Abstract:This paper describes a facile hydrothermal and subsequent carbonization approach for the synthesis of Co3O4@SnO2@C core-shell nanorods. The as-synthesized Co3O4@SnO2@ C nanorods have been applied as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries, which exhibit improved cyclic performance and enhanced power capability. Both Co3O4 and SnO2 are electrochemically active materials, and the hybridization of Co3O4 and SnO2 into an integrated core-shell nanorod structure makes them an elegant synergistic effect when participating in the lithium-ion charge-discharge process. In addition, the carbon matrix has good volume buffering effect and high electronic conductivity, which may be responsible for the improved electrochemical performance.

Abstract:Anode materials play a critical role in enhancement of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) toward high energy density. In this work, the hollow Cu 2 O nanospheres with surface {111} and {110} active facets and intraluminal Cu 2 O nanoparticles are synthesized using a simple and low-cost one-step method, and used as the anode materials for LIBs to achieve high performance. Some advanced spectroscopic characterization and electrochemical methods are employed for fundamentally understanding the relationship between structure/morphology/composition and electrochemical performance. Using these materials, the as-fabricated anodes can deliver an excellent specific capacity of 914.4 Ah.kg −1 at a current density of 1 C (375 A.kg −1 ) after 390 cycles, and even at a large current density of 10 C, the capacity retention is still as high as 356.7 Ah.kg −1 . The enhancement in battery performance is attributed to the novel structure of Cu 2 O-HNs anode materials with high surface area, high surface active {111} and {110} facets and the intraluminal Cu 2 O nanoparticles. The outstanding electrochemical performance achieved in this work demonstrates a high potential of Cu 2 O-HNs to be applied as high-energy anode materials for practical lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Herein, we have designed and synthesized a novel type of nitrogen-doped carbon-supported CoO nanohybrids, i.e., nitrogen-doped carbon-wrapped porous single-crystalline CoO nanocubes (CoO@N-C nanocubes), by using Co3O4 nanocubes as precursors. Owing to its unique structural features, the as-synthesized CoO@N-C nanocubes demonstrate markedly enhanced anodic performance in terms of reversible capacity, cycling stability, and rate capability, facilitating its application as a high-capacity, long-life, and high-rate anode for advanced lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Herein, Cu nanowires are utilized as a self-sacrificial template to synthesize CuO hollow nanotubes (HTs) by a facile wet chemical method. The HTs with a diameter 549 ± 83.6 nm and rough surface, are constructed by well-distributed curved ultrathin nanosheets. When employed as an anode electrode in Li-ion batteries, the resulting CuO HTs exhibited a high specific capacity of 736 mAh g−1, superior rate performance and high cyclic performance. The excellent electrochemical performance of CuO HTs can be attributed to the high specific surface area, abundant unimpeded diffusion paths and high electron transfer rate due to the unique two-dimensional nanosheets structure and hollow structure. Moreover, the hollow structure provides enough space to accommodate volumetric changes and structural strain during the charge/discharge process, resulting in excellent cyclic stability. The current report presents a novel strategy to develop high-performance anodes for next-generation Li-ion batteries.

Hollow Porous SiO 2 Nanocubes with Enhanced Lithium Storage Properties

Abstract:The high theoretical capacity and low discharge potential of silicon have attracted much attention on Si-based anodes. Herein, hollow porous SiO2 nanocubes have been prepared via a two-step hard-template process and evaluated as electrode materials for lithium-ion batteries. The hollow porous SiO2 nanocubes exhibited a reversible capacity of 919 mAh/g over 30 cycles. The excellent property could be attributed to the unique hollow nanostructure with large volume interior and numerous crevices in the shell, which could accommodate the volume change and alleviate the structural strain during Li ions insertion and extraction, as well as allow rapid access of Li ions during charge/discharge cycling. It is found that the formation of irreversible or reversible lithium silicates in the anodes determines the capacity of a deep-cycle battery, fast transportation of Li ions in hollow porous SiO2 nanocubes is preferred to form Li2O and Si, contributing to the high reversible capacity. The hollow porous SiO2 nanocubes have great potential applications for Li-ion batteries due to their remarkable electrochemical performance and low cost.
Robust Hollow Bowl-like Α-Fe2o3 Nanostructures with Enhanced Electrochemical Lithium Storage Performance

