Abstract:The design of a Martian autonomous rotary wing vehicle (MARV) is described. MARV is a 50-kg gross takeoff mass; coaxial helicopter designed for Mars exploration. Powered by a fuel cell system, it carries a payload of 10.8 kg over a range of 25 km with an endurance of 39 min including hover capability for 1 min. MARV is designed in response to the Request For Proposal from NASA/Sikorsky for the Year 2000 American Helicopter Society student design competition. The design covers aerodynamic and structural design of rotor blades, vehicle power plant, fuselage and landing gear, control system, transmission, and vehicle lander communications. A detailed mechanism for autonomous deployment of the vehicle from the lander is also described. This preliminary design study indicates that controlled vertical flight on Mars is feasible with existing technology.

Abstract:Mid-Air Deployment (MAD) of a rotorcraft during Entry, Descent and Landing (EDL) on Mars eliminates the need to carry a propulsion or airbag landing system. This reduces the total mass inside the aeroshell by more than 100 kg and simplifies the aeroshell architecture. MAD's lighter and simpler design is likely to bring the risk and cost associated with the mission down. Moreover, the lighter entry mass enables landing in the Martian highlands, at elevations inaccessible to current EDL technologies. This paper proposes a novel MAD concept for a Mars helicopter. We suggest a minimum science payload package to perform relevant science in the highlands. A variant of the Ingenuity helicopter is proposed to provide increased deceleration during MAD, and enough lift to fly the science payload in the highlands. We show in simulation that the lighter aeroshell results in a lower terminal velocity (30 m/s) at the end of the parachute phase of the EDL, and at higher altitudes than other approaches. After discussing the aerodynamics, controls, guidance, and mechanical challenges associated with deploying at such speed, we propose a backshell architecture that addresses them to release the helicopter in the safest conditions. Finally, we implemented the helicopter model and aerodynamic descent perturbations in the JPL Dynamics and Real-Time Simulation (DARTS)framework. Preliminary performance evaluation indicates landing and helicopter operation scan be achieved up to 5 km MOLA (Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter reference).

Abstract:Mid-Air Helicopter Delivery (MAHD) is a new Entry, Descent and Landing (EDL) architecture to enable in situ mobility for Mars science at lower cost than previous missions. It uses a jetpack to slow down a Mars Science Helicopter (MSH) after separation from the backshell, and reach aerodynamic conditions suitable for helicopter take-off in mid air. For given aeroshell dimensions, only MAHD's lander-free approach leaves enough room in the aeroshell to accommodate the largest rotor option for MSH. This drastically improves flight performance, notably allowing +150\% increased science payload mass. Compared to heritage EDL approaches, the simpler MAHD architecture is also likely to reduce cost, and enables access to more hazardous and higher-elevation terrains on Mars. This paper introduces a design for the MAHD system architecture and operations. We present a mechanical configuration that fits both MSH and the jetpack within the 2.65-m Mars heritage aeroshell, and a jetpack control architecture which fully leverages the available helicopter avionics. We discuss preliminary numerical models of the flow dynamics resulting from the interaction between the jets, the rotors and the side winds. We define a force-torque sensing architecture capable of handling the wind and trimming the rotors to prepare for safe take-off. Finally, we analyze the dynamic environment and closed-loop control simulation results to demonstrate the preliminary feasibility of MAHD.

Abstract:Prior to its successful flights on Mars, the Ingenuity Mars Helicopter system underwent extensive flight dynamics testing in the 25-ft Space Simulator facility, a low pressure environmental chamber at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), which can re-create relevant Martian conditions on Earth. This facility, while large, is not large enough for free or tethered forward flight tests. In this work, an open-jet, multi-fan wind tunnel concept is presented, which was integrated into the JPL facility to simulate the external freestream flow of forward flight scenarios in a low-density environment. A theoretical and experimental analysis was performed to evaluate the possibility of utilizing commercially available 80 x 80 mm axial flow cooling fan units for this type of wind tunnel. Sub-scale tests found that under Martian conditions, fans deliver approximately 30% reduced flow rates for the same RPM compared to Earth conditions due to decreased efficiencies at low Reynolds numbers. However, fans can run at higher RPM in low-density fluids, with the RPM increase being specific to the fan motor. While power consumption dropped by more than 90%, fans experienced higher thermal loads due to reduced heat convection. The study concludes that the investigated type of cooling fan can operate without modification in a low-density environment, offering a low-cost and easily adaptable wind tunnel solution. Informed by ambient flow field measurements on a comparable multi-fan wind tunnel, a low-density full-scale facility with 441 individually controlled fan units was constructed and used for aerodynamic testing of an engineering model of Ingenuity.Graphic abstract

