Abstract:Harvesting biobased silane coupling agent to enhance the connection between fillers and epoxy matrix is vital to achieve sustainable and environmentally friendly products. In this work, a eugenol based epoxy silane-coupling agent with high purity was prepared and used for the surface modification of nano-sized silica particles. The surface structure composition and physical properties of the modified nano-SiO2 were characterized through nuclear magnetic resonance, Fourier transferred infrared spectrometer, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and thermal gravimetric analyzer. An epoxy nanocomposite was subsequently prepared by incorporating the resulting modified nano-SiO2 as an enhancing filler. The nanocomposites glass transition temperature, the morphology of fracture surface, dynamic mechanical properties, and thermostability were investigated. Results showed that the eugenol epoxy silane-coupling agent bearing a long chain structure of benzene ring in the molecular structure could improve the compatibility of silica fillers with epoxy resin and contribute to a better dispersion state in the matrix, thus enhancing the overall performance of epoxy-cured products.
Improving Insulation Properties of Epoxy Filled with Surface Fluorinated Polystyrene Nanospheres

Abstract:Epoxy resin nanocomposites are widely used in the field of electrical insulation packaging. It is of great significance to regulate the dielectric and insulation properties of composite materials by introducing nano-filler to meet special application requirements. This work proposes a chemical copolymerization method, fluorinated polystyrene nanospheres are synthesized through an addition reaction as filler, and finally the epoxy nanocomposites are prepared. The polystyrene nanospheres have a uniform size and good compatibility with the epoxy resin. The introducing of nanospheres reduces the dielectric constant of the epoxy resin composite material and increases the breakdown strength simultaneously. Although the dielectric loss increases, the composites' imaginary part remains below 0.04 within 1 MHz frequency. In particular, the fluorinated polystyrene/epoxy composite with a mass fraction of 2% exhibits a decrease in dielectric constant and DC conductivity, while the AC breakdown strength and DC breakdown strength increase by 12.6% and 6%, respectively. The results of the pulse electro-acoustic method indicate that the charge injection of the epoxy resin filled with non-fluorinated polystyrene nanospheres is evident, while the introduction of fluorinated nanospheres significantly reduces the charge injection level. Calculations based on the depolarization process reveal that the introduction of fillers leads to an increase in trap density and depth of energy levels in the composites. Notably, the epoxy resin filled with fluorinated fillers has the deepest trap levels, providing an explanation for the improved insulation breakdown performance. The research can provide guidance for regulating dielectric properties of epoxy composites and material synthesis for the application of electrical insulation packaging.
Study on synthesis and stability of self-stratifying epoxy–acrylate composite emulsion

Abstract:Self-stratifying epoxy-acrylate composite emulsions were synthesized by core-shell emulsion polymerization using reactive emulsifiers.The structure and size of emulsion particles were characterized by transmission electron microscope and laser diffraction particle size analyzer.The cured latex films were characterized by attenuated total reflectance infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy.The stability of emulsions,as well as the pencil hardness and water resistance of their cured films were tested.A most stable emulsion containing epoxy resin as much as 40.00wt.% was obtained when the amount (with respect to the solid content of emulsion) was 7.00wt.% for emulsifier,0.36wt.% for stabilizer (hydroxypropyl methylcellulose),and 6.00-8.00wt.% for methacrylic acid (as functional monomer).Its cured film presents a stratified structure (acrylate resin on top,epoxy resin at the bottom,and the mixture of them in the middle) and is good at pencil hardness and water resistance.
Improving Interfacial Compatibility by a Micro–nano Synergetic Structure for High‐performance Epoxy Composites

Abstract:A multiscale functional filler of micro-nano synergetic structure was successfully prepared via in-situ growth of silica (SiO2) on biomimetic dopamine modified carbon fiber (CF) surface. The CF-SiO2 hybrid as a reinforcement possessed lubricating and reinforcing effect to enhance tribological performance, thermal stability and thermomechanical property of epoxy (EP) composites. The micro-nano synergetic structure was of great importance for ameliorating the compatibility and interfacial adhesion between CF and EP matrix, which was conductive to transferring stress from matrix to fiber and alleviating stress concentration. It was concluded that the friction coefficient and wear rate of EP/CF-SiO2 were 0.382 and 1.12 x 10(-5) mm(3)/N center dot m, that is, a decline of 58% and 2.5 times, respectively, compared to EP/CF. The CF-SiO2 hybrid exhibited excellent friction-reducing and anti-wear performance.

