Abstract:Shock wave/boundary layer interactions occur in a wide range of supersonic internal and external flows, and often these interactions are associated with turbulent boundary layer separation. The resulting separated flow is associated with large-scale, low-frequency unsteadiness whose cause has been the subject of much attention and debate. In particular, some researchers have concluded that the source of low-frequency motions is in the upstream boundary layer, whereas others have argued for a downstream instability as the driving mechanism. Owing to substantial recent activity, we are close to developing a comprehensive understanding, albeit only in simplified flow configurations. A plausible model is that the interaction responds as a dynamical system that is forced by external disturbances. The low-frequency dynamics seem to be adequately described by a recently proposed shear layer entrainment-recharge mechanism. Upstream boundary layer fluctuations seem to be an important source of disturbances, but the evidence suggests that their impact is reduced with increasing size of the separated flow.

Abstract:The shock wave–turbulent boundary layer interaction over a compression corner is studied using global stability analysis (GSA) and resolvent analysis based on a separation of scales between the low-frequency, large-scale motions and the turbulent fluctuations. The GSA identifies a leading stationary mode, which becomes globally unstable as the ramp angle is beyond a critical value. For globally stable flows, the resolvent analysis captures two-dimensional and three-dimensional local maxima in optimal gain, both of which are due to modal resonance between the forcing and the leading global mode. Notably, the frequency-premultiplied optimal gain associated with two-dimensional disturbances peaks at a low frequency. For different interaction strengths, the peak frequencies collapse onto a universal value of 0.015 when non-dimensionalized using the length of the separation region and the free-stream velocity. A numerical simulation perturbed with the corresponding optimal forcing reveals that the response is in the form of a back-and-forth shock motion.
Interaction of a Backward-Facing Step and Crossflow Instabilities in Boundary-Layer Transition

Abstract:A swept flat plate model with an imposed pressure gradient was experimentally investigated in a low-speed flow to determine the effect of a backward-facing step on transition in a stationary crossflow-dominated flow. Detailed hotwire measurements of boundary-layer flow were performed to investigate the upstream shift in transition due to a step height of 49% of the local unperturbed boundary-layer thickness. Increasing the initial stationary crossflow amplitude caused an upstream movement of the transition front for the backward-facing step case. The step caused a local increase in the growth of the stationary crossflow instabilities, but the stationary crossflow amplitude at transition was sufficiently low (<0.04Ue ) so that stationary crossflow was not solely responsible for transition. The unsteady velocity spectra downstream of the step were rich with unsteady disturbances in the 80- to 1500-Hz range. Three distinct families of disturbances were identified based on phase speed and wave angle, namely, a highly oblique disturbance (possibly traveling-crossflow-like), a Tollmien-Schlichting-wave-like disturbance, and a shear-layer instability. The stationary crossflow disturbances caused a modulation of the unsteady disturbances, resulting in spatially concentrated peaks in unsteady disturbance amplitude. This modulation of the unsteady disturbances is believed to be the reason for the upstream movement of the transition front with increasing stationary crossflow amplitude.
On the mean structure and unsteadiness of dual shock wave–turbulent boundary layer interactions

Abstract:Supersonic internal flows often exhibit multiple reflected shocks within a limited distance. These shocks can interact with each other in a complex manner due to the characteristics of the shock wave–turbulent boundary layer interaction (STBLI), including flow distortion and the relaxing boundary layer. This study aims to characterise this type of interaction and to clarify its fluid physics. A separated STBLI zone was established either upstream or downstream, and another weaker STBLI was established in the opposing position to serve as a perturbation. Time-resolved measurements were employed to characterise the mean separation and unsteadiness as the two regions approached each other, as well as their relationship. The experimental results indicated that the STBLI could affect the separation and reattachment of the other STBLI through either the decelerated or relaxing boundary layer. Despite a small deflection angle, the incident shock can amplify the low-frequency oscillations in the downstream STBLI region. Additionally, the interaction in the downstream region can be influenced by both low- and high-frequency oscillations associated with the upstream STBLI through a relaxing boundary layer. Despite the limited correlation observed between the low-frequency fluctuations in the downstream region and the boundary layer flow not far upstream, there still exists some degree of correlation between the low-frequency shock motions even when they are widely separated. Both the 'upstream mechanism' and 'downstream mechanism' have been observed, and the significance of low-frequency dynamics in the separated flow, relative to that of the upstream flow, is closely associated with interaction intensity.

