Abstract:The current study analysed the relationships between socio-economic status, migration background, and non-cognitive factors and PISA reading and mathematics achievement. The results from multi-level analyses on Sweden's PISA survey from 2018 indicate that both mathematics achievement and reading achievement are affected by SES, migration background, reading abilities, growth mindset, and the ability to master the content. Between-school level differences are explained by reading motivation and the mother's educational level. Our findings stress the importance of both socio-demographic, socio-economic, and non-cognitive factors such as reading self-concept and growth mindset for both mathematics achievement and reading achievement.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to explore the relationships between socioeconomic status (SES), immigrant background, non - cognitive factors and PISA reading and math scores. Specifically, the research aims to answer the following two research questions: 1. **What are the relationships between SES, immigrant background, non - cognitive abilities and PISA reading and math scores?** - Through multilevel analysis methods and using the 2018 PISA survey data in Sweden, the research explored how these variables affect students' reading and math scores. 2. **Are these relationships similar between PISA reading and math scores?** - The research not only focused on the effects of SES, immigrant background and non - cognitive factors on reading and math scores, but also explored the similarities and differences of these effects among different subjects. ### Background and Motivation International large - scale assessments (ILSAs) such as PISA have an important impact on educational policies and public interests. Especially in Sweden, assessments such as PISA, PIRLS and TIMSS are considered important tools for measuring academic achievements. However, there are relatively few studies on the factors influencing Swedish students' PISA scores, and especially the studies using the 2018 PISA data are more limited. Therefore, this research aims to fill this research gap. ### Main Contributions 1. **Comprehensive consideration of multiple variables**: The research not only focused on SES and immigrant background, but also introduced non - cognitive factors (such as growth mindset, reading self - concept, reading motivation, etc.) to fully understand the factors influencing PISA scores. 2. **Multilevel analysis method**: Through the multilevel model, the research can identify the differences within and between schools, thus more accurately explaining the reasons for score variation. 3. **Cross - disciplinary analysis**: The research simultaneously analyzed reading and math scores in order to compare the magnitudes of the effects of various factors in different disciplines. ### Method The research used the 2018 PISA Sweden data, including student background variables, school background variables and ten possible values of PISA reading and math scores. The main independent variables included SES (the number of books at home, mother's education level), immigrant background, non - cognitive abilities (growth mindset, reading self - concept, reading motivation, the ability to master content, perseverance, self - efficacy) and gender. The research adopted a multilevel model for analysis to estimate the effects of various variables on PISA scores. ### Conclusion The research results show that factors such as SES, immigrant background, reading ability and growth mindset have significant effects on PISA reading and math scores. The differences between schools are mainly explained by reading motivation and mother's education level. These findings emphasize the importance of sociodemographic, socioeconomic and non - cognitive factors in influencing academic achievements. Through these analyses, the research provides a new perspective for understanding the factors influencing Swedish students' PISA scores and provides valuable references for educational policy makers.
