Abstract:I review recent progress in simplicial quantum gravity in three and four dimensions, in particular new results on the phase structure of modified models of dynamical triangulations, the application of a strong-coupling expansion, and the benefits provided by including degenerate triangulations. In addition, I describe some recent numerical and analytical results on anisotropic crystalline membranes.

Random Disks of Constant Curvature: the Lattice Story

Abstract:We lay the groundwork for a UV-complete formulation of the Euclidean Jackiw-Teitelboim two-dimensional models of quantum gravity when the boundary lengths are finite, emphasizing the discretized approach. The picture that emerges is qualitatively new. For the disk topology, the problem reduces to counting so-called self-overlapping curves, that are closed loops that bound a distorted disk, with an appropriate multiplicity. We build a matrix model that does the correct counting. The theories in negative, zero and positive curvatures have the same UV description but drastically different macroscopic properties. The Schwarzian theory emerges in the limit of very large and negative cosmological constant in the negative curvature model, as an effective theory valid on distance scales much larger than the curvature length scale. In positive curvature, we argue that large geometries are ubiquitous and that the theory exists only for positive cosmological constant. Our discussion is pedagogical and includes a review of several relevant topics.

Abstract:We study Wilson loop expectations in lattice Yang-Mills models with a compact Lie group $G$. Using tools recently introduced in a companion paper, we provide alternate derivations, interpretations, and generalizations of several recent theorems about Brownian motion limits (Dahlqvist), lattice string trajectories (Chatterjee and Jafarov) and surface sums (Magee and Puder). We show further that one can express Wilson loop expectations as sums over embedded planar maps in a manner that applies to any matrix dimension $N \geq 1$, any inverse temperature $\beta>0$, and any lattice dimension $d \geq 2$. When $G=\mathrm{U}(N)$, the embedded maps we consider are pairs $(\mathcal M, \phi)$ where $\mathcal M$ is a planar (or higher genus) map and $\phi$ is a graph homomorphism from $\mathcal M$ to a lattice such as $\mathbb Z^d$. The faces of $\mathcal M$ come in two partite classes: $\textit{edge-faces}$ (each mapped by $\phi$ onto a single edge) and $\textit{plaquette-faces}$ (each mapped by $\phi$ onto a single plaquette). The weight of a lattice edge $e$ is the Weingarten function applied to the partition whose parts are given by half the boundary lengths of the faces in $\phi^{-1}(e)$. (The Weingarten function becomes quite simple in the $N\to \infty$ limit.) The overall weight of an embedded map is proportional to $N^\chi$ (where $\chi$ is the Euler characteristic) times the product of the edge weights. We establish analogous results for $\mathrm{SU}(N)$, $\mathrm{O}(N)$, $\mathrm{SO}(N)$, and $\mathrm{Sp}(N/2)$, where the embedded surfaces and weights take a different form. There are several variants of these constructions. In this context, we present a list of relevant open problems spanning several disciplines: random matrix theory, representation theory, statistical physics, and the theory of random surfaces, including random planar maps and Liouville quantum gravity.

Fully packed loop models on finite geometries

Abstract:Fully packed loop models describe the statistics of closely packed nested polygons on the square lattice. Many exact results can be obtained for these models, even for finite geometries, using their close relationship to alternating-sign matrices and the solvable six-vertex and O(n=1) lattice models. Some results for the exact partition function of fully packed loop models on various finite geometries are briefly reviewed, as well as the well-known order-disorder bulk phase transition present in these models. A detailed study is presented of the distribution of boundary nests of polygons in fully packed loop models with mirror or rotational symmetry. The probability distribution function of such nests, as well as the average number of nests, are obtained analytically, albeit conjecturally. It is further shown that fully packed loop models undergo another phase transition as a function of the boundary nest fugacity. At criticality, we derive a scaling form for the nest distribution function which displays an unusual non-Gaussian cubic exponential behaviour.

Abstract:Motivated by the concept of geometrical frustration, we introduce a class of statistical mechanics lattice models for the glass transition. Monte Carlo simulations in three dimensions show that they display a dynamical glass transition which is very similar to that observed in other off-lattice systems and which does not depend on a specific dynamical rule. Whereas their analytic solution within the Bethe approximation shows that they do have a discontinuous glass transition compatible with the numerical observations.

Abstract:We consider lattice Universes with spatial topologies T×T×T$$T\times T\times T$$, T×T×R$$ T\times T\times R $$, and T×R×R$$ T\times R\times R$$. In the Newtonian limit of General Relativity, we solve the Poisson equation for the gravitational potential in the enumerated models. In the case of point-like massive sources in the T×T×T$$T\times T\times T$$ model, we demonstrate that the gravitational potential has no definite values on the straight lines joining identical masses in neighboring cells, i.e. at points where masses are absent. Clearly, this is a nonphysical result, since the dynamics of cosmic bodies is not determined in such a case. The only way to avoid this problem and get a regular solution at any point of the cell is the smearing of these masses over some region. Therefore, the smearing of gravitating bodies in N$$N$$-body simulations is not only a technical method but also a physically substantiated procedure. In the cases of T×T×R$$ T\times T\times R $$ and T×R×R$$ T\times R\times R$$ topologies, there is no way to get any physically reasonable and nontrivial solution. The only solutions we can get here are the ones which reduce these topologies to the T×T×T$$T\times T\times T$$ one.

