Abstract:We show how strongly interacting two-dimensional Dirac fermions can be realized with ultracold atoms in a two-dimensional optical square lattice with an experimentally realistic, inherent gauge field, which breaks time-reversal and inversion symmetries. We find remarkable phenomena in a temperature range around a tenth of the Fermi-temperature, accessible with present experimental techniques: at zero chemical potential, besides a conventional s-wave superconducting phase, unconventional superconductivity with non-local bond pairing arises. In a temperature versus doping phase diagram, the unconventional superconducting phase exhibits a dome structure, reminiscent of the phase diagram for high-temperature superconductors and heavy fermions.

Abstract:Geometric properties of lattice quantum gravity in two dimensions are studied numerically via Monte Carlo on Euclidean Dynamical Triangulations. A new computational method is proposed to simulate gravity coupled with fermions, which allows the study of interacting theories on a lattice, such as non-Riemannian gravity models. This was tested on Majorana spinors, where we obtained a Hausdorff dimension dH=4.22±0.04 , consistent with the bounds from the literature 4.19 .

2D Fermions and Statistical Mechanics: Critical Dimers and Dirac Fermions in a background gauge field

Abstract:In the limit of the lattice spacing going to zero, we consider the dimer model on isoradial graphs in the presence of singular $SL(N,\mathbb{C})$ gauge fields flat away from a set of punctures. We consider the cluster expansion of this twisted dimer partition function show it matches an analogous cluster expansion of the 2D Dirac partition function in the presence of this gauge field. The latter is often referred to as a tau function. This reproduces and generalizes various computations of Dubédat (J. Eur. Math. Soc. 21 (2019), no. 1, pp. 1-54). In particular, both sides' cluster expansion are matched up term-by-term and each term is shown to equal a sum of a particular holomorphic integral and its conjugate. On the dimer side, we evaluate the terms in the expansion using various exact lattice-level identities of discrete exponential functions and the inverse Kasteleyn matrix. On the fermion side, the cluster expansion leads us to two novel series expansions of tau functions, one involving the Fuschian representation and one involving the monodromy representation.

Abstract:The study of matter fields on an ensemble of random geometries is a difficult problem still in need of new methods and ideas. We will follow a point of view inspired by probability theory techniques that relies on an expansion of the two point function as a sum over random walks. An analogous expansion for Fermions on non-Euclidean geometries is still lacking. Casiday et al. [Laplace and Dirac operators on graphs , Linear and Multilinear Algebra (2022) 1] proposed a classical "Dirac walk" diffusing on vertices and edges of an oriented graph with a square root of the graph Laplacian. In contrast to the simple random walk, each step of the walk is given a sign depending on the orientation of the edge it goes through. In a toy model, we propose here to study the Green functions, spectrum and the spectral dimension of such "Dirac walks" on the Bethe lattice, a d-regular tree. The recursive structure of the graph makes the problem exactly solvable. Notably, we find that the spectrum develops a gap and that the spectral dimension of the Dirac walk matches that of the simple random walk (d s =1 for d=2 and d s =3 for d ≧3).

Fermionic Non-Abelian Fractional Chern Insulators from Dipolar Interactions

Abstract:We study fermions on a triangular lattice model that exhibits topological flatbands characterized by nonzero Chern numbers. Our scheme stems from the well-known Hofstadter model but the next-nearest-neighbor hopping is introduced, which is crucial for tuning the lowest band to be nearly flat. Differing from previous proposals with the necessity of multiparticle interactions, we consider the more realistic long-range dipolar interaction combined with two-body short-range attractions between fermions. We show the realization of the non-Abelian nu = 1/2 Moore-Read fractional Chern insulators, and strong evidence for the existence of the more exotic nu = 3/5 Read-Rezayi fractional Chern insulators. Our results provide insights for the experimental realization of these exotic states by realistic two-body interactions and thus facilitates the implementation of the universal topological quantum computation.
Simple probability distributions on a Fock-space lattice

Abstract:We consider some aspects of a standard model employed in studies of many-body localization: interacting spinless fermions with quenched disorder, for non-zero filling fraction, here on $d$-dimensional lattices. The model may be recast as an equivalent tight-binding model on a `Fock-space (FS) lattice' with an extensive local connectivity. In the thermodynamic limit exact results are obtained for the distributions of local FS coordination numbers, FS site-energies, and the density of many-body states. All such distributions are well captured by exact diagonalization on the modest system sizes amenable to numerics. Care is however required in choosing the appropriate variance for the eigenvalue distribution, which has implications for reliable identification of mobility edges.

Abstract:The recent theoretical discovery of fractional Chern insulators (FCIs) has provided an important new way to realize topologically ordered states in lattice models. In earlier works, on-site and nearest-neighbor Hubbard-like interactions have been used extensively to stabilize Abelian FCIs in systems with nearly flat, topologically nontrivial bands. However, attempts to use two-body interactions to stabilize non-Abelian FCIs, where the ground state in the presence of impurities can be massively degenerate and manipulated through anyon braiding, have proven very difficult in uniform lattice systems. Here, we study the remarkable effect of long-range interactions in a lattice model that possesses an exactly flat lowest band with a unit Chern number. When spinless bosons with two-body long-range interactions partially fill the lowest Chern band, we find convincing evidence of gapped, bosonic Read-Rezayi (RR) phases with non-Abelian anyon statistics. We characterize these states through studying topological degeneracies, the overlap between the ground states of two-body interactions and the exact RR ground states of three- and four-body interactions, and state counting in the particle-cut entanglement spectrum. Moreover, we demonstrate how an approximate lattice form of Haldane's pseudopotentials, analogous to that in the continuum, can be used as an efficient guiding principle in the search for lattice models with stable non-Abelian phases.
Understanding Fermionic Generalized Symmetries

Abstract:We explore new aspects of internal fermionic shifting symmetries, present in physical systems such as free Dirac spinors and p-form tensor-spinor fields. We propose a novel procedure to gauge these global symmetries, which also introduces a new Stückelberg mechanism to give a mass to free fermionic fields. Furthermore, we find new magnetic fermionic symmetries in these physical systems whose charged objects are disorder operators. For the case of a Dirac spinor, we discuss an dual description, where the magnetic symmetry acts on the holonomies of a dual 2-form tensor-spinor. Further generalizations such as higher-group-like structures are also discussed.