Abstract:The design and synthesis of hollow-nanostructured transition metal oxide-based anodes is of great importance for long-term operation of lithium ion batteries (LIBs). Herein, a special hollow bowl-like a-Fe2O3 nanostructure is controllably synthesized through a facile hydrothermal technique and exhibits great electrochemical lithium storage performance when used as LIBs anode. Under a facile hydrothermal condition, a-Fe2O3 nanostructures evolve from solid pie-like structure to hollow bowl-like structure and finally a-Fe2O3 nanorings through the regulation of HPO4- derived from ionized Na3PO4.12H2O and Ostwald ripening process. The designed hollow bowl-like a-Fe2O3 nanostructure not only has the merits of hollow structure, which can accelerate the diffusion of lithium ions and electrons, but also shows great mechanical strength to disperse stress when compared to solid pie-like and ring-like a-Fe2O3 nanostructures, which would avoid collapse during charge/discharge process. As a result, the as-synthesized hollow bowl-like a-Fe2O3 nanostructure displays an initial reversible capacity of 1616 mAh g-1 at a current density of 1 A g-1, an excellent cycling performance with a reversible capacity of 1018 mAh g-1 after 500 cycles and an outstanding rate capability (68.1% capacity retention at current densities from 100 to 2000 mA g-1). This work provides not only a novel hollow bowl-like a-Fe2O3 nanostructure with high specific surface area and stable structure as potential electrode materials for energy storage, but also a facile self-templated strategy free of any surfactants and templates for hollow nanostructures. Controllable Synthesis of Copper Oxide/Carbon Core/Shell Nanowire Arrays and Their Application for Electrochemical Energy Storage

Abstract:Rational design/fabrication of integrated porous metal oxide arrays is critical for the construction of advanced electrochemical devices. Herein, we report self-supported CuO/C core/shell nanowire arrays prepared by the combination of electro-deposition and chemical vapor deposition methods. CuO/C nanowires with diameters of ~400 nm grow quasi-vertically to the substrates forming three-dimensional arrays architecture. A thin carbon shell is uniformly coated on the CuO nanowire cores. As an anode of lithium ion batteries, the resultant CuO/C nanowire arrays are demonstrated to have high specific capacity (672 mAh·g-1 at 0.2 C) and good cycle stability (425 mAh·g-1 at 1 C up to 150 cycles). The core/shell arrays structure plays positive roles in the enhancement of Li ion storage due to fast ion/electron transfer path, good strain accommodation and sufficient contact between electrolyte and active materials.
Multi-yolk-shell SnO2/Co3Sn2@C Nanocubes with High Initial Coulombic Efficiency and Oxygen Reutilization for Lithium Storage

Abstract:The challenging problems of SnO2 anode material for lithium ion batteries are the poor electronic conductivity and the low oxygen reutilization due to the irreversibility of Li2O generated in the initial discharge leading to a theoretical initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE) of only 52.4%. Different from these strategies, this work proposes a novel strategy to level up the oxygen reutilization in SnO2 by introducing Co3Sn2 nanoalloys which can release Co atoms to reversibly react with Li2O instead. According to this protocol, multi-yolk-shell SnO2/Co3Sn2@C nanocubes are designed and successfully prepared using hollow CoSn(OH)6 nanocubes as precursors followed a hydrothermal carbon coating and calcination treatment. The unique multi-yolk-shell nanostructure offers adequate breathing space for the volumetric deformation during long-term cycling. Moreover, the removal of Li2O allows a high electronic conductivity and resultant rate performance. As a result, the efficient reutilization of oxygen enables a high ICE of 71.7% and a reversible capacity of 1003 mA h g-1 after 200 cycles at 100 mA g-1. Cyclic voltammetry, cycling performance at different voltage windows, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirm the proposed mechanism. This strategy employing oxygen-poor metals or alloys provides a novel approach to enhance the oxygen reutilization in SnO2 for higher reversibility.