Abstract:The Ingenuity Helicopter will be deployed from the Perseverance Rover for a 30-sol experimental campaign shortly after the rover lands and is commissioned. We describe the helicopter and the associated Technology Demonstration experiment it will conduct, as well as its role in informing future helicopter missions to Mars. This helicopter will demonstrate, for the first time, autonomous controlled flight of an aircraft in the Mars environment, thus opening up an aerial dimension to Mars exploration. The \(1.8~\text{kg}\), \(1.2~\text{m}\) diameter helicopter, with twin rotors in a counter-rotating co-axial configuration, will help validate aerodynamics, control, navigation and operations concepts for flight in the thin Martian atmosphere. The rover supports a radio link between the helicopter and mission operators on Earth, and information returned from a planned set of five flights, each lasting up to 90 seconds, will inform the development of new Mars helicopter designs for future missions. Such designs in the \(4~\text{kg}\text{--}30~\text{kg}\) range would have the capability to fly many kilometers daily and carry science payloads of \(1~\text{kg}\text{--}5~\text{kg}\). Small helicopters can be deployed as scouts for future rovers helping to select interesting science targets, determine optimal rover driving routes, and providing contextual high-vantage imagery. Larger craft can be operated in standalone fashion with a tailored complement of science instruments with direct-to-orbiter communication enabling wide-area operations. Other roles including working cooperatively with a central lander to provide area-wide sampling and science investigations. For future human exploration at Mars, helicopter can be employed to provide reconnaissance.

Experimental Force and Deformation Measurements of Bioinspired Flapping Wings in Ultra-Low Martian Density Environment

Abstract:A Mars flight vehicle could provide a third-dimension for ground-based rovers and supplement orbital observation stations, providing a much more detailed aerial view of the landscape as well as unprecedented survey of the atmosphere of Mars. However, flight on Mars is a difficult proposition due to the very low atmospheric density, which is approximately 1.3% of sea level density on Earth. While traditional aircraft efficiency suffers in the low Reynolds number environment, insect inspired flapping wing flyers on Mars might be able to take advantage of the same lift enhancing effects as insects on Earth. The present work investigates the feasibility of using a bioinspired, flapping wing flight vehicle to produce lift in an ultra-low-density Martian atmosphere. A four-wing prototype, inspired by a prior computational study, was placed in an atmospheric chamber to simulate Martian density. Lift and wing deformation were simultaneously recorded. In Earth density conditions, the passive pitch wing deflection increased monotonically with flapping frequency. On the other hand, in the Martian density environment, the passive pitch deflection angles were very erratic. The measured lift peaked at around 8 grams at 16 Hz. These measurements suggest that sufficient aerodynamic forces for hover on Mars can be generated for a 6-gram flapping wing vehicle. Also, the performance can potentially be improved by better understanding the fluid-structure interaction in ultra-low Mars density condition.

Abstract:A solar-powered jumping-gliding Martian aircraft is proposed as a new tool for Mars exploration, designed especially to perform long-term wide-range detection. A completely new way of continues detection performed by aircraft is created. A preliminary design of the jumping-gliding Martian aircraft is carried out while its flight performance is analyzed afterwards. The conceptual design of a large-aspect ratio foldable wing with a thin fuselage and a jumping device is put forward. The solar energy model, aerodynamic model and weight mode are all built. The energy balance models are established for the periods of detecting mission that the aircraft lands on the ground for harvesting solar energy and flies in the sky. The gliding performance of this aircraft is particularly discussed here.

