Abstract:In this work, we present the concept for large low-background experiments in which an unusual gas mixture gas serves as a seamless, high-QE, near-100\%-coverage photodetector for scintillation or \cerenkov photons. We fill a large time projection chamber with a VUV scintillating gas, plus an unusually small admixture dopant gas with a low ionization threshhold (and a high ionization yield), akin to a highly-underquenched Penning mixture. Scintillation photons travel far from a primary ionization site before converting into photoionization electrons. Using standard TPC methods, we can separately count both the primary ionization electrons (which occur along a dense track) and the scintillation-ionization electrons (which will occur over a large spherical region) without the use of PMTs. The scheme is compatible with very large detectors, in both two-phase and single-phase high pressure configurations. We discuss how the drift-axis position of an event can be reconstructed, and under what constraints we can expect stable gas gain operations. We propose some detectors illustrating how this scheme---both in conventional two-phase geometries, as well as in pressurized space in solution-mined salt cavern---makes it possible to safely construct gas time projection chambers of previously-unreachable target masses, capable of studying dark matter, double beta decay, proton decay, and solar neutrinos; more speculative gas mixtures might extend the technique to reactor and geoneutrinos
Dual-phase xenon time projection chambers for rare-event searches

Abstract:In the past decade, dual-phase xenon time projection chambers (Xe-TPCs) have emerged as some of the most powerful detectors in the fields of astroparticle physics and rare-event searches. Developed primarily towards the direct detection of dark matter particles, experiments presently operating deep underground have reached target masses at the multi-tonne scale, energy thresholds around 1 keV and radioactivity-induced background rates similar to those from solar neutrinos. These unique properties, together with demonstrated stable operation over several years, allow for the exploration of new territory via high-sensitivity searches for a plethora of ultra-rare interactions. These include searches for particle dark matter, for second order weak decays, and the observation of astrophysical neutrinos. We first review some properties of xenon as a radiation detection medium and the operation principles of dual-phase Xe-TPCs together with their energy calibration and resolution. We then discuss the status of currently running experiments and of proposed next-generation projects, describing some of the technological challenges. We end by looking at their sensitivity to dark matter candidates, to second order weak decays and to solar and supernova neutrinos. Experiments based on dual-phase Xe-TPCs are difficult, and, like all good experiments, they are constantly pushed to their limits. Together with many other endeavours in astroparticle physics and cosmology they will continue to push at the borders of the unknown, hopefully to reveal profound new knowledge about our cosmos.

Abstract:Dual phase Xenon Time Projection Chambers (XeTPCs) are being used by several experiments as a promising technique for direct detection of dark matter. We report on the design and performance of a small 3-D sensitive dual phase XeTPC. The position resolution is 2 mm in the center of detector, limited by the hole size of the mesh at the proportional scintillation region. An energy resolution of 1.6%(σ/E) for 662 keV gamma rays is achieved in the very center of the detector by combining the ionization and scintillation signals at a drift field of 0.5 kV/cm. This represents the best energy resolution achieved among liquid xenon detectors to date. The energy resolution is only slightly dependent on the drift field. Better than 2% energy resolution (σ/E) for 662 keV gamma rays was achieved for drift fields between 100 V/cm and 2 kV/cm. If such a high position and energy resolution can be achieved in a large volume detector, the dual phase XeTPC will have potential applications in surveys of neutrinoless double-beta decay and in gamma ray imaging.

Abstract:Measuring the energy loss and mass of highly ionizing particles predicted by theories from beyond the Standard Model pose considerable challenges to conventional detection techniques. Such particles are predicted to experience energy loss to matter they pass through that exceeds the dynamic range specified for most readout chips, leading to saturation of the detectors' electronics. Consequently, achieving precise energy loss and mass measurements becomes unattainable. We present a new approach to detect such highly ionizing particles using time projection chambers that overcomes this limitation and provide a case study for triggering on magnetic monopoles.

Abstract:The largest direct dark matter search experiments to date employ dual-phase time projection chambers (TPCs) with liquid noble gas targets. These detect both the primary photons generated by particle interactions in the liquid target, as well as proportional secondary scintillation light created by the ionization electrons in a strong electric field in the gas phase between the liquid-gas interface and the anode. In this work, we describe the detection of charge signals in a small-scale single-phase liquid-xenon-only TPC, that features the well-established TPC geometry with light readout above and below a cylindrical target. In the single-phase TPC, the proportional scintillation light (S2) is generated in liquid xenon in close proximity to 10 μm diameter anode wires. The detector was characterized and the proportional scintillation process was studied using the 32.1 keV and 9.4 keV signals from 83m Kr decays. A charge gain factor g 2 of up to (1.9 ± 0.3) PE/electron was reached at an anode voltage 4.4 kV higher than the gate electrode 5 mm below it, corresponding to (29 ± 6) photons emitted per ionization electron. The duration of S2 signals is dominated by electron diffusion and approaches the xenon de-excitation timescale for very short electron drift times. The electron drift velocity and the longitudinal diffusion constant were measured at a drift field of 470 V/cm. The results agree with the literature and demonstrate that a single-phase TPC can be operated successfully.

