Abstract:Abstract. The large excess of Dark Matter observed in the Universe and its particle nature is one of the key problems yet to be solved in particle physics. Despite the extensive success of the Standard Model, it is not able to explain this excess, which instead might be due to yet unknown particles, such as Weakly Interacting Massive Particles, that could be produced at the Large Hadron Collider. This contribution will give an overview of different approaches to finding evidence for Dark Matter with the ATLAS experiment in √ s = 8 TeV Run-1 data.

Abstract:We review the current status of accelerator, direct and indirect Dark Matter (DM) searches, focusing on the complementarity of different techniques and on the prospects for discovery. After taking a census of present and upcoming DM-related experiments, we review the motivations to go beyond an "accelerator-only" approach, and highlight the benefits of multidisciplinarity in the quest for DM.

Abstract:The nature of dark matter in the Universe is one of the hardest unsolved problems in modern physics. Indeed, on one hand, the overwhelming indirect evidence from astrophysics seems to leave no doubt about its existence; on the other hand, direct search experiments, especially those conducted with low-background detectors in underground laboratories all over the world, seem to deliver only null results with a few debated exceptions. Furthermore, the lack of predicted candidates on the LHC energy scale has made this dichotomy even more puzzling. We will recall the most important phases of this novel branch of experimental astro-particle physics, analyzing the interconnections among the main projects involved in this challenging quest, and we will draw conclusions slightly different from how the problem is commonly understood.

Abstract:The existence of Dark Matter (DM) is a well established fact since many decades, thanks to the observation of the effects of its gravitational interaction with the ordinary matter in the Universe. However, our knowledge of the Dark Matter features is still rather scarce. Indeed, one of the biggest quests in fundamental science today is the investigation of Dark Matter nature, from its origin to its composition, and the way its constituents interact with the ordinary matter, apart from gravity. Huge and ambitious efforts have been spent in the last years into its identification, concentrating especially on the search of viable Weakly Interacting Massive Particle candidates. However, no positive results have been achieved so far along this direction. On the other hand, many fascinating new ideas and models for its interpretation have been blooming: among them, an intriguing hypothesis is that the Dark Matter constituents could be neutral under Standard Model interactions, but they could interact through a new, still unknown, force under a "hidden" charge. This new hidden symmetry would be mediated by a massive gauge boson, the dark photon, which is expected to couple to the Standard Model via a kinetic mixing. The search for such a massive mediator has been pursued with large enthusiasm and dedication in the latest years, as its observation could be within the reach of many already existing experimental facilities, both based on accelerators or in smaller scale setups. This report reviews the present status and progress of the experimental searches in this field.

Abstract:Astrophysical observations suggest that most of the matter in the cosmos consists of a new form that has not been observed on Earth. The nature and origin of this mysterious dark matter are among the most pressing questions in fundamental science. In this review we summarize the current state of dark matter research from two perspectives. First, we provide an overview of the leading theoretical proposals for dark matter. And second, we describe how these proposals have driven a broad and diverse global search program for dark matter involving direct laboratory searches and astrophysical observations. This review is based on a Green Paper on dark matter prepared as part of the 2020 Astroparticle Community Planning initiative undertaken by the Canadian Subatomic Physics community but has been significantly updated to reflect recent advances.

Abstract:The complementarity of direct, indirect and collider searches for dark matter has improved our understanding concerning the properties of the dark matter particle. I will review the basic concepts that these methods rely upon and highlight what are the most important information they provide when it comes down to interpret the results in terms of Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs). Later, I go over some of the latest results emphasizing the implications to dark matter theory in a broad sense and point out recent developments and prospects in the field.

