembling giant slices of pineapple wrap around the shell crosswise.

Abstract:An optimized compact stellarator with four simple coils is obtained from direct optimization via a coil shape. The new stellarator consists of two interlocking coils and two vertical field coils similar to those of the Columbia Non-neutral Torus (CNT) (Pedersen et al., Phys. Rev. Lett., vol. 88, 2002, pp. 205002). The optimized configuration has a global magnetic well and a low helical ripple level comparable to that of Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) (Wolf et al., Nucl. Fusion, vol. 57, 2017, pp. 102020). The two interlocking coils have a smooth three-dimensional shape much simpler than those of advanced stellarators such as W7-X. This result opens up possibilities of future stellarator reactors with simplified coils.

Abstract:A good understanding of the confinement of energetic ions in non-axisymmetric magnetic fields is key for the design of reactors based on the stellarator concept. In this work, we develop a model that, based on the radially-local bounce-averaged drift-kinetic equation, classifies orbits and succeeds in predicting configuration-dependent aspects of the prompt losses of energetic ions in stellarators. Such a model could in turn be employed in the optimization stage of the design of new devices.

A family of quasi-axisymmetric stellarators with varied rotational transform

Abstract:We apply a continuation method to recently optimized stellarator equilibria with excellent quasi-axisymmetry (QA) to generate new equilibria with a wide range of rotational transform profiles. Using these equilibria, we investigate how the rotational transform affects fast-particle confinement, the maximum coil-plasma distance, the maximum growth rate in linear gyrokinetic ion-temperature gradient (ITG) simulations, and the ion heat flux in corresponding nonlinear simulations. We find values of two-term quasisymmetry error comparable to or lower than the similar Landreman-Paul (Phys. Rev. Lett. 128, 035001) configuration for values of the mean rotational transform $\bar{\iota}$ between $0.12$ and $0.75$. The fast-particle confinement improves with $\bar{\iota}$ until $\bar{\iota} = 0.73$, at which point the degradation in quasisymmetry outweighs the benefits of further increasing $\bar{\iota}$. The required coil-plasma distance only varies by about $\pm 10\%$ for the configurations under consideration, and is between $2.8\,\mathrm{m}$ to $3.3\,\mathrm{m}$ when the configuration is scaled up to reactor size. The maximum growth rate from linear gyrokinetic simulations increases with $\bar{\iota}$, but also shifts towards higher $k_y$ values. The maximum linear growth rate is sensitive to the choice of flux tube at rational $\iota$, but this can be compensated for by taking the maximum over several flux tubes. The corresponding ion heat fluxes from nonlinear simulations display a non-monotonic relation to $\iota$. Sufficiently large positive shear is destabilizing. This is reflected both in linear growth rates and nonlinear heat fluxes.

Abstract:A method is given to rapidly compute quasisymmetric stellarator magnetic fields for plasma confinement, without the need to call a three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic equilibrium code inside an optimization iteration. The method is based on direct solution of the equations of magnetohydrodynamic equilibrium and quasisymmetry using Garren & Boozer's expansion about the magnetic axis ( Phys Fluids B, vol. 3, 1991, p. 2805), and it is several orders of magnitude faster than the conventional optimization approach. The work here extends the method of Landreman et al. ( J. Plasma Phys. , vol. 85, 2019, 905850103), which was limited to flux surfaces with elliptical cross-section, to higher order in the aspect-ratio expansion. As a result, configurations can be generated with strong shaping that achieve quasisymmetry to high accuracy. Using this construction, we give the first numerical demonstrations of Garren and Boozer's ideal scaling of quasisymmetry breaking with the cube of the inverse aspect ratio. We also demonstrate a strongly non-axisymmetric configuration (vacuum rotational transform ι ) in which symmetry-breaking mode amplitudes throughout a finite volume are , the smallest ever reported. To generate boundary shapes of finite-minor-radius configurations, a careful analysis is given of the effect of substituting a finite minor radius into the near-axis expansion. The approach here can provide analytic insight into the space of possible quasisymmetric stellarator configurations, and it can be used to generate good initial conditions for conventional stellarator optimization.
