Abstract:Nanoporous pure silica zeolites are increasingly used in gas separation technologies. One of the potential applications is the selective removal of the chemically aggressive hydrogen sulphide from industrial gas mixtures. To find further pure silica zeolite candidates (in addition to existing zeolites) that have the desirable adsorption properties with hydrogen sulphide-methane gas mixtures, thousands of hypothetical framework structures from two variants of the PCOD database were studied. A rapid screening of the pore properties and the feasibility of the frameworks (based on calculating synthesizability criteria) was executed by the PoreBlazer software and by an in-house code, respectively. Mixture adsorption data for the selected frameworks were predicted with classical atomistic simulations, using accurate all-atom force fields, to identify pore properties/structural details distinctive in terms of hydrogen sulphide removal performance. To screen the frameworks for further study, a sequence of suitable criteria for the obtained PoreBlazer parameters were defined, including upper and lower limits for the pore limiting diameter and the largest cavity diameter. It was found that the ratio of the convex Si–O–Si angles for the wall atoms of the framework pores tends to be higher for higher selectivity zeolite structures and can play as a supplementary discriminating parameter. In the two large databases, more than 20 frameworks were detected with very promising selectivities.