Abstract:Interactions between turbulent boundary layer and single-incident or dual-incident shock waves are commonly observed in supersonic inlets. To provide novel insights into the unsteadiness of these interactions, six incident shock wave/turbulent boundary layer interactions (ISWTBLIs), including both single-ISWTBLIs and dual-ISWTBLIs, are experimentally investigated using dynamic wall-pressure measurements at Mach 2.73 flow conditions. Through spectral analysis and correlation analysis, the unsteadiness characteristics of single-ISWTBLIs and dual-ISWTBLIs are comparatively examined, revealing significant influences of shock-wave strength and shock-wave distance on low-frequency unsteadiness. Specifically, both regions near the separation and reattachment points exhibit distinct low-frequency unsteadiness in single-ISWTBLIs and dual-ISWTBLIs with relatively strong separations. An increase in the deflection angle from 10° to 12° in single-ISWTBLIs extends the streamwise separation length, while causing a dramatic decrease in both characteristic frequency and normalized characteristic frequency (Strouhal number) of low-frequency unsteadiness. However, for dual-ISWTBLIs, as the shock-wave distance increases, there is an initial increase followed by a subsequent decrease in the separation length accompanied by a continuously increasing characteristic frequency, thus indicating a different relationship between separation length and characteristic frequency of unsteadiness in dual-ISWTBLIs in comparison with that observed in single-ISWTBLIs. Moreover, correlation analysis revealed that the pressure signals in the reattachment region are of strong negative correlation with those near the separation-shock foot, and the correlation increases with increasing shock-wave strength in single-ISWTBLIs and decreasing shock-wave distance in dual-ISWTBLIs.

Abstract:We consider the direct numerical simulation of the flow over a forward-facing step protruding in a turbulent boundary layer. Proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) is applied to the velocity field in different regions using Fourier modes in the spanwise direction. The upstream flow is characterized by a structure with a spanwise modulation of the order of the step height, the origin of which is consistent with a centrifugal instability. The structure is associated with ejections over the step of low-speed fluid from the upstream recirculation, and organized into streaks through the action of strong spanwise motions along the step face. The spanwise-averaged instantaneous momentum deficit created by the ejections is directly related to the maximal shear rate at the edge of the step, and is well correlated with the dynamics of the downstream recirculation. The most energetic patterns consist of three-dimensional motions with a large spanwise wavelength located in the shear layer developing at the edge of the step, as well as two-dimensional fluctuations downstream of the reattachment. A linear model based on the interaction of the mean flow with the dominant POD modes is able to recover the main frequencies of the fluctuations at these wavenumbers. Including the time variations of the ejections into the model yields temporal spectra that resemble qualitatively those computed from the simulation. The results suggest that the global dynamics of the flow are at least partly driven by linear mechanisms and depend on the characteristic structure identified in the upstream region close to the step.

Abstract:The spatio-temporal scales, as well as a comprehensive self-sustained mechanism of the reattachment unsteadiness in shock wave/boundary layer interaction, are investigated in this study. Direct numerical simulations reveal that the reattachment unsteadiness of a Mach 7.7 laminar inflow causes over variation in wall friction and up to fluctuation in heat flux at the reattachment of the separation bubble. A statistical approach, based on the local reattachment upstream movement, is proposed to identify the spanwise and temporal scales of reattachment unsteadiness. It is found that two different types, i.e. self-induced and random processes, dominate different regions of reattachment. A self-sustained mechanism is proposed to comprehend the reattachment unsteadiness in the self-induced region. The intrinsic instability of the separation bubble transports vorticity downstream, resulting in an inhomogeneous reattachment line, which gives rise to baroclinic production of quasi-streamwise vortices. The pairing of these vortices initiates high-speed streaks and shifts the reattachment line upstream. Ultimately, viscosity dissipates the vortices, triggering instability and a new cycle of reattachment unsteadiness. The temporal scale and maximum vorticity are estimated with the self-sustained mechanism via order-of-magnitude analysis of the enstrophy. The advection speed of friction, derived from the assumption of coherent structures advecting with a Blasius-type boundary layer, aligns with the numerical findings.

