Abstract:Because of its merits of rapid analytical speed,high sensitivity and high accuracy,gas chromatography-mass spectrometry is used more and more widely in element speciation analysis.In this study,the interface design methods of GC-MS were briefly reviewed.Moreover,the existing forms and speciation analysis significance of arsenic,selenium,mercury and lead were introduced,and the application of GC-MS in speciation analysis of arsenic,selenium,mercury and lead were reviewed.Finally,the development tendency and limitation of this combined technology was prospected.

Abstract:Metabonomics involves the unbiased quantitative and qualitative analysis of the complete set of metabolites present in cells, body fluids and tissues (the metabolome) based on modern analytic technique with high throughput, high sensitivity, and high resolution. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) is used to gain qualitative results of detected metabolites for biological samples as it provides superior distinguishability, detection sensitivity and integrated standard mass spectrometry library. In this article, the historic developments of GC-MS and its application in metabonomics in the past several years were reviewed. Firstly, the classification and the derivative methods of GC-MS were introduced. Subsequently, sample pretreatment process, qualitative and quantitative analysis and data analysis during detecting metabolites by GC-MS were introduced, then its application in microorganism, plant and disease diagnosis was systematically summarized. Finally, the problems in metabonomics study based on GC-MS and the research prospect in the future were discussed.

Abstract:Several headspace gas chromatographic(HSGC) techniques that can determine not only volatile species content but also their vapor-liquor equilibrium partitioning coefficients in the pulp and paper industrial samples with very complicated matrices were reviewed.The capability of HSGC for indirectly determination of non-volatile species through a phase conversion reaction method was also reported.Although the examples presented in this paper were more focused in the pulp and paper related application,HSGC technique has a great potential to be used for solving many very challenged problems in the other industries and research fields due to its accurate,rapid,simple,and automatic characteristics.

Abstract:The gas chromatograph (GC)-infrared spectroscopy (IR) technique combines the particular separating capacity of GC and the faultlessly with distinguishing capacity of molecular structure of IR, its detective sensitivity is very high and itis used to separate and identify many kinds of complicated compounds from element speciation analysis, natural products, and gasoline. This paper introduces the principle of GC-IR. Three types of interface techniques, light pipe technique, matrix isolation technique and direct deposition technique are compared. Connection type with other detections and factors influencing sensitivity in interface are also introduced. The improvement and achievement in coupling GC system, interface, data processing techniques and its application is reviewed in the present paper.

Application of GC-MS includes drug detection, explosive academy of investigation researches, and identification of unknown sample using iatochemistry. It can be used to find trace elements in material that had previously been assumed to have decomposed beyond recognition. Many field research involving organic chemical detection and determination use GC-MS as an integral and complementary tool.

Abstract:High performance liquid chromatography( HPLC) was a novel separation techniques developed on the basis of classical liquid chromatography and gas chromatography. After 1980s and 1990s,HPLC technology developed quickly. Especially,in the early 21st century,the liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry technology was greatly developed and it broadened the application prospects of HPLC. Nearly 80% of all known organic compounds belong to the low volatility organic compounds,susceptible to thermal decomposition or macromolecular compounds,suitable for HPLC analysis. The application of liquid chromatography and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry technology in environmental analysis was presented using the characteristics of the HPLC analysis method as the starting point.

Abstract:<h3 class="a-plus-plus">Abstract</h3> <span class="a-plus-plus abstract-section id-a-sec1"> <h3 class="a-plus-plus">Background</h3> <p class="a-plus-plus">Metabolomics aims to identify the changes in endogenous metabolites of biological systems in response to intrinsic and extrinsic factors. This is accomplished through untargeted, semi-targeted and targeted based approaches. Untargeted and semi-targeted methods are typically applied in hypothesis-generating investigations (aimed at measuring as many metabolites as possible), while targeted approaches analyze a relatively smaller subset of biochemically important and relevant metabolites. Regardless of approach, it is well recognized amongst the metabolomics community that gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC–MS) is one of the most efficient, reproducible and well used analytical platforms for metabolomics research. This is due to the robust, reproducible and selective nature of the technique, as well as the large number of well-established libraries of both commercial and ‘in house’ metabolite databases available.</p> </span> <span class="a-plus-plus abstract-section id-a-sec2"> <h3 class="a-plus-plus">Aim of review</h3> <p class="a-plus-plus">This review provides an overview of developments in GC–MS based metabolomics applications, with a focus on sample preparation and preservation techniques. A number of chemical derivatization (<em class="a-plus-plus">in-time, in-liner, offline</em> and microwave assisted) techniques are also discussed. Electron impact ionization and a summary of alternate mass analyzers are highlighted, along with a number of recently reported new GC columns suited for metabolomics. Lastly, multidimensional GC–MS and its application in environmental and biomedical research is presented, along with the importance of bioinformatics.</p> </span> <span class="a-plus-plus abstract-section id-a-sec3"> <h3 class="a-plus-plus">Key scientific concepts of review</h3> <p class="a-plus-plus">The purpose of this review is to both highlight and provide an update on GC–MS analytical techniques that are common in metabolomics studies. Abstract:Rapid, non-destructive, accurate, and high-throughput screening of volatile ingredients plays an important role in the field of analysis. Gas chromatography–ion mobility spectrometry (GC–IMS) has the advantages of high separation efficiency, high sensitivity, no requirement for sample pretreatment and fast response, which are important for the nondestructive and rapid detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). This paper reviews the application of GC–IMS in the past 10 years. First, the working principle, experimental process, data processing methods, and advantages of GC–IMS are outlined and followed by the research progress in the use of GC–IMS in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) detection, clinical research, food industry, environmental protection, polymer, and petrochemical analysis. Finally, the development trends in GC–IMS are summarized and presented, as well as the possible expansion areas of GC–IMS in the future.
