Abstract:The aim of this paper is to prove the existence of Hadamard states for the Maxwell equations on any globally hyperbolic spacetime. This will be achieved by introducing a new gauge fixing condition, the Cauchy radiation gauge, that will allow to suppress all the unphysical degrees of freedom. The key ingredient for achieving this gauge is a new Hodge decomposition for differential k-forms in Sobolev spaces on complete (possibly non-compact) Riemannian manifolds.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper aims to prove the existence of Hadamard states of Maxwell equations on any globally hyperbolic spacetime. To achieve this goal, the author introduces a new gauge condition - Cauchy radiation gauge, which can eliminate all non - physical degrees of freedom. The key to implementing this gauge lies in a new Hodge decomposition of differential k - forms on complete (possibly non - compact) Riemannian manifolds. ### Main problems The main problems that the paper attempts to solve are: 1. **Existence of Hadamard states**: On any globally hyperbolic spacetime, do Hadamard states of Maxwell equations exist? 2. **Choice of gauge condition**: How to choose an appropriate gauge condition to eliminate non - physical degrees of freedom in Maxwell theory and ensure the existence of Hadamard states? ### Solutions 1. **Cauchy radiation gauge**: The author introduces the Cauchy radiation gauge, which requires: - \(\delta A = 0\) - \(A_0|_\Sigma = (\nabla_n A)_0|_\Sigma = 0\) where \(A_0 = (\partial_t \lrcorner A)\), and \(\nabla_n A\) represents the covariant derivative along the normal vector \(n\). 2. **Hodge decomposition**: To implement the Cauchy radiation gauge, the author generalizes Hodge decomposition to Sobolev spaces on non - compact complete Riemannian manifolds. Specifically, for a complete Riemannian manifold \((\Sigma, h)\), the Sobolev space \(H^s_k(\Sigma)\) is defined, and the following Hodge decomposition is proved: \[ \Omega^k_s(\Sigma) \sim \Omega^k_{s,d}(\Sigma) \oplus \Omega^k_{s,\delta}(\Sigma) \oplus \ker(\Delta_k|_{\Omega^k_s}) \] where: - \(\Omega^k_{s,d}(\Sigma)\) is the space of closed forms. - \(\Omega^k_{s,\delta}(\Sigma)\) is the space of co - closed forms. - \(\ker(\Delta_k|_{\Omega^k_s})\) is the space of harmonic forms. 3. **Solution of Poisson equations**: To prove that the Cauchy radiation gauge can always be implemented, the author needs to solve Poisson equations on complete Riemannian manifolds. Through Hodge decomposition, the author proves this. ### Main results 1. **Existence of Hadamard states**: The paper proves that on any globally hyperbolic spacetime, there exist Hadamard states of Maxwell equations. 2. **Generalization of Hodge decomposition**: The author successfully generalizes Hodge decomposition to Sobolev spaces on non - compact complete Riemannian manifolds, which is a key step in implementing the Cauchy radiation gauge. 3. **Implementation of Cauchy radiation gauge**: Through the above methods, the author proves that the Cauchy radiation gauge can always be implemented, thus ensuring the existence of Hadamard states. ### Conclusion By introducing the Cauchy radiation gauge and generalizing Hodge decomposition, this paper successfully solves the problem of the existence of Hadamard states of Maxwell equations on any globally hyperbolic spacetime. This result provides an important theoretical basis for the study of quantum field theory on curved spacetimes.