Abstract:This primary objective of this paper is to study the unsteady characteristics in the reflected shock wave/boundary layer interaction in an end-wall shock tube by a numerical simulation. It is discovered that the shock bifurcation mainly consists of a leading bifurcated shock, a recirculation region and a tail shock. Especially the shape of the entire recirculation zone seems like a crooked earthworm and the vortices in the rear of recirculation region continuously drop off from the walls when the shock bifurcation moves forwards. By analyzing the flow turbulent properties in the bifurcation, the turbulent intensity in the stream-wise direction is dominant in both value and direction, and the distribution of Reynolds shear stress becomes obviously asymmetric, which indicates an underlying instability of the shock bifurcation.

Abstract:In a low-noise supersonic wind tunnel at a Mach number 3.4, visualization of flow structure around backward facing step (BFS) with a 3 mm high step is carried out via schlieren and nano-tracer-based planar laser scattering (NPLS) respectively. The time-averaged flow characteristic of the reattachment region and the rich instantaneous structures of the redeveloping boundary layer are both revealed. By contrasting the NPLS images at different times, the unsteady evolvement characteristic of the coherent vortices in the redeveloping boundary layer is discussed. And the results are compared with the schlieren of Mach 4.2 and the prior data published. Results indicate that with either of the two flow visualization ways, the shock waves and the expansion waves can be captured; however, the NPLS technique has the obvious advantages to reveal the instantaneous structures on a small scale in a certain section plane with a time resolution of 6 ns and spatial resolution about micron magnitude;under the flow condition in this contribution, the growth rate of redeveloping boundary layer is 0.07519; the characteristic time is around 10 μs of the hairpin vortex shedding. At the same expansion rate, the reattachment occurs later with increasing Mach numbers, while if the expansion rate increases, the reattachment occurs earlier, and the flow turn angle is larger.

Abstract:Three-dimensional effects of sidewalls on the low-frequency unsteadiness of the shock-wave/boundary-layer interaction (SBLI) are of academic and practical importance but not yet well understood. Considerable attention has been paid to the viscous effect of sidewalls, whereas the potential inviscid confinement effect of sidewalls has received little attention. The present work provides experimental evidence of multiscale spanwise travelling waves crossing the separation front under the confinement of sidewalls. Global pressure measurements were made for a sidewall-confined 24 compression ramp interaction in Mach-2.83 flow using fast-responding pressure-sensitive paint. The unsteady pressure in a statistically two-dimensional intermittent region suggests that in addition to the canonical streamwise oscillation, the separation front exhibits significant low-frequency, multiscale spanwise distortion. Modal analysis further reveals that multiscale spanwise unsteadiness has higher intensity and frequency than the streamwise oscillation. Such strong spanwise unsteadiness calls attention to the low-frequency unsteadiness in previous sidewall-confined SBLI experiments and encourages further study on the mechanism of the confinement effect.

Abstract:Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate the characteristic flow structures behind a backward-facing step. With better understanding of unsteady features, effective control practice with harmonic actuation is illustrated. Design/methodology/approach – The present study employs Improved Delayed Detached Eddy Simulation to resolve flow turbulence with a finite-volume approach on structured grid mesh. The coherent structure is displayed through temporal- and spatial-evolution of pressure fluctuations. Characteristic frequencies in different flow regions are extracted using fast Fourier transform. Dynamic mode decomposition method is applied to uncover the critical dynamic modes. Findings – The time- and spanwise-averaged quantities agree well with experimental data. It is observed that two distinct modes exist: shear layer mode and shedding mode. The former is related to Kelvin-Helmholtz instability mechanism, vortex pairing and step mode with non-dimensional frequency, Sth,st at around 0.2. The latter is of multi-scale, with a typical coherent structure shedding frequency, Sth,st at 0.074. Step mode interacts with shedding mode in the reattachment region, resulting in the low-frequency characteristics. Originality/value – An optimal excitation frequency to reduce recirculation bubble length is obtained at about Sth,st =0.2 with an explanation.