Abstract:Porous CuO/GO nanosheets have been synthesized via a facile and environmentally benign approach. In this synthetic system, Cu(OH)(2)/GO nanocomposites precursors were produced first for electrostatic interaction between GO and Cu2+ in a alkaline solution, and then porous CuO nanosheets were obtained from dehydration of the Cu(OH)(2) precursor. The structure and electrochemical performance of this porous CuO/GO nanosheet was fully characterized by various techniques, such as XRD, SEM, and TEM. Fortunately, as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries, the CuO/GO nanocomposites electrodes deliver relatively high reversible capacity, excellent rate capacity and cycle stability. These results suggest that the facile synthetic method of combining introduction of GO and preparation of porous nanostructures can realize excellent electrochemical properties, which is promising for next-generation high-performance lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Mixed transition metal oxides with high theoretical capacity show great potential to replace carbonaceous anode materials in lithium-ion batteries. However, they usually undergo large volume change during lithiation/delithiation, leading to poor rate and cycling performance. In this work, unique microsized assemblies constructed from porous CuCo2O4 nanosheets are synthesized by a facile method. Benefiting from the desired structural and compositional features, the as-synthesized CuCo2O4 nanosheet assemblies manifest excellent lithium storage performance in terms of high rate capability and long-term cycling stability. Specifically, the CuCo2O4 nanosheet assemblies can deliver a high specific capacity of 1104 mA h g(-1) at 2 A g(-1) after 600 cycles. Even at a high rate of 5 A g(-1), a high specific capacity of 656 mA h g(-1) can still be achieved.

Abstract:Hollow micro-/nanostructures of metal oxides have attracted tremendous research attention in energy storage due to their unique structural advantages. Although fabrication of spherical hollow architectures have been intensively reported, rational design and facile synthesis of anisotropic hollow structures are still quite challenging, especially for those complex mixed metal oxides with well-controlled interior structures. Herein, through facile citrate-assisted hydrothermal synthesis and subsequent controlled annealing, well-defined octahedral ZnCo2O4 solid, hollow and yolk-shell micro-/nanostructures were constructed for the first time. When used as anode materials for lithium ion batteries (LIBs), the hollow ZnCo2O4 octahedron exhibits the best lithium storage properties, delivering high discharge capacities of 880mAhg−1 over 160 cycles at 0.2Ag−1, and 650mAhg−1 over 300 cycles at 1Ag−1. Moreover, it shows a superior high-rate performance with 60% of the specific capacity maintained even at a high current density of 5Ag−1. These features render the hollow octahedral ZnCo2O4 micro-/nanostructure a promising anode for next generation LIBs.

Abstract:A novel CuO negative electrode with network-like architectures was fabricated on copper substrate by a simple solution-immersion step and subsequent heat treatment, which avoids the use of binder and conducting agent that necessary to the conventional electrode-preparation process. The as-prepared CuO electrodes exhibit not only high reversible capacity but also long cycling life, high rate capability in Li ion batteries. The result of this approach creates a new and attractive negative electrode with good electrochemical performance, which is simple, mild conditions, low cost, and easy control. It also opens a pathway for the application of other nanostructured materials of transition metal oxides in lithium ion batteries.