Abstract:In this paper we investigate a model for quantum gravity on finite noncommutative spaces using the theory of blobbed topological recursion. The model is based on a particular class of random finite real spectral triples ${(\mathcal{A}, \mathcal{H}, D , \gamma , J) \,}$, called random matrix geometries of type ${(1,0) \,}$, with a fixed fermion space ${(\mathcal{A}, \mathcal{H}, \gamma , J) \,}$, and a distribution of the form ${e^{- \mathcal{S} (D)} {\mathop{}\!\mathrm{d}} D}$ over the moduli space of Dirac operators. The action functional ${\mathcal{S} (D)}$ is considered to be a sum of terms of the form ${\prod_{i=1}^s \mathrm{Tr} \left( {D^{n_i}} \right)}$ for arbitrary ${s \geqslant 1 \,}$. The Schwinger-Dyson equations satisfied by the connected correlators ${W_n}$ of the corresponding multi-trace formal 1-Hermitian matrix model are derived by a differential geometric approach. It is shown that the coefficients ${W_{g,n}}$ of the large $N$ expansion of ${W_n}$'s enumerate discrete surfaces, called stuffed maps, whose building blocks are of particular topologies. The spectral curve ${\left( {\Sigma , \omega_{0,1} , \omega_{0,2}} \right)}$ of the model is investigated in detail. In particular, we derive an explicit expression for the fundamental symmetric bidifferential ${\omega_{0,2}}$ in terms of the formal parameters of the model.

Abstract:We extend the analysis of the Backgammon model to an ensemble with a fixed number of balls and a fluctuating number of boxes. In this ensemble the model exhibits a first order phase transition analogous to the one in higher dimensional simplicial gravity. The transition relies on a kinematic condensation and reflects a crisis of the integration measure which is probably a part of the more general problem with the measure for functional integration over higher (d>2) dimensional Riemannian structures.

Simplicial Lattice Study of the 2d Ising CFT

Abstract:I derive a formulation of the 2-dimensional critical Ising model on non-uniform simplicial lattices. Surprisingly, the derivation leads to a set of geometric constraints that a lattice must satisfy in order for the model to have a well-defined continuum limit. I perform Monte Carlo simulations of the critical Ising model on discretizations of several non-trivial manifolds including a twisted torus and a 2-sphere and I show that the simulations are in agreement with the 2d Ising CFT in the continuum limit. I discuss the inherent benefits of using non-uniform simplicial lattices to study quantum field theory and how the methods developed here can potentially be generalized for use with other theories.

Abstract:We study the structural stability of random coupled map lattice models of hyperbolic type under certain metrics. Furthermore, by describing the thermodynamic formalism of the underlying random spin lattice system, we prove the existence of equilibrium states for equi-Hölder continuous random functions on lattice models under the conditions of random weak interaction and translation invariance and present some partial results on the uniqueness of equilibrium states.

Abstract:This article is an overview of the use of so-called Euclidean Dynamical Triangulations (EDT) and Causal Dynamical Triangulations (CDT) as lattice regularizations of quantum gravity. The lattice regularizations have been very successful in the case of two-dimensional quantum gravity, where the lattice theories indeed provide regularizations of continuum well defined quantum gravity theories. In four-dimensional spacetime the Einstein-Hilbert action leads to a theory of gravity which is not renormalizable as a perturbative quantum theory around flat spacetime. It is discussed how lattice gravity in the form of EDT or CDT can be used to search for a non-perturbative UV fixed point of the lattice renormalization group in the spirit of asymptotic safety. In this way it might be possible to define a quantum theory of gravity also at lengthscales smaller than the Planck length.

Abstract:We present a Euclidean quantum gravity model in which random graphs dynamically self-assemble intodiscrete manifold structures. Concretely, we consider a statistical model driven by a discretisationof the Euclidean Einstein–Hilbert action; contrary to previous approaches based on simplicialcomplexes and Regge calculus our discretisation is based on the Ollivier curvature, a coarseanalogue of the manifold Ricci curvature defined for generic graphs. The Ollivier curvature isgenerally difficult to evaluate due to its definition in terms of optimal transport theory, but wepresent a new exact expression for the Ollivier curvature in a wide class of relevant graphs purelyin terms of the numbers of short cycles at an edge. This result should be of independent intrinsicinterest to network theorists. Abstract:We study in detail a one-dimensional lattice model of a continuum, conserved field (mass) that is transferred deterministically between neighbouring random sites. The model falls in a wider class of lattice models capturing the joint effect of random advection and diffusion and encompassing as specific cases, some models studied in the literature, like the Kang-Redner, Kipnis-Marchioro-Presutti, Takayasu-Taguchi, etc. The motivation for our setup comes from a straightforward interpretation as advection of particles in one-dimensional turbulence, but it is also related to a problem of synchronization of dynamical systems driven by common noise. For finite lattices, we study both the coalescence of an initially spread field (interpreted as roughening), and the statistical steady-state properties. We distinguish two main size-dependent regimes, depending on the strength of the diffusion term and on the lattice size. Using numerical simulations and mean-field approach, we study the statistics of the field. For weak diffusion, we unveil a characteristic hierarchical structure of the field. We also connect the model and the iterated function systems concept.

