Abstract:Quantization of the electromagnetic field (called quantum electromagnetics here) has been a fascinating and important subject since its introduction by Dirac in 1927. However, this knowledge is often inaccessible to technologists such as engineers. This subject will be discussed in its simplest terms so that it can be easily understood by a larger community of researchers. To this end, a new way of motivating Hamiltonian mechanics is presented. Furthermore, a novel way of deriving the quantum equations of motion for electromagnetics and Maxwell's equations is presented.

Abstract:In this work, quantization of electromagnetic fields in a general anisotropic inhomogeneous media is considered. First, the classical Hamiltonian is derived. Once the Hamiltonian is derived, with it the classical equations of motion follow. Next, the fields are elevated to become quantum operators, for which conjugate pairs are endowed with commutators. Since as previously shown, such commutators induce functional derivatives, the quantum equations of motion can be easily derived. Next, the mode decomposition of the fields is demonstrated. Upon substitution into the classical Hamiltonian, each mode then behaves like a simple harmonic oscillator. These oscillators can then be elevated to become quantum harmonic oscillators. Both the traveling wave modes and the standing wave modes are discussed. Furthermore, the longitudinal modes are described. Finally, the case of impressed sources are considered, with the corresponding Hamiltonian and field quantization. The Green's functions for the linear system are presented. Finally, the quantum Maxwell's equations are derived. A short discussion on field-atom interaction is given.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper we consider introducing careful regularization at the quantization of Maxwell theory in the asymptotic null infinity. This allows systematic discussions of the commutators in various boundary conditions, and application of Dirac brackets accordingly in a controlled manner. This method is most useful when we consider asymptotic charges that are not localized at the boundary u → ±∞ like large gauge transformations. We show that our method reproduces the operator algebra in known cases, and it can be applied to other space-time symmetry charges such as the BMS transformations. We also obtain the asymptotic form of the U(1) charge following from the electromagnetic duality in an explicitly EM symmetric Schwarz-Sen type action. Using our regularization method, we demonstrate that the charge generates the expected transformation of a helicity operator. Our method promises applications in more generic theories.

Abstract:We construct a quantization of the moduli space of maximal globally hyperbolic Lorentzian metrics on with constant sectional curvature , for a punctured surface S . Although this moduli space is known to be symplectomorphic to the cotangent bundle of the Teichmüller space of S independently of the value of , we define geometrically natural classes of observables leading to -dependent quantizations. Using special coordinate systems, we first view as the set of points of a cluster -variety valued in the ring of generalized complex numbers . We then develop an -version of the quantum theory for cluster -varieties by establishing -versions of the quantum dilogarithm function. As a consequence, we obtain three families of projective unitary representations of the mapping class group of S . For these representations recover those of Fock and Goncharov, while for the representations are new.

Abstract:We quantize a relativistic massive complex spin-0 field and a relativistic massive spin-1/2 field on a space-time hyperboloid. We call this procedure point-form canonical quantization. Lorentz invariance of the hyperboloid implies that the 4 generators for translations become dynamic and interaction dependent, whereas the 6 generators for Lorentz transformations remain kinematic and interaction free. We expand the fields in terms of usual plane waves and prove the equivalence to equal-time quantization by representing the Poincare generators in a momentum basis. We formulate a generalized scattering theory for interacting fields by considering evolution of the system generated by the interaction dependent four-momentum operator. Finally we expand our generalized scattering operator in powers of the interaction and show its equivalence to the Dyson expansion of usual time-ordered perturbation theory.

Abstract:We present a Gupta-Bleuler quantization scheme for the electromagnetic field in time-dependent dielectric media. Starting from the Maxwell equations, a generalization of the Lorentz gauge condition adapted to time varying dielectrics is derived. Using this gauge, a Gupta-Bleuler approach to quantize all polarizations of the radiation field and the corresponding constraint condition are introduced. This new approach is different from the quantized electromagnetic field in vacuum in the sense that here the contributions of unphysical photons cannot be thoroughly eliminated, which further lead to a surface charge density. Finally, a discussion of potential experimental tests and possible implication is also made.

Abstract:We propose a general construction of quantum states for linear canonical quantum fields on a manifold, which encompasses and generalizes the ``standard'' procedures existing in textbooks. Our method provides pure and mixed states on the same footing. A large class of examples finds a simple and unified treatment in our approach. Applications discussed here include thermodynamical equilibrium states for Minkowski fields and quantum field theory in the Rindler's and in the open de Sitter universes. Our approach puts the above examples into perspective and unravels new possibilities for quantization. We call our generalization ``extended canonical quantization'' as it is suited to attack cases not directly covered by the standard canonical approach.

Abstract:We discuss the problem of canonical quantization of electromagnetic field in the Schwarzschild spacetime. It is shown that a consistent procedure of canonical quantization of the field can be carried out without taking into account the internal region of the black hole. We prove that there exists a unitary gauge, which can be viewed as a combination of the Coulomb and Poincare gauges and is compatible with the field equations. The solutions corresponding to the stationary one-particle states of the electromagnetic field are studied, the canonical commutation relations and the Hamiltonian of the quantized electromagnetic field are obtained.

Abstract:A 4-dimensional Lorentzian static space-time is equivalent to 3-dimensional Euclidean gravity coupled to a massless Klein-field. By canonically quantizing the coupling model in the framework of loop quantum gravity, we obtain a quantum theory which actually describes quantized static space-times. The Kinematical Hilbert space is the product of the Hilbert space of gravity with that of imaginary scalar fields. It turns out that the Hamiltonian constraint of the 2+1 model corresponds to a densely defined operator in the underlying Hilbert space, and hence it is finite without renormalization. As a new point of view, this quantized model might shed some light on a few physical problems concerning quantum gravity.