Abstract:We report the design, construction, and initial commissioning results of a large high pressure gaseous Time Projection Chamber (TPC) with Micromegas modules for charge readout. The detector vessel has an inner volume of about 600 L and an active volume of 270 L. At 10 bar operating pressure, the active volume contains about 20 kg of xenon gas and can image charged particle tracks. Drift electrons are collected by the charge readout plane, which accommodates a tessellation of seven Micromegas modules. Each of the Micromegas covers a square of 20 cm by 20 cm. A new type of Microbulk Micromegas is chosen for this application due to its good gain uniformity and low radioactive contamination. Initial commissioning results with 1 Micromegas module running with 1 bar argon and isobutane gas mixture and 5 bar xenon and trimethylamine (TMA) gas mixture are reported. Abstract:Time Projection Chambers (TPCs) operated at high pressure have become a topic of interest for future long baseline neutrino experiments. Pressurized gas retains the low momentum threshold for particle detection of atmospheric TPCs, but offers a larger target mass for neutrino interactions at the same volume. Operation at high pressure poses several new challenges in safety aspects regarding overpressure and high voltage safety. The presented High Pressure Gas Monitoring Chamber (HPGMC) can be used to study the suitability of various drift gas mixtures up to 10 bar and a maximum field of $\sim$3000 V/cm . A flexible construction makes it possible to exchange parts of the inner detector and to test new technologies. In this work, the construction of a HPGMC and its commissioning using the P10 gas mixture ($90 \% \mathrm{Ar} + 10 \% \mathrm{CH}_4$) are presented.

Abstract:We present a systematic study of the time and band-resolved scintillation in xenon-based time projection chambers (TPCs), performed simultaneously for the primary (S1) and secondary (S2) components in a small, purity-controlled, setup. We explore a range of conditions of general academic interest, focusing on those of relevance to contemporary TPCs: pressure range 1–10 bar, pressure-reduced electric fields of 0–100 V/cm/bar in the drift region (S1) and up to the proportional scintillation regime in the multiplication region (S2), and wavelength bands 145–250/250–400/400–600 nm, for both and particles. Attention is paid to the possibility of non-conventional scintillation mechanisms such as the 3rd continuum emission, recombination light from -electrons at high pressure (for S1), emission from high-lying excited states and neutral bremsstrahlung (for S2). Time constants and, specially, scintillation yields have been obtained as a function of electric field and pressure, the latter aided by Geant4 simulations.

Abstract:Broadband noise on supercontinuum spectra generated in microstructure fiber is shown to lead to amplitude fluctuations as large as 50 % for certain input laser pulse parameters. We study this noise using both experimental measurements and numerical simulations with a generalized stochastic nonlinear Schroedinger equation, finding good quantitative agreement over a range of input pulse energies and chirp values. This noise is shown to arise from nonlinear amplification of two quantum noise inputs: the input pulse shot noise and the spontaneous Raman scattering down the fiber.

Abstract:Gaseous detectors have long been used by particle physics experiments at beamlines or standalone experiments. Recently, their low momentum threshold has made them interesting as active targets for long baseline neutrino experiments. To increase statistics, but retain a low momentum threshold, pressurized Time Projection Chambers have been proposed. The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment considers building one as part of their near detector complex. Gas Monitoring Chambers are mini TPCs that are designed to measure gas properties. Such a system with the capability of testing common and new drift gas mixtures can provide input to the design process of new high pressure TPCs. This work presents the construction of such a High Pressure Gas Monitoring Chamber capable of operation up to \unit[10]{bar} pressure and a maximum drift field close to \unit[1000]{V/cm}.

Abstract:In experiments searching for rare signals, background events from the detector itself are some of the major factors limiting search <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://sensitivity.Screening" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> for ultra-low radioactive detector materials is becoming ever more essential. We propose to develop a gaseous time projection chamber (TPC) with a Micromegas readout for radio screening. The TPC records three-dimensional trajectories of charged particles emitted from a flat sample placed in the active volume of the detector. The detector can distinguish the origin of an event and identify the particle types with information from trajectories, which significantly increases the screening sensitivity. For $\alpha$ particles from the sample surface, we observe that our proposed detector can reach a sensitivity higher than 100 $\mu$Bq$\cdot$m$^{-2}$ within two days.

Abstract:We measured the properties of a novel combination of two Gas Electron Multipliers with a Micromegas for use as amplification devices in high-rate gaseous time projection chambers. The goal of this design is to minimize the buildup of space charge in the drift volume of such detectors in order to eliminate the standard gating grid and its resultant dead time, while preserving good tracking and particle identification performance. We measured the positive ion back-flow and energy resolution at various element gains and electric fields, using a variety of gases, and additionally studied crosstalk effects and discharge rates. At a gain of 2000, this configuration achieves an ion back-flow below 0.4% and an energy resolution better than $\sigma/\text{E}=12\%$ for $^{55}$Fe X-rays.