Abstract:Reverse water/oil (w/o) microemulsions composed of epoxy resin (EP) (the oil phase) and nonionic surfactant and ammonia aqueous solutions (the water phase) were used in the synthesis of SiO2/EP nanocomposites. The stability of reverse microemulsion was evaluated by measuring water solubilization of the microemulsion. Effects of surfactant type and content, ammonia concentration and temperature on the water solubilization were systematically investigated. Higher water solubilization capacity was obtained by nonionic surfactant TX-100 compared with other two surfactants, Span-80 and Tween-80. Ammonia concentration of 5 wt% and preparation temperature at 35 degrees C were favorable for forming a stable microemulsion and enabling the subsequent hydrolysis and condensation reaction of inorganic precursor tetraethoxysilane (TEOS). SiO2/ epoxy nanocomposites were prepared via in situ polymerization of TEOS within the nanoscale reverse microemulsion water pool. FTIR, SEM, and universal testing machine were used to characterize the structural and mechanical properties of the composite. The results revealed that the optimal mechanical properties were obtained at 3 wt% TEOS content. Compared with neat epoxy resin, the tensile and flexural strength of the composite were 40% and 12% higher, respectively. The formation of the silica structure in the hybrid was investigated with FTIR. Environmentally friendly water-soluble epoxy emulsions nano sphere improved the interfacial performance of high modulus carbon fiber reinforced epoxy composites based on robust van der Waals force

Abstract:High modulus carbon fibers (CFs) are widely desirable in aerospace, robotics, etc. However, their high degree of graphite microcrystalline structure leads to poor interfacial properties with host matrices, deteriorating the mechanical properties of carbon fiber reinforced polymer composites (CFRPs). Here, to improve interfacial properties of CFRPs, we present to construct a uniform and continuous active sizing nanolayer on the surface of CFs via synthetic water-based epoxy (WEP) emulsion nanospheres with strong van der Waals force. The WEP emulsions were prepared by introducing polar polyethylene glycols into epoxy resin chain. The modified CFRPs showed robust interfacial properties, improving by 25% over the untreated counterparts. Moreover, the proposed method can retain monofilament tensile strength of fibers and protect CFs from being destroyed during processing at industrial scales. This work opens an avenue toward the development of materials with superior interfacial performance for various inert high modulus fibers.

Abstract:As electronic devices move toward miniaturization and high-degree integration, it becomes imperative to use nano-sized silica as a reinforcing filler for epoxy resin in modern electronics packaging industries. However, the use of silica nanoparticles (SNPs) brings about new challenges in filler dispersion and in the balance between the rheology and thermal mechanical performance of epoxy nanocomposites. This study presents a novel strategy aiming to address the above challenges by interface engineering with amino-rich branched polyethyleneimine (PEI) polymer molecules through a facile self-assembly process. This not only enables a considerable decrease (by 79.7%) in viscosity accompanied by a significant improvement in viscosity stability (only 2.7 times increase after 24 h) but also leads to a further CTE reduction of 4.8 ppm/°C (equivalent to the effects of around 10 wt% SNPs) relative to the SNPs. This work offers a new direction and efficient approach to develop high-performance epoxy composites for electrical packaging applications as well as provides some fresh insights into the interface-property relationships.

Abstract:The molecular weight of self-emulsifying amphiphilic epoxy sizing emulsions has a big effect on the carbon fibres and interfacial properties of their composites. Novel amphiphilic epoxy sizing emulsions with four different molecular weights (7500, 11,000, 15,000 and 17,000) were successfully prepared by a self-emulsifying method and applied to improve interfacial bonding between carbon fibres (CFs) and an epoxy resin (EP). The effect of molecular weight on the quality of emulsions, the sized CFs and the interfacial properties of the CF/EP composite system were studied. The results reveal that these novel sizing emulsions exhibited strong emulsifying ability and high processability. The most favourable wettability and adequate CF surface free energy were obtained by the emulsion with a molecular weight of 7500. Compared with unsized CFs, the monofilament fibre tensile performance was remarkably improved when increasing the shape parameter from 5.08 to 7.20. The interfacial sheer strength (IFSS) of the CF/EP composite was greatly increased by 96% with the emulsion of 7500. The enhanced interfacial adhesion benefits were attributed mainly from the enhanced charge interaction between CFs and the sizing layer as well as the compatibility and the mechanical interlock between the sizing layer and the epoxy matrix.

