Abstract:This paper provides the most general preference axiomatization of average utility (AU) maximization over infinite sequences presently available, reaching almost complete generality. The only restriction is that all periodic sequences should be contained in the domain. Infinite sequences may designate intertemporal outcomes streams where AU models patience, welfare allocations where AU models fairness, or decisions under ambiguity where AU models complete ignorance. As a methodological contribution, this paper shows that infinite-dimensional representations can be simpler, rather than more complex, than finite-dimensional ones. Infinite dimensions provide a richness that may be convenient rather than cumbersome. In particular, (empirically problematic) continuity assumptions are not needed in our axiomatization. Continuity is optional.

Abstract:<p>We propose generalized versions of strong equity and Pigou-Dalton transfer principle. We study the existence and the real-valued representation of social welfare relations satisfying these two generalized equity principles. Our results characterize the restrictions on one period utility domains for the equitable social welfare relations (i) to exist; and (ii) to admit real-valued representations.</p>

Abstract:Expected Utility: Algebraic Expected Utility In this paper, we provide two axiomatizations of algebraic expected utility, which is a particular generalized expected utility, in a von Neumann-Morgenstern setting, i.e. uncertainty representation is supposed to be given and here to be described by a plausibility measure valued on a semiring, which could be partially ordered. We show that axioms identical to those for expected utility entail that preferences are represented by an algebraic expected utility. This algebraic approach allows many previous propositions (expected utility, binary possibilistic utility,...) to be unified in a same general framework and proves that the obtained utility enjoys the same nice features as expected utility: linearity, dynamic consistency, autoduality of the underlying uncertainty measure, autoduality of the decision criterion and possibility of modeling decision maker's attitude toward uncertainty.

Abstract:The von Neumann-Morgenstern ‘expected utility hypothesis’ as presented in Chapter I of The Theory of Games and Economic Behavior (1944) was the first attempt at a rigorous axiomatization of a fundamental concept of economics, namely, a general theory of utility. There is no a priori notion of ‘rationality’ in the theory; rather, that is a concept to be derived and given meaning to from the theory. The theory is ‘absolutely convincing’ in the sense that if behavior deviates from that predicated by the theory, after explanation of the theory, behavior would be adjusted. The von Neumann-Morgenstern ‘expected utility theory’ was the first approximation to an undoubtedly much richer and far more complicated reality. Critics of the theory, such as Allais and others, have centered their criticism of the theory not on the internal consistency of the axioms of which the theory is composed but rather on the validity of the axioms themselves. In that sense, the attacks on the theory are misplaced. It is common knowledge throughout scientific circles that axiomatic systems are often modified as axioms are more precisely specified, qualified, or, at times, replaced, as our understanding of physical laws is expanded. Not unexpectedly, the evolution of the von Neumann-Morgenstern ‘expected utility theory’ over the past thirty years is in complete concordance with scientific progress.

Abstract:We combine Kronecker products, and quantitative information flow, to give a novel formal analysis for the fine-grained verification of utility in complex privacy pipelines. The combination explains a surprising anomaly in the behaviour of utility of privacy-preserving pipelines -- that sometimes a reduction in privacy results also in a decrease in utility. We use the standard measure of utility for Bayesian analysis, introduced by Ghosh at al., to produce tractable and rigorous proofs of the fine-grained statistical behaviour leading to the anomaly. More generally, we offer the prospect of formal-analysis tools for utility that complement extant formal analyses of privacy. We demonstrate our results on a number of common privacy-preserving designs.

Liveness Properties in Geometric Logic for Domain-Theoretic Streams

Abstract:We devise a version of Linear Temporal Logic (LTL) on a denotational domain of streams. We investigate this logic in terms of domain theory, (point-free) topology and geometric logic. This yields the first steps toward an extension of the "Domain Theory in Logical Form" paradigm to temporal liveness properties. We show that the negation-free formulae of LTL induce sober subspaces of streams, but that this is in general not the case in presence of negation. We propose a direct, inductive, translation of negation-free LTL to geometric logic. This translation reflects the approximations used to compute the usual fixpoint representations of LTL modalities. As a motivating example, we handle a natural input-output specification for the usual filter function on streams.

Abstract:We propose a rich foundational theory of typed data streams and stream transformers, motivated by two high-level goals: (1) The type of a stream should be able to express complex sequential patterns of events over time. And (2) it should describe the internal parallel structure of the stream to support deterministic stream processing on parallel and distributed systems. To these ends, we introduce stream types, with operators capturing sequential composition, parallel composition, and iteration, plus a core calculus lambda-ST of transformers over typed streams which naturally supports a number of common streaming idioms, including punctuation, windowing, and parallel partitioning, as first-class constructions. lambda-ST exploits a Curry-Howard-like correspondence with an ordered variant of the logic of Bunched Implication to program with streams compositionally and uses Brzozowski-style derivatives to enable an incremental, prefix-based operational semantics. To illustrate the programming style supported by the rich types of lambda-ST, we present a number of examples written in delta, a prototype high-level language design based on lambda-ST.

