Abstract:This paper provides an overview of experiments and facilities for accelerator-based dark matter searches as part of the US Community Study on the Future of Particle Physics (Snowmass 2021). Companion white papers to this paper present the physics drivers: thermal dark matter, visible dark portals, and new flavors and rich dark sectors.

After taking a census of present and upcoming DM-related experiments, we review the motivations to go beyond an "accelerator-only" approach, and highlight the benefits of multidisciplinarity in the quest for DM.

Abstract:We propose a novel direct detection concept to search for dark matter with 100~keV to 100~MeV masses. Such dark matter can scatter off molecules in a gas and transfer an $\mathcal{O}(1)$ fraction of its kinetic energy to excite a vibrational and rotational state. The excited ro-vibrational mode relaxes rapidly and produces a spectacular multi-infrared-photon signal, which can be observed with ultrasensitive photodetectors. We discuss in detail a gas target consisting of carbon monoxide molecules, which enable efficient photon emission even at a relatively low temperature and high vapor pressure. The emitted photons have an energy in the range 180~meV to 265~meV. By mixing together carbon monoxide molecules of different isotopes, including those with an odd number of neutrons, we obtain sensitivity to both spin-independent interactions and spin-dependent interactions with the neutron. We also consider hydrogen fluoride, hydrogen bromide, and scandium hydride molecules, which each provide sensitivity to spin-dependent interactions with the proton. The proposed detection concept can be realized with near-term technology and allows for the exploration of orders of magnitude of new dark matter parameter space.

Seeing dark matter via acceleration radiation

Abstract:Despite constituting a noteworthy $\sim 27\%$ share of the total energy budget of our Universe, dark matter (DM) has thus far eluded direct observations. Owing to its pervasive nature, there is a sincere expectation that astrophysical black holes (BHs) encompassed by DM should leave distinctive imprints on the gravitational waves arising from BH mergers. Theoretical models of DM present a diverse landscape of possibilities, with perfect fluid dark matter (PFDM) emerging as a recent and notably intriguing candidate model. In this work, utilizing the established quantum optical approach, we investigate the possibility of catching DM signatures via acceleration radiation emitted by a freely-falling detector (e.g. an atom) within a PFDM-surrounded Schwarzschild BH. The setup involves a Casimir-type apparatus where the detector interacts with the field, and this situation induces excitations in the detector in a manner consistent with Unruh effect. We observe that our DM candidate, while making classical contributions to spacetime geometry, has the potential to leave quantum imprints in the radiation flux. Notably, it is observed that, in comparison to a pure Schwarzschild BH, PFDM can markedly reduce particle emission as long as its density remains below a critical threshold, and vice versa. Given the lessons we have learnt from realizing cosmological phenomena in simulated laboratory conditions, there is a remote possibility that such study may perhaps provide insights (to whatever degree !) into the future table-top experiments in analogue gravity paradigm.

Abstract:We present a novel way of probing non-gravitational dark matter interactions: dark astronomy, which leverages the dark radiation emitted by dissipative dark sectors. If the mediator of the dark matter self interactions is a dark photon with a small mass that kinetically mixes with the visible photon, the dark radiation flux becomes accessible to underground experiments. We argue that the emission may be dominantly longitudinally polarized, thereby enhancing the sensitivity of direct detection experiments such as XENON and SENSEI to this signal. We introduce a new detection mechanism based on resonant dark-photon-to-photon conversion at the surface of conducting materials, which offers unique directional sensitivity to dark radiation. This mechanism facilitates the development of experiments that combine dark matter detection techniques with methods of traditional astronomy, opening the possibility to map dark radiation sources within our galaxy.

Abstract:The constituents of dark matter are still unknown, and the viable possibilities span a vast range of masses. The physics community has established searching for sub-GeV dark matter as a high priority and identified accelerator-based experiments as an essential facet of this search strategy. A key goal of the accelerator-based dark matter program is testing the broad idea of thermally produced sub-GeV dark matter through experiments designed to directly produce dark matter particles. The most sensitive way to search for the production of light dark matter is to use a primary electron beam to produce it in fixed-target collisions. The Light Dark Matter eXperiment (LDMX) is an electron-beam fixed-target missing-momentum experiment that realizes this approach and provides unique sensitivity to light dark matter in the sub-GeV range. This contribution provides an overview of the theoretical motivation, the main experimental challenges, how LDMX addresses these challenges, and projected sensitivities. We further describe the capabilities of LDMX to explore other interesting new and standard physics, such as visibly-decaying axion and vector mediators or rare meson decays, and to provide timely electronuclear scattering measurements that will inform the modeling of neutrino-nucleus scattering for DUNE.