Abstract:Purpose When a reflected shock interacts with the boundary layer in a shock tube, the shock bifurcation occurs near the walls. Although the study of the shock bifurcation has been carried out by many researchers for several decades, little attention has been devoted to investigate the instability pattern of the bifurcation. This research work aims to successfully capture the asymmetry of the whole flow field, and attempt to achieve the instability mechanism of the shock bifurcation by a direct numerical simulation of the reflected shock wave/boundary layer interaction at Ma = 1.9. In addition, the reason for the formation of the bifurcated structure is also explored.Design/methodology/approach The spatial and temporal evolution of the shock bifurcation is obtained by solving the two-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations using a seventh-order accurate weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) scheme and a three-step Runge-Kutta time advancing approach.Findings The results show that the formation of shock bifurcation is mainly because of the shock/gradient field interaction, and the height of the bifurcated foot increases with the growth of the shock intensity and the gradient field. The unsteady asymmetry of the upper and bottom shock bifurcated structures is because of the vortex shedding with high frequency in the rear recirculation zone, which leads to the fluctuation of the recirculation area. The vortex shedding process behind the bifurcated structure closely resembles the Karman vortex street formed by the flow around the cylinder. The dimensionless vortex shedding frequency varies between 0.01 and 0.02. In comparison to the scenario at Ma = 1.9, the occurring time of instability is delayed and the upper and bottom bifurcated feet intersect in a relatively short time at Ma = 3.5. The region behind the bifurcated shock is a transitional flow field containing obvious cell structures and isolated islands.Originality/value This paper discovers an unsteady flow pattern of the shock bifurcation, and the mechanism of this instability in the reflected shock/boundary layer interaction is revealed in detail.
UNSTEADY CHARACTERISTICS OF THE SHOCK PROPAGATION IN A CONVERGENT SHOCK TUBE WITH SMALL ANGLE

Abstract:The whole evolution of the incident shock propagation in a convergent shock tube with small angle is studied in detail by using the direct numerical simulation. Specifically, the shape of the curved shock and the unsteady flow patterns which differs from the K-H instability, have been evaluated. The results show that as a disturbance of the inclined wall on the shock, the bending position of the incident shock represents periodically changed and its non-dimensional wavelength is larger when the convergent angle becomes greater, indicating a faster response to the curvature variation. At the same time, two different flow instable patterns for the shock propagation in the area reduction channel are discovered, one of which is the asymmetric shock bifurcations when the reflected shock from the collision of the right wall interacts with the boundary layer. This instability is closely related to the unsteady vortex shedding behind the bifurcated feet, resulting in the dramatic pressure fluctuation. Another pattern occurs when the reflected shocks generated by the curved incident shock impinge on the upper and lower walls. The collision position moves at a modest speed, which causes the formation of small vortices near the reflection regions. On the origin and propagation of perturbations that cause shock train inherent unsteadiness

Abstract:In constant area back pressured ducts, shock trains exhibit inherent unsteadiness where the shock system fluctuates about its time-averaged position despite constant bulk inflow and outflow conditions. In this work, the underlying causes of inherent unsteadiness are identified and the flow dynamics of the system is studied for a shock train in a Mach 2.0 ducted flow that is mechanically back pressured. High-speed schlieren movies and pressure measurements are collected to quantify the shock system fluctuations. Cross-spectral analysis of this data is used to identify specific perturbations, i.e. the fluid phenomena that impact the shock train motion. Key information about each perturbation is also obtained, including where it originates, what direction it travels and how it impacts each shock. Oil flow visualization and particle image velocimetry are then used to gain insight into the physical structure of perturbations and the flow phenomena that generate them. The results identify a complex, frequency-dependent dynamical system that is influenced by (i) upstream propagating acoustic waves that emanate from separation bubbles, (ii) vortices that shed from separation bubbles and convect downstream and (iii) upstream propagating acoustic waves generated in the diffuser. With this information, a scaling argument for the shock train inherent unsteadiness is presented.