Abstract:Let $\succsim$ be a binary relation on the set of simple lotteries over a countable outcome set $Z$. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions on $\succsim$ to guarantee the existence of a set $U$ of von Neumann--Morgenstern utility functions $u: Z\to \mathbf{R}$ such that $$ p\succsim q \,\,\,\Longleftrightarrow\,\,\, \mathbf{E}_p[u] \ge \mathbf{E}_q[u] \,\text{ for all }u \in U $$ for all simple lotteries $p,q$. In such case, the set $U$ is essentially unique. Then, we show that the analogue characterization does not hold if $Z$ is uncountable. This provides an answer to an open question posed by Dubra, Maccheroni, and Ok in [J. Econom. Theory~\textbf{115} (2004), no.~1, 118--133]. Lastly, we show that different continuity requirements on $\succsim$ allow for certain restrictions on the possible choices of the set $U$ of utility functions (e.g., all utility functions are bounded), providing a wide family of expected multi-utility representations.

Abstract:The aim of this article is to define a notion of cardinal utility function called measurable utility and to define it on a connected and separable subset of a weakly ordered topological space. The definition is equivalent to the ones given by Frisch in 1926 and by Shapley in 1975 and postulates axioms on a set of alternatives that allow both to ordinally rank alternatives and to compare their utility differences. After a brief review of the philosophy of utilitarianism and the history of utility theory, the paper introduces the mathematical framework to represent intensity comparisons of utility and proves a list of topological lemmas that will be used in the main result. Finally, the article states and proves a representation theorem for a measurable utility function defined on a connected and separable subset of a weakly ordered topological space equipped with another weak order on its cartesian product. Under some assumptions on the order relations, the main theorem proves existence and uniqueness, up to positive affine transformations, of an order isomorphism with the real line.

Abstract:We treat utility maximization from terminal wealth for an agent with utility function $U:\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R}$ who dynamically invests in a continuous-time financial market and receives a possibly unbounded random endowment. We prove the existence of an optimal investment without introducing the associated dual problem. We rely on a recent result of Orlicz space theory, due to Delbaen and Owari which leads to a simple and transparent proof. Our results apply to non-smooth utilities and even strict concavity can be relaxed. We can handle certain random endowments with non-hedgeable risks, complementing earlier papers. Constraints on the terminal wealth can also be incorporated. As examples, we treat frictionless markets with finitely many assets and large financial markets.

Abstract:The main goal of this paper is presentation a modern axiomatic approach to financial arithmetic. At the first, the axiomatic financial arithmetic theory was proposed by Peccati who has introduced the axiomatic definition of the future value. This theory has been extensively developed in past years. Proposed approach to financial arithmetic is based on the financial flow utility concept. This utility function is defined as linear extension of multicriteria comparison determined by the time preference and the capital preference. Then the present value is equal to financial flow utility. Therefore, the law of diminishing marginal wealth utility has been considered as additional feature of the present value. The future value is defined as the inverse of utility function. This definition is a generalization of the Peccati one. The net present value is given as the unique additive extension of financial flow utility. Moreover, the synergy effect and the diversification effect will be discussed. At the end, the axiomatic present value definition will be specified in three ways.
Expected Utility from a Constructive Viewpoint

Abstract:This paper introduces a space of variable lotteries and proves a constructive version of the expected utility theorem. The word ``constructive'' is used here in two senses. First, as in constructive mathematics, the logic underlying proofs is intuitionistic. In a second sense of the word, ``constructive'' is taken to mean ``built up from smaller components.'' Lotteries as well as preferences vary continuously over some topological space. The topology encodes observability or verifiability restrictions -- the open sets of the topology serve as the possible truth values of assertions about preference and reflect constraints on the ability to measure, deduce, or observe. Replacing an open set by a covering of smaller open sets serves as a notion of refinement of information. Within this framework, inability to compare arises as a phenomenon distinct from indifference and this gives rise to the constructive failure of the classical expected utility theorem. A constructive version of the theorem is then proved, and accomplishes several things. First, the representation theorem uses continuous real-valued functions as indicators of preference for variable lotteries and these functions reflect the inability to compare phenomenon. Second, conditions are provided whereby local representations of preference over open sets can be collated to provide a global representation. Third, the proofs are constructive and do not use the law of the excluded middle, which may not hold for variable lotteries. Fourth, a version of the classical theorem is obtained by imposing a condition on the collection of open sets of the topology which has the effect of making the logic classical.