Searching for Dark Matter with the Future LHC Accelerator at CERN Using the CMS Detector

Abstract:The fraction of visible matter may be as small as about 1% of the total mass of the universe1. The missing dark matter could be baryonic matter in the form of black holes, Jupiter-like planets, white dwarf stars, etc. (collectively called MACHO’s for MAssive, Compact Halo Objects). This type of dark matter could account for much of the discrepancy from galactic rotation curves, but would not be able to account for the amount of dark matter needed on larger scales to explain galactic clustering or the simplest inflationary cosmological models, which require the matter density of the universe to be at the critical density. The missing dark matter could also be composed of elementary particles. The latter come in two different forms: hot dark matter, such as massive neutrinos which would be moving at speeds close to the speed of light, and cold dark matter, such as axions or the lightest superpartner of supersymmetric (SUSY) theories, which would typically be moving at non-relativistic velocities. In R-parity conserving SUSY theories, the lightest SUSY particle (LSP) has to be stable. A neutral LSP would interact weakly, like a neutrino, and would be very difficult to observe directly. The new accelerator to be built at CERN, called the LHC, should have sufficient energy to produce SUSY particles in abundance. Two detectors, CMS2 and ATLAS3, should be able to detect the presence of SUSY particles, and will engage in the search for supersymmetry. Thus, if dark matter is primarily made up of LSP’s, experiments at LHC should be able to discover dark matter indirectly, by finding an excess of events with missing transverse energy, due to LSP’s that escape the detector.

Abstract:Many astronomical observations have confirmed the existence of dark matter in the universe. According to the constraints on the properties of dark matter, the most attractive candidate is the'weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs)', and most experiments looking for dark matter are trying to find the signals of WIMPs. In this paper we describe the three main methods to detect WIMPs and their respective merits and demerits; the emphasis is on colliders and in particular the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The latest observations and most recently de-fined constraints on the properties of dark matter based on the LHC results are described in de-tail.

Abstract:One of the key questions in particle physics and astrophysics is the nature of dark matter, which existence has been confirmed in many astrophysical and cosmological observations. Besides direct and indirect detection experiments, collider searches for dark matter offer the unique possibility to not only detect dark matter particles but in case of discovery to also study their properties by making statements about the potential underlying theory. The search program for dark matter at the ATLAS and CMS experiments at the Large Hadron Collider is comprehensive, and includes both supersymmetric dark matter candidates and other alternatives. This review presents the latest status in these searches, with special focus on supersymmetric dark matter particles.

Abstract:The constituents of dark matter are still unknown, and the viable possibilities span a vast range of masses. The physics community has established searching for sub-GeV dark matter as a high priority and identified accelerator-based experiments as an essential facet of this search strategy. A key goal of the accelerator-based dark matter program is testing the broad idea of thermally produced sub-GeV dark matter through experiments designed to directly produce dark matter particles. The most sensitive way to search for the production of light dark matter is to use a primary electron beam to produce it in fixed-target collisions. The Light Dark Matter eXperiment (LDMX) is an electron-beam fixed-target missing-momentum experiment that realizes this approach and provides unique sensitivity to light dark matter in the sub-GeV range. This contribution provides an overview of the theoretical motivation, the main experimental challenges, how LDMX addresses these challenges, and projected sensitivities. We further describe the capabilities of LDMX to explore other interesting new and standard physics, such as visibly-decaying axion and vector mediators or rare meson decays, and to provide timely electronuclear scattering measurements that will inform the modeling of neutrino-nucleus scattering for DUNE.

Abstract:Underground laboratories host two kind of experiments at the frontier of our knowledge in Particle Physics, Astrophysics and Cosmology: the direct detection of the Dark Matter of the Universe and the search for the Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay of the nuclei. Both experimental quests pose great technical challenges which are being addressed in different ways by an important number of groups. Here a updated review of the efforts being done to detect Dark Matter particles is presented, emphasizing latest achievements.