Abstract:Emulsion of nanosized silicon oxide-polymerized acrylic ester with high solid content was prepared by soap-free emulsion polymerization, using silica sol as source of nanosized silicon oxide. The effects of the silica sol on the particle size, distribution of particle size, glass transition temperature, mechanical and applicable properties of emulsions were investigated. The results show that the particle size was reduced by joining the silicon sol, the latex particles were distributed evenly and the mechanical properties of the water-based coating had been also improved. The results of use test also show that the water-based coating is suitable for coatings of the walls and wood.

Abstract:Water-based epoxy resin emulsifier from epoxy resin E-51 and polyethylene glycol(PEG) in the presence of potassium persulfate as the initiator was synthesized.The effects of temperature,time,initiator dosage and dosage ratio of E-51 to PEG on the synthetic reaction were investigated,and the optimized reaction condition was established.The emulsifying performance of the emulsifier synthesized under the optimized condition was evaluated.The optimized synthetic conditions were determined as initiator dosage of 0.3%,equivalent ratio of epoxy to hydroxyl of 1.00∶1.05,temperature of 170 ℃ and reaction time of 4 h.Resultant synthesized emulsifier with a solid content of 18% possessed good emulsifying performance for epoxy resin E-51,and corresponding emulsion showed good stability and uniformly distributed grains with a size of about 1 μm.
Self-assembled nano-polymers modified water-based sizing agent for enhancing the dual interfacial properties of carbon fibre/epoxy resin composites

Abstract:The dual interface-enhanced sizing agents are prepared to simultaneously exhibit high surface roughness and high interfacial wettability through self-assembled nano-polymers. Five self-assembled nano-polymer modified water-based sizing agents (NPSAs) with various cross-linking structures are synthesized in this paper. It is demonstrated strong characteristics of homogeneous particle size in the 90–200 nm range and heat stability below 200 °C. NPSAs significantly improve the CF surface properties of both surface roughness and surface energy, with reached high values of 13.89 nm and 40.22 mN m-1. Notably, the interlaminar shear strength (ILSS), flexural strength, and fracture toughness (K IC ) of CF/ER composites sized by NPSAs are enhanced to 70%, 51%, and 120% compared with the unoptimized composite, respectively. The NPSA reinforcing mechanism, enhancing interfacial properties of CF/ER composites in the interfacial interlocking and adhesion ability, was clarified by the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE1). Additionally, NPSAs have the advantage of being applicable for simple one-pot synthesis methods, and secondly, no toxic solvents were used.

Abstract:The performance of resin-based composite materials is closely related to their interfacial properties. Due to the significant difference in properties between carbon fibers (CFs) and polymer matrices, the interfacial bonding is very poor, and enhancing interfacial performance becomes an important direction for the development of composite materials. In this paper, multiscale nanostructures were constructed on the carbon fiber surface using the mixtures of trifunctional polyetheramine modified graphene oxide (T403-GO) and epoxy (EP) to improve the interfacial performance of CF reinforced EP composites. Depending on the types of the epoxy sizing resins (TDE-85, E−51, and E−44) and the amount of T403-GO, carbon fibers with different surface morphologies and interfacial layers with different mechanical properties are obtained. Benefiting from the multiscale nanostructures, both the wettability between CF and the polymer matrix and the IFSS of the composites are improved. Meanwhile, the enhanced mechanisms of the interfacial properties are also revealed. For E−44 containing 0.15 wt% of T403-GO system, the IFSS was increased up 75.61 MPa, which was 1.47 times that of the original CF. It is evidenced that constructing multi-scale structures on the surface of CFs is an effective method to improve interfacial performance, and sizing resin plays a critical role in the interfacial structure and performance.

