Abstract:We present an algorithm which uses Fujiwara's inequality to bound algebraic functions over ellipses of a certain type, allowing us to concretely implement a rigorous Gauss-Legendre integration method for algebraic functions over a line segment. We consider path splitting strategies to improve convergence of the method and show that these yield significant practical and asymptotic benefits. We implemented these methods to compute period matrices of algebraic Riemann surfaces and these are available in SageMath.

Abstract:A brief overview of some computer algebra methods for computations with nested integrals is given. The focus is on nested integrals over integrands involving square roots. Rewrite rules for conversion to and from associated nested sums are discussed. We also include a short discussion comparing the holonomic systems approach and the differential field approach. For simplification to rational integrands, we give a comprehensive list of univariate rationalizing transformations, including transformations tuned to map the interval $[0,1]$ bijectively to itself.

Abstract:Starting from an A-stable rational approximation to $\rm{e}^z$ of order $p$, $$r(z)= 1+ z+ \cdots + z^p/ p! + O(z^{p+1}),$$ families of stable methods are proposed to time discretize abstract IVP's of the type $u'(t) = A u(t) + f(t)$. These numerical procedures turn out to be of order $p$, thus overcoming the order reduction phenomenon, and only one evaluation of $f$ per step is required.

Abstract:We investigate generalized versions of the Iteratively Regularized Landweber Method, initially introduced in [Appl. Math. Optim., 38(1):45-68, 1998], to address linear and nonlinear ill-posed problems. Our approach is inspired by the data-driven perspective emphasized in the introduction by Aspri et al. [Numer. Funct. Anal. Optim., 41(10):1190-1227, 2020]. We provide a rigorous analysis establishing convergence and stability results and present numerical outcomes for linear operators, with the Radon transform serving as a prototype.

Abstract:Diffusive representations of fractional differential and integral operators can provide a convenient means to construct efficient numerical algorithms for their approximate evaluation. In the current literature, many different variants of such representations have been proposed. Concentrating on Riemann-Liouville integrals whose order is in (0,1), we here present a general approach that comprises most of these variants as special cases and that allows a detailed investigation of the analytic properties of each variant. The availability of this information allows to choose concrete numerical methods for handling the representations that exploit the specific properties, thus allowing to construct very efficient overall methods.

Abstract:We present a methodology for numerically integrating ordinary differential equations containing rapidly oscillatory terms. This challenge is distinct from that for differential equations which have rapidly oscillatory solutions: here the differential equation itself has the oscillatory terms. Our method generalises Filon quadrature for integrals, and is analogous to integral techniques designed to solve stochastic differential equations and, as such, is applicable to a wide variety of ordinary differential equations with rapidly oscillating factors. The proposed method flexibly achieves varying levels of accuracy depending upon the truncation of the expansion of certain integrals. Users will choose the level of truncation to suit the parameter regime of interest in their numerical integration.

Abstract:We investigate numerical methods for computation of polynomial and rational approximations of functions in complex domains based on Faber polynomials and the Lanczos -method. Our interest is motivated by applications in fractional partial differential equations. We give an overview of previous results related to the basis of Faber polynomials associated with a complex domain, Faber expansion, and the Lanczos -method. We also collect numerical algorithms for the computational realization of these concepts. Our main new contribution is a -method for rational approximation in complex domains which uses Faber polynomials in the perturbation term. We realize it via a novel hybrid symbolic-numeric algorithm which can be applied to arbitrary functions satisfying a suitable differential equation. We present some numerical examples, where we use sectors lying in the complex plane as our domains of interest. We compare results for the various polynomial and rational approximation techniques outlined above; in particular, we observe exponential convergence with respect to the rational degree for our proposed method.

Abstract:We present FUEL (Fractional Universal Evaluation Library), a C++ library for performing rational function arithmetic with a flexible choice of third-party computer algebra systems as simplifiers. FUEL is an outgrowth of a C++ interface to Fermat which was originally part of the FIRE code for integration-by-parts (IBP) reduction for Feynman integrals, now promoted to be a standalone library and with access to simplifiers other than Fermat. We compare the performance of various simplifiers for standalone benchmark problems as well as IBP reduction runs with FIRE. A speedup of more than 10 times is achieved for an example IBP problem related to off-shell three-particle form factors in $\mathcal N=4$ super-Yang-Mills theory.

Abstract:Abstract The Mittag–Leffler function (MLF) plays an important role in many applications of fractional calculus, establishing a connection between exponential and power law behaviors that characterize integer and fractional order phenomena, respectively. Nevertheless, the numerical computation of the MLF poses problems both of accuracy and convergence. In this paper, we study the calculation of the 2-parameter MLF by using polynomial computation and integral formulas. For the particular cases having Laplace transform (LT) the method relies on the inversion of the LT using the fast Fourier transform. Experiments with two other available methods compare also the computational time and accuracy. The 3-parameter MLF and its calculation are also considered.

Abstract:Motivated essentially by the success of the applications of discrete Mittag-Leffler functions in solving fractional order difference equations, the authors present, in a unified manner, a detailed numerical implementation method of the Mittag-Leffler function. With the proposed method, the overflow problem can be well solved. To further improve the practicability, the state transition matrix described by discrete Mittag-Leffler function is investigated. After presenting interesting and useful properties, some illustrative examples are provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed theoretical results.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a new choice of poles to define reliable rational Krylov methods. These methods are used for approximating function of positive definite matrices. In particular, the fractional power and the fractional resolvent are considered because of their importance in the numerical solution of fractional partial differential equations. The results of the numerical experiments we have carried out on some fractional models confirm that the proposed approach is promising.