Abstract:Any rotorcraft on Mars will fly in a low pressure and dusty environment. It is well known that helicopters on Earth become highly-charged due, in part, to triboelectric effects when flying in sandy conditions. We consider the possibility that the Mars Helicopter Scout (MHS), called Ingenuity, flying at Mars as part of the Mars2020 Perseverance mission, will also become charged due to grain-rotor triboelectric interactions. Given the low Martian atmospheric pressure of ~ 5 Torr, the tribocharge on the blade could become intense enough to stimulate gas breakdown near the surface of the rotorcraft. We modeled the grain-blade interaction as a line of current that forms along the blade edge in the region where grain-blade contacts are the greatest. This current then spreads throughout the entire connected quasi-conductive regions of the rotorcraft. Charge builds up on the craft and the dissipative pathway to remove charge is back into the atmosphere. We find that for blade tribocharging currents that form in an ambient atmospheric dust load, system current balance and charge dissipation can be accomplished via the nominal atmospheric conductive currents. However, at takeoff and landing, the rotorcraft could be in a rotor-created particulate cloud, leading to local atmospheric electrical breakdown near the rotorcraft. We especially note that the atmospheric currents in the breakdown are not large enough to create any hazard to Ingenuity itself, but Ingenuity operations can be considered a unique experiment that provides a test of the electrical properties of the Martian near-surface atmosphere.

Numerical Investigation on Aerodynamics of a Rectangular Blade Rotor under Mars Air Conditions Using Large Eddy Simulation

Abstract:The study of the aerodynamics of a flight vehicle under Martian air conditions is experimentally difficult due to its characteristics such as low air density and temperature, making the vehicle operate at an ultra-low Reynolds number, which in turn introduces a complex flow field. In this paper, to find a proper computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method with which to better understand the aerodynamics of rotor-type aircraft under Martian air conditions, the aerodynamic performance of a rotor with rectangular blades under ultra-low density Martian air conditions is studied. A simulation scheme using a large eddy simulation solver and sliding meshing technology is established, and the method is verified based on experimental results from a Mars Air Simulator (MAS). In addition, the influence of the test bench and chamber is investigated through flow field analysis. The results show that the established method can predict lift in a very accurate manner, but that the torque prediction is not so promising. The study also determines that the fixture and the chamber wall of an MAS has little influence on the prediction of aerodynamic performance due to the quickly decreasing of flow speed and dissipation of vortexes. The test bench has about 5% influence on lift prediction, possibly due to the ground effect of the bench. In addition, simulation under actual Martian air conditions shows that the results agree well with the MAS experiment's results, indicating that the temperature difference has little influence on the lift performance, and therefore that the MAS is a good tool for the lift prediction of Martian helicopters.

Abstract:This paper details a significant milestone towards maturing a buoyant aerial robotic platform, or aerobot, for flight in the Venus clouds. We describe two flights of our subscale altitude-controlled aerobot, fabricated from the materials necessary to survive Venus conditions. During these flights over the Nevada Black Rock desert, the prototype flew at the identical atmospheric densities as 54 to 55 km cloud layer altitudes on Venus. We further describe a first-principle aerobot dynamics model which we validate against the Nevada flight data and subsequently employ to predict the performance of future aerobots on Venus. The aerobot discussed in this paper is under JPL development for an in-situ mission flying multiple circumnavigations of Venus, sampling the chemical and physical properties of the planet's atmosphere and also remotely sensing surface properties.

Abstract:By analyzing the physical and aerodynamic principles, the vertical dynamics of a mini unmanned helicopter is modeled, and from which the analytic form of linearized model is derived out. A vertical velocity controller is designed based on this model, which scheduled by a multilevel finite state machine (FSM). In the addition, an effective autonomous landing programming method with effectively utilizing several sensors is proposed. A mount of flight experimental results have shown that the designed controller and programming method can successfully perform autonomous landing flights on several grounds of specific characteristics.