Abstract:A Pickering emulsion with good stability was prepared using nano-silica (SiO2) modified by hexamethyldisilazane (HMDS) as stabilizing agent, and then used to form a polyacrylate/nano-SiO2composite emulsion by emulsion polymerization. The polymerization conditions were optimized by evaluating the monomer conversion, size and distribution of particles, film formability, as well as other properties. The SiO2particles, emulsion and its cured film were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectrometer, thermogravimetric analyzer, scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope, and minimum film formation temperature (MFFT) tester. The composite emulsion has small particle size, good stability and a MFFT of 32 ℃. Its cured film has a 1-grade adhesion strength, pencil hardness up to 3H, and good resistance to water.

Abstract:While the incorporation of the inorganic fillers into polymers is envisioned to improve the properties of polymers, the organic–inorganic interface in the nanocomposite plays a prominent role in the modulation of the electrical, mechanical and thermal properties. Here, the epoxy chain-grafted silica nanoparticles were prepared and utilized as the fillers in epoxy matrix. The multiple physical properties such as the tensile strength, the elongation at break, the glass transition temperature, the dielectric strength of the nanocomposites with epoxy chain-grafted silica are simultaneously improved in comparison with those of the neat epoxy and the nanocomposites with unmodified silica. Moreover, substantial reductions in the water absorption ratio, dielectric loss and electric conductivity are obtained in the nanocomposites filled with epoxy-grafted silica even at relatively low filler loadings. These results verify the critical role of the chemically-bonded interface between organic and inorganic phases in determining the mechanical and dielectric strength of the polymer nanocomposites. The interaction zone models for the interface between nanoparticle and polymer matrix have been proposed to rationalize the experimental results.
Preparation of a nonionic waterborne epoxy resin emulsion and study on its anticorrosion property

Abstract:A nonionic epoxy emulsifier was synthesized with polyethylene glycol PEG-2000 and epoxy resin EP-51 under the catalysis of boron trifluoride diethyl etherate, and then blended with Span-60 to prepare a waterborne EP-20 epoxy resin-based emulsion via phase inversion process. The effects of the reactants’ proportions, catalyst dosage, temperature, and time for synthesizing the emulsifier on the particle size and stability of the emulsion obtained therewith were discussed. The suitable synthesis conditions were determined as follows: molar ratio of EP-51 to PEG-2000 1.0:1.5, mass fraction of catalyst 0.50%, reaction temperature 90-100 °C, and reaction time 3 h. The emulsion was further mixed with the fluorinated olefin polymer filler to form a coating by reaction with a waterborne amine curing agent. The effects of the ratio of epoxy resin to curing agent and filler amount on the coating’s hydrophobicity and corrosion resistance were studied . The results showed that the coating obtained with 5.0wt.% of filler at a ratio of 1.0:1.33 between epoxy value and amine value had a static water contact angle of 115.0° and good corrosion resistance.

Abstract:A simple and efficient strategy to stabilize complex emulsions with cellulose nanocrystal surfactants and fluorosurfactants is developed. By using the concentration or pH as the stimulus, reconfiguration of complex emulsions from encapsulated to Janus structures can be achieved. With complex emulsions serving as templates, particles of different shapes including hollow, semi‐spherical, and spherical can be synthesized on large scale. Using nanoparticle surfactants to stabilize the liquid‐liquid interface has attracted significant attention for developing all‐liquid constructs including emulsions and liquid devices. Here, an efficient strategy is demonstrated to stabilize complex emulsions that consist of multiphase droplets by using the co‐assembly between the cellulose nanocrystal and amine‐functionalized polystyrene. Cellulose nanocrystal surfactants (CNCSs) form and assembly in situ at the specified area of emulsion interface, showing a unique pH responsiveness due to their dynamic nature and allowing the reconfiguration of complex emulsion from encapsulated to Janus structures. Such complex emulsions can be further used as the templates to fabricate polymeric particles with hollow, semi‐spherical, and spherical shapes on large scale. These findings establish a promising platform for designing intelligent soft matter that can be used in microreactors, sensors, and anisotropic materials.