Abstract:The origin of shock unsteadiness in a Mach 2.9 turbulent reattaching shear layer was investigated experimentally using temporally resolved flow visualization and measurements of wall pressure fluctuations. In this flow, the separation point of a turbulent boundary layer is essentially fixed at a backward-facing step, and the reattachment point is free to move along a ramp. In order to examine the influence of disturbances originating in the incoming shear layer, artificial disturbances were introduced into the flow through steady air injection in the vicinity of separation. The effect on the reattachment shock system was dramatic: the intensity of the pressure fluctuations and the amplitude of the shock motion increased substantially, and power spectra of the pressure fluctuations showed a distinct shift to lower frequency. The spectra collapsed onto a common curve in non-dimensional coordinates based on a length scale derived from two-point cross-correlations of the flow visualization data and a convection velocity derived from cross-correlations of the pressure measurements. The data were compared to a theory developed by Plotkin (1975), which is based on perturbation of a shock by random fluctuations in the incoming turbulent flow. Plotkin's model mimics the manner in which relatively broad-band perturbations in the incoming turbulent flow lead to relatively low-frequency motion of the separation bubble and its associated shock system. It is an excellent fit to separation shock motion, such as that generated in a blunt fin flow (briefly illustrated here). In the present shear layer flow, this low-frequency motion was detectable in the spectra near reattachment, but contained considerably less energy relative to the shock motions caused by direct perturbations by the incoming turbulent structures. These results indicate that the shock motion in the reattaching shear layer is primarily caused by organized structures in the incoming turbulent flow.

Abstract:Stability in a Mach 4.5 boundary layer over backward-facing steps (BFSs) is investigated using numerical methods. Two types of cases are considered with different laminar inflow conditions, imposed with single-frequency or broadband-frequency modes, respectively. Compared with the typical K-type transition over a flat plate, the boundary layer transition initiated by 90 kHz-frequency second mode appears to follow the same pattern but with a noticeable delay over the step. A larger step height leads to a better inhibition of the downstream Λ-vortices and thus a later transition, providing the step height is smaller than the local boundary layer thickness. Moreover, both the frequency weighted power spectral density and the root mean square of the streamwise velocity indicate the presence of Kelvin–Helmholtz (K–H) instability when the step height is equivalent to the thickness of the nearby boundary layer. There may exist an optimal step height for suppressing single-frequency (90 kHz) mode without exciting significant K–H modes. Similar to the previous studies on roughness, BFS can act as an amplifier for the low-frequency second modes and a suppressor for the high-frequency second modes. The critical frequency is equal to that of the unstable mode whose synchronization point is exactly located at the step corner. Additionally, the correction effects of the step induce the change of the phase speed of the fast mode, which correspondingly results in the movement of the synchronization point. Generally, the BFS is not able to completely alleviate the transition initiated by the broadband-frequency second modes but can still delay the boundary layer transition in a certain degree by suppressing the high-frequency unstable waves.

Abstract:This work is a numerical study of a transitional shock wave boundary layer interaction (SWBLI). The main goal is to improve our understanding of the well known low-frequency SWBLI unsteadiness and especially the suspected role of triadic interactions in the underlying physical mechanism. To this end, a Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) is performed using high-order finite volume scheme equipped with a suitable shock capture procedure. The resulting database is then extensively post-processed in order to extract the main dynamical features of the interaction zone (involved characteristic frequencies, characteristics of the vortical structures, etc.). The dynamical organisation and space-time evolution of the flow at dominant frequencies are then further characterised by mean of a Spectral Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (SPOD) analysis. In order to study the role of triadic interactions occurring in the interaction region, a BiSpectral Mode Decomposition (BSMD) analysis is applied to the data base. It allows us to extract the significant triadic interactions, their location and the resulting physical spatial modes. Strong triadic interactions are detected in the downstream part of the separation bubble whose role on the low-frequency unsteadiness is characterised. All the results of the various analyses are then discussed and integrated to formulate a possible mechanism fuelling low-frequency SWBLI unsteadiness.