Abstract:Abstract We have built and operated a crystalline/vapor xenon TPC, with the goal of improving searches for dark matter. The motivation for this instrument is the fact that beta decays from the radon decay chain to the ground state presently limit the state-of-the-art liquid/vapor xenon experiments. In contrast, a crystalline xenon target has the potential to exclude, or tag and reject radon-chain backgrounds. As a preamble to demonstrating such capabilities, the present article makes a first demonstration of the operation of a crystalline/vapor xenon TPC with electroluminescence (gas gain) for the electron signal readout. It also shows that the scintillation yield in crystalline xenon appears to be identical to that in liquid xenon, in contrast to previous results.

Abstract:Dual phase time projection chamber using liquid xenon as target material is one of most successful detectors for dark matter direct search, and has improved the sensitivities of searching for weakly interacting massive particles by almost five orders of magnitudes in past several decades. However, it still remains a great challenge for dual phase liquid xenon time projection chamber to be used as the detector in next-generation dark matter search experiments (~ 50 tonne sensitive mass), in terms of reaching sufficiently high field strength for drifting electrons, and sufficiently low background rate. Here we propose a single phase liquid xenon time projection chamber with detector geometry similar to a Geiger counter, as a potential detector technique for future dark matter search, which trades off field uniformity for less isolated charge signals. Preliminary field simulation and signal reconstruction study have shown that such single phase time projection chamber is technically feasible and can have sufficiently good signal reconstruction performance for dark matter direct search.

On the determination of the interaction time of GeV neutrinos in large argon gas TPCs

Abstract:Next-generation megawatt-scale neutrino beams open the way to studying neutrino-nucleus scattering resorting, for the first time, to gaseous targets. This could lead to deeper knowledge of neutrino cross sections in the energy region between hundreds of MeV and a few GeV, of interest for the upcoming generation of long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments. The challenge is, therefore, to accurately track and (especially) time the particles produced in neutrino interactions in large and seamless volumes down to few-MeV energies. We propose to accomplish this through an optically-read time projection chamber (TPC) filled with high-pressure argon and equipped with both tracking and timing functions. In this work, we present a detailed study of the time-tagging capabilities of such a device, based on end-to-end optical simulations that include the effect of photon propagation, photosensor response, dark-count rate and pulse reconstruction. We show that the neutrino interaction time could be reconstructed from the primary-scintillation signal with a precision in the range 1--2.5~ns ($\sigma$) for point-like deposits with energies down to 5~MeV, and well below 1~ns for minimum-ionizing particle tracks. A discussion on previous limitations towards such a detection technology, and how they can be realistically overcome in the near future thanks to recent developments in the field, is presented (particularly the strong scintillation yields recently reported for Ar/CF$_4$ mixtures). The performance presented in our analysis seems to be well within reach of next-generation neutrino-oscillation experiments through the instrumentation of the proposed TPC with conventional reflective materials and a SiPM carpet behind a transparent cathode.

Abstract:Systematic uncertainties in accelerator oscillation neutrino experiments arise mostly from nuclear models describing neutrino-nucleus interactions. To mitigate these uncertainties, we can study neutrino-nuclei interactions with detectors possessing enhanced hadron detection capabilities at energies below the nuclear Fermi level. Gaseous detectors not only lower the particle detection threshold but also enable the investigation of nuclear effects on various nuclei by allowing for changes in the gas composition. This approach provides valuable insights into the modelling of neutrino-nucleus interactions and significantly reduces associated uncertainties. Here, we discuss the design and first operation of a gaseous argon time projection chamber optically read. The detector operates at atmospheric pressure and features a single stage of electron amplification based on a thick GEM. Here, photons are produced with wavelengths in the vacuum ultraviolet regime. In an optical detector the primary constraint is the light yield. This study explores the possibility of increasing the light yield by applying a low electric field downstream of the ThGEM. In this region, called the electroluminescence gap, electrons propagate and excite the argon atoms, leading to the subsequent emission of photons. This process occurs without any further electron amplification, and it is demonstrated that the total light yield increases up to three times by applying moderate electric fields of the order of 3~kV/cm. Finally, an indirect method is discussed for determining the photon yield per charge gain of a ThGEM, giving a value of 18.3 photons detected per secondary electron.

Abstract:The need for precise characterization of dual-phase xenon detectors has grown as the technology has matured into a state of high efficacy for rare event searches. The Michigan Xenon detector was constructed to study the microphysics of particle interactions in liquid xenon across a large energy range in an effort to probe aspects of radiation detection in liquid xenon. We report the design and performance of a small 3D position sensitive dual-phase liquid xenon time projection chamber with high light yield (Ly122=15.2 pe/keV at zero field), long electron lifetime (τ > 200 μs), and excellent energy resolution (σ/E = 1% for 1,333 keV gamma rays in a drift field of 200 V/cm). Liquid xenon time projection chambers with such high energy resolution may find applications not only in dark matter direct detection searches, but also in neutrinoless double beta decay experiments and other applications.