Abstract:Abstract This paper briefly reviews the literature inherent of the design of airfoil and rotorcrafts for atmospheric flight on Mars. The interest toward the red planet exploration has considerably increased as result of the successful deployment of the Perseverance Rover and the continuous tests developed by SpaceX’s launch vehicle, Starship. While the Mars 2020 Mission is currently in progress, the first controlled flight on another planet have been proven in April 2021 with the Vertical Take-off and Landing of the Ingenuity rotorcraft in Mars. In addition, the rotorcraft Dragonfly is expected to achieve the same endeavor in Titan, the largest moon of Saturn, by 2036. Continuous efforts have been oriented to the development of new technologies and aircraft configurations to improve the current designs and performance. In this paper we summarize the different Mars drone design and configuration approaches carried out by several research groups in the last two decades. We also briefly layout the main challenges related to the lift generation problem for a Mas rotorcraft.

Abstract:Space agencies have been incessantly working to propose a sustainable architecture for human Mars mission. But, before proceeding to a giant leap and accomplishing those mission intent, it is significant to know the extent of possibility to expand terrestrial species on the vast red planet. Decades of scientific exploration and experimentation through planetary landers and rovers showed uncertain and unsatisfactory results to determine the possibility of life on Mars. Consequently, the technological limitation has impeded to perform in-situ experimentation and analysis on the surface. Therefore, we require soil samples through Mars sample return vehicles for superior analysis in our ground-based laboratories or on-orbit analysis aboard International Space Station from the aspect of planetary protection policy. Sampling analysis either in ground or orbit will report the presence of fundamental constituents to harbor life. To effectuate this intent, we have proposed a unique sample return architecture integrated with large solar Montgolfier. Here, we deploy parachute and retro propulsion thrusters to deliver sample return vehicles on to the surface and systematic ascend with the aid of solar Montgolfier to propel the MSRV out of Mars atmosphere. Subsequently, the MSRV effectuates orbital rendezvous with orbiter for the refueling process and safe return. The proposed concept is cheap, robust and simple as compared to the current state of MSR architectures ultimately minimizing the technological necessities. It also detains backup plans that were found to be nowhere presented in any of sample return strategies. Further, we have extended our discussion to comprehensively analyze entire MSR architecture with our concept for mission feasibility.

Abstract:The sparse atmosphere on the surface of Mars provides the necessary flight conditions for Mars unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to perform low-altitude flights. This work presents a comprehensive overview of key technologies in the development of Mars UAVs, with a specific focus on rotary-wing Mars UAVs. It summarizes prototypes of rotary-wing Mars UAVs developed by various global research institutions. It reviews essential technologies in rotary-wing Mars UAV research, including the Mars near-surface atmospheric environment, aerodynamic characteristics, and principles of low-pressure flight control. This work also summarizes various experimental setups and ground test results for rotary-wing Mars UAVs. Furthermore, it discusses the future development trends of rotary-wing Mars UAVs.
Achieving bioinspired flapping wing hovering flight solutions on Mars via wing scaling

Abstract:Achieving atmospheric flight on Mars is challenging due to the low density of the Martian atmosphere. Aerodynamic forces are proportional to the atmospheric density, which limits the use of conventional aircraft designs on Mars. Here, we show using numerical simulations that a flapping wing robot can fly on Mars via bioinspired dynamic scaling. Trimmed, hovering flight is possible in a simulated Martian environment when dynamic similarity with insects on earth is achieved by preserving the relevant dimensionless parameters while scaling up the wings three to four times its normal size. The analysis is performed using a well-validated 2D Navier-Stokes equation solver, coupled to a 3D flight dynamics model to simulate free flight. The majority of power required is due to the inertia of the wing because of the ultra-low density. The inertial flap power can be substantially reduced through the use of a torsional spring. The minimum total power consumption is 188 W kg-1 when the torsional spring is driven at its natural frequency.