Abstract:Partial fraction expansion (pfe) is a classic technique used in many fields of pure or applied mathematics. The paper focuses on the pfe of general rational functions in both factorized and expanded form. Novel, simple, and recursive formulas for the computation of residues and residual polynomial coefficients are derived. The proposed pfe methods require only simple pure-algebraic operations in the whole computation process. They do not involve derivatives when tackling proper functions and require no polynomial division when dealing with improper functions. The methods are efficient and very easy to apply for both computer and manual calculation. Various numerical experiments confirm that the proposed methods can achieve quite desirable accuracy even for pfe of rational functions with multiple high-order poles or some tricky ill-conditioned poles.

Abstract:A new set of generalized Jacobi rational functions of the first and second kinds, GJRFs-1 and GJRFs-2, which are mutually orthogonal in L2(0,∞)$$L^{2}(0,\infty)$$, are introduced and they are analytical eigensolutions to a new family of singular fractional Sturm-Liouville problems (SFSLPs) of the first and second kinds as non-polynomial functions. We establish some properties and optimal approximation results for these GJRFs-1 and GJRFs-2 in non-uniformly weighted Sobolev spaces involving fractional derivatives, which play important roles in the related spectral methods for a class of fractional differential equations. We develop Jacobi rational-Gauss quadrature type formulae and L2$$L^{2}$$-orthogonal projections based on GJRFs-1 and GJRFs-2. As examples of applications, the two quadrature rules are proposed for Fermi-Dirac and Bose-Einstein integrals. Using various orthogonal properties of GJRFs-1 and GJRFs-2, the Petrov-Galerkin methods are proposed for fractional initial value problems and fractional boundary value problems. Numerical results demonstrate its efficient algorithm, and spectral accuracy for treating the above-mentioned classes of problems. The suggested numerical scheme provides an applicable substitutional to other competitive methods in the recent method-related accuracy.

Abstract:We present a method for solving nonlinear eigenvalue problems using rational approximation. The method uses the AAA method by Nakatsukasa, Sète, and Trefethen to approximate the nonlinear eigenvalue problem by a rational eigenvalue problem and is embedded in the state space representation of a rational polynomial by Su and Bai. The advantage of the method, compared to related techniques such as NLEIGS and infinite Arnoldi, is the efficient computation by an automatic procedure. In addition, a set-valued approach is developed that allows building a low degree rational approximation of a nonlinear eigenvalue problem. The method perfectly fits the framework of the Compact rational Krylov methods (CORK and TS-CORK), allowing to efficiently solve large scale nonlinear eigenvalue problems. Numerical examples show that the presented framework is competitive with NLEIGS and usually produces smaller linearizations with the same accuracy but with less effort for the user.

Abstract:We propose a method for the treatment of two--point boundary value problems given by nonlinear ordinary differential equations. The approach leads to sequences of roots of Hankel determinants that converge rapidly towards the unknown parameter of the problem. We treat several problems of physical interest: the field equation determining the vortex profile in a Ginzburg--Landau effective theory, the fixed--point equation for Wilson's exact renormalization group, a suitably modified Wegner--Houghton's fixed point equation in the local potential approximation, a Riccati equation, and the Thomas--Fermi equation. We consider two models where the approach does not apply in order to show the limitations of our Padé--Hankel approach.

Reconstruction of rational functions made simple

Abstract:We present a new method for the reconstruction of rational functions through finite-fields sampling that can significantly reduce the number of samples required. The method works by exploiting all the independent linear relations among target functions. Subsequently, the explicit solutions of the functions can be efficiently obtained by solving the linear system. As a first application, we utilize the method to address various examples within the context of Feynman integrals reduction. These examples demonstrate that our method can substantially improve the computational efficiency, making it useful for future computations in particle physics.

Improving Greedy Algorithms for Rational Approximation

Abstract:When developing robust preconditioners for multiphysics problems, fractional functions of the Laplace operator often arise and need to be inverted. Rational approximation in the uniform norm can be used to convert inverting those fractional operators into inverting a series of shifted Laplace operators. Care must be taken in the approximation so that the shifted Laplace operators remain symmetric positive definite, making them better conditioned. In this work, we study two greedy algorithms for finding rational approximations to such fractional operators. The first algorithm improves the orthogonal greedy algorithm discussed in [Li et al., SISC, 2024] by adding one minimization step in the uniform norm to the procedure. The second approach employs the weak Chebyshev greedy algorithm in the uniform norm. Both methods yield non-increasing error. Numerical results confirm the effectiveness of our proposed algorithms, which are also flexible and applicable to other approximation problems. Moreover, with effective rational approximations to the fractional operator, the resulting algorithms show good performance in preconditioning a Darcy-Stokes coupled problem.

Abstract:This work deals with the numerical solution of systems of oscillatory second-order differential equations which often arise from the semi-discretization in space of partial differential equations. Since these differential equations exhibit (pronounced or highly) oscillatory behavior, standard numerical methods are known to perform poorly. Our approach consists in directly discretizing the problem by means of Gautschi-type integrators based on $\operatorname{sinc}$ matrix functions. The novelty contained here is that of using a suitable rational approximation formula for the $\operatorname{sinc}$ matrix function to apply a rational Krylov-like approximation method with suitable choices of poles. In particular, we discuss the application of the whole strategy to a finite element discretization of the wave equation.