Abstract:Dumbbell and sphere-like CuO with porous three dimensional (3D) structures are synthesized via a simple chemical solution method and subsequent annealing treatment approach. The morphologies of the samples are obviously affected by the reaction temperature. Benefiting from the desired porous 3D structure, the dumbbell and sphere-like CuO are used as the anodes materials in LIBs, evidencing good rate capability (569 mAh g(-1) for dumbbell-like CuO and 467 mAh g(-1) for sphere-like CuO at 5 C) and high cycling stability (680 and 601 mAh g(-1) for dumbbell-like CuO and sphere-like CuO over 400 cycles at 2 C, respectively). Abstract:Heterostructured materials have great potential as cathodes for zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) because of their fast Zn2+ transport channels. Herein, hollow MoS2@C@Cu2S heterostructures are innovatively constructed by a template-engaged method. The carbon layer improves the electrical conductivity, provides a high in-situ growth area, and effectively retards volume expansion during the recycle process. MoS2 nanosheets are grown on the surfaces of hollow C@Cu2S nanocubes by the in situ template method, further expanding the specific surface area and exposing more active sites to enhance the electrical conductivity. As expected, the admirable reversible capacity of 197.2 mAh g-1 can be maintained after 1000 cycles with the coulombic efficiency of 91.1 %. Therefore, we firmly believe that this work points the way forward for high-performance materials design and energy storage systems.

Abstract:Hollow nanoporous carbon architectures (HNCs) present significant utilitarian value for a wide variety of applications. Facile and efficient preparation of HNCs has long been pursued but still remains challenging. Herein, we for the first time demonstrate that single-component metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) crystals, rather than the widely reported hybrid ones which necessitate tedious operations for preparation, could enable the facile and versatile syntheses of functional HNCs. By controlling the growth kinetics, the MOFs crystals (STU-1) are readily engineered into different shapes with designated styles of crystalline inhomogeneity. A subsequent one-step pyrolysis of these MOFs with intraparticle difference can induce a simultaneous self-hollowing and carbonization process, thereby producing various functional HNCs including yolk-shell polyhedrons, hollow microspheres, mesoporous architectures, and superstructures. Superior to the existing methods, this synthetic strategy relies only on the complex nature of single-component MOFs crystals without involving any other constituents and tedious operations, making it convenient, efficient, and easy to scale up. An ultra-stable Na-ion battery anode is demonstrated by the HNCs with extraordinary cyclability (93% capacity retention over 8000 cycles), highlighting a high level of functionality of the HNCs.

Abstract:Hollow α-Fe2O3 microcubes were fabricated by a facile hydrothermal method in an ethanol–water co-solvent system. The as-synthesized microcubes have a uniform size with an edge length of about 1.5 μm. Time and solvent proportion dependent experiments reveal that the ethanol adsorption and surface-protected etching mechanisms play key roles in the formation hollow cubic structures. Compared with their solid counterparts, hollow α-Fe2O3 microcubes show an enhanced electrochemical performance in terms of long-term cycling (458 mA h g−1 at a current density of 100 mA g−1 after 100 cycles) and high rate capability (859, 855, 688 and 460 mA h g−1 at current densities of 100, 200, 500 and 1000 mA g−1, respectively). These remarkable electrochemical properties can be attributed to the unique hollow microstructure, which could retain structural stability, relieve stress and increase reaction areas.

Abstract:Metal oxides, such as SnO2, Fe2O3, CoO, Co3O4, NiO, CuO and MnO2 etc., are promising anode materials for lithium-ion batteries due to their high capacity and safety characteristics. However, the commercial utility of metal oxide anodes has been hindered to date by their poor cycling performance. Recent study shows that metal oxides with hollow nano/microstructures exhibit fascinating performance as anode materials for Li ion batteries. In this review, we first describe the current commonly used synthetic methods to create metal oxide hollow structures, and for each method, we also comment on its advantages and shortages compared with other methods. According to some typical examples and the following theoretical analysis, we show the promising use of hollow metal oxides as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries. Finally, the challenges and future developments of metal oxide hollow structures are further discussed.