Functional Analysis and Its Applications

Abstract:We associate a noncommutative curve to a periodic, bipartite, planar dimer model with polygonal boundary. It determines the inverse Kasteleyn matrix and hence all correlations. It may be seen as a quantization of the limit shape construction of Kenyon and the author. We also discuss various directions in which this correspondence may be generalized.

Abstract:We study dissipative dynamics constructed by means of non-commutative Dirichlet forms for various lattice systems with multiparticle interactions associated to CCR algebras. We give a number of explicit examples of such models. Using an idea of quasi-invariance of a state, we show how one can construct unitary representations of various groups. Moreover in models with locally conserved quantities associated to an infinite lattice we show that there is no spectral gap and the corresponding dissipative dynamics decay to equilibrium polynomially in time.

Abstract:In this work we study the variational problem associated to dimer models, a class of models from integrable probability and statistical mechanics in dimension two which have been the focus of intense research efforts over the last decades. These models give rise to an infinite family of non-differentiable functionals on Lipschitz functions with gradient constraint, determined by solutions of the Dirichlet problem on compact convex polygons for a class of Monge-Ampère equations. We settle a number or outstanding open questions for this infinite class functionals. In particular we prove a complete classification of the regularity of minimizers, also known as height functions, for all dimer models for a natural class of polygonal (simply or multiply connected) domains much studied in numerical simulations and elsewhere. Our classification in particular implies that the Pokrovsky-Talapov law holds for all dimer models at a generic point on the frozen boundary and in addition shows a very strong local rigidity of dimer models which can be interpreted as a geometric universality result. Furthermore, we give a complete classification of the regularity of the associated free boundary, also known in the literature as frozen boundary or arctic curves and prove that they are all algebraic curves. The lack of differentiability of the functionals is intimately connected to the boundary behaviour of the solutions to the Monge-Ampère equations and we prove a complete classification for these, of independent interest.

Abstract:The notion of Laplacian of a graph can be generalized to simplicial complexes and hypergraphs, and contains information on the topology of these structures. Even for a graph, the consideration of associated simplicial complexes is interesting to understand its shape. Whereas the Laplacian of a graph has a simple probabilistic interpretation as the generator of a continuous time Markov chain on the graph, things are not so direct when considering simplicial complexes. We define here new Markov chains on simplicial complexes. For a given order~$k$, the state space is the set of $k$-cycles that are chains of $k$-simplexes with null boundary. This new framework is a natural generalization of the canonical Markov chains on graphs. We show that the generator of our Markov chain is the upper Laplacian defined in the context of algebraic topology for discrete structure. We establish several key properties of this new process: in particular, when the number of vertices is finite, the Markov chain is positive recurrent. This result is not trivial, since the cycles can loop over themselves an unbounded number of times. We study the diffusive limits when the simplicial complexes under scrutiny are a sequence of ever refining triangulations of the flat torus. Using the analogy between singular and Hodge homologies, we express this limit as valued in the set of currents. The proof of tightness and the identification of the limiting martingale problem make use of the flat norm and carefully controls of the error terms in the convergence of the generator. Uniqueness of the solution to the martingale problem is left open. An application to hole detection is carried.

On-lattice Vicsek model in confined geometries

Abstract:The Vicsek model (Vicsek et al. 1995) is a very popular minimalist model to study active matter with a number of applications to biological systems at different length scales. With its off-lattice implementation and periodic boundary conditions, it aims at the analysis of bulk behaviour of a limited number of particles. We introduce an efficient on-lattice implementation with finite particle volume and analyse its behaviour for three different geometries with reflective boundary conditions. For sufficiently fine lattices, the model behaviour does not differ between off-lattice and on-lattice implementation. The reflective boundary conditions introduce an alignment of the particles with the boundary for low levels of noise. Numerical sensitivity analysis of the swarming behaviour results in a detailed characterisation of the on-lattice Vicsek model for confined geometries with reflective boundary conditions. In a channel geometry, the boundary alignment causes swarms to move along the channel. In a box, the edges act as swarm traps and the trapping shows a discontinuous noise dependence. In a disk geometry, an ordered rotational state arises. This state is well described by a novel order parameter. Our works provides a foundation for future studies of Vicsek-like models with discretized space.