Search for Z' Radiating from the Dark Matter at the LHC

Abstract:We discuss a collider probe of a dark sector model in which the dark matter is charged under a new, hidden $U(1)$ gauge group. In particular, we look for the so-called Darkstrahlung process, in which the final states dark matter radiates a new $Z'$ gauge boson and it manifests as dilepton resonances. This work emphasizes the potential of dilepton final states with missing transverse energy in probing the darkstrahlung process. We recast the ATLAS Run 2 search for dilepton resonances in association with missing energy in addition to the ATLAS and CMS searches for sleptons. We find that the recasted searches put strong constraints on the coupling between the dark matter and the $Z'$. Moreover, we evaluate refined search strategies for $Z'$ production and propose an analysis employing constraints on the lepton invariant mass and higher missing energy cut related to the darkstrahlung process. Simulation outcomes indicate substantial enhancements, particularly by a factor of 6 in regions featuring lower $Z'$ masses. Finally, we also discuss the case when the $Z'$ has a long lifetime, resulting in displaced decay of the boson.

Abstract:The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) has confirmed the Higgs mechanism to be responsible for generating mass in the Standard Model (SM), making it attractive to also consider spontaneous symmetry breaking as the origin of mass for new particles in a dark sector extension of the SM. Such a dark Higgs mechanism may in particular give mass to a dark matter candidate and to the gauge boson mediating its interactions (called dark photon). In this review we summarise the phenomenology of the resulting dark Higgs boson and discuss the corresponding search strategies with a focus on collider experiments. We consider both the case that the dark Higgs boson is heavier than the SM Higgs boson, in which case leading constraints come from direct searches for new Higgs bosons as well missing-energy searches at the LHC, and the case that the dark Higgs boson is (potentially much) lighter than the SM Higgs boson, such that the leading sensitivity comes from electron-positron colliders and fixed-target experiments. Of particular experimental interest for both cases is the associated production of a dark Higgs boson with a dark photon, which subsequently decays into SM fermions, dark matter particles or long-lived dark sector states. We also discuss the important role of exotic decays of the SM-like Higgs boson and complementary constraints arising from early-universe cosmology, astrophysics and direct searches for dark matter in laboratory experiments.

Light Dark Matter and Z′ Dark Force at Colliders

Abstract:Light DM, < 10 GeV, with sizeable direct detection rate is an interesting and less explored scenario. Collider searches can be very powerful, such as through the channel in which a pair of dark matter particle is produced in association with a jet. It is a generic possibility that the mediator of the interaction between dark matter and the nucleus will also be accessible at the Tevatron and the LHC. Therefore, collider search of the mediator can provide a more comprehensive probe of the dark matter and its interactions. In this article, to demonstrate the complementarity of these two approaches, we focus on the possibility of the mediator being a new U(1)′ gauge boson, which is probably the simplest model which allows a large direct detection cross section for a light dark matter candidate. We combine searches in the monojet + MET channel and dijet resonance search for the mediator. We find that for the mass of Z′ between 250 GeV and 4 TeV, resonance searches at the colliders provide stronger constraints on this model than the monojet + MET searches.