Abstract:Abstract A fixed-wing aircraft called Mars Airplane Balloon Experiment −2 (MABE2) developed by the authors was the subject of high-altitude flight demonstration test in this paper, which can simulate the near-actual environment of a Martian atmospheric flight. Although the flight condition is in the low-Reynolds-number region due to low density at high altitude, the wing suffers from aeroelastic deformation given the relatively high dynamic pressure load in the pull-up phase. Stereophotogrammetry was applied in the 6.5 m × 5.5 m low-speed wind tunnel at the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), aiming to optically measure MABE2’s aeroelastic deformation under dynamic pressure loads equivalent to high-altitude flight test, with the MABE2’s reinforced structural strength. The results of the accuracy test indicated that stereophotogrammetry measures aeroelastic deformation at high accuracy of ±0.1 mm around the image center and ±0.3 mm around the edge. A slight deflection of up to 4 mm was observed on the main wing, whereas both the main and tail wings were hardly twisted. Compared with flight-simulation-assumed errors, these deformations are extremely small and have a negligible effect on the high-altitude flight test. The study results confirmed the practicality and efficiency of this optical measurement technique in aeroelastic deformation measurement for a real light aircraft.

Abstract:Exploration of terrestrial planets such as Mars are conducted using orbiters, landers and rovers. Cameras and instruments onboard orbiters have enabled global mapping of Mars at low spatial resolution. Landers and rovers such as the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) carry state-of-the-art instruments to characterize small localized areas. This leaves a critical gap in exploration capabilities: mapping regions in the hundreds of kilometers range. In this paper, we extend our work on CubeSat-sized sailplanes with detailed design studies of different aircraft configurations and payloads, identifying generalized design principles for autonomous sailplane-based surface reconnaissance and science applications. We further analyze potential wing deployment technologies, including conventional inflatables with hardened membranes, use of composite inflatables, and quick-setting foam. We perform detailed modeling of the Martian atmosphere and possible flight patterns at Jerezo crater using the Mars Regional Atmospheric Modeling System (MRAMS) to provide realistic atmospheric conditions at the landing site for NASA's 2020 rover. We revisit the feasibility of the Mars Sailplane concept, comparing it to previously proposed solutions, and identifying pathways to build laboratory prototypes for high-altitude Earth based testing. Abstract:In view to prepare Mars human exploration, it is necessary to promote and lead, at the international level, a highly interdisciplinary program, involving specialists of geochemistry, geophysics, atmospheric science, space weather, and biology. The goal of this program will be to elaborate concepts of individual instruments, then of integrated instrumental packages, able to collect exhaustive data sets of environmental parameters from future landers and rovers of Mars, and to favour the conditions of their implementation. Such a program is one of the most urgent need for preparing human exploration, in order to develop mitigation strategies aimed at ensuring the safety of human explorers, and minimizing risk for surface operations. A few main areas of investigation may be listed: particle and radiation environment, chemical composition of atmosphere, meteorology, chemical composition of dust, surface and subsurface material, water in the subsurface, physical properties of the soil, search for an hypothesized microbial activity, characterization of radio-electric properties of the Martian ionosphere. Scientists at the origin of the present paper, already involved at a high degree of responsibility in several Mars missions, and actively preparing in situ instrumentation for future landed platforms (Netlander--now cancelled, MSL-09), express their readiness to participate in both ESA/AURORA and NASA programs of Mars human exploration. They think that the formation of a Mars Environment working group at ESA, in the course of the AURORA definition phase, could act positively in favour of the program, by increasing its scientific cross-section and making it still more focused on human exploration.

Abstract:A new 3-axis flight simulator based on MR-J2S ac servo system is designed for the research of the flight control system and inertial navigation system of a micro unmanned helicopter.The simulator is horizontal arrangement and driven by electric motors.Photoelectric encoders are used to be feedback elements.The system has a two-stage control structure composed of host computer and slave computer.This simulator has the characteristics of high precision,simple structure and low cost.The experimental results indicate that this simulator can meet the demands of hardware-in-the-loop simulation of the micro unmanned helicopter.