Abstract:Here we present world-leading sensitivity to light ( <170 MeV ) dark matter (DM) using beam-dump experiments. Dark sector particles produced during pion decay at accelerator beam dumps can be detected via scattering in neutrino detectors. The decay of nuclei excited by the inelastic scattering of DM is an unexploited channel which has significantly better sensitivity than similar searches using the elastic scattering channel. We show that this channel is a powerful probe of DM by demonstrating sensitivity to the thermal relic abundance benchmark in a scalar DM dark-photon portal model. This is achieved through the use of existing data, obtained by the KARMEN experiment over two decades ago, which allow us to set world-leading constraints on this model over a wide mass range. Dark matter search with a strongly-coupled hybrid spin system

Abstract:Observational evidence suggests the existence of dark matter (DM), which comprises approximately $84.4\%$ of matter in the universe. Recent advances in tabletop quantum sensor technology have enabled searches for nongravitational interactions of DM. Our experiment named ChangE utilizes Coupled Hot Atom eNsembles to search for liGht dark mattEr and new physics. We identify a strongly-coupled hybrid spin-resonance (HSR) regime that enhances the bandwidth of $^{21}$Ne nuclear spin by three orders of magnitude while maintaining high sensitivity. In combination with a self-compensating mode (SC) for low frequencies, we present a comprehensive broadband search for axion-like dark matter with Compton frequencies in the range of $[0.01, 1000]$ Hz. We set new constraints on the DM interactions with neutrons and protons, accounting for the stochastic effect. For the axion-neutron coupling, our results reach a low value of $|g_{ann}|\le 3\times 10^{-10}$ in the frequency range $[0.02 , 4]$ Hz surpassing astrophysical limits and provide the strongest laboratory constraints in the $[10, 100]$ Hz range. For the axion-proton coupling, we offer the best terrestrial constraints for the frequency below 100 Hz.

Abstract:We demonstrate that current and planned underground neutrino experiments could offer a powerful probe of few-MeV dark matter when combined with a nearby high-intensity low-to-medium energy electron accelerator. This experimental setup, an underground beam-dump experiment, is capable of decisively testing the thermal freeze-out mechanism for several natural dark matter scenarios in this mass range. We present the sensitivity reach in terms of the mass-coupling parameter space of existing and planned detectors, such as Super-K and SNO+, in conjunction with a hypothetical 100-MeV energy accelerator. This setup can also greatly extend the sensitivity of direct searches for new light weakly coupled force carriers independent of their connection to dark matter.

Abstract:Inelastic dark matter and strongly interacting dark matter are poorly constrained by direct detection experiments since they both require the scattering event to deliver energy from the nucleus into the dark matter in order to have observable effects. We propose to test these scenarios by searching for the collisional de-excitation of meta-stable nuclear isomers by the dark matter particles. The longevity of these isomers is related to a strong suppression of $\gamma$- and $\beta$-transitions, typically inhibited by a large difference in the angular momentum for the nuclear transition. The collisional de-excitation by dark matter is possible since heavy dark matter particles can have a momentum exchange with the nucleus comparable to the inverse nuclear size, hence lifting tremendous angular momentum suppression of the nuclear transition. This de-excitation can be observed either by searching for the direct effects of the decaying isomer, or through the re-scattering or decay of excited dark matter states in a nearby conventional dark matter detector setup. Existing nuclear isomer sources such as naturally occurring $^{180m}$Ta, $^{137m}$Ba produced in decaying Cesium in nuclear waste, $^{177m}$Lu from medical waste, and $^{178m}$Hf from the Department of Energy storage can be combined with current dark matter detector technology to search for this class of dark matter.

Abstract:An observation of the anisotropy of dark matter interactions in a direction-sensitive detector would provide decisive evidence for the discovery of galactic dark matter. Directional information would also provide a crucial input to understanding its distribution in the local Universe. Most of the existing directional dark matter detectors utilize particle tracking methods in a low-pressure gas time projection chamber. These low pressure detectors require excessively large volumes in order to be competitive in the search for physics beyond the current limit. In order to avoid these volume limitations, we consider a novel proposal, which exploits a columnar recombination effect in a high-pressure gas time projection chamber. The ratio of scintillation to ionization signals observed in the detector carries the angular information of the particle interactions.

Abstract:The nature of dark matter in the Universe is one of the hardest unsolved problems in modern physics. Indeed, on one hand, the overwhelming indirect evidence from astrophysics seems to leave no doubt about its existence; on the other hand, direct search experiments, especially those conducted with low-background detectors in underground laboratories all over the world, seem to deliver only null results with a few debated exceptions. Furthermore, the lack of predicted candidates on the LHC energy scale has made this dichotomy even more puzzling. We will recall the most important phases of this novel branch of experimental astro-particle physics, analyzing the interconnections among the main projects involved in this challenging quest, and we will draw conclusions slightly different from how the problem is commonly understood.

Abstract:Among various approaches for indirect detection of dark matter, synchrotron emission due to secondary electrons/positrons produced in galactic WIMPs annihilation is raising an increasing interest. In this paper we propose a new method to derive bounds in the mchi - <sigmaA*v> plane by using radio continuum observations of Messier 33, paying particular attention to a low emitting Radio Cavity. The comparison of the expected radio emission due to the galactic dark matter distribution with the observed one provides bounds which are comparable to those obtained from a similar analysis of the Milky Way. Remarkably, the present results are simply based on archival data and thus largely improvable by means of specifically tailored observations. The potentiality of the method compared with more standard searches is discussed by considering the optimistic situation of a vanishing flux (within the experimental sensitivity) measured inside the cavity by a high resolution radio telescope like ALMA. Under the best conditions our technique is able to produce bounds which are comparable to the ones expected after five years of Fermi LAT data taking for an hadronic annihilation channel. Furthermore, it allows to test the hypothesis that space telescopes like Pamela and Fermi LAT are actually observing electrons and positrons due to galactic dark matter annihilation into leptons.