Abstract:This study aims to review the early history of dark matter study, such as observational evidence from galactic rotational curves, gravitational lensing, and the cosmic microwave background, among others. The observation of the bullet clusters, which strongly supports the existence of dark matter rather than the theory of modified gravity, is discussed. The N body simulations also suggest the existence of cold non-relativistic dark matter and the existence of a universal form of the dark matter density distribution profile. We introduce a standard mechanism of thermal freeze-out for dark matter relic abundance, i.e., an explanation of how the dark matter particles that were kept in thermal equilibrium in the early stages of the universe are later unable to stay in equilibrium due to the expansion of the universe. The typical dark matter candidates are the so-called WIMPs (weakly interacting massive particles). Popular WIMP candidates include the lightest supersymmetric particles such as neutralinos. Other WIMP candidates such as the lightest T odd particles in the little Higgs models and the lightest KK (Kluza-Klein) modes in the universal extra dimension models are also discussed. Non-WIMP dark matter candidates such as axions are briefly discussed. The basic ideas and methods of dark matter detection, such as underground direct detection, which involves dark matter scattering off target nuclei, and indirect detection in space, which involves dark matter annihilation or decay in galaxies, are reviewed with a focus on recent experimental developments. For underground direct detection, we begin with the basic formulas for elastic dark matter nuclei scattering and the general features of nuclear number dependence. Three types of observables are discussed: (1) direct recoil events, (2) solar modulation of the recoil events, and (3) directional effects or the day-night differences of the events. Then, we focus on the experiments studying low-mass dark matter below 10 GeV, such as SuperCDMS (super cryogenic dark matter search) and CDEX (China dark matter experiment), among others, with a special focus on the CDEX experiment, which uses point contact germanium detectors. Experiments studying high-mass dark matter using liquid argon, such as Xenon, PandaX (particle and astrophysical xenon detector), and DarkSide are also discussed. Directional detection experiments, such as DRIFT (directional recoil identification from tracks) and MIMAC (MIcro-tpc MAtrix of Chambers), are briefly discussed. For indirect detection experiments in space, we first introduce the basic theory of dark matter signals in cosmic rays and then discuss the importance of the propagation effects of high-energy cosmic rays, such as electrons, positrons, protons, antiprotons, and heavier cosmic ray nuclei. The uncertainties originating from various sources are also discussed. We then review recent experimental results, such as that from Fermi LAT (Fermi large area telescope) and AMS-02(Alpha magnetic spectrometer 02), with a focus on the most recent dark matter particle explorer (DAMPE) experiments. As nearby sources may contribute to CRE (cosmic ray electron) structures at high energies, the recently released DAMPE results on the CRE flux, which hinted at a narrow excess at energy of 1.4 TeV, is discussed in some detail. In general, a spectral structure with a narrow width appears to reveal the space time distribution of the sources. Future perspectives of heavier cosmic-ray nuclei, such as anti-deuteron and anti-helium, are also reviewed.

Abstract:Dark matter particles populating our galactic halo could be directly detected by measuring their scattering off target nuclei or electrons in a suitable detector. As this interaction is expected to occur with very low probability and would generate very small energy deposits, the detection is challenging; the possible identification of distinctive signatures (like an annual modulation in the interaction rates or directionality) to assign a dark matter origin to a possible observation is being considered. Here, the physics case of different dark matter direct detection experiments will be presented and the different and complementary techniques which are being applied or considered will be discussed, summarizing their features and latest results obtained. Special focus will be made on TPC-related projects; experiments using noble liquids have presently a leading role to constrain interaction cross sections of a wide range of dark matter candidates and gaseous detectors are very promising to explore specifically low mass dark matter as well as to measure directionality.

Abstract:We explore the mono-Z signature for dark matter searches at future high energy e(+)e(-) colliders. In the context of effective field theory, we consider two kinds of contact operators describing dark matter interactions with electroweak gauge bosons and with electron/positron, respectively. For five benchmark models, we propose kinematic cuts to distinguish signals from backgrounds for both charged leptonic and hadronic decay modes of the Z boson. We also present the experimental sensitivity to cutoff scales of effective operators and compare it with that of the Fermi-LAT indirect search and demonstrate the gains in significance for the several configurations of polarized beams.

Abstract:Dark matter may form bound states in a dark sector with an attractive force between two dark matter particles. Searches for dark matter at colliders can differ dramatically from routine searches if bound states, dubbed darkonia, are produced and decay into visible Standard-Model particles. In this work, we use three representative models with scalar, pseudo-scalar, and vector force carriers to map out the darkonium signatures at both high-energy and low-energy colliders. Some of the bound states can be stable due to generalized parity and charge-conjugation symmetries, while others decay into light dark-force carriers, which subsequently can decay at a displaced vertex. New signatures with a mix of missing energy and multiple di-lepton or di-jet vertices reconstructing intermediate darkonium resonances are within reach at the LHC and Belle II.