Abstract:An experimental study on a supersonic laminar flow over a backward-facing step of 5 mm height was undertaken in a low-noise indraft wind tunnel. To investigate the fine structures of Ma = 3.0 and 3.8 laminar flow over a backward-facing step, nanotracer planar laser scattering was adopted for flow visualization. Flow structures, including supersonic laminar boundary layer, separation, reattachment, redeveloping turbulent boundary layer, expansion wave fan and reattachment shock, were revealed in the transient flow fields. In the Ma = 3.0 BFS (backward-facing step) flow, by measuring four typical regions, it could be found that the emergence of weak shock waves was related to the K–H (Kelvin–Helmholtz) vortex which appeared in the free shear layer and that the convergence of these waves into a reattachment shock was distinct. Based on large numbers of measurements, the structure of time-averaging flow field could be gained. Reattachment occurred at the location downstream from the step, about 7–7.5 h distance. After reattachment, the recovery boundary layer developed into turbulence quickly and its thickness increased at an angle of 4.6°. At the location of X = 14h, the redeveloping boundary layer was about ten times thicker than its original thickness, but it still had not changed into fully developed turbulence. However, in the Ma = 3.8 flow, the emergence of weak shock waves could be seen seldom, due to the decrease of expansion. The reattachment point was thought to be near X = 15h according to the averaging result. The reattachment shock was not legible, which meant the expansion and compression effects were not intensive.

Abstract:Flow topology and unsteady cavitation dynamics in the wake of a backward facing step was investigated using high speed videography and time-resolved X-Ray densitometry, along with static and dynamic pressure measurements. The measurements are used to inform the understanding of underlying mechanisms of observed flow dynamics as they are related to shock wave induced instabilities. The differences in cavity topology and behaviour at different cavitation numbers are examined to highlight flow features such as the pair of cavitating spanwise vortices in the shear layer and propagating bubbly shock front. The shock speeds at different cavitation conditions are estimated based on void-fraction measurements using the X-T diagram and compared to those computed using the one-dimensional Rankine Hugoniot jump condition. The two speeds(computed and measured) are found to be comparable. The effect of compressibility of the bubbly mixture is determined by estimating the local speed of sound using homogeneous 'frozen model' and homogeneous 'equilibrium model'. The current estimation of sound speed suggests that expression used to determine the local speed of sound is closer to the classic 'frozen model' than the 'equilibrium model' of speed of sound.

Abstract:Shock wave/boundary layer interaction (SWBLI) is still one of the unresolved bottlenecks that restrict the development of more advanced flight vehicles. Supersonic forward-facing step (FFS), an extreme case of compression ramp, often occurs severe SWBLIs with a large separation bubble. In this paper, experimental investigations on vortical structures and density fluctuations characteristics of supersonic FFS controlled by self-sustaining dual synthetic jets (SDSJ) are carried out in a Mach number 2.95 wind tunnel. High spatial–temporal resolution flowfield images of FFS without/with active flow control are captured by adopting nano-particle-based planar laser scattering technique. The control effects of the distance between the actuator and the step are mainly compared. The paper finds that the SDSJ can effectively change the feature of flowfield, eliminate the separation shock and the reattachment shock, compel the original shock induced by the step leading edge to distort and reduce its intensity finally. Density fluctuations analysis demonstrates that the whole flows seem to move upstream with the increase of distance (dS-J). Discrete Fourier transformation spectrums results reveal that the fluctuations are mainly located in the low-frequency region at first. High-frequency components and frequency bandwidth increase slightly after the SDSJ are applied.