Abstract:We quantized the full Einstein equations in a globally hyperbolic spacetime $N=N^{n+1}$, $n\ge 3$, and found solutions of the resulting hyperbolic equation in a fiber bundle $E$ which can be expressed as a product of spatial eigenfunctions (eigendistributions) and temporal eigenfunctions. The spatial eigenfunctions form a basis in an appropriate Hilbert space while the temporal eigenfunctions are solutions to a second order ordinary differential equation in $\mathbb{R}_+$. In case $n\ge 17$ and provided the cosmological constant $\Lambda$ is negative the temporal eigenfunctions are eigenfunctions of a self-adjoint operator $\hat H_0$ such that the eigenvalues are countable and the eigenfunctions form an orthonormal basis of a Hilbert space.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to prove the existence of Hadamard states for the Maxwell equations on any globally hyperbolic spacetime. This will be achieved by introducing a new gauge fixing condition, the Cauchy radiation gauge, that will allow to suppress all the unphysical degrees of freedom. The key ingredient for achieving this gauge is a new Hodge decomposition for differential k-forms in Sobolev spaces on complete (possibly non-compact) Riemannian manifolds.

Abstract:We present a covariant quantization scheme for the so-called "partially massless" graviton field in de Sitter spacetime. Our approach is founded on the principles of the de Sitter group representation theory (in the sense given by Wigner), the Wightman-Gärding axioms for gauge-invariant fields (Gupta-Bleuler scheme), and the essential analyticity prerequisites in the complexified pseudo-Riemannian manifold. To implement the quantization process effectively, we adopt coordinate-independent (global) de Sitter plane waves. These plane waves, defined in the appropriate tube domains of complex de Sitter spacetime, serve as the de Sitter counterparts to the standard Minkowskian plane waves. By employing these analytical plane waves, we enable a spectral analysis of the corresponding two-point function that closely resembles the Fourier analysis typically employed in the flat Minkowskian case. Within this framework, we present the Wightman two-point function for the partially massless graviton field, which satisfies the essential criteria of locality, covariance, and normal analyticity. Furthermore, we provide insights into the underlying Hilbert space structure and the corresponding unsmeared field operator. A direct consequence of this quantization construction confirms the widely accepted notion of light-cone propagation for the de Sitter partially massless graviton field.

A Canonical Quantization of Poisson Manifolds: a 2-Groupoid Scheme

Abstract:We canonically quantize a Poisson manifold to a Lie 2-groupoid, complete with a quantization map, and show that it relates geometric and deformation quantization: the perturbative expansion in $\hbar$ of the (formal) convolution of two quantized functions yields Kontsevich's star product. Meanwhile, we can push forward this quantization map (by integrating over homotopies of paths) to obtain a quantization map in traditional geometric quantization. This gives a polarization-free, path integral definition of the quantization map, which does not have a prior prescription for Poisson manifolds and which only has a partial prescription for symplectic manifolds. We show that in conventional quantum mechanics our operators are defined on the entire prequantum Hilbert space and that they all preserve polarized sections, contrary to the Kostant-Souriau approach.

Abstract:We present an SO(2,4)-covariant quantization of the free electromagnetic field in conformally flat spaces (CFS). A CFS is realized in a six-dimensional space as an intersection of the null cone with a given surface. The smooth move of the latter is equivalent to perform a Weyl rescaling. This allows to transport the SO(2,4)-invariant quantum structure of the Maxwell field from Minkowski space to any CFS. Calculations are simplified and the CFS Wightman two-point functions are given in terms of their Minkowskian counterparts. The difficulty due to gauge freedom is surpassed by introducing two auxiliary fields and using the Gupta-Bleuler quantization scheme. The quantum structure is given by a vacuum state and creators/annihilators acting on some Hilbert space. In practice, only the Hilbert space changes under Weyl rescalings. Also the quantum SO(2,4)-invariant free Maxwell field does not distinguish between two CFSs.

Quantum fields on projective geometries

Abstract:Considering homogeneous four-dimensional space-time geometries within real projective geometry provides a mathematically well-defined framework to discuss their deformations and limits without the appearance of coordinate singularities. On Lie algebra level the related conjugacy limits act isomorphically to concatenations of contractions. We axiomatically introduce projective quantum fields on homogeneous space-time geometries, based on correspondingly generalized unitary transformation behavior and projectivization of the field operators. Projective correlators and their expectation values remain well-defined in all geometry limits, which includes their ultraviolet and infrared limits. They can degenerate with support on space-time boundaries and other lower-dimensional space-time subspaces. We explore fermionic and bosonic superselection sectors as well as the irreducibility of projective quantum fields. Dirac fermions appear, which obey spin-statistics as composite quantum fields. The framework systematically formalizes and generalizes the ambient space techniques regularly employed in conformal field theory.

Exploring Grassmann manifolds in topological systems via quantum distance

Abstract:Quantum states defined over a parameter space form a Grassmann manifold. To capture the geometry of the associated gauge structure, gauge-invariant quantities are essential. We employ the projector of a multilevel system to quantify the quantum distance between states. Using the multidimensional scaling method, we transform the quantum distance into a reconstructed manifold embedded in Euclidean space. This approach is demonstrated with examples of topological systems, showcasing their topological features within these manifolds. Our method provides a comprehensive view of the manifold, rather than focusing on local properties.

Abstract:To a complex symplectic manifold X we associate a canonical quantization algebroid. Our construction is similar to that of Polesello-Schapira's deformation-quantization algebroid, but the deformation parameter is no longer central. If X is compact, the triangulated category of regular holonomic quantization modules is a linear complex Calabi-Yau category of dimension 1 + dim X.