Searching for Dark Matter with the Future LHC Accelerator at CERN Using the CMS Detector

Abstract:The fraction of visible matter may be as small as about 1% of the total mass of the universe1. The missing dark matter could be baryonic matter in the form of black holes, Jupiter-like planets, white dwarf stars, etc. (collectively called MACHO’s for MAssive, Compact Halo Objects). This type of dark matter could account for much of the discrepancy from galactic rotation curves, but would not be able to account for the amount of dark matter needed on larger scales to explain galactic clustering or the simplest inflationary cosmological models, which require the matter density of the universe to be at the critical density. The missing dark matter could also be composed of elementary particles. The latter come in two different forms: hot dark matter, such as massive neutrinos which would be moving at speeds close to the speed of light, and cold dark matter, such as axions or the lightest superpartner of supersymmetric (SUSY) theories, which would typically be moving at non-relativistic velocities. In R-parity conserving SUSY theories, the lightest SUSY particle (LSP) has to be stable. A neutral LSP would interact weakly, like a neutrino, and would be very difficult to observe directly. The new accelerator to be built at CERN, called the LHC, should have sufficient energy to produce SUSY particles in abundance. Two detectors, CMS2 and ATLAS3, should be able to detect the presence of SUSY particles, and will engage in the search for supersymmetry. Thus, if dark matter is primarily made up of LSP’s, experiments at LHC should be able to discover dark matter indirectly, by finding an excess of events with missing transverse energy, due to LSP’s that escape the detector.

Abstract:The existence of Dark Matter (DM) is a well established fact since many decades, thanks to the observation of the effects of its gravitational interaction with the ordinary matter in the Universe. However, our knowledge of the Dark Matter features is still rather scarce. Indeed, one of the biggest quests in fundamental science today is the investigation of Dark Matter nature, from its origin to its composition, and the way its constituents interact with the ordinary matter, apart from gravity. Huge and ambitious efforts have been spent in the last years into its identification, concentrating especially on the search of viable Weakly Interacting Massive Particle candidates. However, no positive results have been achieved so far along this direction. On the other hand, many fascinating new ideas and models for its interpretation have been blooming: among them, an intriguing hypothesis is that the Dark Matter constituents could be neutral under Standard Model interactions, but they could interact through a new, still unknown, force under a "hidden" charge. This new hidden symmetry would be mediated by a massive gauge boson, the dark photon, which is expected to couple to the Standard Model via a kinetic mixing. The search for such a massive mediator has been pursued with large enthusiasm and dedication in the latest years, as its observation could be within the reach of many already existing experimental facilities, both based on accelerators or in smaller scale setups. This report reviews the present status and progress of the experimental searches in this field.

Abstract:A set of new methods are proposed here to directly detect light mass dark matter through its scattering with abundant atmospheric muons or accelerator beams. A first plan is to use the free cosmic-ray muons interacting with dark matter in a volume surrounded by tracking detectors, to trace the possible interaction between dark matter and muons. Secondly, the same device can be interfaced with domestic or international muon beams. Due to the much larger muon intensity and focused beam, it is anticipated that the detector can be made further compact, and the resulting sensitivity on dark matter searches will be improved. Furthermore, it may also be possible to measure precisely directional distributions of cosmic-ray muons, either at mountain or sea level, and the differences may reveal possible information about dark matter distributed near the Earth. Abstract:Traditional direct searches for dark matter, looking for nuclear recoils in deep underground detectors, are challenged by an almost complete loss of sensitivity for light dark matter particles. Consequently, there is a significant effort in the community to devise new methods and experiments to overcome these difficulties, constantly pushing the limits of the lowest dark matter mass that can be probed this way. From a model-building perspective, the scattering of sub-GeV dark matter on nucleons essentially must proceed via new light mediator particles, given that collider searches place extremely stringent bounds on contact-type interactions. Here we present an updated compilation of relevant limits for the case of a scalar mediator, including a new estimate of the near-future sensitivity of the NA62 experiment as well as a detailed evaluation of the model-specific limits from Big Bang nucleosynthesis. We also derive updated and more general limits on DM particles upscattered by cosmic rays, applicable to arbitrary energy- and momentum dependences of the scattering cross section. Finally we stress that dark matter self-interactions, when evaluated beyond the common s-wave approximation, place stringent limits independently of the dark matter production mechanism. These are, for the relevant parameter space, generically comparable to those that apply in the commonly studied freeze-out case. We conclude that the combination of existing (or expected) constraints from accelerators and astrophysics, combined with cosmological requirements, puts robust limits on the maximally possible nuclear scattering rate. In most regions of parameter space these are at least competitive with the best projected limits from currently planned direct detection experiments.