Abstract:The interfacial designing of carbon fiber (CF)/epoxy composites, as a well-accepted method used to obtain high-performance composites, has gained extensive attention. However, an improvement in interfacial adhesion is usually accompanied by a simultaneous decrease in toughness, which has become an obstacle to the performance enhancement of CF/epoxy composites. Herein, nanosized UiO-66-NH2 was proposed to yield on the CF surface through an in situ growth method for preparing high-performance CF/epoxy composites. The induced UiO-66-NH2 could significantly enhance the active groups, surface roughness and wettability on the fiber surface, which can be confirmed by XPS, FTIR, dynamic contact angle (DCA) and SEM. Moreover, the porous structure of UiO-66-NH2 enables the epoxy resin to pass through it, which could toughen the matrix by forming an interpenetrating network structure and reducing the density of resin crosslinking. Meanwhile, the size effect of UiO-66-NH2 could hinder the crack propagation and release the stress concentration. Benefiting from these interfacial strengthening and toughening effects, the interlaminar shear strength and impact strength increased by 44.2% and 27.6%, respectively, in comparison to those of untreated CF. This work proposes a simple and effective strategy for interfacial designing that could offer new ideas for solving the conflict between the strengthening and toughening and provide a practical basis for preparing high-performance resin matrix composites.

Abstract:Stable and low-particle size nanoemulsions were prepared using ultrasound homogenization. The conditions for preparing low-viscosity nanoemulsions were optimized using Response Surface Methodology (RSM) experimental design. The results showed that the addition of composite surfactants at 1%, an ultrasound amplitude of 35%, an ultrasound time of 4 min, and an ultrasound temperature of 20 °C yielded nanoemulsions with the best particle size and stability. The particle distribution was uniform, and the cold and heat stability were good. Compared with traditional emulsions, the low-viscosity nanoemulsion had better environmental stability, storage stability, and exhibited a phenomenon of self-reducing particle size at 40–55 °C, indicating that the emulsion had good performance under complex environmental conditions. The performance test of composite energetic materials using two types of emulsions as bonding systems showed that the low-viscosity nanoemulsion composite energetic material effectively reduced friction sensitivity, increased detonation velocity, and had better thermal stability and smaller propagation size. The results confirmed that the low-viscosity nanoemulsion perfectly met the requirements of bonding agents for composite energetic materials. This study provides a new approach for bonding agent systems of composite energetic materials and can serve as a new method to meet the special requirements of composite energetic materials.

Abstract:Interfacial properties were crucial in determining the mechanical properties of carbon fiber reinforced polymer composites (CFRPs). Applying appropriate sizing agents could effectively improve the interfacial properties of CFRPs. However, the influence of the pH of the sizing agent on the interfacial properties of CFRPs was still unclear. In this work, the above issues were elucidated by adjusting the pH of the diethanolamine-modified E51(E51@DEA) sizing agent to investigate its impact on the interfacial properties of CFRPs. The molecular weight and emulsion particle diameter of E51@DEA increased with increasing pH of the sizing agent, despite the presence of identical chemical functional groups. The best interfacial enhancement was observed for E51@DEA-pH 7. T700/E51@DEA-pH 7 exhibited ILSS and IFSS values of 102.24 and 113.45 MPa, respectively. This showed an increase of 76% and 37% when compared with T700. Additionally, the compressive and tensile strength of T700/E51@DEA-pH 7 also improved by approximately 13% and 30%, respectively. The suitable molecular chain length of the sizing agent and the high roughness of the surface of CFs were regarded as the contributing factors. This work further provided an effective and simple strategy for adjusting sizing agents to better improve the interfacial properties of CFRPs.

Abstract:<p>The epoxy resin was modified by hyperbranched structure of hydroxyl terminated to obtain waterborne epoxy resin for using as the carbon fiber (CF) sizing agent. By mixing method of waterborne epoxy resin and water, the waterborne epoxy sizing agent can be fabricated directly. In the sizing process, free of volatile organic solvents ensure the safety of operators and environment. Moreover, the introduction of tertiary amine group in hyperbranched structure will promote the reaction between epoxy and hydroxyl groups, and thus enhance the bonding strength between CF and epoxy resin. Results showed that the introduction of sizing agent does not sacrifice the CF single fiber tensile strength. The structure of epoxy resin retained in sizing agent is beneficial to the good wettability between CF and epoxy resin according to surface energy results. Interfacial shear strength value increases from 51.75 to 72.34 MPa, and interlaminar shear strength value increases from 80.32 to 90.34 MPa. These mechanical properties show that hyperbranched epoxy resin sizing agent with a large amount of hydroxyl groups can effectively improving the interface adhesion between CF and epoxy resin, showing a broad application prospect in composite materials field.</p>