Topological Aspects of Dirac Fermions in a Kagomé Lattice

Abstract:The Dirac fermion with linear dispersion in the kagomé lattice governs the low-energy physics of different valleys at two inequivalent corners of hexagonal Brillouin zone. The effective Hamiltonian based on the cyclic permutation symmetry of sublattices is constructed to show that the topology of Dirac fermions at these two valleys is characterized by opposite winding numbers. For spinless fermions, the Dirac semimetal phase is unstable against the many-particle interactions due to the intervalley scattering, which spontaneously breaks the translation symmetry. The Dirac fermions acquire a mass term from the simultaneous charge and bond orderings. In this phase, the developed bond texture underlies a hollow-star-of-David pattern in a tripled Wigner-Seitz cell of kagomé lattice. It is further demonstrated that the twisting of Dirac mass with vorticity leads to zero Dirac modes at the vortex core, which are intimately related to the fractionalization. The hollow-star-of-David phase is shown to have a distinct $\mathbb{Z}_6$ Berry phase with its sign-change counterpart of Dirac mass, i.e. the hexagonal phase, shedding light on the topological origin of zero Dirac modes around the vortex core.

Dirac Operators on Configuration Spaces: Fermions with Half-integer Spin, Real Structure, and Yang-Mills Quantum Field Theory

Abstract:In this paper we continue the development of a spectral triple-like construction on a configuration space of gauge connections. We have previously shown that key elements of bosonic and fermionic quantum field theory emerge from such a geometrical framework. In this paper we solve a central problem concerning the inclusion of fermions with half-integer spin into this framework. We map the tangent space of the configuration space into a similar space based on spinors and use this map to construct a Dirac operator on the configuration space. We also construct a real structure acting in a Hilbert space over the configuration space. Finally, we show that the self-dual and anti-self-dual sectors of the Hamiltonian of a non-perturbative quantum Yang-Mills theory emerge from a unitary transformation of a Dirac equation on a configuration space of gauge fields. The dual and anti-dual sectors emerge in a two-by-two matrix structure.

Fermion quartets on the square lattice

Abstract:We study a microscopic model for four spinless fermions on the square lattice which exhibits a quartet bound state in the strong coupling regime. The four-particle quantum states are analyzed using symmetry arguments and by introducing a zoo of relevant lattice animals. These considerations, as well as variational and exact diagonalization calculations demonstrate the existence of a narrow quartet band at small hopping and a first order transition to delocalized fermions at a critical hopping parameter, in qualitative contrast to, e. g., the BCS-BEC crossover in the attractive Hubbard model. In the case of pure attraction, an intermediate phase is found, in which a more extended and presumably more mobile hybrid quartet dominates the ground state. We comment on the relevance of the spin degree of freedom and on the reasons why electron quartetting is rarely observed in real materials.

Abstract:We show how fermionic statistics can be naturally incorporated in tensor networks on arbitrary graphs through the use of graded Hilbert spaces. This formalism allows to use tensor network methods for fermionic lattice systems in a local way, avoiding the need of a Jordan-Wigner transformation or the explicit tracking of leg crossings by swap gates in 2D tensor networks. The graded Hilbert spaces can be readily integrated with other internal and lattice symmetries in tensor networks, and only require minor extensions to an existing tensor network software package. We review and benchmark the fermionic versions of common algorithms for matrix product states and projected entangled-pair states.

This is shown by use of Landau's Fermi liquid theory, with quasiparticles interpreted as adiabatically dressed fermions. An application of this method is included, where boundary excitations of a two-dimensional quantum Hall electron system are studied.

Abstract:We present a class of one-dimensional generic spinless fermion lattice Hamiltonians that express quasi-Fermi liquid physics, manifesting both Luttinger and Fermi liquid features due to solely irrelevant interactions. Using infinite matrix product state techniques, we unveil its universal structure by calculating static and dynamic responses. Key features include a finite discontinuity in the momentum distribution at the Fermi level, despite power-law singularities in the spectral function protected by particle-hole symmetry. Away from half-filling Landau quasiparticles emerge. Charge dynamics show either high-energy bound states or concentration of spectral weight within the continuum for attractive or repulsive interactions, respectively. These universal features are realized across multiple models and energy scales thus reifying the quasi-Fermi liquid as a unique paradigm for one-dimensional fermions.

Abstract:We investigate the properties of the Dirac operator on manifolds with boundaries in presence of the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer boundary condition. An exact counting of the number of edge states for boundaries with isometry of a sphere is given. We show that the problem with the above boundary condition can be mapped to one where the manifold is extended beyond the boundary and the boundary condition is replaced by a delta function potential of suitable strength. We also briefly highlight how the problem of the self-adjointness of the operators in the presence of moving boundaries can be simplified by suitable transformations which render the boundary fixed and modify the Hamiltonian and the boundary condition to reflect the effect of moving boundary.
