Abstract:We draw attention to an interesting possibility in the design and operation of stellarator fusion reactors, which has hitherto been considered unrealistic under burning-plasma conditions. Thanks to recent advances in stellarator optimisation theory, it appears possible to create a positive (outward-pointing) radial electric field in the plasma core by carefully tailoring the geometry of the magnetic field. This electric field is likely to expel highly charged impurities from the centre of the plasma through neoclassical transport and thus eliminate, or at least mitigate, a long-standing problem in stellarator physics. Further out, the electric field is expected to suddenly change sign from positive to negative, thus creating a region of strongly sheared flow, which could locally suppress turbulent transport and enhance overall energy confinement.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is how to create a positive (outward - pointing) radial electric field by optimizing the geometry generated by the magnetic field in the design and operation of stellarator fusion reactors. This electric field can expel highly - charged impurities from the plasma center through the neoclassical transport mechanism, thereby eliminating or at least alleviating the long - standing problem in stellarator physics. In addition, the electric field is expected to suddenly change sign from positive to negative further out, thus forming a region of strong shear flow, which may locally suppress turbulent transport and enhance the overall energy confinement. ### Background and Problem Description 1. **Impurity Accumulation Problem**: - The accumulation of highly - charged impurities in the core of magnetically - confined plasma has been a recognized problem since the early days of the fusion program. In a hydrogen plasma with a single - species impurity ion, classical diffusion due to precessional motion and Coulomb collisions can lead to an extremely sharp impurity density distribution. - Neoclassical impurity transport is particularly large, especially in stellarator, and is affected by the radial electric field, which usually points inward, driving impurity ions into the plasma core. 2. **Limitations of Existing Solutions**: - Classical transport is usually not sufficient to be a practical problem, but neoclassical impurity transport is equally serious. At low collision rates, the neoclassical particle flux is given by the transport law, where the radial electric field usually points inward, driving impurities into the plasma core. - Eddy current transport can "flush" away impurities, but it also reduces energy confinement. 3. **Possibility of a Positive Radial Electric Field**: - If a positive radial electric field can be generated in the plasma core, neoclassical transport will be reversed and impurities will no longer accumulate in the core. This condition can be achieved at low densities by heating electrons to a temperature significantly higher than that of ions. - However, in a typical fusion reactor, the electron and ion temperatures are similar because the density needs to be large enough so that the energy confinement time exceeds the ion - electron temperature equilibrium time. ### Core Contributions of the Paper - **Discoveries and Analyses**: - Recent research has unexpectedly found that a positive radial electric field spontaneously appears in the reactor transport calculations of quasi - isodynamic stellarator. The paper analyzes this phenomenon in detail and explores the required geometric conditions of the magnetic field. - By optimizing the stellarator magnetic field, a positive radial electric field can be achieved while maintaining other favorable characteristics. - **Theoretical and Experimental Verifications**: - Through numerical optimization, the objective function \( f_{\text{QI}} \) within different magnetic surfaces can be minimized, thereby generating a quasi - isodynamic magnetic field. - Experimental results show that the appearance of a positive radial electric field can significantly improve plasma transport, especially possibly forming a turbulent transport barrier in the electron - root region, further improving the energy confinement of the core plasma. ### Conclusions This paper successfully solves the problem of the accumulation of highly - charged impurities in the plasma core by optimizing the stellarator magnetic field design and proposes a method to achieve a positive radial electric field under typical fusion reactor conditions. This not only helps to improve the purity of the plasma but also may further enhance the energy confinement efficiency by forming a turbulent transport barrier.
